Florence Castle's HEROES OF CYBERTRON - Ep. 04: DREADWING

PUNTATA 4: DREADWING, nemico freddo come il ghiaccio

C’era una volta un freddo, gelido spadaccino che viveva in un sontuoso castello di cristallo. Guerriero combattuto, soleva meditare per vendicarsi del defunto fratello gemello, o per dargli una degna sepoltura o strapparlo dall’Oltretomba nonostante fosse ormai mutato in uno zombi. Sembra l’incipit di una fiaba fantasy ma in realtà è solo una delle numerose incarnazioni di uno dei Decepticon più carismatici della generazione moderna dei Transformers, anche se dovremo analizzare il soggetto in questione sotto un’altra ottica.

DREADWING (letteralmente “Ala del Terrore”) nasce, infatti, come la combinazione degli altmode di due Powermaster G1 del lontano 1988, Darkwing e Dreadwind. Poi questo nome è stato riciclato per indicare altri Decepticon nelle iterazioni TF più moderne, Movie-verso e Continuity Allineata in primis, senza alcun collegamento diretto con l’antenato originale. Di quest’ultimo, sappiamo solo che è composto da due Decepticon mercenari, il cui scopo di esistere è seminare terrore ovunque li porti il vento, salvo ritrovarsi sul pianeta Nebulos dove stringono un legame binario rispettivamente con lo scienziato pazzo Hi-Test e il ladruncolo Throttle: grazie alla nuova tecnologia Powermaster, i due Nebulani divengono così i loro motori, fornendo loro energia grazie ad una modifica del legame binario.

Oltre la G1 c’è un bel buco, dove il Decepticon ha collezionato solo comparse sparse un po’ in tutto il brand, come lo “pseudo-Combiner” della serie Robots in Disguise (2001) o il clone di Mirage in Energon della Trilogia Unicron, ma Dreadwing è diventato subito popolare in altre iterazioni. Nel Movie-verso, infatti, egli altro non è che il capitano di una squadra di cloni Seeker nella miniserie a fumetti Il Regno di Starscream, ambientato tra il primo e il secondo film... e questa caratteristica di “capo dei Seeker” verrà ereditata dalla controparte Prime nella Continuity Allineata, oltreché a uno schema di colori relativamente simili, cioè sui toni del blu e del nero, con inediti tocchi di oro e argento. In questo caso, gli sceneggiatori ci regalano non uno ma due Seeker uguali come due gocce d’acqua, descritti letteralmente come fratelli gemelli e retroattivamente come delle figure tragiche ma al tempo stesso fedelissime alla causa di Megatron, forse i pochi sottoposti ciecamente fedeli al Comandante stesso. Eppure il trucco c’è: uno è verde e si chiama Skyquakee l’altro è blu... il nostro Dreadwing, appunto! Entrambi sono apparsi nella sesta puntata rispettivamente nella prima (Maestri e Allievi) e nella seconda stagione (Cannone Sciolto), anche se il Seeker blu ha avuto più “screen-time” di suo fratello, quindi ci concentreremo su di lui.

Il Dreadwing della serie Prime è speciale fin dal doppiatore americano, Tony Todd, lo stesso del Caduto nel secondo film di Michael Bay, ma noi lo conosciamo con la voce di Giorgio Bonino, noto ai più per aver doppiato – tra gli altri – Animated Blitzwing. In secondo luogo, la sua caratterizzazione è tale che all’apparenza fa di lui un personaggio poco nelle corde di un Decepticon... anzi, non possiamo neanche definirlo malvagio, ma solo uno sfortunato antieroe stoico e meditativo munito di un rigidissimo codice d’onore quasi come fosse il “pronipote” del compianto e indimenticabile Beast Wars Dinobot (di cui ci occuperemo in una puntata futura). Sempre da Biocombat deriva il suo design generale molto reminiscente a Depth Charge, col quale condivide addirittura la combinazione casco blu/viso dorato/occhi rossi. Infine, a rendere Dreadwing un personaggio amatissimo dal pubblico è lo stile da samurai nella forma della testa, il fatto di essere equipaggiato con una spada e, ovviamente, una storia di redenzione alle spalle, alla stessa stregua di una fiaba fantasy.

