What sort of questions should I be asking my beta readers?
When I send out my chapter to be read over by my beta readers, I always include a set of questions typed out at the bottom, grouped into different categories such as: plot, pacing, character, setting, etc.Ā
You might want to tailor the questions depending on the genre or which chapter it is. For example, if itās the first chapter youāll want to ask them about how well your story managed to hook them, or if they managed to easily get an idea of the world youāve introduced them to. If itās the climax you might want to ask if the action scenes are fluid, and if the plot twist/s were predictable or surprising.Ā
Hereās some example questions that you could use:
What is your first impression of the main character? Do you find them likable? Annoying? Boring?
After reading it for the first time, what is your first impression? Was it cohesive and compelling? Boring and confusing?
Did the first sentence/paragraph/page efficiently grab your attention and hook you in?
If you were to read this chapter in a bookstore/library would you be convinced to buy it? Or would you need to read further before deciding? Why or why not?
Did you get oriented fairly quickly at the beginning as to whose story it is, whatās going on, and where and when itās taking place? If not, what were you confused about at the beginning?
Does the first chapter establish the main character efficiently? Do they feel believable?
Could you clearly imagine what the characters looked like? If not, who?
Who was your favourite character and why? Has your favourite character changed? (if this hasnāt changed feel free to skip this question)Ā
Are there any characters that you do not like? Why do you not like them? (Boring, annoying, problematic, etc.)Ā
Was there ever a moment when you found yourself annoyed or frustrated by a character?Ā
Could you relate to the main character? Did you empathise with their motivation or find yourself indifferent?Ā
Were the characters goals/motivations clear and understandable?Ā
Did you get confused about whoās who? Are there too many characters to keep track of? Are any of the names or characters too similar?
Do the characters feel three-dimensional or like cardboard cutouts?Ā
How familiar have you become with the main characters? Without cheating could you name the four main characters? Can you remember their appearance? Can you remember their goal or motivation?Ā
Did the dialogue seem natural to you?
Was there ever a moment where you didnāt know who was talking?
Were you able to visualize where and when the story is taking place?
Is the setting realistic and believable?Ā
How well do you remember the setting? Without cheating, can you name four important settings?
Did anything about the story seem cliche or tired to you? How so?Ā
Did anything you read (character, setting, etc.) remind you of any others works? (Books, movies, etc.)Ā
Do you feel there were any unnecessary scenes/moments that deserved to be deleted or cut back?
Do the scenes flow naturally and comprehensively at an appropriate pace? Did you ever feel like they were jumping around the place?Ā
Was there ever a moment where you attention started to lag, or the chapter begun to drag? Particular paragraph numbers would be very helpful.Ā
Did you ever come across a sentence that took you out of the moment, or you had to reread to understand fully?Ā
Was the writing style fluid and easy to read? Stilted? Purple prose-y? Awkward?
Did you notice any discrepancies or inconsistencies in facts, places, character details, plot, etc.?
What three things did you like? What three things did you not like?Ā
Can you try predicting any upcoming plot twists or outcomes?Ā
Was there ever a moment when your suspension of disbelief was tested?Ā
Is there anything youād personally change about the story?Ā
Was the twist expected or surprising? Do you feel that the foreshadowing was almost nonexistent, or heavy handed?Ā
Feel free to tailor these to your needs or ignore some of them if you donāt think theyāre useful. Basically, your questions are about finding out the information about how others perceive your own writing and how you can improve your story.

I thought Iād post some helpful links to sites I use for extra cash. These sites have saved my bacon more than a few times in the past couple of years. I can vouch that they do work and are not scams. Iāll post info with each site and how they work.
1.) Swagbucks This one is my go to website because it has the most to do. You can watch videos on your tablet, iphone, or desktop. Thereās surveys you can fill out and special offers that are free(though if you do those special offers Iād use a junk email, but keep in mind that you do need to register for Swagbucks with the email associated with your paypal so you can get paid). Since Iām a stay at home mom I am mostly doing this all day long while doing my art commissions or running this blog. I earn about $100-$200 a month from this site alone. They also have giftcards to other stores, and if you redeem some of the $25 giftcards they are 300 sb(equivalent to $3) once a month. So I suggest redeeming one wal mart giftcard a month to take advantage of that and save the 300 sb(sb are points btw). Use this to get yourself groceries or necessities. The rest of the month you can redeem paypal and you can get that cash transferred to your bank to help pay for bills.

