When KIBUTSUJI MUZAN had the GOATED villain entrance in anime history.
Tsubomi is probably aroace, honestly. Being queer in a predominantly non-queer setting can be quite isolating, which has its own additional aspects for aro and ace people, since we can't just translate the general experience of romance into something that makes sense to us the way people who do experience attraction can. She's described as having some distance between herself and her friends, and she doesn't seem to have interest in anyone romantically. When in the epilogue, it's revealed that Mob rekindled his friendship with her after all, it's not portrayed as being indicative of any romantic subtext. It's just what it is: a rekindled friendship.
Middle school is a time where a lot of allo people start to realize what kinds of people they're into, so it's a confusing time for aro and ace people. It's hard to pinpoint an absence, after all, and the world is so amatonormative. There's an expectation that wanting a straight romance with one other person is the norm, and anything else is thrown to the side. It's just as hard for people to realize they want something different as it is for people to realize they don't want any of it. Tsubomi's distance from her friends and her disinterest in any of the guys who asked her out seem to fit this.
This is Kaori, she’s the Hidden Wood (Kobayashi clan) village doctor and the first wife to the clan leader Jiro Kobayashi. Her personality is quite timid but she is very stubborn when she wants to. Her work with medicine and herbs is unmatched to anyone, her passione to help people comes off as healing to the point the marking on her forehead appeared after her patients are properly nursed back to health.
But due to her patients being healed from even the most life threatening condition she was seen as a witch in her old village and was treated so poorly that she was banished from the village. When she stumbled upon the Hidden Wood village she healed an injured bear and it guided her into the village. The elders saw that she was no threat and had them tended to an injured Jiro. Once nursed back to health they fell in love and got married. He gifted her that hair pin she wears.
Jiro also has two other wives, after marrying Kaori he marries Tenshi who was a fellow hashira that he met through his sister Akira and lastly the women he was formerly engaged to named Ares. Who unfortunately got married by Tengen after Jiro called it off due to a family crisis.
So I've been meaning to comment on this for a long while, but I haven't for whatever reason. Does anyone else find the Bakugo and Todoroki friendship absolutely forced and fake? Because Bakugo is way too much like Endeavor, especiallyin the beginning. If anything, I find it way more likely that Todoroki would be triggered by someone like Bakugo since he acts and behaves so much like Endeavor. And please don't come at me with that whole "Bakugo has changed and grown" crap. That apology he gave in season 6 was manipulative at best! It was a bunch of excuses, and the fact that he ended it with that whole "this doesn't change anything" just made me hate him more, if anything. But yeah, I just find the whole Todoroki Bakugo friendship wrong. Especially since Todoroki is so close with Midoriya, and he grew up in an abusive home. He may have been sheltered, but I doubt he'd be able to ignore the red flags in Bakugo and Midoriya's relationship, especially after the sports festival.
I swear I just wanted to talk about how much I love Tsubomi and then it turned into a 4,000+ word dissertation on her, Mob and why I think Tsubomi is so important to mp100’s narrative despite, or maybe because of, being a very minor character.
I haven’t counted, but I think Tsubomi shows up in less than 30 pages throughout the entire comic, plus a single omake. That’s really not much, especially considering half of those appearances are just to point out that she’s present in the given scene.
In other words we never get to know much about her and she has no character development to speak of (unless you want to call her remembering that Mob exists character development). Normally that would annoy me to no end - Love interests that only exist to be love interests and the “guy gets the girl in the end (as a reward)” trope is boring at best and offensive at worst.
I was apprehensive while first reading through the comic because right off the bat it looks like mp100 sets itself up to follow the “guy gets the girl” narrative. However, ONE did a pretty clever thing with the trope by both taking advantage of the expectations we have for it and completely discarding them.
“Middle school boy tries to impress the girl he’s in love with” isn’t exactly an adequate description of mp100’s plot. Anyone can see from very early on that that isn’t what the story is about at all. But to Mob? To Mob that’s exactly what it’s about. Everything Mob does that doesn’t involve people being in immediate danger, everything Mob wants to change about himself, is to some degree motivated by Tsubomi. In his mind Tsubomi is the end goal and he’s doing his best to make his life a “guy gets the girl” kind of story.
