Eugenie Clark

There was a great post in my FB stream on Eugenie Clark-- a marine biologist who was an advocate for sharks and science.  I can remember reading her biography “Shark Lady” in 2nd grade, not only was it the book that got me fascinated by sharks but also inspired me to think maybe one day I could be a scientist too.

Nat Geo had a great article on Eugenie back in February:  'Shark Lady' Eugenie Clark, Famed Marine Biologist, Has Died

We are all cyborgs now
Technology is evolving us, says Amber Case, as we become a screen-staring, button-clicking new version of homo sapiens. We now rely on "external brains" (cell phones and computers) to communicate, remember, even live out secondary lives. But will these machines ultimately connect or conquer us? Case offers surprising insight into our cyborg selves.

According to the Coalition for the Homeless, during Bloomberg’s twelve years in office the number of homeless families in New York went up by seventy-three per cent. One child out of every hundred children in the city is homeless. For baseball games, Yankee Stadium seats 50,287. If all the homeless people who now live in New York used the stadium for a gathering, several thousand of them would have to stand. There are now two hundred and thirty-six homeless shelters in the city.

Creating a Better Filing System

I found a great article on the Wirecutter about organizing your digital files, here's an overview:

-How long will it take-

It depends on how many files you have, a day to a week.

-Have a plan-

Start with categories, once everything is filed, file them into sub categories.

Keep in mind to use the same file structure (all singular or plural names, all caps or lowercase). It might be helpful to plot out the folder structure on paper.

-Use specific folders: resources, in progress, final, scrap-

Create a main folder called "Projects" and in that folder create subfolders called "Resources," "In Progress," "Final," and "Scrap" to use for the files you create during the process. Also use filenames like "01," "02," "03," etc in folders and files.

-For photos use: year > month > people > event

Using this structure for your folder allows you to sort by year and search by term: by month, person, or event.

-Pin folders to sidebar-

If you are working on a project or frequently accessing a specific folder or you need a folder with a long file path, you can drag the folder over to "Quick Access" on the left sidebar.

-Include descriptive file name and keywords-

Keywords will make files searchable by those terms.

Head over to the Wirecutter for their article on How to Organize Your Digital Files to get more details and examples.
