Damian was truly, devastatingly alone.

He always was, in a way. He had never had someone who cared for him, only what he could offer. But now, in Paris, he was truly alone.

After the coup, where Deathstroke killed his grandfather, Damian fled. He knew that he didn't like the lifestyle he was living. He also knew that in the confusion, it would be the perfect time to escape. Unfortunately, Damian didn't have anywhere to go.

It took him a while, but soon enough he got to Paris, France, a big city with even more people. The perfect place to hide in plain sight.

He staggered his way to a park, starving and exhausted. He slumped against a tree and immediately fell into a deep sleep, feeling safer than he had his entire life despite being out in the open.

He woke up hours later, possibly the next day, to a young girl, looking to be around his age, shaking him.

"Hello? Monsieur, monsieur, please wake up!" Remembering what he had done, Damian shot up, bonking heads with the girl.

"Ow!" they both shouted, rubbing their foreheads. The girl, however, quickly recovered.

"You're awake! I was starting to think you were dead!" He glared at her, to which she slightly shrunk back, but didn't stop talking. "Are you okay?"

His glare turned to a confused stare. "What?" Now the girl looked concerned.

"Are you okay? You're not hurt or anything, are you? My parents own the bakery across the street, I can go get them!" She stood up to leave, but stopped when he grabbed her wrist. She turned back to him, tilting her head. He quickly let go.

"I'm not hurt. Tt," he said, looking away with a faint blush. She was cute. "Just surprised is all."

"Surprised at what? Me asking if you were okay?" When he didn't respond, that was answer enough. "That's ridiculous! Everyone needs someone to care about their wellbeing!" She stood again, this time hauling the boy up with her, much to his surprise. "You know what? You're coming with me! I don't know how you ended up here but it's obvious your home sucks!" She started to drag him to her house before he came to his senses and stopped.

"No," he said simply, trying to back away. Unfortunately for him, the girl had an iron grip and he didn't want to hurt the first person to care about him.

She turned to him and raised an eyebrow. "You seem to think I'm giving you a choice." At his obvious surprise, she rolled her eyes. "Look, you were sleeping in the middle of a park. You're obviously hungry and by how dirty you are, I'm assuming that you don't have anywhere to stay. Am I wrong?" At his silence, she continued. "I'm not going to force you to stay with me and my family, I am giving you the option. But right now, we are going there to get you some food. Are you okay with that?"

He searched her eyes and demeanor, looking for any sign that she was deceiving him. He looked for a long time, but could find none, something that confused him. Everyone always wanted something from him.

"What do you want from me?" he asked bluntly, taking in the surprised look on her face. It quickly turned into another smile.

"I just want for you to be happy and healthy." He reeled back in shock, staring at her wide-eyed.

"But why?" At her confused look, he elaborated. "Why care? Why offer me your home? It doesn't make any sense. You just met me; you don't even know my name. For all you know I could be planning to kill you all." She looked at him blankly, and then deadpanned.

"If you were going to hurt me, you would have already." She was going to say more, but Damian interrupted.

"But I could be deceiving you!" he stressed, gesturing vaguely. She looked unimpressed.

"Well for one, if you were you just told me your plans." He sputtered as she ignored him and continued. "For another, I've always been good at reading people's true intentions. I can tell that you're not." He simply stared at her before slowly nodding, seeing her face light up.

"So you'll come?" Another nod. "Awesome! My parents would be more than happy to let you stay, I just know it!" She began dragging him again before suddenly stopping, almost causing Damian to run into her.

"Hey! What was that—" When she turned, he stopped talking, mesmerized by the light hitting her at just the right angle to make her seem as if she was glowing.

"I'm Marinette! Marinette Dupain-Cheng! It's nice to meet you!" Shaking himself, he gave a tiny, genuine smile.

"My name is Damian. The pleasure is all mine." She nodded, smiling growing impossibly wider, before once again dragging him to her house.

She's an angel, he thought, watching as she laughed and looked back at him with a breathtaking smile. She has to be.

Walking into Tom & Sabine's Boulangerie Patisserie was nothing short of nerve-wracking for Damian, something he had never experienced before. He wanted—needed—Marinette's parents to like him. He didn't know or understand why, but he has always been taught to trust his gut. So that's what he did.

The bell above his head rang as he and Marinette crossed the threshold. The woman behind the counter, who Damian could only assume was Marinette's mother, looked up with a grin, her smile only growing upon seeing her daughter and him. Marinette bounced over to her mother while Damian cautiously walked closer, keeping an eye on everything around him. Unknown to him, Sabine noticed this.

"Maman, this is Damian! I met him in the park," she exclaimed, purposely leaving out how she found him, conscious of the various customers in the bakery. Sabine, of course, noticed this and motioned her back.

"Let's talk in the back, don't you agree? I can still watch the front, but we can have a private conversation." Marinette beamed and bounded to the back, dragging Damian with one hand and her mother with the other. Once they got out of earshot, Marinette made sure to speak before Damian could open his mouth.

"Maman, he has nowhere to go. He's starving and has no one who cares for him. Please, can he stay with us? He's nice and only wants the best." Damian saw it best to interject here.

"If it's a burden, then I can simply find somewhere else to stay. I'm sure I can—" Before he could finish, Sabine stopped him with a wave of her hand.

"Nonsense. You can stay here. If Marinette here likes you then you must be a good person." Damian looked around nervously, trying not to fidget under Sabine's scrutiny.

"Are you sure, madame? I mean, you don't even know me. I wouldn't want to cause trouble." He looked down, preparing himself for the inevitable rejection, when Sabine spoke.

"Now none of that. Just call me Sabine. Marinette's got good intuition. If she believes someone is trustworthy, they almost always are. Besides," she waits until the boy looks her in the eye before she speaks, "bad people don't care. If you were a bad person, you wouldn't care about causing trouble." He saw the sincerity in her eyes.

"Then thank you, Mme Sabine. My name is Damian." He stuck his hand out for her to shake, in which she grabbed it and pulled him into a hug. He stiffened and resisted the urge to flip her over his head and stab her. He recognized it as an action used to show love or affection, but he had never given nor received one before. He had a feeling he would have to get used to it. Eventually, she released him and he let out the breath he was holding. Sabine narrowed her eyes, but smiled and turned to her daughter.

"Marinette, why don't you take Damian upstairs and make you two some lunch? Your father and I will be up soon, okay? In the meantime, why don't you take a shower? Marinette can show you where everything is." Marinette nodded excitedly.

"Of course!" She paused, looking Damian up and down with a critical eye, making said boy uncomfortable. Soon enough, she looked back into his eyes. "You look about the same size as Nino, so I think I have some clothes you can wear." She smiled as Damian frowned.

"Who's Nino?" he asked. Marinette facepalmed.

"He's one of my classmates. His birthday just recently passed and the first outfit I made for him didn't suit him so I made another." She looked him up and down again as he squirmed. "Actually, it would suit you really well!" She then turned to her mother. "Maman—" Her mother chuckled.

"Yes, we'll go clothes shopping tomorrow." She opened her mouth but her mother kept going. "And yes, we'll go to the fabric store so you can make your own clothes for him." Marinette beamed and gestured for Damian to follow her. Her smile shone like the moon, lighting up his dark world without hurting him in the slightest. It made him smile.

He had a feeling that meeting Marinette would be the best thing to ever happen in his life.

They charge you for editing, formatting, cover art, and more. With most of these companies, you will never seen a cent of any royalties made from sale of your book. A legitimate publishing company only makes money when you make money, they will never charge you to publish with them.
