Pope Francis has died aged 88, the Vatican confirmed on Monday. His final public appearance was on Easter Sunday, when an aide read a message in his name urging a ceasefire in Gaza and describing the humanitarian situation as “deplorable”. The pontiff, hospitalised in February with double pneumonia, was the first pope from the Americas and led the Catholic Church since 2013. He had been an outspoken critic of Israel’s war on Gaza. In December 2024, after an Israeli strike on Jabalia killed seven children, he said: “This is cruelty, this is not war.”
