the mechanisms are a steampunk folk concept band! if you’re familiar with the decemberists, some of the stuff david bowie has done, or steam powered giraffe, it’s a bit like that- each album tells a story! (the albums are all tragic space operas, with the added bonus of being very queer!)
the bit where it starts to get complicated is the band itself. they’re all playing characters, and they do their shows in character! so, basically, the narration on the albums isn’t omniscient- it’s being narrated by the mechanisms, who have opinions about the story and tend to get involved in it at some point. to differentiate them from the actual band, i’m going to refer to them as ‘the crew of the aurora’!
further details under the cut! (edit: added some links!)

Maybe, somewhere else, they got their heartwarming epilogue💫
Post-Starcourt Steve and Robin needing to get the hell out of the mall parking lot and being like, “I have this friend. He’s close.”
Cut to Eddie standing at his bedroom door, holding his guitar like an axe because he’s pretty sure someone just broke into his house and is going to murder him. When he busts out the door holding a lamp above his head (didn’t want to break his guitar), he nearly bludgeons a couple of puke covered ice cream sailors.
After they all stop screaming, Steve looks at the lamp and nudges it like, “Lighten up, man.”
Eddie: What are you doing here?
Steve: Relax, my friend lives here.
Eddie: I live here
Steve: Are you my friend? No??? Then I’m talking about someone else. Duh. *makes a gesture to Robin like ‘this guy.’*
Robin, making the same gesture back: We are going to sleep on your couch.
Eddie: …Are you guys high?
Steve & Robin, after considerable thought: A little.
am I crazy or does this actually slaps
i'm not even the sort of person to dwell on lyrics or poetry usually but some of those lines hit so close to home that i really wish i had the patience and emotional capacity to go look up and read and think about more of their song lyrics
I think my personal favorites, from that quiz at least, are these:
“The truth is this: My love for you is the only empire I will ever build. When it falls, as all empires do, my career in empire building will be over” (this is the nonsense of love by mindy nettifee)
“We were born to try / To see each other through / To know and love ourselves and others well / Is the most difficult and meaningful / Work we’ll ever do” Atlas Nine by Sleeping at Last
“What is that? What is this? What is this? Huh? This is an encyclopedia containing the Latin names of the ugliest parts of my insides / I’m choosing to use it like a compass in times of peril.” Milo - An Encyclopedia
“The world digs a hole in your yard & its up to you to fill it, up to you to find something useful to do with your sadness.” - Outbound, Hieu Minh Nguyen
“Been up until dawn and all of my heroes are gone, babe / But I know they’re out there / I know they’re out there” Phantogram - Answer
“Then you hold life like a face between your palms, a plain face, no charming smile, no violet eyes, and you say, yes, I will take you I will love you, again” - Ellen Bass
“‘You dreamt of me?’ 'No, I thought of you’” (Portrait of a Lady on Fire)
I hope that at least gives you some options to think about without having to look them up yourselves! Thank you for enjoying the quiz and I am glad some of my little collection of favorite words meant something to you c:
The SS Warrimoo, a passenger steamship traveling from Vancouver to Australia, was silently knifing its way across the mid-Pacific waters. The navigator had just finished calculating a star fix and handed the results to Captain John DS. Phillips.
The Warrimoo's coordinates were LAT 0º 31' N, LONG 179 30' W. The date was December 31, 1899. "Know what this means?" First Mate Payton announced, "We're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line."
Captain Phillips was prankish enough to seize the opportunity to do the nautical feat of a lifetime. He summoned his navigators to the bridge to double-check the ship's position. He altered his course slightly to focus directly on his target. He then altered the engine's speed.
The calm weather and clear night worked to his advantage. At midnight, the SS Warrimoo rested on the Equator, exactly where it had crossed the International Date Line. The ramifications of this odd arrangement were numerous.
The ship's bow was in the Southern Hemisphere, in the middle of summer. The stern was in the Northern Hemisphere, in the midst of winter. The date on the aft portion of the ship was December 31, 1899. The date on the forward half of the ship was January 1, 1900. The ship experienced multiple days, months, years, seasons, and centuries simultaneously.
When will my husband (Ao3) return from war (is up again)
my mom just had a 7cm brain tumor removed and since she's woken up she's been talking nonstop about this dream she had about going to an art gallery full of colourful paintings by a 'homosexual artist' named klimsdorf who was ethereal and wise, both young and old... at first she was convinced he was a real person but after failing to find him online she's accepted he was a figment of her subconscious mind and is now determined to bring him to life via painting his portrait herself. she's 67 and has never drawn in her life. and now this. blorbo from her tumor
