With all the recent news RE: Rooster Teeth, I'm gonna share some Standard Operating Procedure documents I made while I was Senior Storyboard Artist on Camp Camp.
Camp Camp was probably my favorite project I got to work on while I was at Rooster Teeth, the amount of freedom for world building the Sleepy Peak region AND the opportunity to add in as many background jokes as I could, it ended up being a super fulfilling creative collaboration.
It's because of the folks I worked with and the challenges we faced together that I can now do my current gig, SO I'll pour one out to the 2D team! Y'all deserved so many more opportunities to tell stories š»š

Something important that a lot of people don't seem to know is that backgrounds and illustration are the same. I don't think they should be considered separate parts of a drawing because it makes it harder to research and learn.
In my experience, whenever I try to research how to do backgrounds, most of the resources I find aren't very helpful. It's mostly stuff like how to paint rocks, trees, water, etc. which can help! But they only talk about rendering those things. You need to know about shape language, contrast, perspective, light/shadows, brushwork, and composition which illustration tutorials/courses give you. Every rock, tree, clump of weeds/grass, etc. need to fit together with everything else in the landscape.
So! From the top of my head, the online sources I learned from that helped me the most is Tyler Edlin on youtube. Specifically these videos:
Random tips:
color relativity is real and you should use more grey
think of painting like you're sculpting instead
Imply detail: your brushwork should be creating most of the details/texture, so you don't actually need to zoom in really far and render in tiny texture details with a 6px brush (detail is the least important part of the painting imo)
I drew my persona as a Pretty doll, very proud of this piece. I like to imagine that Lou wouldn't like how wild my hair is, and forced me to tied it back as he finds it a bit distracting. This will also be used as my new profile picture.
Yep! Lou wants to take in the best of the best dolls. If you aināt it, you are forced to work. This is the Institute of Perfection after all. A bit more stricter than how it was in the movie.

I have it to where Perfection is actual in the toy factory, protected by this glass dome. A very glamorous city where Pretties can eat, train, and shop for accessories. There's also some advertisements of "Perfection" and "You can be better" to encourage the Pretties to be better than ever. Underneath Perfection is a workshop where Imperfect dolls are forced to work on crafting accessories. I'll make a drawing of what it looks like once I'm done with my re-design of Lou, the Pretties, and the Imperfect dolls.

Lou: The Doll Killer AU
Ok so. During my time of getting started on my Uglydoll rewrite and strolling around the internet, I stumble upon this wiki page:
This wiki page is a made-up 2008 version of Uglydolls with the same premise, but changed the characters around a bit. The reason I bring this up, because it does something interest with Lou.
Instead of him being a prototype, he was a regular pretty doll that had a kid, but that kid replace him with an Uglydoll. This causes him to get jealous and have a burning hatred towards the Uglydolls. He then changed the factory's system, and founded the Institution of Perfection. Any Uglydoll that found its way into his institution, Lou would separate them by shredding them, which causes him to have this post-traumatic stress disorder due to how brutal it was.
Lou would be the doll killer of this version of Uglydolls, and at the end he would try to kill both the Uglies and Pretties with a Chain Kinger, only to be shredded by his own machine. A very dark, but interesting way of handling Lou's character as a whole. Him being pure evil, thirsty to get revenge on the Uglydolls, all because they made him lose his kid, and can to go to the big world.
I been thinking about after I'm done with my rewrite. I might do an AU of this version, since I could turn it into a murder mystery story or something. Idk. Just something I wanted to share since I didnāt see anyone talk about this wiki page.

