One day — one fine day you’d get to live the life you’ve always dreamed of. And a part of that dream was to have enough money to not worry about paying bills on time. But that day was not today.

Your eyes skimmed over all the various mails informing you of the due dates and the amount to be paid. This was not new to you, it happened every month but each time you felt like leaving everything and going somewhere secluded.

With a dramatic sigh, you placed all the bills in a drawer and stacked them neatly in accordance to their due dates and shut it back. You’ll see what to do when the time came.

“Don’t worry.” You were jerked out of your thoughts when Wanda placed her warm hand on your shoulder. “I know you’ll do it, and I can always help you. You know that right?”

Wanda was your best friend and she knew you better than you knew yourself. She was well off and married to Vision, who had now become your friend too.

You knew Wanda would help you at any moment you asked, but you didn’t want to. You could, and you had to solve your problems by yourself.

You ran a small yet cute bakery and today you had to deliver a very big order for a grand party arranged by none other than Bucky Barnes. That man literally ran New York and you were super nervous if he would like your cupcakes and pastries and sandwiches.

It wasn’t his first time though, every morning his right hand man, Steve Rogers, came to your place to get a coffee. Apparently the mob boss didn’t trust anyone except his best friend to not poison his coffee.

Wanda, ever the best friend, had come over to help you prepare these delicacies. “Thank you Wanda. You’re the best. I’ve done this before and I’ll do it this time too.” You were very lucky to have Wanda in your life.

“I believe in you. Now let’s pack these sweet cakes before I gobble them down.” You both chuckled and got back to precisely placing everything in the boxes. Once it was done, you loaded them in your car and started towards your destination.

Once you reached, you couldn’t help but gawk at the magnificence of the house. It was absolutely huge and lavish and honestly the best house you’d ever seen.

The interior of the house was just as impressive as the exterior, expensive rugs and curtains, impressively comfortable couches and seats, and spectacular showpieces which were probably cost more than your house.

You hadn’t ever seen Bucky in person, but from what you had seen in pictures, he was dashingly handsome and the aura he exuded was absolutely commanding. He seemed very sure of himself and what he wanted, and probably that was what made him different from the rest.

The party was yet to begin, and you and Wanda were led to kitchen by a man named Walker as you carried the boxes in your hand. You both sighed with relief when you placed the boxes on the counter as the most dreaded order was finally complete.

“That’s all. Thank you for your service.” He replied in a practiced tone and then turned around and started to walk away. You passed Wanda a look. “You’re welcome. But what about the payment?”

“Your cakes getting served at Boss’ house is an honour itself. Be contended with that.” You stared at him with utter disbelief. “What the fuck do you mean by that? You’re not going to pay me?”

You had worked your ass off since early morning and had made preparations from even before and this man had the audacity to tell you that he wasn’t giving you your hard earned money.

“First of all, I won’t tolerate that tone with me. Lower your voice down. And second, I’m not going to pay you. Consider this a gift from your side to boss and just leave.”

There was not a single chance in hell that you were going to leave without your money. “But Steve always pays me. Where is Steve? I want to talk to him.” Steve was genuinely a good guy and you knew he’d help you.

“He doesn’t have time for some worthless things like these. Now go before I make you leave.” You clenched your teeth and formed fists with your hands. “You know what? I’ll sue you in court and then let’s see who wins.”

It was the worst threat you could give, but you didn’t have anything else. Wanda pulled your hand and call for your attention and mouthed a ‘let’s go.’ You stubbornly shook your head and refused.

“You are gonna sue me? And how are you gonna do that, you poor helpless thing? tsk tsk tsk. The judges are all on our payroll and they’ll make sure you’re the one who is ruined.” Walker said condescendingly.

Once he completed his ranting, a small wicked smile spread on your lips. You pulled out your phone from your pocket and held it in front of his face. “All that you just said is recorded right in this phone.”

Walker’s eyes widened, “Delete that.” He was visibly tense at your unexpected move. “I don’t think so.” Wanda was scared for her life while you had smugness written on your face.

He swiped his hand ahead to get a hold of your mobile but you swiftly put it behind your back. “Break it all you want but I’ve already forwarded it to my friends.”

“Listen to me you bitch, you better delete that, or else you won’t like what would happen next.” Though walker was threatening you, you could see sweat beginning to form at his temples.

“I could send this to your rivals and they’d love to screw you up as this is a clear proof of your illegal activities like bribing the judges in court. But I will definitely delete this if you pay me double my money. So the ball is in your court, you poor helpless thing.” You said repeating his words.

“Double? That’s impossible.” He said exasperated. “Okay then I’ll send it.” You pretended to scroll through your phone. “Okay wait. I’ll pay you. Delete that.”

