marcus and evelyn lovelace were part of mercy organization from its inception. evelyn in particular was a young researcher in biomedical who was part of the team that made solaris what it is today. a couple years before project genesis, she gave birth to her second child, guinevere. marcus was more hesitant about mercy and decided that it was best for him to raise her and her older brother, elidyr, in seattle while evelyn continued her work in apex city.

when guinevere turned fourteen, marcus was offered a position as a therapist in apex city, and the family was properly reunited. it wasn't surprising when eli joined mercy as a legacy junior agent a couple years later.

neve practically idolized both her parents and older brother and always assumed she'd follow in their footsteps. she excelled in her studies, driven mostly by an eagerness to make them all proud.

she studied journalism and political science before joining mercy as well. eli wasn't shy about being related to her, going as far as to help her train whenever he had the availability. their mother, however, decided it would be best if she stay out of the way of her children, though she occasionally checked up on them when possible and without raising suspicion of favoritism.

during her time as a junior agent, she forged a close bond with an agent who was in the same joining class as eli. both neve and this agent were driven by a shared sense of idealism and a desire to make a strong difference. when it was possible for them, the agent volunteered for project genesis and underwent the solaris treatment.

unfortunately they underwent a practically catastrophic transformation, emerging a changed person. when they'd previously been quite bright and optimistic, they'd become cold, calculating, and ruthless. they were given incredible powers but to neve on the outside, it seemed that it cost them their humanity.

neve began to distance herself from them out of concern for them as well as herself. still, she was chosen to come on what should have been a relatively easy mission that included their (former?) friend as well as elidyr along with another agent.

what should have been a routine recon mission spiraled out of control when the four agents' cover was blown and they were ambushed. off guard and outnumbered, the team were forced to fight for their lives as they fled. guinevere watched as the fourth agent fell dead, and then as their (former?) friend used elidyr as cover for the two of them to escape the immediate fight and find a way out. neve made the split second decision to detonate a cache of explosives they had discovered earlier, allowing them a distraction to escape the carnage, though the mission had clearly been an absolute failure as valuable intelligence was lost along with two agent lives.

haunted by these events, wallowing in blame, and tormented by the knowledge that she was somehow responsible for the death of her brother and another agent, she knew she should have left right then. however, she figured that if she was already so close to graduating from junior agent status, she may as well see it through and take solaris.

yeah... solaris didn't work for her. they waited weeks and it amounted to absolute zilch.

horrified by everything she experienced and disillusioned by project genesis and mercy as a whole, her decision to leave mercy behind and forge her own path was reinforced. she cut ties quickly and started up an anonymous blog regarding apex city as a whole.

also um at some point her mom went missing???? so she's also using what remains of her connections to figure that out.

a year ago, she was given a job interview at apex news network, and was hired as a reporter. she's determined to uncover what the hell is really going on, though she keeps that very much on the downlow as she doesn't want to seem too conspiracy theorist. for now she does her due diligence as a reporter and ex-mercy agent by utilizing what remains of her connection to mercy to get information that will be useful to the network.

born and raised in a little town in france by a couple who were both teachers. very normal life, very normal things. max always held an interest in the human body, medicine, pharmaceuticals, etc and did what he could to learn more. the d'aurevilles were literally the perfect family... kind loving caring etc etc.

[ parental death tw, fire tw ] when he was a teenager, he left a space heater on when he went out with some friends. unfortunately the wiring / circuitry in the house was old and not up to code and the whole thing ended up burning down overnight with his parents still inside. unfortunately they didn't make it.

maxime moved across the world to live with his dad's younger brother, wife, and their three kids in washington, usa. became incredibly reserved and closed off during this time for obvious reasons. through himself into his studies further.

ended up graduating top of his class in highschool, worked as an EMT during college (during which he was forced to confront literal fires quite a few times and never really was able to deal with that considering the guilt he's been carrying, but he trudges on!), and went to a very well ranked medical school for an md/phd program. particularly he was interested in solaris and the true effects of it on the human body. eventually this + the past he ran away from + his time as an emt + some other stuff i can't think of right now caught the eyes of mercy, and he joined as a junior agent while he completed his medical degree & residency.

after being placed in the biomedical division, he felt that it would be unfair of him to be administrating solaris without having taken it himself. there was no way he could anticipate what would happen, and while at times he regrets the whole thing, he understands that what he did benefits everyone around him as he is able to help relax patients and relieve their pain when needed.