Overanalyzing Studies
"Thank you. Have a nice day."
Wage just finished serving her latest customer's cupcakes, and heads back to kitchen to get some cleaning supplies. She sighs as it's been a long day of serving each Uglydolls their favorite treats, and making sure her bakery stays clean. It's hard work, but it's worth seeing each ugly smile after eating her delicious treats. She goes to the front of her bakery and clean each table, chairs, and utensils. Just as she's about to head back into the kitchen, the door opens.
Wage was about to greet the guest until she saw the guest was no other than Mayor Ox. This surprises Wage as Ox would usually have some ugly deliver his treats to him since he's so busy nowadays.
"Hello Wage. How are you doing today." Ox greeted her with a tired smile.
"Ox! I'm good, but you look really tired. Is everything ok?" Wage grabs a nearby chair for the exhausted mayor. "Would you like anything to eat or drink? It's on the house."
"No, I'm good. I just want to ask you a favor." Wage sits next to Ox, curious on what the mayor has to say. The mayor sighs; "It's Moxy."
Wage rolls her eyes and glance at Ox with annoyed expression. "What's she trying to do this time? I swear if she's trying to get every ugly to believe that this 'Outside World' exists, Imma-"
"She's not doing that!" Ox interrupted as he sits up. "No. It's....she hasn't come out of her home in a while now, and I'm worried sick about her. I tried to get her to come out, but y'know....she doesn't really listen to me."
Wage becomes concerned. She hasn't seen Moxy all day, now that she really thinks about. Moxy would usually come to her bakery, rant about whatever junk she finds that could lend to the "Outside World", and continue her day by delivering newspapers throughout Uglyville. This wasn't like Moxy at all.
Ox continues; "So, I was wondering if you could tried to see Moxy later, and see if she's doing well. It isn't healthy staying inside all day."
Wage nodded; "Yeah, I'll see her later."
"Thank you, Wage. I knew I could count on you." Ox gets up, and gives Wage a nice hug.
"No problem, Ox. I'm pretty sure Moxy's fine."

Wage closes her bakery for the night, and walks over to Moxy's house. She decided to make Moxy's favorite treat, Midnight Raspberry Cupcakes, before leaving. She finally makes it to the pink doll's house, basket at hand, and knocks on the door.
"Moxy! It's me, Wage!!" Wage shouted as she continues to knock on the door. "I haven't seen you all day, and just wanted to make sure you're still alive and well. I also made your favorite treat."
The front door opens quickly, and Wage gets dragged in by surprise. She is greeted by the pink doll who looked like she hasn't sleep for days.
"WAGE!!! My girl, My buddy, My Sister!!!" Moxy shouted out excitedly. "Welcome, welcome. I'm sooooooooo glad you came here. I been studying for a while now, and I FINALLY have proof that the 'Outside World' exists!!!"
Moxy grabs Wage's hand, and brings her over to wall filled with old doll magazines. Wage sees that Moxy's home is messy with trash, and papers scattered everywhere. Her friend is all over her head, and she needs to put an end to it.
"Moxy, have you really been home, analyzing all these papers and junks about this 'Outside World' you ramble on and on recently?" Wage ask as she tries to avoid each mess in her way.
"Yes!! I been trying to get everyone to know that there's something out there. Something more beyond Uglyville. I just have to prove that it exists, so everyone would stop doubting me," Moxy said as she grabs her favorite pen to make some notes on one of the paper on the wall.
Wage is concerned with how much work Moxy is putting in to her so-called studies. Willing to make such a big mess, and miss out days on hanging out with her best buds. Ox was right to be worried.
"Ok, so.....you see all these magazines right now." Moxy exclaims.
"Uhhh...yeah?" Wage said, unsure and confuse.