3.) Inbox Dollars This one is very slow to pay out for me but thatās only because I JUST do the emails. It does offer special offers, surveys, and videos like swagbucks but I only concentrate my efforts on clicking the links in the emails they send me. By clicking the links in the emails you earn 2 cents. This adds up with time and its easy to do when you check your email like you normally do. It takes very little effort so itās worth adding to your daily routine. If you want to do more on this site then youāll earn faster. They mostly just send you a check, but they do offer a debit card and giftcards now.
Have you ever been listening to Rainymood and thought, āYeah, this is good ⦠but it would be nice if I could customize the sound more, or if there was a little more choice.
Let me introduce you to MyNoise.
MyNoise is a customizable sounscape looper with so many options, even within each soundscape. Ā So say, for instance, you really love rain sounds when you write or study or relax. Ā Anything. Ā I know Iām a big fan of rain sounds. Ā They have a page for that.
But say you like really high, pattery rain, and LOTS of low thunder. Ā Hereās where MyNoise really stands out: you can customize that. Ā See those sliders with all the cute colors? Ā That is your equalizer. You canĀ adjust the levels based on what you want to hear more and less of. Ā Hereās how it looks when you want high, pattery rain and low, rumbly thunder:
But say rain isnāt really your jam. Ā Say you want something a little more ambient, a little more background noise-y. Ā Something with people. Ā Well, they have customizable coffee house chatter that even has the levels listed for things like ākitchen,ā ābabble,ā and ātableā:
Or say you miss the ocean.
Or say you miss your cat.
Or say you miss your spaceship.
Or say you miss the dungeon where you and your team of scalawag adventurers used to explore and face off against, say, dragons. Ā In the dungeon.
This site is seriously so helpful, and those are just aĀ fractionĀ of every kind of sounscape the site has to offer. Ā The best part is that if you want to layer it with music (for instance, Iāll layer a playlist + rain + coffee shop if the scene Iām writing takes place in a coffee shop), you can adjust the master volume, meaningĀ all of your layers stay at theirĀ respectiveĀ volumes, just louder or quieter.
Enjoy!
Ok, I know some people are complaining about this season, and while there were some things I wouldāve changed, IT WAS SOOOOO GOOD!!
From the trailers I originally thought I was gonna hate Tadano, but I actually really liked him? Like, he was such a chill dude and even when Retsuko broke things off, he was respectful. He had a lot of layers to him, and wasnāt the cliche, one-dimensional dude bro I thought he was gonna be. However, I am glad that he and Retsuko broke up, not only because obvious ship, but particularly when it was obvious he and Retsuko were not on the same page about marraige and having a family. But even then, I still really liked him as a character! ā¢wā¢
Speaking of Haida, I was sort of disappointed with how little of a role he played this season. He wasnāt completely reduced to the side, but I wouldāve liked more scenes with him (and Retsuko skkfsk).
Ooohhh, but I ADORED what this season added to Kabaeās character! I went from finding her agonizingly annoying in season 1 to being one of my favorite characters in the whole series. They way she helped Anai and played with her kids as well as the story with her husband was so adorable! I loved how they took a sort of irrelevant character from the first season and added on to her. Amazing stuff!
The message of the whole season, however, is what I think was the best part, at least for me. Even though Retsuko and Tadano were great for each other personality wise, their morals just didnāt match up, and thatās ok. You shouldnāt force yourself to match up with your partnerās expectations. The point of a relationship is to be happy together, and if you canāt meet halfway, things might not work out, and thatās not a bad thing. I really think that moral should be incorporated into more shows.
I have plenty more opinions that I have on this season, but to just sum it all up, I really really enjoyed it, and I really really hope thereās a season 3!!
SAVE THE BEES PLEASE!! šš
hey please spread this around.
bumblebees are going extinct and i think now is a time to let everyone know that pesticides arenāt the way to go. there are infact alternatives to pesticides that are cheaper and safer.
like caffeine! bees love the smell of caffeine, and it doesnāt hurt them. however every other dangerous bug is repulsed by the smell and wont eat your plants.
itās that simple! itās that fucking simple! all you have to do is get some coffee beans or whatever. put it in a cup. put some water in it. put it in a spray bottle. boom! thatās all!
please spread this around to anyone you know i refuse to let bumblebees go extinct