met his husband, an agent in another division, when he was around 35. they hit it off pretty instantly and got married a little over a year later (read: they went to the courthouse and signed papers and called it a day. no one has time to fuck around with all that when theyre mercy agents). they were married for five and a half years, and have been divorced for some months now. while they both claim it was a mutual decision, it probably wasn't, but max isn't gonna say shit about it.

part of the reason max brought up separation was that he noticed some strange memory loss effects & a hand tremor for himself which was... disconcerting. he's the head of the department for fuck's sake, he has to keep it together. overall, pretty selfish of a decision, but it wasn't made overnight. he weighed the pros/cons and made a list (it took up approximately a quarter of a new journal) and came to the conclusion that it is more valuable for him to figure out why this is happening while balancing his duties as head than it is for him to worry about his husband whenever there's a mission. stupidest doctor you will ever have the displeasure of meeting.

skittish, evades questions like its an olympic sport. can get a little emotional pretty easily which is Not fun for anyone within his vicinity (see below). cares for cats more than he cares for himself. having a terrible fucking time always and it's obvious. practically lives in his office. does not want to be head of the department but alas, he still has the ambition he had when he was younger and is somehow determined to not let teenage maxime down.

max can freely manipulate prexisting pain by increasing or decreasing how much pain he, or someone else, is feeling.  through practice, he has learned how to induce pain from nothing, but it's much more difficult, energy draining, and often overwhelms him with pain as well.  it is much more effective to amplify preexisting pain. no physical contact is required, as long as he has eyesight with the person / people he is effecting.  can transfer his own existing pain to others, but it's an unstable process.  is able to create a subconcious aversion to his presence, if he really wants to, by inducing very subtle amounts of pain within people around him. 

unable to control this while asleep or uncious, and nightmares or other such strong dreams can cause him to unintentionally induce a level of pain within anyone in his vicinity.  

can't permanently remove pain, but he can temporarily alleviate pain that a person is feeling.  often, he has to take that pain on himself.

hair went grey shortly after taking solaris because of the stress of the pain he was feeling as he wasn't able to properly control or understand his ability.

max attributes his hand tremor and moments of memory loss to his solaris intake / radiant status,  though he's told no one else about this and intends to keep it this way.

kind of? yejide doesn't believe in luck exactly, but they do believe that sometimes things happen for a reason, and that the best thing to do is to just let it happen. he wouldn't attribute the recent mercy things to bad or good luck, but rather just Things That Happened and it was out of their control. they do believe in karma more than they do luck, which is why he tries to do good always to have some of that returned to him, whether that be in the form of good luck or something else. at the end of it they're a math person and luck is just statistics dressed up all pretty so 🤷

absolutely no planning in the yejide muyiwa household sorry! she prides herself on being a quick thinker, and quick thinkers can't think quickly if they're always relying on pre-planned things. she much prefers the chaos of just winging it and seeing what happens. yejide claims that their best ideas come from having not planned or thought about doing what they want at all. holidays + birthdays are exceptions to this as she wants to make sure that the person they are celebrating is enjoying their day to the fullest. for celebrations, she goes all out with planning months in advance.

i can't lie to you max was a supernerd :( he did incredibly well in studies, consistently ranking the highest in his class, and he only really fell off after the death of his parents, after which he struggled quite a bit. over all, his favorite subjects would be biology + chemistry in high school, & biomedical ethics in university. these were also his best subjects. his worst subject over all was anything to do with economics / finance / etc.

definitely more on the subtle side! he's very generous with his affections because he doesn't see the point in hiding them when life is so fleeting (mind you he got divorced for no fucking reason?) however he has a difficult time showing it, especially outside of the comfort of privacy. he's not excessively fond of public displays of affection. shows love through quality time + acts of service and in relationships will do a lot of acts of service as he likes to feel useful. he may not explicitly say he loves you but you will know, and that goes for both platonic and romantic dynamics.

neve's first instinct is to blame herself, especially when she sees it happen, as it did with both her friend & brother. in her mother's case, she blames that on external forces (mercy) because she, in her eyes, had no direct involvement and no influence in changing what happened. neve becomes extremely investigative during these times and will often start isolating herself as she figures it's the best way to 'solve' the 'problem'. spoiler: it isn't.