"Well, they all talk about little kids, and how these dolls are perfect toys for them. What are little kids you may ask? Kids are beings that enjoys playing with toys, and getting messy. Why do they like playing with toys and getting messy you may ask?"
"Hey....Moxy. I-"
"BECAUSE, it makes them happy, and kids love being happy!!!" Moxy was losing her mind.
"But, Moxy-", Wage tries to speak up only to get cut off by Moxy's rambling.
"So I did so more digging around to see if I could find proof that kids exist, because THESE magazines alone aren't enough to prove Ox wrong."
"Moxy!"
"And LOOK!! I found this weird, pretty blue cloth that has a lot of patterns on it, and it look like it belong to a kid's dress."
"Moxy!!"
"But, the thing is, I don't know if it's enough to get Ox to see that there's more out there than he thinks. He ALWAYS dismisses my theories about the 'Outside World' and thinks that I'm just imagining all these stuff when I'm not. Everyone thinks I'm crazy, but I'm NOT crazy!! THEY'RE the ones that are crazy! Hahahahahahah......So, if I can find a way to-"
"MOXY!!!" Wage yelled to get the pink doll's attention. She has had enough of Moxy's crazy conspiracy theories.
"Kids, Outside World, and toys??!! Listen to yourself. You are going insane with all this nonsense." Wage grabs Moxy's hand to sit her down on her bed, removing any mess that was on there.
"Wage....", Moxy tries to speak, but Wage shushes her harshly.
"Do you not understand that you been home for some time now, collecting these stupid paper about whatever nonsense, with little to no sleep?! Ox's been worried sick about you!!"
Moxy blinks repeatedly. She sees that her studies made her home into a huge mess, and couldn't remember the last time she gotten a good sleep. She became so obsess with proven Ox wrong that she started to go insane. Moxy feels guilty, and lowers her head.
Wage sighs, and walks over to her basket to give Moxy her favorite treat. Moxy happily accepts it, and eats the treat. It's been a while since she last had any of Wage's delicious treats.
"I'm sorry, Wage," Moxy apologizes. "I just...wanted Ox to believe me. I know there's a world out there. I just have to prove it to him. I guess it wouldn't hurt to take a break."
"A long break", Wage replied sternly. "And...I understand that this whole 'Outside World' thing is important to you, but it's not worth going insane over. You have friends who care about you, and a job to do. Those newspapers aren't going to deliver themselves after all."
Both Wage and Moxy lightly chuckled, and give each other a hug. Wage is happy that she was able to reason with her dear friend. She understands why Ox chose her to talk with Moxy, since she tends to be more stern than the others. Wage pats Moxy's head, grabs her basket, and makes her way to the door.
"Good night, Moxy. I hope to see you tomorrow, and make sure you clean up your house. I'm sick of looking at it."
"Good night, Wage. Thanks for the treat, and helping me see that I was overanalyzing my studies. I'll also be sure to clean up my house as well."
"Good, and you're welcome," Wage replies as she left with a sigh of relief.
Moxy straightens up her bed, and decides to sleep for the night. She plans to clean up her house, and catch up with her friends tomorrow morning. Even though Wage was right about her, she still couldn't stop thinking about what's really out there, and why Ox refuses to believe her. She feels like he was hiding something from her, and had to get to the bottom of it, but that's for another time. Right now, a decently long break from her studies wouldn't hurt.
Author's Note: It's been awhile since I last posted anything. My computer was having problems, but I got it fix now. I had this scene replay in my head, and had to illustrated it before it disappeared out of my mind. It was fun to do, and a good way to practice writing dialogue. I still have a long way to go, but this was a good start. Hope you enjoy my little short story.

