my education life
this is your friendly reminder that although social media is popular and everyone seems to have it, you shouldn’t feel pressured to keep up and you don’t have to be there for everything. it’s okay if you just watch youtube videos and tik toks and to delete instagram whenever it bores you or makes you feel insecure or anxious. there’s a world out there you’re allowed to experience without being part of this online culture.
Back to (Online) College
Since my classes begin tomorrow and it is mostly online I thought I'd share some simple study/self care tips that I will be sticking to.
Decide where you will work - even if it is at your kitchen table, having a designated work spot is so important for online classes and study. I understand that for some people this can be difficult, so you could break up your day instead of sitting down for a few hours straight.
Get enough sleep - Summer is over, it's time to settle back into a semi-normal sleeping pattern. Being tired can be a terribly difficult roadblock for concentration.
Get up early - by this I don't mean "get up at 6am every day". I mean don't stay in bed until five minutes before your class starts. Get up maybe an hour or so beforehand, which leads me to my next point-
Eat breakfast! - it will help you concentrate on your study. Plus, now you're at home you can snack throughout the day as well!
Hydrate! - It is SO important to drink water regularly. Try to keep a tall glass or a bottle nearby when you're working.
Wash and Dress - if you don't have the time or energy to shower, you can brush your teeth and wash your face. Trust me, it will makes a world of difference. It also might be tempting to throw a sweater on over your pyjamas for lectures, but you will feel a lot more alert and ready to work if you change out of the clothes you slept in. A change of underwear and even clean joggers and a shirt can freshen you up a lot.
Take your breaks! - even a 15 minute break for you to stretch your legs and grab some air will help so much!
Stay in touch with your friends and classmates - working alone can feel very daunting, so it might be a good idea to reach out to friends and organise a study session on a group call or video chat. You needn't be lonely just because you're alone.
Keep any medication you take close to where you work - I started doing this not long ago. It can be frustrating to have to break the flow of work to get up and take it, so it may be tempting to leave it until later. If you have it within arms reach you can take it without disruption. It also might help to set an alarm if it is time sensitive.
That's it! This is a pretty basic self care list for studying online but sometimes it's best to keep it simple. Good luck my loves and mind yourselves!
nothing wrong with being easy to please! give all the books you read five stars. watch that movie again after people tell you that it wasn’t that great. play that band’s new album on repeat, even though it’s not supposed to be as good as their old stuff. refuse to say anything critical about something you thought was cool. be bold in telling grumpy people “actually i liked it a lot!”
This hit hard. I’m glad they put this bit in, I couldn’t have put my experience in better words. It’s important to step back to think what a success is and do a check. Where do I want to be and why? If I’m not there, am I taking the steps towards that goal? And a reminder that progress isn’t linear. Sometimes we have other things going on and have to take a step back to take two steps forward.
Things take time. That’s a reminder.

the most precious bunch
We’re now only entering the fourth week of online classes and I’m already feeling burnt out. I’ve only started to pay more attention to my signs recently so I think this is a win for me, realizing and admitting that I am in fact burnt out.
Anyway, I hope you’re all doing better, drinking water regularly, trying to get decent sleep every night, eating your meals, just,,,, being healthy physically, emotionally and mentally !!
And if you’re like me, suffering from a burnout, I hope we get to find the rest we need so we can realign ourselves. feeling burnt out is normal, it’s okay. we just need to find ways to cope up. take care everyone !!
Finally, after two weeks I can write about my academic struggles! How are you, folks? How are you all holding up?
Last September 10, UP decided to resume classes even after the students’ and the faculty’s numerous calls to postpone it. Some students, even teachers, got confused with their class schedule and were met with various technical difficulties like power shortages and poor internet connection. It was chaotic and pretty exhausting.
Luckily, some teachers were kind enough to let students adjust to the new mode of teaching first before getting right into the discussions. They explained to us how they were only given 14 weeks to teach the whole material for this semester. This made me realize how hard they simplified the lessons to make it easier and clearer to understand and so their generosity weighed heavier than before.
I also started to get the hang of using Notion, and as someone who was intimidated by it before I can say Notion is a very useful app. I think I’ll write about my template on future posts. I hope I could explain it better, then.
I know I said before that I will try to revive this studyblr, but I realized that I’m doing a pretty shit job at it. If you guys want to be friends or simply just to have someone like and reblog your posts, hit me up! I’ll try to interact better. >____<

I write this following me currently listening to a podcast regarding this and after watching Alyx Arumpac’s documentary “Aswang” (tr: monster/demon).
“a chick is placed on the coffin of the deceased when their killer is unknown. if there is no justice, it will knock on the conscience of the sinner. but the demon will not care for the knocks of even a thousand chicks.” – Aswang (demon), dir. Alyx Arumpac
I go into the best detail I can manage about the drug war under the cut but the most pertinent information and what I want to say remain above the cut for everyone to see.
additionally, to skim, you may focus on bold text.

