One of my favorite things about Ultra Despair Girls is listening to the kid characters talk.

Like Jataro and Kotoko especially just ramble on and on about weird shit because their attention spans are still at this young age. Even Monaca just automatically gets bored with something if it fails to properly catch her attention. Nagisa doesn’t typically display this trait out of all of them because of his childhood and how he was pretty much raised by abusive parents to be an overachieving perfectionist to even get any scrap of worth or acceptance from them.

So many kid characters in anime are boring or there to be all cutesy. I really love that the Warriors of Hope are just… really gross and absent-minded. It’s not that they aren’t clever or anything, but their imaginations are at the age of just being on overdrive and so they go on tangents or lose interest and think of something better, cutting off their current thought processes…

Like Kotoko just has to tell everyone what her favorite food is and also what her least favorite food is and what she thinks about giraffes or eggs… and that’s just funny and cool of her. Hell, I love it even when the kiddy stuff covers up darker things like Masaru’s design of this standard shounen-esque kiddo with the little bandaids and scratches look is really hiding an outwardly and physically abused child.

It’s just really neat is all.

not sure how much it counts as controversial, but the bit at the end of DR3 where the Remnants take the blame for the killing game has always rubbed me the wrong way. Not just because of personal beliefs about information, but also because in that very same anime, we see Junko blackmailing people and HPA trying to cover up their mistakes. If anyone finds out the truth about the kg, they’re screwed. Felt like it went against the theme a bit.

Yeah actually I would say this is the opposite of controversial simply because I don't think I've ever met or seen a danganronpa fan who thinks dr3 was incredible. I don't hate dr3 nearly as much as I've seen other hate it, but I have a very strong love-hate relationship with it. Especially for Future.

But I can totally understand having beef with that particular ending. (In fact I have issues with most of the Hope arc) All three of the main games, even the pessimistic one, have a theme of facing the truth no matter how awful. So it is a bit strange for danganronpa to hide the truth when the core theme has always been to expose it. I can understand the world not being ready but...it felt unnecessary. Because The Future Foundation needs to be completely rebuilt anyway. All but three leaders of the FF are dead, and one of them just kinda walked away to do who knows what. The FF is also incredibly corrupt and terribly built. There IS no need to save it by taking the blame because it's already dead by the end of the anime.

Top 5 Warriors of Hope

From my least to most favourite, here they are!

5. Monaca Towa

As the main antagonist of the game, I’m obviously bound to dislike her. But there wasn’t really anything redeeming about her. She was manipulative and calculating, and had tantrums whenever things didn’t go her way. I didn’t warm to her at all, unlike the others. That said, in DR3 Future Arc, she was totally different and I did start liking her there. But I’m basing this on Ultra Despair Girls, so bottom of the list she goes.

4. Nagisa Shingetsu

Unlike Monaca, I don’t actively dislike Nagisa. He’s just really forgettable. Despite surviving the longest of all the Warriors (except Monaca), I can’t remember anything much about him.

3. Jataro Kemuri

Poor Jataro, always getting put down by the others. I have a soft spot for him, but it’s not much more than that. In the game I found him rather irritating a lot of the time, and I’m not sure it was intended.

2. Kotoko Utsugi

She’s generally the upbeat, funny one in the group, and I liked that. She also seems to be the most focused on what they are doing, constantly reminding the others about the game they are playing. She was good.

1. Masaru Daimon

I saw something the other day where someone had said Masaru was their least favourite DR character. And I just can’t agree with that. He’s the most personable of the Warriors, and I didn’t mind having him around. I think a little bit of that was where he was the first of the Warriors you fought, and that meant he was the one that made you think “whoa hold on, these kids aren’t the monsters I initially thought”. The scene where he stops and beats his arm for trembling..that was pretty uncomfortable (in a game where everything was uncomfortable) and my heart really went out to him.

In all honesty, i love hiyoko the same reason why i love Kokichi and is because they're total assholes.

Seeing that post you made just now actually reminded me of something. This post-SDR2 RP blog storyline. Which claimed to be about the whole cast healing, and would be even-handed to everyone. Yet the writer's biases against Nagito constantly crept in, as there were noticeable double standards in the way he was treated compared to the rest of the cast.

Like I realized something upon looking at it again. It's Nagito, and Nagito alone who has to actually face his victims from when he was an Ultimate Despair. He's the one who gets ragged in person on by cast members from UDG. The others meanwhile? They never actually have to meet someone they personally wronged. There are no survivors of Novoselic (which got completely genocided in their version of events) ever confronts Sonia for example.

This is actually the case in a lot of fan works. It is very easy to tell when the writer has a bias against Komaeda. Personally, a thing I noticed when reading is that it feels like they all tend to put the other remnants in a good light while he is just. Separated. Similarly to how the fandom treats him in general by acting like he is the worst of them all. There's always that subtle undertone that shows they only hold things against him, which, again, is often because of the rooted ableism in how the fandom portrays him.

Funny... Since his actions really are tame compared to the others, he never even directly hurt anyone, unlike them. It's weird how the fandom doesn't hold the characters accountable for actual murders in the first place, but can I just mention how Komaeda (including Hinata) was the only remnant who didn't do anything violent and messed up except cutting his arm off?

