73, Charlotte?

Lets see, 73 is Great King Rat by Queen. Yet another song I got into 'cause of Eidolon.

Hmm. I'll be honest, I haven't though much about Charlotte. She doesn't take up a lot of space in my head, except for thinking about how she went from White Kid with Dreads to known businesswoman and community organizer. I'd like to think that she lost the mayoral election because she still has the dreads.

If I was gonna make a fic about her....hm, we only get a limited sense of how she feels working under Taylor, especially given her past view of her from the bullying campaign. You might be able to write a neat fic that shows her view of Taylor during their schooldays as a pitiful, kind of disgusting figure, and then transfer to her viewpoint during the warlord era where she sees Taylor as powerful and worthy of respect, but still fundamentally disgusting. Something that deals with her feeling under the heel of what she'd otherwise consider vermin. I don't think that's actually how she views Taylor, but it'd be a neat spin on her character.

This Moment In Particular Is Super Special To Me, Out Of All Of Worm. Is The Starkest Window Into Her

This moment in particular is super special to me, out of all of worm. Is the starkest window into her inner world, this is probably the first and only time where she actually expresses out loud to another person the fact that she actually took some pride in being a bad ass supervillain, where she actually gloated about being "bad". She was aware of how deranged she was and she actually liked it a little.

This is a taylor we almost never get to see

NGL gang when I read Worm I was surprised how ultimately understandable Amy's actions were.

Keep in mind I haven't read Ward yet so I don't know all of it but in Worm Amy is clearly shown to have not been hardened enough to handle the high stakes situations that parahumans deal with everyday (y'know like a normal person) and parahumans are known to have their powers pop off without them wanting it. As well as how she was later being deliberately pushed by people who's probably some of the best non-master manipulators.

What I had heard was a repressed and predatory lesbian brainwashing and raping her sister. What I read was a frightened woman pulled too thin to think, being human, and failing because of that.

Is it just me or does she give off Harry Du Bois vibes?

Having an extremely specific problem after trying a traditional pencil crayon look for an older Tattletale portrait. Somehow, during the slow work from grubby sketch to rendering, she became way too hot. And said traditional art style means I can’t change this with regular digital tools, I have to redraw sections of her face entirely.

That I did with optical colour mixing using hatching and a limited palette.

Do I roll with hot Tattletale or do I suffer?

Jack Slash works as well as he does basically entirely on the basis of how visibly the author Does Not Like Him. There's a version of Jack Slash written by some other guy who actually unironically thinks his character archetype is hot shit, and that version sucks and the version of the story that he's in also probably sucks. This version also sucks but you can feel everyone else in the story rolling their eyes in unison at the fact that they've gotta put up with his bullshit, everyone going, "alright, can we please stop with the Dark Knight pastiche and go back to playing realpolitik with well-realized individuals who aren't homicidal cartoon characters that we're forced to take seriously purely by virtue of their inexplicable six-digit grimdark looneytunes bodycount"

I believe you but this is insane to me because it’s explicitly a small village, the sort of place that the left is meant to view as a socially conservative backwater. That it’s not being presented negatively, by default in fixing it, is honestly kinda worrying re the state of the left

It says something that every single attempt to "fix" the cute witch in the alps game concept makes something that is vastly, vastly worse than the original idea, and sometimes is more actually fascist.

Mostly it's that the thing the Disco Elysium writers were going for is much harder than it looks from the outside. But also other things.

In relation to this, of the three great failures of his that Lux lists in issue 1 - the Signal, the Second Summer of Love, and Tokyo - all are extra-dimensional or extraterrestrial. The Signal is an alien gestalt, the Queen arrived “from outside existence” and while Tokyo is the fault of Masumi, an atomic, her power is to control and summon an extra-dimensional creature that exists independently of her.

All the great problems, thus far, have been caused by out of pocket bullshit

Uniquely for superhero deconstructions, The Power Fantasy is largely in conversation first-and-foremost with X-Men rather than bog-standard targets of critique such as Superman and Batman; this is apparent both in the centrality of a millions-strong demographic of post-atomic-bomb superhumans as well as the interpersonal and ideological conflict between Ray "Heavy" Harris (analogous to Magneto) and Etienne Lux (analogous to Professor X.)

One underdiscussed element of how The Power Fantasy approaches the X-Men canon is that in addition to the mutant analogues of The Atomics and The Nuclear Family, the setting's worldbuilding also incorporates religious cosmology and functional magic; three of the six Superpowers in the main cast derive their power from divine intervention or accrued wizardly power, rather than whatever capepunk-standard unified power schema governs the Atomics. This reflects a truth of the X-men canon largely suppressed within the Fox Film canon- namely the absurd amount of time that the X-Men spend having to sideline the mutant metaphor in order to slap down Dracula or space aliens or wizards or Literal Demons from Hell or some such similar out of pocket bullshit