Now without further ado, let’s get to it.
This is my major reference: https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2020/country-chapters/philippines aka Human Rights Watch’s Report on the Philippines based on events from 2019.
Disclaimer:
I don’t pretend to be an expert on this. Additionally, I speak from a position of privilege, as I have not been personally affected by these issues. But I try my best to be informed on the situation and empathise with the people concerned. I’m linking sources below too.
there are other issues of police brutality/misconduct, details here in a report by Amnesty International, but as a summary:
ineffective implementation of safeguards
torture
torture of children
corruption
isolated (but no less important) cases of locals and internationals alike being abused physically, verbally, etc.
intimidation and threats against filing charges
misogyny and rape culture
more details on the War Against Drugs below the cut, but this is an excerpt:
Official PNP (Phil. National Police) statistics cite deaths at 5,000+ during 2016-2019 (despite an earlier statistic of 6,600), but human rights groups estimate the actual death toll to 27,000+.
these are additional recent scandals (all of which only after COVID-19):
extreme punishments towards those who have violated quarantine guidelines (e.g. someone shot and killed, a journalist arrested for taking off his mask in a jeepney to drink water)
in comparison: a high-ranking officer had a birthday party during enhanced community quarantine [x] [x]
people detained during pride march
people detained during anti-terror bill protests [x] [x] [x]
jeepney drivers detained for protesting jeepney phaseout
police telling women to watch their clothes to not be raped
the rape-slay of a 15 year old girl by 2 police officers after she was refused accompaniment home at night
in those arrests, more often than not, when police are asked on what charges the people have been detained, there is no clear answer.
as a side note, the prosecutor who signed for the release of Pride20 was gunned down. (the 50th among the list of judges and lawmakers killed under the administration)
side notes
as a whole, the government’s “solution” to COVID-19 has been:
military-based (as opposed to centered on healthcare/medical aspects),
involved police brutality and selective justice
silencing dissenters with the passage of the Anti-Terror Law and arrests
spreading false news
fighting with experts in the University of the Philippines
NO MASS TESTING DESPITE PROMISING SUCH IN APRIL AFTER PUBLIC PRESSURE
Police brutality is only one aspect that will come into play once the Terror Law is effective. Not only will they be emboldened to act even more atrociously, but the law will protect and allow such acts, even condone them, to an extent.
Even from the start, the law itself is unconstitutional and the definitions of a terrorist are vague. If you express criticism or dissent, meet up with people (with the possibility of collusion), etc. you can be branded a terrorist. Additionally, the detainment period has been extended, and police will be allowed to look into your personal communications and essentially wiretap/keep you under surveillance for a longer period of time if you are suspicious.
Now keep in mind that there is also the recent denial of a major news company’s renewal. Meaning they have lost their right to their channel airwaves. This is the oldest and most far-reaching news company, with branches in regional languages for those in the provinces. There will be less media coverage and reports of arrests and human rights abuses, and much less people will be informed (especially those in remote areas who could only access this channel). In essence, the government has more control of what they (don’t) want the people to see.

since my writing post was received pretty well, i though i’d make other, to give some insight on the racism in the film industry and why it’s still a big problem now as it was in the past.
Today, I managed to check 1 out of 2 on my to-do list, and honestly? that felt better than not checking anything!
It’s been so long since we had this lockdown, and with the way things are going: the lockdown would be longer. Some provinces are apparently going into a GCQ, but if it’s not needed, please stay at home! At the very least, wear a mask! Still, we continue to advocate for mass testing!
Last night, I had this Big Brain moment. I was wondering what to do during this lockdown, and I realized that I have my studyblr! I thought this might be the best time to actually work on establishing my studyblr since I have nothing much to do. I would probably put up a more concrete introduction in the next few days, but basically this is my way of doing something productive. I managed to clean out my studyblr, and I also managed to clean my room. I may not have made all the progress I would want but, hey! Little progress is still progress.
Quick academic update:
i’m planning to shift to a different course;
i’ve managed to start working on my requirements (yay!!!);
uplb admin is, once again, evident on their anti-student tendencies.
I’ll post a proper write-up about this soon. I’ll try and head to bed early now since I’ve realized that I can work better on my academic requirements during the day. Here’s to hoping I get up early tomorrow lol.
Anyway, I hope you’re all safe and healthy! To all my fellow Filipinos, stay vigilant! We only have at most 7 days before the terror bill automatically becomes a law. Read up, stay hydrated, and get enough rest!
if you’re a small studyblr (<100 followers) and active, reblog this post! i want to queue original content from my fellow small studyblrs

Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet
idk who needs to hear this but when your english teacher asks you to explain why an author chose to use a specific metaphor or literary device, it’s not because you won’t be able to function in real-world society without the essential knowledge of gatsby’s green light or whatever, it’s because that process develops your abilities to parse a text for meaning and fill in gaps in information by yourself, and if you’re wondering what happens when you DON’T develop an adult level of reading comprehension, look no further than the dizzying array of examples right here on tumblr dot com
