actually a really interesting angle of serizawa and reigen's relationship i dont see talked about much is the fact that, based on the way serizawa acts in confession arc (not wanting to leave reigen because he know's he's defenseless without him), serizawa is fully aware that reigen doesn't have powers. however, based on the reigen manga, where reigen tells tome he doesnt have powers and tells her not to tell serizawa, reigen has no idea he knows

As a fan of character relationship dynamics, I'm seeing a lot of odd "Serizawa and Reigen's relationship has no weight or substance" discussion on my tl recently, and it's important to me that this fandom actually understands the connection between these two characters.

The most prominent and probably most important narrative parallel being how Toichiro "freed" Serizawa by having him depend on him and CLAW, whereas Reigen freed Serizawa by encouraging him to be his own person while still including him in S&S and promoting real healthy connections with other people.

Toichiro towering over Serizawa while Reigen kneels to be at his level... Reigen sees Serizawa as an equal. Despite technically being "his boss," he includes him and encourages genuine discussions in both a personal and workplace environment.

This, and the way the two of them seem equally amazed and supportive/reliant of the other. Serizawa in Reigen's logical knowledge and street smarts and Reigen in Serizawa's psychic powers and spiritual experience.

On a more wholesome and personal note, there's also the fact that, after the climax of the finale, Serizawa was definitely calling Reigen in a panic to find out if he was alright.

Long story short, there's a lot of character interactions and development of these characters and their relationship if you really pay attention! Sure, they both have their own lives (Serizawa going to night school and Reigen... doing what Reigen does), but it's not like they're "just coworkers." They're very close, and they have a lot of canon material to work with!

i refuse to stop thinking about the fact that its heavily implied that mob knew that reigen didnt have physic powers. like im pretty sure he only asks reigen once or twice why he doesnt use his powers at like the start of the show as in s3 from what i remember he doesnt really ask him it at all, the only person bringing it up is reigen. not to mention even though mob knew that reigen was using him to some extent he still stuck around because reigen made him feel important. this ALSO collides with reigen lying to mob at the start to use him yes but its pretty clear towards the end that he also did it so that mob would stay with him as he thought that the only reason that mob stayed with him was because he thought he had physic powers that he didnt have. so reigen telling mob that he didnt have those powers broke down two barriers that they set up at once. mob's being that he knew that reigen wasnt just using him anymore and that he did genuinely care for him, and that he was basically telling mob "hey you dont have to be with me anymore i lied all that time and im sorry". and reigens being the fact that mob still stayed with him despite it as mob didnt care that reigen didnt have powers, he never did.

Honestly, I really don't like when people call Reigen "just a regular guy". Because he isn't that regular at all. Well, to me, at least.

He's extremely social, he has a lot of skills, he's smart, he's creative, he's kind. He always knows how to solve problems. He listens to people, and, most importantly, he helps them. He's wise, he's realistic, he's funny, he's open-minded, and he's scared but he often takes the risks. For himself, for Mob, and for everyone else. Also, yes, he loves his student and is ready to put himself in danger just to save him (friendly reminder that he was ready to die during the Confession arc, and even took his shoes off, which is very common for Japanese people to do before committing suicide). I really don't think your typical regular guy would do that.

Maybe he seems like he isn't special because of his lack of psychic powers, but isn't it quite unusual that he doesn't even want any to begin with? Reigen was never jealous of Mob or any other ESPer, even though, logically, he should be since it's very useful for his business. Yet he isn't. When Mob shared powers with him, Reigen didn't really care. He acknowledged these were Mob's instead of thinking that he suddenly got awakened, then kicked villains' asses, and that's it. Never even mentioned any of that after (if we exclude the book situation).

It's very fascinating how Mob, the most powerful (modern) psychic, lives a regular life, while Reigen, someone who doesn't possess any type of powers at all, is seen as someone eccentric. And, well, of course Reigen does have common adult problems, but it's the way he deals with them what makes him different. Or so I think.

No matter what your opinion on Reigen is, it's out of the question that his relationships with Mob are absolutely beautiful. Both of them complement each other perfectly, two lonely souls finding solace in one another, rejected — though temporarily — by society just to have peace in the inner worlds: Mob in Reigen's, and Reigen in Mob's.
