I'm Editing My First Book And Really Wanna Get It Published, But I Know Nothing About The Literary World.

I'm editing my first book and really wanna get it published, but I know nothing about the literary world. I'd like to find an agent who can best represent my interests, because my biggest fear with my work is it getting stolen or losing creative control. Any advice on how I can find an agent?

There’s a couple different ways to find an agent. You can Google for literary agents, go to conferences, or find them on social media. Many agents are extremely active on Twitter, so check out the tags #pitmad, Please note there are some rules around #pitmad so be sure to read up on those.

There are a few general rules:

Do your research. Read the blurbs on the website to see what genres they want, or follow them on social media to see what they’re looking for. Some may say they want specific types of stories. Make note of that. Ultimately, do not send your sci-fi thriller to an agent who wants romance or non-fiction.

Follow the damn rules. Read their submission/query letter requirements very carefully. There may be particular instructions they want you to follow and a quick way to have your material NOT read is to ignore them.

Apply to several. Keep a spreadsheet with names, emails, genres, and when you applied to them. That way you can stay organized and know who you applied to and when.

Do not send them money. Any agent that is asking you for cash up front isn’t a real agent. They will get paid when your story gets picked up for publication.

As for people stealing your work, in the US, you can get copyright. It costs about $75 and requires you to fill in some forms and send in some proof that you’ve actually done the work. The truth is, the likelihood of people stealing your idea and writing the exact same story is low on the literary side.

As for losing creative control, unless you sell the rights to your story (which you wouldn’t do unless you’re selling film rights, and then they can only change the movie not the book), you remain in control. They cannot force you to make changes. With that said, if you refuse to make certain changes, they are well within their rights to drop you as a client.

P.S. For those of you wondering, for TV and Film agents, you (generally) do not find them. They find you.

life saving surgery for my dad

this is posted July 2, 2019!

image

Hello, I just discovered that Gofundme does not work in the country I live in! More coherent post now that I’ve calmed down.

Hello! My name is Caleb and I am a trans guy of color who loves folklore, storytelling and drawing! I am raising money for my dad’s surgery + us getting back on our feet. He is 56 years old and his surgery is to remove kidney stones that are causing him significant pain +  is life threatening . My dad is a funny and incredible guy, He loves cats and singing and he had sacrificed everything for my mom, my sister and I.  Both him and my mom are diabetic and disabled, as when I was 9 years old, my mom had suffered a sudden sepsis attack, which had caused her to go brain dead for a few minutes, before being revived and fall in a coma for 3 months. When my mother woke up from her coma, she was paralyzed, even her vocal cords were paralyzed!! Ever since then it was just me and my dad who took care of our family, and then, when I graduated college, it was just me as dad got sick as well. I am only in my very early twenties and the sole caretaker of my family, my two disabled parents, my sister who is a minor, and our cats and dog.  My dad’s surgery was estimated to be 120 thousand pesos- 200 thousand pesos, which is 2,345.88 US dollars at least, and 3,909.80 US dollars at most.

I have a job, I just need a little bit of help.

1 US dollar = 50 Ph Pesos We live in the Philippines,  and my dad is taking an ultrasound tomorrow to see just what they can do about it. I will try to update as much as I can. Anything extra will go to my mom’s diapers, toiletries, etc, my dad’s maintenance medicine, and my sister’s lunch money for school. Thank you and sorry for my english;

(I used to have a youcaring for this, but as youcaring merged with gofundme, I believe that all the existing pages have been deleted. I have gathered about 30 thousand pesos on youcaring, and about 25 thousand pesos + today. I cannot thank you all enough) Thank you so so much for taking the time to read this, and I hope you are all well.

I will update as much as I can!

Here is my fundrazr page;;!! It’s a website that’s like gofundme but international!

Read this and save a life - YOUR OWN

From a surgical nurse and certified CPR teacher:

Please pause for 2 minutes and read this:

1. Let’s say it’s 7.25pm and you’re going home (alone of course) after an unusually hard day on the job.

2. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated.

3 Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up in to your jaw. You are only about five km from the hospital nearest your home.

4. Unfortunately you don’t know if you’ll be able to make it that far.

5. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy who taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

6. HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE? Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

7. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

8. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

9. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

10. A cardiologist says If everyone who gets this mail kindly sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we’ll save at least one life.

11. Rather than sending jokes, please... contribute by forwarding this mail which can save a person’s life.

12. If this message comes around you... more than once… please don’t get irritated... You should instead, be happy that you have many friends who care about you & keeps reminding you how to deal with a Heart attack.

please take the time and boost this post by reposting it and sending it to those you love because we all need to understand how to quickly deal with heart attacks

A Note on Paragraphs

Writing fan fiction online and writing essays for school really messed up how I view paragraphs.

For fan fiction, I didn’t write for mobile, I wrote for web browsers, which are really really wide (unless you read on mobile but I always read on my desktop). In order for paragraphs to look like decent sized paragraphs (and I wanted them to, to look more like a “real” writer’s work) the paragraphs had to have a ton of lines and lots of prose and description which I struggle with A LOT.

A Note On Paragraphs

(For example, these look like pretty short paragraphs but do you see how long they are?)

For school essays, I was often required to write thousands of words— in five paragraphs. This, as you may have already guessed, resulted in absolutely atrociously huge paragraphs that my brain still recognizes as the proper size paragraph.

WHICH IT MOST DEFINITELY IS NOT.

A Note On Paragraphs

These are four random books I chose (In order, left to right, top to bottom: Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter, Lunar Chronicles, Star Wars). The longest paragraph is in the Harry Potter one and it is 100% just the first paragraph that introduces the setting.

A Note On Paragraphs

I tried changing my google doc from it’s original, default, printer page size (8.5 x 11 inches) to one of the standard-ish sizes of paperbacks I found online (5.5 x 8.5 inches). It made a very noticeable difference.

A Note On Paragraphs

If anybody wants to try this, go to file → page setup to change any settings you want.

Filling up an entire printer page sometimes feels like pulling teeth and I think for those of us who struggle with this, something as simple as changing the way we see our writing and the way we write could really make a difference. Hell, even for editing. I’ve heard people say sometimes that changing the font makes a huge difference and makes it easier to spot mistakes so I’m sure this could work in much the same way.
