A/N: Alright I think PHW simp hours are over, time to simp full time for my #1 Percy

* The hum of the train passing over the joints of the track might lull another passenger into a steady gaze, like a rhythmic lullaby.

* You, on the other hand, pull your father’s jacket around you right with each ‘Clack’.

* “You look like you’re a second away from turning into a mummy.” Percy’s half joking as he says it, amusement blooming in his eyes.

* “I don’t like trains.”

* Grover and Percy tilt their heads while Annabeth looks at you with concerned eyes.

* ‘That’s right, she was there last time.’

* Annabeth’s hand settles on your shoulder.

* “It’s okay, it’s different this time.” She whispers.

* She’s right, it is different this time. You have your staff and better control on your new budding powers. Your mind knows this.

* But your heart doesn’t, so at the next clank you arms instinctively wrap around you tighter.

* ‘Some traumas are not forgotten so easily.’

* “Hopefully we don’t end up owing Amtrak another 300K in protest damage like last time.”

* Annabeth rolls her eyes, and Grover gives you a half smile. No doubt he’s heard about the scolding Chiron gave you four, only silenced when Hades delivered a treasure chest on Cerberus’ back.

* You’re pretty sure it’s rotting away in some corner of the big house.

* Percy’s eyes flicker, a strained expression crossing his face.

* ‘If you want to know all you have to do is ask, it’s not like I keep secrets.’

* “On my first quest Luke broke the window of the train and we all jumped out.” You shrug as he gapes. “In hindsight it was pretty tame, we could have been drugged and petrified by a certain legendary figure.”

* This coaxes a laugh from all of them.

* You spend most of your time on the train fluttering in and out of sleep.

* You dream of hills and the salary smell of the ocean, you see a boy with gold hair and another with hair as dark as the night who run along a shore.

* You see a man tinted teal, sometimes blue, sometimes green sit a handful of paces away, something gold clasped in his hand, soft grass tickling his ankles.

* “What are you thinking about?” You asked, and he looks at you with a halfhearted shrug.

* He seems young, maybe barely 17 or 18.

* “I just think it’s unfortunate that there’s never been a happy hero.” He murmurs.

* It’s a heavy statement.

* “Maybe he’ll be the first.” You say, nodding at the golden haired boy—like maybe you know who he is.

* The man smiles.

* “Maybe.”

* You flutter into another scene, two men arguing on the beach, their faces and words hidden amongst mist, something gold twinkling beside them.

* “—I’m telling you it’s a mistake!” The taller of the shouts.

* “And I’m telling you that you don’t—” the shorter shouts back.

* ‘That looks tense. I think I’ll just stay out of it.’

* You’re staring at a girl fuming by a lake, long brown hair falling past her shoulders as she’s turned away from you as you’re jostled awake.

* You look up to meet three curious pairs of eyes staring at you.

* “We’re in St. Louis.” Grover Informs.

* “Annabeth wants to see the arch thing,” Percy adds.

* “That’s right, I do,” Annabeth confirms.

* The three of them look at you—as you groggily blink the blurriness out of your eyes—eyes glimmering with hope.

* ‘Do they think I’m their parent or something? They don’t need my permission to go.’

* “How far away—”

* Annabeth shoves a map in your face, her mocha-colored finger pointing at a red circle.

* “It’s only a ten–minute walk from the train station.”

* You look from the map to the three kids giving you puppy dog eyes and sigh.

* ‘No one ever plays fair.’

* “Sure, why the hell not?”

* True to her word, the walk to the arch is exactly ten minutes.

* You stand next to a bored Percy and a fidgeting Grover in the elevator feeling positively bored.

* Once you make it onto the deck Grover pales when he notices how high up you are, Percy looks even more bored, and Annabeth nerds out the entire time pointing to every fixture and saying:

* “I wouldn’t have put that there.” Or “That’s a bit of well done architecture.”

* ‘When I was twelve I had exactly one brain cell and it was thinking about cherry slurpees.’

* Godly children are really something else.

* Your bored gaze catches Percy’s after he had a chat with Annabeth about her future aspirations.

* He stands beside you wordlessly, looking at the St.Louis skyline before saying:

* “Do you think this place has a snack bar with blue raspberry slurpees?”

* You grin.

* “Are you sure you wouldn’t prefer Faygo flavored slurpees?”

* The bell that signals the observation deck will close in ten minutes rings overhead, and you feel the hair on your arm raise.

* Something about this feels wrong.

* Was there something about this place you’re supposed to be worried about?

* You watch Grover and Annabeth step onto the elevator, giving you wary glances when the conductor announces the car is full.

* “It’s okay we’ll take the next one.” Percy reassures.

* ‘See, this feels like the part in the movie where someone makes a mistake—’

* You hear a dog yelping the background.

* ‘—this is that classic separation tactic—’

* “What kind of dog is that?” Percy asks.

* ‘If that dog could shut up for five seconds I might be able to string together a coherent thought.’

* “This isn’t a dog at all,” your eyes go wide. “It’s an easy mistake to make.”

* ‘Shit.’