Essendo un personaggio relativamente poco conosciuto, i modelli di Dreadwing si contano sulle dita di una mano, e per comodità indicheremo tutti quelli che portano questo nome. Il capostipite è ovviamente il jet formato dai due G1 Powermaster Dreadwind e Darkwing del 1988, la cui gimmik di combinarsi in altmode era all’epoca una novità a dir poco geniale. Nel 1994 il personaggio viene riproposto nella G2, e anche se il modellino originale non era un granché, le rivisitazioni moderne per la linea Transformers 2010 (un remold del Voyager Mindwipe della linea Revenge of the Fallen, disponibile esclusivamente al Tokyo Toy Show di quell’anno) e il Deluxe della linea celebrativa Generations Thrilling 30 del 2014 sono delle rappresentazioni moderne del Dreadwing “classico” più che accettabili! Se però dobbiamo per forza ricercare un modello che omaggi il duo Powermaster originale senza snaturarlo, bisogna allora menzionare i Deluxe della linea Power of the Prime (2017/18), anche se purtroppo sono solo dei remold di due Aerialbot della precedente Combiner Force (Air Raid per Darkwing e Skydive per Dreadwind).

Per quanto riguarda i modellini degli anni Duemila, solo quello di classe Megadella linea Energon può essere considerata una buona rappresentazione del Decepticon, anche se purtroppo l’action figure in sé era solo un mero remold di Mirage. Uno stampo tutto nuovo, invece, era il Deluxe della linea del primo film di Michael Bay, in cui lo vediamo come un Decepticon monocolo con l’altmode di MiG-29 Fulcrum, molto somigliante ai droni Seeker apparsi nel videogioco ufficiale del film. A completare la collezione è la triade di Dreadwing rilasciati per la linea Prime, rispettivamente un modellino buono, ottimo e mediocre: un Cyberverse Commander bello compatto in seguito ricolorato per fare Skyquake; un possente Voyager munito di una ridicola arma a LED, anch’esso in seguito riscolpito con le fattezze del fratello gemello verde; e infine un Deluxe per la sotto-linea Beast Hunters con un assetto più vicino ad una bestia che un robot umanoide, il cui stampo sarà riutilizzato per il Dreadwing della serie Takara Adventure, ossia l’edizione giapponese di Robots in Disguise (2015). Dal momento che la stagione 3 di Prime non è stata importata nel paese del Sol Levante, questo modellino potrebbe essere considerato come un erede spirituale per il nostro glorioso Decepticon, il cui ricordo sarà sempre vivo nelle nostre Scintille.

CONCLUSIONE

Questa storia di redenzione, onore e misticità mi costringe a paragonare Dreadwing e Skyquake – almeno in linea teorica – alla leggenda greca dei Dioscuri Castore e Polluce. Là dove il primo muore fatalmente in una battuta di caccia e il secondo prega il padre Zeus di cedere metà della propria immortalità affinché i due possano vivere alternativamente sull’Olimpo e nell’Oltretomba senza mai separarsi, qui invece la caccia di Dreadwing tanto del corpo del fratello quanto del suo assassino avviene risoluta e senza mai perdere la calma… salvo infine inalberarsi e sfogare il proprio dolore in un grido nella notte temporalesca in cui viaggia la Nemesi di Megatron. È una storia bellissima e commovente al pari dell’antenato Dinobot, e gli antieroi tragici hanno sempre suscitato un certo fascino in me. Indubbiamente uno dei personaggi più sfaccettati di tutta la serie Prime!

My own Sonic the Hedgehog (character) headcanons! 💙

• One thing Sonic honestly fears is being alone; the smaller animals can’t really talk so he was left without friends for a while. He’s very grateful to have met Tails.

• As Sonic grows older, his quills get darker. When he was born they were more like a sky blue, but now they are close to an indigo shade.

• He puts a lot of soft gel and/or conditioner in this quills to both keep them steady while he’s running and so others won’t get hurt when they hug him.

• If Amy doesn’t go overboard with her crush on him, Sonic might gain neutral feelings for her too; if only she could take it slow at times (how ironic).

• The first time he ever ate a chilli dog was - as Sonic himself described it - ‘As if it had more positive energy than the Chaos Emeralds have’.

• Despite being close friends now, Sonic still likes to tease Knuckles every so often. The echidna is aware that it’s in a friendly way, so he tries to make mild comebacks.

• Running at high speeds is fun, but his favourite thing to do is skateboarding. That explains why he does it a lot on his adventures.

• Sonic wants to be a positive influence to everyone so he does not cry in public. However, when alone, he lets out a few healthy tears. Like when Shadow ‘died’ or how he’ll be long gone when Chip wakes up.