As for Komaeda being the only one to face the people that he wronged, I saw that people even tend to make the remnants forgive each other immediately (or easily) or don't write any tension between them, making them friends. It's very confusing since they don't have normal relationships even in sdr2 and because they always make them target Komaeda with all the negativity... And because they literally killed each other. They would all be aware of how messed up they are and have to learn to accept it... They don't even have a reason to call Komaeda fucked up anymore because they've done worse, or rather he's fucked up too. They don't have to like him (they would realistically only tolerate everyone except the ones closer to them in the first place anyway), but it'd be way different, and they wouldn't be hostile. The fact that Komaeda would be peaceful makes that even more believable.

Ultra Despair Girls is honestly probably the best Kodaka has ever gotten at writing traumatized characters.

I’m confused, what did Haji do in ultimate despair girls (I only know about Komaru and the warriors of hope from the game)

//A lot of things. This is why I don’t stop at just him admitting to being a pedophile. Literally all the situations in the game time back to him and his father:

They treated Monaca like shit while she was growing up, which lead to her becoming cruel, manipulative, and accepting Junko’s influence in the first place.

They put Monaca in a position as Chief executive of Towa’s Robotics Branch, which is where all the Monokumas came from. Instead of monitoring what she was doing, they let her make them money and just turned a blind eye until it was too late.

They willingly cooperated with Ultimate Despair to both build Monokumas to intensify the Tragedy and manufacture both the air purifiers and the technology needed to fight the Monokumas while making Towa City into a safe haven. All because they were “in too deep” and valued their company’s reputation above all else. During the apocalypse.

When Towa City was suddenly but inevitably betrayed and thousands of people were dying, including his own father, Haiji refused to work with Future Foundation, a group who probably could’ve done a lot to help save lives and smooth things over, because he still thought the company’s reputation was more important than the lives of all those people.

He cowardly sat underground and did nothing for the longest time, something Toko actually called him out on, and would rather blame other people for the problems he and his father caused than take responsibility for them.

He makes an aside that he didn’t think Towa Group taking over the world would be such a bad thing? Yeah, maybe he just meant it as a joke, but I will never give this man the benefit of the doubt, especially not when he knows his family’s company is complicit all this.

When Komaru and Toko finally beat Monaca and got the controller for the Monokumas and Monokuma Kids away from her, even after being told over and over that smashing it would result in all the kids dying and start a war with Future Foundation to kick off a new era of the Tragedy- which Monaca literally stated was her plan- he keeps egging Komaru on to do it out of pure vengeance and spite. And then tried to take the controller from her to do it himself.

To expand on that latter point, he was willing to basically commit genocide on tens of thousands of children on the grounds that “they deserve it” for killing so many adults, even though were all under mind control and thus had no true agency in their actions. Which he knew, but still didn’t give a shit about. All he wanted was revenge.

And in the end, he still hasn’t learned anything and was apparently gearing up the resistance in the city to start a new plan of attack against the kids. Something that DR3 never followed up on, so we don’t know how that turned out, but I’m certain it wouldn’t end well.

//Tl;dr, he’s an abusive, cowardly, self-centered corporate brat who can’t take responsibility for his actions, willingly sacrificed millions if not billions of lives to preserve his company’s reputation as if it would actually mean anything, is fully and knowingly complicit in the emergence of the Tragedy to begin with, almost committed genocide and started a new war because he’s a vengeful idiot, and, oh yeah, the man is also an actual pedophile.

//I do not like Haiji Towa. At all.

There was never a person named Tsumugi Shirogane.

Following the successful implementation of the Neo World Program against the Remnants of Despair, Future Foundation learned all of the wrong lessons. They tasked Alter Ego with incorporating Killing Game simulations into the Neo World rehabilitation protocols.

It was decided that Ryota Mitarai's ideas were valid, he simply went too far in attempting to brainwash the world. Not mind control, but a global broadcast to remind everyone around the world of Hope's supremacy? Future Foundation felt that would be a good antidote to the Despair that had reigned unchecked after the Tragedy.

So began the age of Ultimate Hope. Each year, fifteen students infested by despair would be selected and entered into the Neo World Program. Alter Ego would concoct a fictional scenario for them to undergo, appropriating the imagery of Monokuma and Junko Enoshima. Corrupting them as they once corrupted the Neo World Program.

All under the guidance of a subordinate program to Alter Ego, taking the role of Chiaki Nanami for each season; Someone who would monitor the students from within, report back to Alter Ego, and keep the game moving. Sometimes male, sometimes female, blonde, brunette, tall, short. A new name and new identity, a different guise for each new season that could be changed as easily as flicking a switch.

The events within the program would then be broadcast globally, so all the world could watch with bated breath as Hope triumphs over Despair again and again and again. Season after season, year after year, students living out a twisted mockery of Junko's games as a perpetual reminder of Despair's futility.

With little regard for the long-term effects that being used like this would have on the selected children's psyches. Traumatizing vulnerable children for someone's idea of the greater good.