Aww, Iām so glad you like it. I saw some of your comic and it looks amazing. I love what you did with Uglyville too. I also wished we spend a bit more time in Uglyville before Moxy and her friends rush off to Perfection, because like you said, we donāt really know how their society functions and could have been fun to see more of their town.
I get what they were going for Perfection with everything looking the same, but doesnāt help the fact that itās a boring place to look at compare to Uglyville, and the old concept art for it looks way more interesting and pretty than the final product. Iām currently working on my version of Perfection, and Iām excited to post it when I'm done.
I saw the multiple concept arts for Uglyville and really liked the aesthetic each one had, so I wanted to combine the ones I liked into this piece. I'm planning to do the same for Perfection as I want to do a rewrite of Uglydolls and expand upon the world they live in.
This piece has Moxy arriving at Uglyville for the first time and being amazed at all the unique, weird buildings and structures. I have to where Uglyville takes place in the factory's old garbage pit and all the buildings are made from broken toys and trash. I'll probably make some more changes to it since this is just an idea I had, but I like what I did so far.
You know what, if we donāt ever get any more content of Camp Camp I wonāt be shocked because we already know the outcome of RTās decision to make Camp Camp S5 an RT-exclusive; people are gonna pirate the show to HELL LMAO.
We waited for 5 years (excluding the special from July 2023) to get an official season and the fact that they decide to announce that it wonāt be free ever on the VERY day the new season is supposed to drop is a very poor choice.
My redesigns for the Uglydoll casts. Haven't changed too much besides giving them little accessories, stitches and tears. I'm also adding more to their character.
For example, Moxy is more into exploring outside of Uglyville and her curiosity gets the best of her. She knows there's more out there as she tends to collect stuff that's relate to the outside world, and likes to record everything she sees into her notepad. While she does love her town, Moxy often feels trap inside this safe haven and wants to see what the outside world has to offer.
Don't let Uglydog's chill personality fool you as he's willing to defend his friends and family from any harm. He's the protective guard of the group and is willing to put himself in danger in order to protect his love ones (It's the reason why his tail is torn). He also enjoys making music and partying everyday.
LuckyBat is the shy, but wise one of the group similar to how he was in the movie. Often giving out the best advices and being the emotional support. Though, he wants to learn how to be brave and courageous like Moxy as he often feels like a burden to his friends due to how slow, and weak he is. Wearing his yellow cape makes him feel like a superhero and he never leaves without it.
If you need a certain item or good shelter, Babo's your man. He did helped Ox with building Uglyville in the early days and always lending a helping hand to anyone in need. He makes sure he has the right item for certain situations, and keeps his friends out of sticky situations.
While Wage can be very cynical and harsh to her friends, she doesn't mean any harm. She's a kindhearted chef who loves baking sweets for everyone in Uglyville and putting a smile on their face. Wage just wants the best for her friends and gives them a reality check when needed. She's especially like that to Moxy as she thinks Moxy is too obsess with this so-called outside world and tries to reason with her. Wage also isn't afraid to called out anyone out on their crap and won't hesitate when it comes to standing up for her friends.
Ox is the founder of Uglyville and mentor to all the uglydolls. He makes sure everyone feels welcome and safe, and give them happiness their deserve. As happy as he can be, he knows what's really going on and tries to keep it secret in order to keep everyone safe. Thoughts about his secret being reveal makes him paranoid, and can't imagine what would happened to his precious home. He dismisses Moxy's theories about the outside world and tells that Uglyville is all she needs. After all, nothing can get better than this, right??? The white jacket he wears is a reminder of the memories he cherishes with a certain pretty doll.
I was listening to mlp "Unleash the magic..but better" and I was suddenly reminded of "Victoria". (Context is with doll pulturgory.)
So here's the idea-
Victoria is the one singing the lady's part. ("I've realized that you've always been an outcast.") The echoing of "Free the magic"/ oh wa waHAHA(bye) are sang by some also deleted characters of the pretty dolls. Here's some concept art.
So like, imagine them singing in the background while Victoria sings to Lou. Lou will be singing Twilight's part.
The scenery would be Lou right in the middle of the council, and it surrounds him. And right above the head's of the council are screens that show parts of uglyville, and the uyglies are very oblivious to the cameras around them. (Maybe some robots must have put it there, idk. And I don't know what time setting this is.)
Here's a helpful idea
The song starts with Victoria singing to Lou of how he should exterminate the uglydolls. Somehow, I don't know how, but there are like, bombs (idk) underground. They are all connected, and waiting to be triggered by a push of the button infront of Lou, and finmaly destroy the entire village.
Victoria and the council pressures Lou into pressing it, and what would happen if he wouldn't. The markets would decrease, the reputation/legacy of the factory would fall because of unappropriate dolls on the stocks, and its all because of him not making sure ONE reject would be recycled. Because of that, uglyville was made, BECAUSE OF LOU. So it's really all on him that the uglies were multiplying. The lyrics hit "It's up to you to not fail THIS TIME." It shows how they gave Lou one last chance to do his job right, and if he fails, the uglies would continue to ruin the hundred of years' reputation in toy making factories. Because of him. (Lyric: "If we lose, then you're to blame.") And that he would be punished severely.
(My English sounds so bad that I can't explain well I'm so sorry)
So when you start listening to the beginning of the song-
It starts with the typical gaslighting and Victoria trying to make Lou believe what he's doing is right.
The council sings the echos behind her and to Lou's face. Cue the music
The council would show Lou the possibilities if he pressed the button. Things would go back to normal, and Lou will have his role and purpose back.
In the song of Luna's part, it would be ox saying that some uglydoll race would begin, and it would switch from Lou's contemplations if he wants to do it or not. Maybe the council would tell Lou to make them feel the anguish and despair he has felt for decades.
Victoria would look so pretty
And maybe, again idk how but like some of my ocs would be there???? What
Along with Nolan who's being held down by a robot. Maybe they found out that Lou has been making friends with rejects again, and some perfect dolls that are not up to factory standards.
Nolan would be the one to say spike's part
("TWILIGHT NO!")
And then the last part of "Now!" Is like ox beginning the race and vitoria signalling Lou to press it.