Unlike when he was a teen, Genji is slow with his love, being cautious to show who he is to people he didn’t fully know or trust yet. He was scared that his scars and body, or lack there of, would make the person he loved feel repulsed.

That fear still lingered in your 3rd month of dating when you had noticed him avoiding the subject of physical intimacy, or even showing you his face or body often. Whenever you’d bring it up he’d conveniently have a meeting or a mission to get ready for and avoid you for a few hours until he’d figured you’d dropped the subject.

Today you finally wanted to open the subject back up, deciding that it’d be best to ask when you both were home so you waited around for him. You lit candles in the living room and set up a bunch of blankets to ensure he’d be comfortable when he got home.

Later on he returned, tiered from the day. He instantly noticed the warm smell of the house as he took off his shoes before he joined you in the living room.

“What is all of this?” He asks, sitting on the plush couch cushion next to you, the material sinking beneath his weight. You figured it was now or never, if it was an answer you didn’t want to hear at least you’d know in stead of worrying that it was you.

“Genji- honey I know that you don’t like talking about stuff like this but I need you to listen” you start, taking his hands into yours, brushing your thumbs over his knuckles soothingly. He stiffens up, looking away from you.

“I understand if it’s just not something you want or- even like but I just want to know…” you sigh, collecting you thoughts before continuing.

“Why don’t you want to kiss me?” the words burn your throat as they come out, a slight embarrassment festering in your chest as he sat silent for a moment.

“It’s not you” he sighs, the realization of his attitude regarding the subject setting in. He does feel guilty that you’ve been waiting so long to know why but he still feels like he’s doing you a favor.

“Then what is it? I promise whatever it is I will be fine with it” you say, shifting to sit closer to him while facing him. The cold metal of his hands had slowly warmed under your touch, the coldness of his work slowly fading.

“I just… I don’t want to disgust you” he mutters, shrinking away from your warmth with a shudder. You stare at him for a moment, contemplating what he could possibly mean.

“Genji I could never be disgusted by you” you reassure, soft hands meeting the jaw of his mask, your fingers grazing the clips holding it in place. His hands quickly covered yours, a pained look in his eyes. He hated hiding from you but he could feel in his soul that you would be utterly repulsed by what you saw beneath the metal plating.

Regardless of his resistance you removed the covering, silently reassuring him with a warm smile. He closed his eyes as your hands met his tattered skin, warmth spreading over the surface.

He was shocked to say the least when he began to feel your lips pressing soft kisses on his scars, lipgloss transferring to his skin, leaving shiny residue.

“Oh Genji” you sighed, taking in his face in full as though it’d be the last time you’d see it.

“I don’t care what you look like, I’ll love you regardless” you whisper as he forces his eyes open to find a genuine smile on your face, is eyes brimming with tears that threatened to fall over his cheeks.

Without another word he leaned in and met your lips, hands shaking as he held you close. He could feel the heat of his cheeks worsening as his cheeks grew wet with tears, happy tears.

“I love you”

First of all, sorry for being dead. Just so you know, I didn’t decide stop writing or anything like that, lately my motivation was shit even tho I had some idea what I should write about. And last two week been pretty stressful for me. Changing the subject, I’m adding Overwatch to my masterlist. Don’t be surprised if now it’s gonna be more ow than marvel, cuz I’m playing this game a lot and I’ obsessed with Genji and I main him even tho I’m still learning how to play him. (Just like Brigitte says “Practice makes perfect”) I hope you’re going to enjoy after not getting anything from me! ^^’ 💖💖💖

✧ Does Genji ever get jealous? Of course. He’s completely aware that you won’t cheat on him, but the way some people look at you or flirt with you, just make him wanna send them a death glare and take you away from them 

✧ He’s an amazing kisser! Genji has a lot of experience when it comes to kissing, so you won’t be disappointed. If you never kissed anyone before, he has no problem with teaching you how to do it

✧ Even though Genji is very good at kissing, his kisses can feel a little rough, because has a few scars across his lips

✧ He has some scars across his face and his body and he just loves when kiss them, because it really makes him feel loved, accepted and safe, especially after everything that happened to him

✧ You’re one of not many people who are allowed to see him without his visor, because he feels safe enough to show his face to you

✧ Sometimes when Genji wants to intimate with you (not just sex) he would take off some of his armor so you can touch his skin. It’s great for cuddles! But don’t tell anyone, it’s a secret

✧ Going shopping with him is kinda fun, kinda not. He sometimes acts like a parent. Example - “We don’t need more sweets, koibito. We got them at home." 