“Fine.” Walker searched his wallet for a wad of cash and handed it over to you. You mock saluted him and showed him your phone devoid of any voice message and turned around to leave.

Once you and Wanda were out of that house, Wanda started yelling at you. “Were you out of your mind? You could’ve died there. Do you know who these people are?”

“Don’t worry Wanda, we are safe aren’t we? And I got double the money I was expecting! This is gonna pay a lot of my bills. And I didn’t record anything, that walker was a fool to believe my words. It was written across his face that he’s all talk no action.”

While you were happy with your little stunt, you were unaware of the amused eyes following your every move. A huge smile was gracing Bucky’s face as he looked at you from behind the curtains.

Bucky had been walking through his house with Steve at his side when he had heard a commotion coming from the kitchen. This party was important to him as it would strengthen his relations with Tony Stark and he wanted it to go smoothly.

Annoyed with whoever it was causing a ruckus in his house, he had walked up to the door with the intention of firing them. But then he’d heard what you were saying and stopped himself from going in further.

Bucky had ordered John Walker to see that today’s party went well. He had giving John enough money to pay for everything needed but what he hadn’t expected was for John to be such a bastard and pocket that money himself. Bucky wasn’t a man who forgave people and John was definitely going to get fired.

Bucky was honestly impressed with your quick wit; and that was saying something. He had met a lot of people from different walks of life and not many surprised him anymore, but you did.

Once you had left the kitchen, Bucky had followed quietly behind you. And for a moment even he had thought you had a recording until he heard you say otherwise to your friend.

“Who’s she?” Bucky finally asked Steve as he saw through his window as you and your friend left in your car. “She runs the bakery I get you bagels from every morning.”

Bucky still had a taste of your confectionaries on his tongue. He loved your baking but hadn’t thought even in his wildest dreams that you would be so beautiful and bright.

He saw the all encompassing fire burning in your eyes, and he craved it. “Find everything you can about her. And make everyone understand that she’s mine.”

Bucky knows he made a mistake. He knows that trying Peter's products always ends badly, but he still ate the damn shrooms, anyway. The worst part is, you're not even here to settle his wild thoughts.

"You alright, boss?" Peter asks timidly, raising a brow. "Feels good, right? I was thinking we could start selling it. We could make millions."

"Not now, Parker," Sam barks, recognising the look on Bucky's face. "Just go get some water." Once Peter leaves, Sam leans into Bucky. "You okay?"

"I can see the future," Bucky states, sitting back in the armchair with his gaze on the ceiling. "My fairy. He's gonna hurt my fairy."

Sighing, Sam pats his shoulder gently. "Y/N's safe and sound, boss. Barton's got eyes on the venue. She's protected."

"He has men on the inside," Bucky says with wide eyes. "Fisk has a guy on the inside, I know it. I'm psychic, Sam."

"Fisk is in prison, and you're not psychic-"

"I've unlocked my powers," Bucky cuts him off with a grave tone, sitting up. "Fisk has connections. He knows how much fairy means to me. He's gonna kill her."

"Boss-"

"I gotta get to her," Bucky says desperately, standing up and breathing heavily. "I need to save her. I promised her I'd always keep her safe - I need to save her, Sam. It might already be too late!"

"Alright, alright; you can go see her if you really want to," Sam gives in, standing up and taking out his keys. "But I'm driving. You're fucked."

Twenty minutes of Bucky yelling at Sam to hurry the fuck up later, they finally arrive at the small restaurant.

Bucky all but sprints into the venue, on high alert as he looks around, ready to kill anyone who looks suspicious. The restaurant has been booked out for the party, with cutesy decorations and finger food.

Spotting you talking to your friends, Bucky is utterly relieved. He can't help but rush over, grab you by the waist and plant his lips right onto yours in a deep kiss. You're surprised, to say the least, but quickly get lost in the kiss as he holds you tight against his body as he tongue plays with yours. It's as though everyone around you fades into obscurity. The music is silenced, the presence of your friends forgotten. All that matters is Bucky, and how right it feels to be held by him as he sticks his tongue down your throat.

Fuck. Is this it? Is he about to tell you he's in love with you? You can't say you haven't seen it coming, but it will change everything. You almost feel safer as just his friend, but damn would it feel good to hear him finally admit that he wants more from your relationship.

When he pulls away, you let out a nervous laugh, your heart racing. "What- what was that for, Jamie?"

He cups your face in his hand, and for a second he feels stone-cold sober. Why did he kiss you? He doesn't think he can answer that himself. Afraid to confront the possible truth, he clears his throat. "Uh... I'm high as fuck," He utters, completely ruining the moment.

