✦ @booksociety’s Villains and Antiheroes event: The Folk of the Air by Holly Black “Cardan,” I try again. “You must not do this. I order you to pull yourself together. I command you to drink no more liquor and to attempt sobriety.” “Yes, my sweet villain, my darling god. I will be as sober as a stone carving, just as soon as I can.” And with that, he kisses me on the mouth. I feel a cacophony of things at once. I am furious with him, furious and resigned that he is a failure as High King, corrupt and fanciful and as weak as Orlagh could have hoped. Then there is the public nature of the kiss, parading this before the Court is shocking, too. He’s never been willing to seem to want me in public. Perhaps he can take it back, but in this moment, it is known.
I cannot overstate the importance of yelena being aroace for the aspec community
The importance of representation
Because we have next to no one
You can almost count aro characters on one hand and there are just very few more ace characters
Go look at the Wikipedia lists of ace and aro characters and compare it to the lists with lesbian, gay or bi characters
That's not great either but the difference is enormous
Our representation is stated afterwards at most and always, always debated
We don't even get side characters
Even the characters who are explicitly confirmed aren't safe from erasure (look up jughead Jones)
That's why every character matters to us
Every character that is explicitly aspec makes people realize that they are aspec
We cherish every character we have and we fight for them because how else can we ever get the representation we deserve
Even just an aroace-coded hero is so important
Because the characters that are aro-coded the most are villains
And they aren't just aro-coded and villains
They are shown to be villains because they are aro
Because they don't understand love, because they can't feel love
The only others are either not human or depicted as childish and naive
Do I have to tell you what this does to you
Even if you aren't told that you're broken or evil
It's always there in the subtext, all around you
So a hero
That means so freaking much
Because we can be heros to
We are people
And yes, we all need more representation
We are all so starved of it and yes, we will take every little sign
Because what else do we have
But this character, yelena, means so much to so many of us
Because this character was enough to get aromantic trending
Because people are learning about us because of her
Because people talking about it made people realize they are aspec
That they aren't broken
Because maybe we can get more than just a hidden statement in an interview this time
Because we need this
And we deserve her
I- SO IT WAS A DARE?

listened to Bohemian Rhapsody today… i’m so very sorry
Rape has become endemic in South Africa, so a medical technician named Sonette Ehlers developed a product that immediately gathered national attention there. Ehlers had never forgotten a rape victim telling her forlornly, “If only I had teeth down there.”
Some time afterward, a man came into the hospital where Ehlers works in excruciating pain because his penis was stuck in his pants zipper.
Ehlers merged those images and came up with a product she called Rapex. It resembles a tube, with barbs inside. The woman inserts it like a tampon, with an applicator, and any man who tries to rape the woman impales himself on the barbs and must go to an emergency room to have the Rapex removed.
When critics complained that it was a medieval punishment, Ehlers replied tersely, “A medieval device for a medieval deed.”