✧ Breakfast in bed? Oh absolutely!

✧ Of course with Genji coming to your live, his dragon Soba comes with him. She’s just as cute as her owner, but she really like to cause trouble and destroy cups, so keep them away from her

✧ Genji is a very supportive lover! He’ll support no matter what, unless your decision are harmful or illegal 

✧ If you have any problems with anxiety, depression and stuff like that, he will go to therapist with you. (unless you don’t want him to, he’ll respect your decision) He’ll also try to help the way Zenyatta helped him, so for example he’ll ask you to meditate with him 

✧ Talking about meditation - Genji meditates at least once a day. He doesn’t mind you joining, but he preferres when it’s quiet when his meditating

✧ Did I mention that Genji is a gentleman? No matter what gender you are, he’ll be a total gentleman

✧ He’s very gentle with you. Genji is sometimes afraid that he might hurt you, because he’s a cyborg. It never happened, but he’s still afraid 

✧ If you ever want to dye your hair, Genji is ready to help with it! When he was younger, he dyed his hair a lot and it was mostly bright colors, so you can say he’s an expert. Just make sure to secure most of his armor, cuz dye is not going to leave quickly 

My own Silver the Hedgehog headcanons! 🤍

Just Silver

• As a child, it was very difficult for him to take control of his physic powers and often caused unintentional messes; this led to his family cutting him off.

• Even if he learned to enhance his abilities as he grew older, occasional outbursts were still common. Luckily a tech friend built the bracelets to keep them intact.

• In the future, there are legends about an unstoppable hero who would always save the world with his speed and endless optimism (his name was lost through time) . Silver grew up with these stories and was inspired to be like a hero too.

• The Silver which has been seen since ‘Rivals’ isn’t the same Silver from 06; he can be more calmer and doesn’t go straight to killing his foes. However, his urge for justice is still somewhat there.

• Oddly enough, Silver has met some of his friends’ descendants before. How does he know this? Either with similar looks or the families praising their ancestors as old-time heroes.

• His favourite subject to study is history, which explains his fascination for what the past was like and how he stays there for some time after helping to save it.

Silver and Blaze

• Silver doesn’t usually talk about his troubles that much, not even to his friends, but Blaze is different. She’s mature for her age like him and is a good listener.

• He’s gotten to know both Cream and Marine pretty well thanks to Blaze; from the rabbit inviting them both for tea to Blaze allowing the raccoon to visit Sonic’s dimension once.

• Whenever Silver feels afraid to return back to his time due to possible resets (this doesn’t happen often) Blaze allows him to rest in her dimension for a short while. Another chance to meet Marine as well.

• Together with his psychokinesis and her pyrokinesis, they can be the most unstoppable duo together - possibly pass the ultimate lifeform himself.

• Despite them meeting for the first time in Sweet Mountain, they have his deep feeling of something familiar about each other. They’re confused about this, but they feel safe around one another, and work greatly in battle. Hopefully someday they’ll find the answer.

Thought on being Genji's first love after his accident.

After coming to terms with his new body under Zenyatta's guide, he still never really put himself put there. Back before Genji always had someone to spend time with, he never was as alone as he was now. He always had a girlfriend or many people he spoke to, but now it's just him and a body he still didn't really like to look at. He more focused on training, meditation and any missions overwatch sent him on.

That was until the new overwatch recruit came along, they were friendly and treated him like a human. He enjoyed talking to them, either training alongside them or a quick wave when they passed by. He felt his heart quicken a little bit when they were near but he pushed those feelings down, nobody could love something like him right?

Soon enough him and that new recruit would spend time outside of overwatch, getting lunch together or him walking them home. With enough convincing, he would eventually show his face to them. Removing the helmet willingly for once, his face was so pretty you couldn't help but admire it. Genji felt embarrassed, scars were everywhere and he didn't like to think about them.

He reached for his mask again but you caught his hand, stopping him from covering his face again. He relented and let you touch his face, his cheeks were dusted a soft pink and he averted your gaze.

"I don't know why you cover your face, it's very handsome."

His blush deepened, he tried to reply but he couldn't think of any words. You realized what you said but before you could apologize he spoke.

"Thank you.. I. I never expected to hear that.."

He smiled softly, he took your hand in his.

"Especially not from someone as beautiful as you."

Genji never thought he would be called handsome again, but maybe this was the beginning of something new.
