It’s only the beginning of 2019, and we already have one of the most iconic, and breathtaking pieces of animation of the year.
I think I love how the way Patrick sings is the equivalent of the ambiguity that Pete puts into his lyrics. In the way that Pete can write a line that is layered with multiple meanings that could all be true, Patrick can sing a line with just enough lack of enunciation so that you can fairly imbue it with multiple meanings. Like in "Kintsugi Kid," he sings, "I spent ten years in a bit of chemical haze," according to the lyrics in the CD booklet, but I've never been able to hear it as anything other than "bitter chemical haze" and I think I love that Patrick sings it in a way that preserves that possibility because it adds to the song's complexity for me. The same for the fact that I always hear "Could it last?" for "Cut it loose" in "(After) Life of the Party" and he always seems to sing it slurring enough to make that plausible for my ear. Sometimes I genuinely think they put the wrong lyrics out there to give plausible deniability to what Patrick is singing lol
