Even if he believed in all this gossips (and Larry said he'd not and Edgeworth believed him and not only because Larry is really bad in lying) then maybe Larry would be disappointed in Edgeworth but it wouldn't turn him away from Edgeworth.

It's not the same about Wright. Phoenix never tolerated lies and omissions. And if he will believe in all this gossips about Edgeworth then their friendship ends. They didn't see each other for about one and a half decades, nevertheless Edgeworth wasn't ready to hear that all is gone now.
