What I think is so funny about the parallels between Luffy, Zoro and the men they wish to meet again and surpass.

Is that Luffy wants to fight Shanks like a son showing his father everything he’s learnt; look how far he’s come, who he’s become.

And Zoro wants to fight Mihawk like a feral cat fighting god in a back alley; Inevitable, preordained, there can only be one.

And both are equally as valid.

ok so when Zoro and Luffy first meet Zoro’s 2 most important things to him were his swords and his own life like thats it nothing else matters to him thats all he needs. then he joins the crew and becomes the first mate. 

flash forward to Thriller Bark and u’ll instantly remember why that shits so poignant 

Zoro’s sacrificial actions are now basically declaring Luffy to be his literal everything he THROWs away his swords (Most Important Things #1) and offers up his own life (Most Important Thing #2) in exchange for Luffy’s survival. Literally nothing now is as important to him as Luffy and Luffy’s dream is, and thats the kind of relationship that fucks me right UP cuz we started from the bottom now we’re here  

zoro’s lifelong isolation and his unspoken elation to finally have a home (expressed by his unwavering protection and devotion). paired with luffy’s lifelong abandonment issues and clamber of loneliness; how relieving it must be to have someone devoted to you, to think of you as a home he cannot lose. even their issues & insecurities wordlessly assure and complete each other, zolu soulmates in every way

*whacking gavel on desk* we need to talk more about luffy BLUSHING at the glint of green in the distance hundreds of feet away and realizing after so long (three weeks) he’s finally reunited with his swordsman. bc huh!?? he did not need to blush to convey how excited he was to see zoro, but it was a conscious decision to draw in the manga & anime that luffy BLUSHED at the sight of him.

(and then he flung himself into zoro’s arms clutching on to him saying it’s been forever while zoro smiled bright and wide bc suddenly they were just two dumb kids from the east blue with a dingy and a dream again)
