no i actually love that classism is made present and obvious in haikyuu so much, like it’s made to fit so well as an important theme
the difference between the public, private and state schools is so obvious and, imo, well done (e.g. shiratorizawa vs seijoh vs karasuno)
furudate also hits on the urban/rural divide in terms of resources, security, educational standards, etc, and how that affects the tokyo teams compared with the miyagi ones, as well as others
it gets a really good balance between “ppl from lower income backgrounds can and do succeed”, and “ppl from privileged backgrounds have a far higher chance of success” and i love that
some of my favourite examples under the cut, in no particular order
kageyama and ushijima in general, and in their relationships with everyone honestly, but especially hinata and oikawa
“what have you been doing the last three years”
ushijima’s metaphor with plants growing in the best soil (in which the best soil is an elite public school) vs “i am hinata shōyō, from the concrete”
that line is so. fucking good.
karasuno’s vb team struggling to get access to the gym and daichi competing with other teams for facilities
the whole “you should have come to shiratorizawa” thing, especially ushijima and oikawa’s conversation after aoba johsai loses to karasuno (it’s really well done in the stageplay, i can’t find the link rn)
actually i feel like a lot of the fandom’s memes and jokes with ushijima stem from lines that are some of the most poignant examples of class dynamics
hinata cycling over a mountain to get to school
karasuno’s coaching team compared with the other ones, and the patchiness in having reliable teaching supervisors in the past
the timeskip jobs. shiratorizawa, nekoma and karasuno come to mind for me as schools that illustrate this really well.
also the difference in types of schools (e.g. dateko being a technical college) is really interesting when it comes to timeskip. actually, i feel like this’ll end up a whole extra post
the parallels and differences between tanaka, kyōtani and yamamoto
team records of making it to nationals, e.g. shiratorizawa dominating the miyagi prefecture
the roles of parents and the notable absences in many instances
‘the lucky ones’, i think is the chapter title translation - the one focusing on ushijima and sakusa post-timeskip - it’s a really good chapter
nekoma’s motto being ‘connect’ - it’s a key team value, but also highlights the privilege of being well-connected and living in the capital city. it also affects their timeskips, facilities, ability to hold training camps, etc
the everyone-knows-everyone vibe of the town karasuno is in. really hits the nail on the head.
tokyo having an extra team in nationals as the event sponsor slot (i forget exactly what they call it)
it doesn’t diminish the impressive abilities of the players who went to public schools (like sakusa, reon, etc) but also acknowledges the ways class privilege helped them to get where they ended up and i just think that’s a really good balance
oh yeah i live in the uk so in case there’s confusion, us public school = uk state school. public schools here are an extra elite type of private school (eg. eton, harrow, etc)
“Be careful. Don’t hit it again.” Chu Wanning’s voice was deep, like porcelain submerged in a creek, steady and dignified. It would have been a striking voice to listen to, if one weren’t listening to it through a shroud of hatred.”
No because what is this endless cycle of “I can love them but they can’t love me?”
I know I talked about their self-hatred a bit here.
I know the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree but this is ridiculous??
Always seeing it as a lens of giving to others but not recieving.
Lilia -> hatches Malleus and wakes Silver but runs away from them.
Malleus -> wants to make Lilia proud and helps raise Silver but doesn’t see the happiness his birth brought and calls himself useless in front of Silver who took comfort in him enough to be vulnerable with him.
Silver -> loves Lilia and Malleus but believes he doesn’t deserve that love given his heritage.
Sebek is out here just: 🧍♂️ “I’m surrounded by idiots”
It’s just so frustrating?? I know there’s learned habits of love but it’s ridiculous when you have learned habits of sacrifice too.
Because if you are always thinking about love this way, aren’t you diminishing the love given to you?
In return, does that not continue this cycle? That we see? Over and over? Because you are not receiving it as was intended hence the one who gives it to you freely…feels it’s not enough. Will never be enough. So they try harder and feel this self-depreciation because of it.
When that is not true!! It is enough! Always enough!! Ahhhhhh *hugs Sebek* 😭😭😭
(There are many more moments that show this cycle between the three but I chose these moments because they are the most well known and tumblr 10 limit image on the app my beloathed.)

FUCK?????????
I translated the Main Story Book 7 Chapter 4 Ep 63 (which is posted on my tl account over here) when it was first released, and looking back on it now, i realized that there's this part that hasn't been talked about(?) (or maybe i'm just out of the loop now LOL).
But basically there's this part where baul and lilia explains that they were going to 野ばら城 (which i translated as Wild Rose Castle) to deliver a message to Queen Maleanor, Malleus' mother.
If we break down the meaning of each character:
• "野" ("の/no") means "wild,"
• ばら ("bara") means "rose,"
• while "城" ("shiro") is just the word for "castle";
Thus, I translated 野ばら城 to 'Wild Rose Castle.'
HOWEVER. 野ばら on its own is also the Japanese translation of Goethe's poem, "Heidenröslein," which is a story about a young man who decides to pluck a small rose on the heath despite the rose's warning that she will stick him with her thorn. Here is a screenshot of a summary of the poem's text from its wiki page.
I think it's an extremely interesting choice on the Twst writers' end to choose this specific word as the name for Maleanor's castle since if you just wanted to search up an actual wild rose, you would have to type 野バラ instead (using the katakana バラ as it's the more common way to type the word 'rose' in Japanese).
Plus, taking into account the message behind Heidenröslein, I can't help but recall the actual Sleeping Beauty fairy tale AND the Maleficent (2014) movie. (Angelina Jolie herself said that Henry betraying Maleficent's trust and love just to take away her wings is like an allegory to rape).
Well, nothing much, really. Since they never touched on this topic again after Silver and the guys left Lilia's dream 😔. We'll have to wait until Heartslabyul dreams are over until we get new lore drops related to Diasomnia, but I just found this as an interesting etymology that I wanted to share! It also just shows the detail that the writers put into writing the main story as they reference content somewhat related to the stories where the characters are twisted from.
(I like to yap about twst lore so follow me if you want to see more of that + i'm in dire need of friends </3)
If you're seeing this, I demand you to go write at least 500 words on your current project.
Do it.
Do it.
Do it.

“Any advice on how to write friends to lovers without it feeling forced?” If you want to transition from best friends to lovers, the first thing you have to establish is what has kept them from being lovers until this point. Because that's why a lot of people don't find friends to lovers believable because they sit there a wonder, "You two have been interacting for years, you're both attractive, and you both seem to have crushes on each other and you have not acted upon this at all. Why not?"
The second thing you need to do for a best friends to lovers relationship, you need to figure out what the trigger is that's gonna make them start seeing each other that way or to start acting upon the feelings they have because, once again, they have been friends for a long time so what is happening right now that is making this the moment where they chose to come closer and act upon their feelings”
i've been writing in english for so long but instead of the language fully consuming my insides and acting like a parasitic english-speaking colonizer worm started feeding on my brain, i just ended up fucking my english grammar and conversational skills a lot more often than usual 💀
there's something so perfect about silver's first words being the jp equivalent of "papa" all because lilia was reading a children's book to him where one of the characters was looking for their "papa" and silver ended up repeating the word. when silver first said it, lilia didn't want silver to call him as a dad but silver kept on repeating it until lilia ended up accepting that he IS silver's dad. i'm heartbroken man
guhhh these two
i think it's very interesting that Malleus' name is a reference to the book Malleus Maleficarum, which outlined the dangers of sorcery and witchcraft, that was written by some guy name Heinrich Kramer. haha. not to be a lore nerd rn but........