But, by thinking like that, even after years of never actually talking to her, he has put her on a pedestal where she has become an ideal and no longer a person. Mob never really talks about Tsubomi or gives any explanation as to why he likes her so much, and I guess because she’s the school idol and lots of boys are interested in her, no one really questions it either. Of course he would like Tsubomi, right? Everyone likes Tsubomi.
Tsubomi gets to stay on her pedestal, silent and with almost no sign of a personality, for almost the entire comic. It isn’t until chapter 94 that we get to see her as an actual person, because that’s when Mob, for the first time within the comic’s timeframe, treats her as an actual person by doing something as mundane as handing her a paper tissue because she sneezed. Even Takane Tsubomi sneezes you know.

It really leaves a sour taste in my mouth how 1A really does fuck all to be there for Izuku while does everything to be there for them.
They sit by and let Bakugou bully Izuku.
While watching Izuku (and ONLY Izuku btw) trying to make sure Eri had a good time at the School Festival, they call him disappearing to get candy apples troublesome and problematic.
Instead of examining WHY Izuku believed it was safer for everyone if he struck out on his own and pushed himself to his physical and emotional breaking point, they take Bakugou of all people at his word that it's All Might's fault, ambush him, and then quite literally beat him into submission.
While Izuku's grappling with the trauma of losing OFA and having killed Shigaraki, no one checks up on him or reassures him that he's not some horrible murderer. I understand that they all had their own traumas, but if they could rightfully be there for Ochako, there's no way in hell they couldn't have done the same for Izuku.
Once Izuku loses OFA and graduates, 1A falls out of contact with him while his supposed first ever actual friends make a hero team on their own. Technology exists. They could have at the very least texted him, especially considering how sad and lonely those 8 years were for him. To make matters worse, they only get back in contact with him once he has the means of being a hero again through Iron Izuku (for that matter, did Tokoyami wind up getting Dark Shadow back?). To make matters even more worse, it's implied that they're all still in contact with Bakugou, who has done absolutely nothing to change his behavior and is a-okay after being told he wouldn't be able to use his arms again.
Really, for such an amazing found family, they're a bunch of fake ass friends to him in canon. I've seen fanfics that are infinitely better than canon at making 1A and Izuku's bond a more mutual thing.
the full cover i did for @kizukizine2023 🔥🌔😈🔥
it's based on "the night parade of a hundred demons", where a whole bunch of supernatural creatures parade into the real world. it's pretty iconic imagery to me, and the two most immediate examples i have of it being referenced is jjk's s2 op2 and the bridge crossing scene in spirited away.
other fun facts: the moon in the back is a waxing moon (one of the translations for kizuki/upper moon) and is visually inspired by botw's blood moon; hantengu is holding gyokko's vase lol; the character on their lamps is the one that denotes their being an upper moon, so they all have it in their eye as well.
hope yall pick up a copy of this digital zine!

Hello, I have a question regarding Bakugo, more precisely how his character is generally seen in Japan because to put it simply he’s one of the most controversial characters of My Hero Academia especially in Western fandom. I’m kinda curious how his character and overall writing is seen in Japan since I checked the link of the most unpopular characters and I notice that he’s one of the top three?
He’s a polarising character in Japan as well, just like in the West.
Obviously he’s loved by many and he’s been voted as No 1 in all popularity polls (except first), in the statue vote, etc. His fans also spend a lot of money on merch.
His fans tend to think that he’s the real classic hero of the story in a Naruto sense and tend to paint him as a victim with how 431 concluded.
But he also has critics - along the same line as Western fandom:
- those who think the story never really dealt properly with the bullying
- that he’s a bit of an author’s pet
If you want to read up on it, check out the replies / qrt for this post for example. It gives you a bit of sense as to the arguments
Scared of Lightnings. His first time wasn't a good experience, it brought him bad memories. 🌩️
