Thinking back to the time I was about halfway through TMA and was explaining the plot to a friend who has never listened to a single episode and they tried to make one of those "Soup was invented by John Soup when he wanted to drink a chicken" jokes and ended up saying something along the lines of "The Magnus Institute was created by John Magnus when he wanted to make an institute for all the fears" and at the time I was like haha good one bro but in hindsight I think I need to fucking throngle them with my bare hands
tma is a show which spends the first 100 episodes going "look at these monsters. aren't they fucked up. yeah and they're all so happy being monsters who hurt people monstrously" and then the protagonist who you've spent hours listening to at this point becomes one of those fucked up monsters, forcing you to either dismiss him as evil or you have to fully change how you view all the previous monsters. and then they spend the next 100 episodes dealing with that
i love fics that write The Distortion genuinely not knowing How to Human and getting something egregiously incorrect.
i don't mean appearance-wise, i mean silly mistakes. trying to wipe up a spill with printer paper because it misunderstood what a paper towel is. calling an animal by the wrong name.
describing emotions in a door/hallway metaphor. ("hallway full of bees" sorry, did you mean butterflies? distortion, you are experiencing butterflies.)
it was literally a door it doesn't know this shit!
i think it has some memories attached to "who" it is, thus why it can tell michael shelley's story, but little details like this? the nuance of the human experience? lost on it. too busy hating being even remotely like a who to stop and attempt to model after them properly.
this makes it mildly offputting and that's the goal so it's content <3
also @ distortion shippers this entity does not know how to kiss. gerry/jon/melanie/whoever else is gonna have to teach it how because it will just stand there, eyes open and everything, being a door.
I adore the fact that Michael Distortion is described as having a horrible laugh that sounds like a headache etc etc and then Michael Shelley shows up and turns out he's just always laughed like that. Jon and Co. were just bullying this poor man for his natural laugh this whole time
Thinking about MAG 101 again, specifically the line “He cared for her, he trusted her, and she fed him to me.” Like !!!! The fact that this story is being narrated simultaneously by the monster and the person being consumed by the monster, the fact that you can hear Michael Shelley in that line, and you can hear the Distortion, but neither of them can tell their own story because what they’re describing changed them so fundamentally that they don’t exist anymore in the same way they did at the beginning of it. Am I making any sense?

Infinite windowless hallways outside reality with a fucked up little creature in them? Oh shit! It’s the backrooms!” and The Distortion does not like that at all
tma AU where s1 jon comes across a ton of statements early on involving people named mike and concludes that mike-esque names are especially common among spooky folks. He then starts going “hello, mike” all cryptically every time he meets a new Spooky Lil Guy because he figures there’s about a 50/50 chance their name will actually be mike, and he’s just really desperate to look like he knows what is going on and is qualified for his new job. This causes people in the spooky community to think he is way further along in becoming the Archivist than he actually is (because how else would he know my name is mike if he didn’t Know it?), and people end up casually revealing a ton of information about the entities to him without him even needing to ask because they see no point in trying to hide what he clearly “already knows”

was scrolling through the "the mechanisms was Jon Archivist's college band" tags on ao3 and misread "martin finds out Jon is the lead singer of his favorite band" as Melanie, and i honestly think that would be a hundred times funnier. imagine your eldritch boss who you fucking hate but sounds vaguely familiar asks what you're listening to one day out of awkward obligation to make British Small Talk and you roll your eyes and tell him he probably doesn't know them and then you drop their name and he goes very still and flushes and suddenly Jonny D'Ville is speaking in your airpods and you're looking at your boss (who again, you fucking hate) and your world crashes and burns
I saw a headcanon somewhere about how Jon is always staring right into the camera when someone takes a photo that he happens to be in and it's all I've been thinking about. Picture this, a group of friends take a photo together that Jon is in the background of and when they look at the photo they notice him just watching. They turn around and notice that he's clearly in the middle of talking with someone and doesn't even notice them. Now THAT is my shit! We need more spooky photos of Jon!
The name Jonathan means 'God has given' while the surname Sims means 'He who hears' and I could write an essay on the importance of the name and how it connects to the plot of tma but I CANT because all Jonny did was PLAGIARIZE his FUCKING BIRTH CERTIFICATE