Admittedly, you're disappointed. Feeling deflated, you nod. "Oh," You whisper, hoping it isn't obvious that all you can think of are his lips. "What are you doing here?"

Remembering his psychic reading, Bucky grabs you tightly again. "Fairy, you're in danger."

You're taken aback by his words, offering your confused friends a shrug as you pull him to the side. "Um, what?"

"He wants to kill you," Bucky says with a wild look. "But dont worry; I'm here to save you."

Looking him up and down, you frown with concern. "How much coke are you on right now?"

"Not coke; Parker gave me these incredible shrooms, and they helped me realize that I know everything about you, even your future," He rambles. "And you're gonna be killed unless I save you, fairy."

Knowing he's out of his mind, you remain calm, not wanting to set him off or upset him while he's in this state. "Right. And who's trying to kill me?"

Looking around the room, Bucky frowns. "Is this- what is this?"

"It's a baby shower, Jamie," You tell him. "I told you about it last week, remember?"

With eyes as wide as saucers, he looks down at your stomach and places his palm on it. "You're pregnant?" He asks you, lowering his voice. "Is it mine?"

Snorting, you push his hand away and roll your eyes. "I'm not pregnant, Jamie- and how would that even be possible?"

"Magic?" He whispers. "Fairy dust."

"I think you need to lay off the fairy dust, Buck," You mutter, before taking his hand in yours. "Come on. Let's go home."

After giving your friends an apologetic goodbye, you take Bucky home, thankful for Sam who gives you a ride.

Once you're at his place, you take Bucky upstairs and take off his jacket and shirt.

"What's this?" He questions you with a smirk, watching you pull down the zipper of his pants. "Are we about to fuck?"

"No," You say between laughs, putting him in a comfy t-shirt and pyjama pants.

"I can still see the future, you know," He claims childishly, sitting down on his bed and pulling you down onto his lap. Leaning closer, he whispers, "And you're about to let me fuck you."

Although on any other day, you'd laugh and tell him to screw himself, the emotional day you've already had prevents you from being able to take his words lightly. With all of your friends getting pregnant and married, you feel like something's missing, and the distance between you and Bucky is beginning to feel bigger and bigger. The kiss earlier has only amplified your feelings, leading you to realize that you're no longer satisfied with just being his friend.

"What's wrong, fairy?" He asks with a pout.

You get off his lap to sit next to him instead, looking down. "Nothin'."

"Is this because I wanna fuck you?" He questions you. "Because I always do."

"Stop," You whisper, sniffling as your eyes tear up. "I hate when you say stuff like that."

"What?" He turns to you, confused and concerned as he reaches out for your hand. "What are you talking about, fairy? You know I'm only kidding."

"Exactly," You huff. "You're always kidding. Why can't you take me seriously for once?"

"Woah, baby, I'm always serious with you," He mumbles, stroking the back of your hand. "You're the most serious thing in my life. I love you."

"Not how I love you."

There's a short silence that follows your words, during which you feel a heavy onslaught of regret. Fuck. Why did you have to say that?

"I love you in every single way possible," Bucky claims stubbornly. "I can't even - all I can see is my love around you right now. It's like this pink... cloud. And you're the only one who has it."

"You're so fucking high," You grumble, rubbing your face. "You're not even gonna remember this conversation."

"So, tell me," He pushes you with a slight slur. "Tell me how you love me."

You purse your lips together, almost feeling nauseous.

"Tell me," He whines, burying his face in your neck. "Please, fairy, baby. Tell me."

Letting out a shaky breath, you gather your thoughts before speaking. "I love you in the way that I don't think there's a single thing you could do to make me stop. You're the most special person in the world to me, the only one that truly matters. I love you and it kills me, but I still love you because I'd rather die small deaths everyday than live without you."

He whimpers against your skin, resting his hand on your thigh.

"I love you more than I should," You realize out loud, shocking even yourself. "I love you more than a friend. Even more than a best friend. You don't just have my love; you are my love. It means nothing without you being on the other end of it. But you're not... so I guess it does mean nothing."

His soft snores pull you back to reality. Looking down, you realize that he's fallen asleep, and you can't help but laugh at your own foolishness. You find some comfort in knowing that he'll have forgotten your admission by the time he wakes up - if he even heard it in the first place, that is.

"I love you, Jamie," You whisper, stroking his hair. "More than you'll ever care to find out."

“Does she always have to talk so much? I can’t believe someone can hold a speech over pancakes. Is she never tired of hearing her own voice?” Standing in the doorframe of the common room you clasp one hand over your mouth.

You believed Bucky enjoyed your conversations. Since he moved in two months ago you tried to be a friend, a companion he can talk to when Steve is not around.

