Female Portrayals in Video Games

Recently Overwatch released a new character, citing complaintsof a lack of ‘body diversity’.  Now, Idon’t like the character but that’s for a variety of reasons and that’ll becoming at a later date.  No, what really botheredme was this argument and the implications for a common trend in representation of women in video games.

To add some context, I’m a gay woman and I want to be a game dev.  I’ve loved video games and been a gamer for close to 15 years.  And I really feel there are pressing issues with the arguments for ‘representation of women in video games’.  I’ve made similar rants about this general topic before and you can find my most successful one here.

The city of Philadelphia will pay $2 million to a Black woman who was pulled from a car, beaten by officers and had her toddler used for social media fodder by the police union, officials said.

Nursing aide Rickia Young was headed home in the early morning hours of Oct. 27, 2020, when she unknowingly drove into a large protest over the police killing of Walter Wallace Jr.

She tried to make a three-point turn to get away from the tense scene when officers smashed out her windows with their batons, according to her attorneys.

Young was handcuffed and separated from her teenage nephew and 2-year-old son for several hours, and no one was ever charged or cited, according to the woman’s lawyer. The hearing-impaired toddler lost his hearing aids during the tussle.

The Fraternal Order of Police, the nation’s largest police labor union, posted a Facebook picture two days later showing Young’s toddler in the arms of a Philadelphia police officer just after the incident.

The new DRAFT U.N. Resolution, set to be voted on today, calls for:

Secretary General António Guterres to appoint a senior coordinator “with responsibility for facilitating, coordinating, monitoring, and verifying in Gaza, as appropriate, the humanitarian nature” of all assistance, and demands that “the parties to the conflict cooperate with the coordinator to fulfill their mandate without delay or obstruction.” • ... “immediate and unconditional” release of the hostages. Although the resolution's language was toned down, this is a sign of progress. While such measures are long overdue and should have been honored from the start, we must do everything possible to meet the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza and relieve unfathomable suffering.

There are a lot of little lines in TFA that sort of tip you off that something isnt quite right with the "heroic autobots" and it just gets more pronounced once you've noticed it. Like everything about Optimus's speech in the first episode. "We're all cogs in the great big autobot machine." Emphasizing the needs of the collective over everything else (and notice that this is apparently something he says a lot. Something he's internalized). "Don't try to be a hero, it's not in your programming." Idk bro sounds like functionism to me. But probably the most unsettling line is Ratchet's implication that they can just.. delete emotions. Just run a program and bam! That feeling of dissatisfaction with your lot in life? Gone. Thats a big old red flag if Ive ever seen one.

it’s “funny” to read tweets about Sam and Bucky supposedly respecting Lemar more than John when it’s not fucking true. Most of the time they did not perceive his existence and did not react to his death in any way, forgetting about him after a second, and also Bucky got out of the car when Lemar says “battlestar”, and you praised this behavior when he literally showed him demonstrative disrespect for nothing. but no, the main characters are saints and have never allowed rudeness and disrespect to others, and only John is the worst.

I'm sorry in advance this is a lot of questions! How many and what languages does everyone understand? Which ones do they speak? Is there anyone who isn't very good at English and needs someone to translate for them from time to time? Also, does Rung know like... Every language since he's an AI? If yes does he help the team translate things if needed?

I haven't been able to go onto any Bucky posts because they're usually accompanied by John Walker antis, so I don't know if anyone's actually discussed this. But it doesn't sit right with me that we watch Bucky go through the entire season atoning for his past as the Winter Soldier, only for it to end with him still going by The Winter Soldier. This show really stopped caring about Bucky at the end, and we couldn't even stay for the apology to Mr. Nakajima they've been building up since the first episode. I'm already not too pleased that Falcon is no longer going to be a character, it would have been interesting to explore more into "Captain Falcon" or even retire the shield entirely instead of giving up his original name to an already existing character. Even John Walker gets to be his own character (US Agent). Quick rant: I don't know how people can look at the new Cap and call it representation, we had representation in Falcon. The show wanted to discuss race by having Sam represent a country that supposedly doesn't represent him, and in doing so, ironically rid us of an original black character in favor of a yet another white character (This is an observation on blackwashing, not an anti-white post). And before you say: "Cap is a black character", just remember, under every John Walker hate post, you'll find people quoting "There will never be another Steve Rogers". If you immediately saw John Walker as trying to replace Steve whenever he held that shield, it would be a double standard not to feel the same when Sam holds it. Both wanted to do something good with it, but only one got the chance to be taken seriously