* “It’s a chimera!” You yell, pushing him aside just as her chihuahua jumps out of her purse.

* Percy makes the mistake of leaping before thinking, slashing the chimera but getting a civilian — and himself— injured in the process

* Percy, the kid who literally runs laps around you, staggers to the floor, his chest heaving. The gash in his arm is oozing with purple liquid.

* ‘Shit, he’s poisoned.’

* Echidna, mother of monsters is cackling a handful of feet away.

* “Do you trust me?” You ask Percy, who’s eyes shine as he nods.

* “With my life.”

* You look from him to the River below you outside of the observation deck.

* You gulp hard, one hand clasped around your staff, and the other pushing him off the deck and sending him plummeting for the River.

* ‘He should be able to heal himself there.’

* Which means it’s just you and this monster.

* “Aren’t you clever.” She hisses, her long purple hair wild around her.

* She doesn’t look much like a monster, she looks more like a lady…if you don’t glance down at her lower half that’s transformed into the reptilian encasement of a snake.

* You can tell she’s about to distract you with her verbal abuse while her chimera tries to attack you—like you didn’t notice she just did the same thing to Percy.

* ‘This is going to suck.’

* You take a deep breath, your fingers curling into a fist.

* ‘Just like you practiced.’

* On the exhale, your fingers unfurl and slowly your power curls from you in thick blue tendrils.

* Echidna’s shriek fills the air, followed by the whimpers of her chimera.

* You would feel bad if she wasn’t trying to kill you just a moment before.

* “Who sent you?” Your staff is pointed towards her, she only gives you a hiss as response.

* ‘That isn’t exactly helpful.’

* “Was it Zeus?” It can’t be Hades, now that you all are on the same page he’s not sending monsters after you. You doubt Poseidon would poison his own son, but you never know.

* This gets a choked laugh from her.

* “I only hear the call of beings older than the gods!” There’s a still moment where her eyes go wide, a wicked smile arched onto her mouth like she’s won.

* And then she disintegrates into dust.

* ‘Maybe she did win because I’m more confused than I was.’

* You look up to see the few people on the deck looking at you with wide eyes.

* ‘How are you going to get out of this one (Y/N)?’

* You look where Percy jumped, Poseidon might be friendly but he’s not going to heal you.

* Your eyes trace the arch, then you look at your staff.

* ‘There have been worst ideas.’

* And that’s how you found yourself skateboarding down the St.Louis arch, only remembering a minute into your skateboarding escapade that you were visible and taking the pin on your jacket.

* It was actually pretty fun, all disrespect to national monuments aside.

* You landed to the ground with a soft thud, the wings on either side of your staff flapping slightly. You watch the growing crowd around the entrance as a woman is ushered into an ambulance.

* You turn to see a completely dry Percy Jackson emerge from the river, looking about as miserable as can be with a footing sword in one hand and a limp of seaweed in the other.

* “How was it?” You ask.

* “Honestly? A little underwhelming.” He says flicking off lumps of moss.

* “As it always is.”

* Noticing the growing crowd and the addition of a news van informing on “missing teen at large—Percy Jackson.” You strip off your jacket and place it on his shoulders.

* “I think you should keep a low profile for a while.

* Annabeth and Grover make their way to you, frantic and bewildered.

* “What the heck happened?”

* “Monster.” You reply with a shrug, “you can say ‘hell’ Annabeth, we’re out here risking our lives for the gods—the least they can let us do is curse.”

* Percy fills you in as you walk back to the train station.

* “Your Father has summoned you, you can’t ignore that Percy.” Grover says, chewing a tin can to ease his nerves.

* ‘Wow, who knew all those times Dad called me out to help him and I didn’t go I should have been smited.’ You think dryly.

* Percy looks conflicted.

* “I heard Californian beaches are nice.”

* “The nicest.” Annabeth add and you nod.

* “So don’t think of it like you have to go, we want to see the beach and your dear old Dad just happens to be there.”

* Percy gives you an appreciative smile.

* They settle into their compartment again

* It’s only when you’re sure they’re asleep you let out a shaky breath, walking to the glass compartment where refracted light fills the room.

* A gold coin twitches in your fingers but you pocket it.

* You don’t think you could handle seeing him without breaking down.

* You opt for the payphone in the corner of the room, pressing the number you memorized all those years ago.

* He picks up on the second ring.

* “Hello?”

* “Hey Dad.”

* You hear a shaky breath on the other side.

* “This is an unexpected treat, what do I owe the pleasure?”

* It’s not often he gets phone calls in the underworld.

* You laugh, feeling your eyes grow warm.

* “Is everything okay?” He asks.

* “Yeah I just…” you swallow hard.

* This was your choice. You know that.

* But you’re starting to wonder if you can really fight all of godly society and expect to come out without a few casualties.

* ‘How can I take care of all these kids when I can barely take care of myself?’

* You feel oddly your actual age when you father calls your name again, asking if you’re still there.

* ‘Stay in the present, one day at a time.’

* “Yeah Dad, I’m here. I just missed you I guess.”