Never in your worst nightmares would you have imagined Bucky could be annoyed by your small talk.

“Barton, that’s not funny. Y/N tried to explain how credit cards and electronic article surveillance work to him. Last time he went shopping he got lost, didn’t know how to pay.” Sam throws in. “Maybe it was a long conversation, but Y/N meant well.”

“I know, Sam.” Clint sighs. “Sometimes she just won’t stop. I had to fake to go to the restrooms last time.”

“Guys, seriously. Stop talking shit! Y/N is not talking too much. Only as men tend to only grunt or throw ten words per day at each other doesn’t mean a girl talks too much.”

Natasha slams her fist onto the kitchen counter. “She’s kind, nice, and smart. All Y/N tried was to help Barnes.”

“Exactly.” Wanda purses her lips, glaring at Clint. She’s challenging the archer. Daring him to say another word about you. “Now back to breakfast. Who’s on duty?”

“Doll, where are we going?” Bucky sighs as you harshly tug at his wrist. 

“You must see this, Bucky. It’s perfect…”

You want him to follow toward a shop, hidden at the end of an alley. He frowns as the store looks a little…shabby. The windows have cracks, the door has seen better days, and in front of it stands a box filled with old books… 

“Ah, I get it. You found another bookstore.”

“No!” You drop your hand from his wrist to cup his face with both hands. “Bucky, that’s not just an ordinary bookstore. It’s the one I visited when I was a little girl.”

At that, Bucky smiles. He softly says your name, as you keep on babbling about how much you love the store. “They give away books for free too, look.” You point at the box which has seen better days.

“What did you say last time?” He dips his head to glance at the books. “You cannot buy another book.”

“But…uh…that’s a bookstore, and it’s impolite to not buy a book if you enter it,” you conclude, and batt your eyelashes. “Let's go inside. I’ll show you my secret spot.”

“Secret spot?” Bucky furrows his brows. You are adorable to him when you talk about books and your passion for reading. “Let’s go then. I don’t want to miss the chance to see your secret spot.”

You give him a wink. “To more books,” you smirk. “I knew you’ll love it.”

Bucky follows you inside the bookstore. It looks a little better inside, but not much. The shelves look like they are going to fall apart at any time and we don't want to talk about the wallpapers, carpet, and reading corner. “Y/N, be careful. These shelves…”

“Are my dreamland!” you clap your hands. “Look over there.” Pointing at a spot at the far right you grin. “That’s it. My secret spot.” You whisper. “I used to hide there from the world when I was a kid. And sometimes before I met you. I sat on the ground and read books.”

Bucky’s heart wants to burst as you tell him you didn’t need this place since you met him. “It’s a nice bookstore.”

“It’s a wreck of a store,” the owner clicks his tongue. “But it’s all I have.” The elderly owner says. He has seen better days too. His shirt looks worn-out, and his tired eyes tell Bucky he didn’t seel much lately.

“Doll, how about you look at the books,” Bucky whispers, hoping you won’t get lost between the shelves. “I’ll be right there.”

“More books…more books.” You chant like the bookworm you are. “See you later, Bucky Bear.”

And off you go. Bucky watches you, chuckling as you look over your shoulder to blow him a kiss.

“She’s a nice young woman,” the owner says. “My only constant customer. If not for her, I’d close the store.”

“Hmm…” Bucky looks around the store again. “How much longer can you keep the store open?”

“Not much longer, son,” the man shrugs. “It’s…everyone buys books online or at that fancy new store in town. I can’t keep up, young man.”

Looking at you, happily roaming the shelves Bucky sighs. “What if you get a little help? My girl loves this store, so…what do you need?”

The owner gasps. “I…I won’t lend money from you Sir. I can’t pay it back.”

“That’s not what I had in mind,” Bucky shushes the man. “I’ll help you keep the bookstore open, and make sure people will buy their books here, and you will not give up business as long as you want to run the store. If you ever want to close it, I’ll buy it.”

“Young man,” the owner nods knowingly, “you must love that girl with all your heart if you offer to safe my business.”

“I’d do anything for her.”

“I had someone like her once upon a time too,” the owner says. “If it makes your girl happy, I’ll keep the store open.”

“Deal,” Bucky offers his hands. “I’ll send my lawyer this week. You can tell Andy how much money you’ll need to keep the business running and to do some…renovations…” Bucky hands the owner his car. “If you need help, give me a call.”

“Thank you, Sir…”

“BUCKY! Come here! I’ll share my secret spot with you,” you call for your boyfriend, waving your hands. “Hurry!”

“I’m gonna marry that woman,” Bucky grins. He already got the ring. He just needs to prepare the perfect proposal…