My biggest concern about this chapter is how will Phos make out of it. Like, 10,000 years of suffering is going to be a hard turmoil for them, but will they spend most of their time having depressing thoughts and regrets? They did wish for happiness, so maybe new gems will emerge and treat Phos like their master or something. I donāt know anymore. I just hope something decent happens to Phos rather than seeing them suffer over and over again.

itāll be a hard, long, and insufferable period for phos, but iām really curious how much their personality and mindset will change during this time, especially with the possibility of leading newborn gems. i think theyāll mellow out of the rage during this time and enter a more melancholy and somberā¦ maybe apathetic attitude? being alone in their thoughts and potential feelings of regret, guilt, and loneliness will affect them severely in some way for sureā¦.well, letās join hands and just hope for that ichikawa will spare us (and phos) some mercy in hnkās ending

i will just. word vomit all my emotions and feelings firstā¦ like the way adamant finally shattered at the command of phosā¦ and hearing adamant say his final words to phos kinda snapped my heart in half ^_T at this point, phos has lost everything, including their comrades, their true self and identity, and now, their only master who had loved them unconditionally. IāMā¦ iām going insaneā¦. itās pretty nuts to know how much phos is burdening in every updateā¦ ichikawa is over here like,Ā ābut wait, thereās more..! ;-)ā (and not the way she lost her ps5 raffles rip senseiā¦ someone help her)
all sadness and despair aside, i found this chapter to be incredibly compelling not just with ichikawaās captivating visuals but with another interesting development with phos. aechmea has been an interestingĀ āantagonistā since the beginning, and i appreciate his role in driving phos forward, for better or for worse. their dynamic is insanely interesting!! itās very likely that aechmea appeared to manipulate phos into putting adamantās eye on. i thinkā¦ he might have been there to distract phos in order to take all of their broken companions, perhaps to provoke phos and force them to pray. iām only guessing, as theyāre now left entirely on their own (literally canāt go anywhere either; they have no means of lunar transportation? and i am like, so sure aechmea aināt coming back lol)ā and it just feels like the only thing they can do now isā¦. pray. that would ultimately be what aechmea wants, so maybe?? i also found it really peculiar that phos hallucinated the six impacts, and it makes me wonder if adamant had suffered through these visions during his time on earth ;; iām not sure why phos is seeing them now, but iām curious about its symbolism to the story and what this could mean for phos here on out.
i was relieved to see phosā anguish for their broken friends dissipate, but upset that they canāt make amends since aechmea took them all away LOLā¦. like ok great, cool ^_^!! i almost cried when phos desperately tried to search for adamant, shinsha, and the others so they could put them back together, but they were all missingā¦. also, to address the ask above, i wanted to give my perspective on the earth gems! everything ichikawa writes is never black and white, meaning there are many perspectives that deviate from a single story. phos has valid feelings of emotional turmoil, but it doesnāt mean their actions were moral. to the earth gems, phos appeared to be corrupt and became a potential danger to their society and adamant. all gems struggle with communicating their feelings and canāt comprehend what they need in order to tend to their emotional grievances. their natural āsolutionā is to bury issues; they went through centuries doing that in the time of war, and they would continue to do so because itās what they know. everyone has their own agenda ofĀ ārightā andĀ āwrongā, so being angry at the earth gems for their reaction towards phos felt a bit bias. anyway, i hope we get to see the earth gems come back before the series ends!! theyāre technically okā¦.though, i wonder what theyāll decide to do with themā¦if anyone has more 94 thoughts to share, iād love to know!! thank you for reading my thoughts and cries!
