Just what is Echo, Why Does McCree Have Her Chip, and how long has she been deactivated?

Okay, so from what I can gather from the short, the whole heist was set up by McCree with the intent of getting Echo back. As indicated by his “You never could resist a good tip” line and the fact that he was willing to let Deadlock have literally everything else on the train so long as he just got Echo’s crate. He knew Deadlock had the firepower to stop the train. So they blow up the train and expose the crate and he, in true McCree fashion, has to hope he can improvise his way out of a situation with the bounty he needs where he’s very notably outnumbered.

Now I’ve heard it suggested that Echo has been deactivated so long that she was in Overwatch before Winston joined, as indicated by her “Monkey?” line. But when McCree corrects himself, saying “Scientist! Whatever!” it’s clearly a nod back to the “Recall” short of Winston’s self-affirming quote of “I’m not a monkey, I’m a scientist!” So personally I feel like that exchange isn’t establishing that Echo is completely out of the loop so much as Echo being close enough with Winston to affirm his abilities as a scientist and defend him when others seem to underestimate him.

Basically my working theory is that Echo was decommissioned and deactivated when the Petras Act was enacted—she is not an omnium-produced omnic, but rather an artificial intelligence likely developed in hopes of bridging the gaps between humans and Omnics during Overwatch’s golden days and the bumpy years following the Omnic crisis. Not being an omnic and rather, being technically a piece of Overwatch equipment, Echo didn’t have the same established ‘personhood’ as Omnics and hence Echo was deactivated and placed in the custody of the US government–likely because she was created here in America, but it could also be because the US government threw a hissy fit in the post-Petras Act negotiations and insisted on keeping her in custody. 

Now, as far as McCree’s possession of Echo’s activation chip goes, there are two options–Either McCree took the chip with him when he sensed the inevitable Overwatch/Blackwatch power struggle, or, he stole the chip from UN/US custody after the Petras act was enacted. I feel like the former is easier to pull off, but the latter is not out of the question when it comes to McCree’s resourcefulness.

This is all speculation so take this with a grain of salt.

A long time ago an anon asked my thoughts about drawing backgrounds, so I finally got around to putting this together. It’s more prop-centric, but it still represents my philosophy to backgrounds. 

I’ll try to do something more about drawing actual background spaces in the future! Please let me know what you think, if anything is unclear, or if you have suggestions for other tutorials you might find helpful!

Spider-man Noir’s timeline takes place in 1933.  I don’t believe his age is stated in the movie (though I may be wrong), but Aunt May and Uncle Benjamin can be assumed to be in their 40′s-50′s since they’re usually starting to grey by the time we see Peter.  This means that they would be young adults in the 1910′s and surrounding years.  Why is this important?

Because the song “I’m A Member of The Midnight Crew” by Eddie Morton came out in 1909.

Imagine Spider-man Noir showing Miles some of the songs that his aunt and uncle used to play when he was a kid, songs that they’d dance to just as wildly as when they were a young couple fresh in love until they’d worn holes in their shoes—and with almost no fanfare, he puts this record on.

And Miles Morales, a teenage artist in the year of our lord 2018 who has definitely read Homestuck at some point in his life, will have a choice to make.

Echo, Maximilien, Zenyatta, and Bob go on a double date. Bob and Max just brag about Zen and Echo to any and everyone that is within earshot. Zen and Echo just can't believe that is how they see them.

Echo: This is my date, Max.

Zenyatta: *gasp* Echo, while I greatly believe in extending olive branches, I must ask if you are aware he is allied with Talon?

Bob: *taps Zen’s shoulder*

Zen: *looks over*

Bob: *signing* I’m still with Deadlock.

Zen: Well–yes, but Talon and Deadlock are very different–

Bob: *signing* We burned down the clubhouse of a rival motorcycle gang last week.

Zen: I–Really?

Bob: *shrug and nod*

Echo: *looping her arm around Maximilien’s* He promised me he won’t try anything. Won’t you, Max?

Maximilien: I assure you I will be on my best behavior–I’m not working, after all. Let us agree to make this experience… neutral ground, shall we say?

Zenyatta: Hmmmm

Maximilien: I can’t tell you how long I’ve been stuck surrounded by organics. We should take time for ourselves. Plot against the sweaty meatsacks…

Echo: *elbows him*

Maximilien: Kidding, ma colombe, I’m kidding.

Zenyatta: Admittedly the company of the other Omnics on the watchpoint can be…

Echo: Like babysitting?

Zenyatta: I admire their eagerness to grow and learn, but perhaps time among synthetic peers is due.

I’d say Zen is the gushier one than Bob, honestly. Bob deeply admires Zen but is also a bit more shy and reserved and doesn’t want to embarrass him. Bob is really excited to find out that Echo also knows ASL (You pick up all kinds of stuff from satellites, it turns out).

I wish that ao3 had an option to filter warnings (and tbh certain authors) out like I will never ever want to read it and just seeing it puts me off so much that often I end up closing my browser because that content upsets me so much lmao
