‘The heart once so full of love and equity dishevelled in his chest as he felt the blood reach his feet…“Jane” he muttered under his breath. Not that there was such a thing left in his lungs. “Jane” he repeated as his eyes filled with sorrow, his face was wet with agony. “Lo’ 

A hand took Poe’s from the keyboard of his typewriter. Without turning around he knew who it was. The sticky -probably from hard sweets- fingers that grabbed his wrist, they looked so small compared to his that were long and boney.

“Good evening, Dear Ranpo” he felt Karl jump off his shoulders as a different body rested on them. Ranpo’s arms wrapped around his neck, his head leaning off to the side just enough to be able to see each other.

“So~ How’s the new novel going~?” Ranpo coos, unable to stop the excitement of getting a new novel to sit through. The last one took him totally by surprise as he’d actually had three guesses for the ending and not even one was correct! He couldn’t believe how good Poe’s writing has gotten.

“Oh this is actually a personal story, it’s a gothic romance where the lead; Jacob, gets married to his girlfriend of a year not realising she still has some secrets he’s never been told.” he stops talking about the story when he sees Ranpo smiling at him almost mockingly because of how lovingly he speaks of his work. 

“You’re right, it’s not at all my thing but can I read the first page? Since I’m guessing you haven’t finished” Poe nods, looking through his well organised filing cabinet. He takes the page out and hands it to Ranpo with a softly-embarrassed smile.

He waits patiently for Ranpo to read through it though it only takes the first few lines for him to burst into laughter. Was his writing that bad? Surely not, his gothic romance novels that he published under a pen name did much better than any other works, though still all of them were very popular especially back in the US.

“So- this gorgeous girl named Jane has, hair the ‘black of a raven's feather, tapering at her nape’ with ‘Lunar green eyes, with a fade of olivine reflected by the light when not hidden behind her thick glasses.’ She’s also around 5’5’’ and has a beautiful smile?” He starts laughing more, he can’t believe this is what Poe imagines when he writes this story. He sees Poe’s face turn red, or at least the part of his face that isn’t covered by his hair.

“So- your mysterious lovely girlfriend in this book is just- me?” he asks teasingly, placing the page on Poe’s desk. 

“I hadn’t realised…” he mumbled, it was an obvious lie, and Ranpo well but knew this. Soon Ranpo’s hands wrapped around Poe again, hugging him. He continued to softly giggle as he looked up at Poe’s embarrassed face.

“So you know the specific hues of my eyes?” He asks, opening his eyes fully to tease Poe even more.

Poe brings a hand to Ranpo’s cheek, running a thumb under his eye. They were as beautiful as always, even in his candle lit office, they glimmered so beautifully. He didn’t realise how long he was looking until Ranpo placed his hand on top of Poe’s, his pretty eyes looking away as a soft blush grew to his usually uncoloured cheeks.

Poe quickly withdrew his hand, turning back to his desk and taking the unfinished page from his typewriter and the page he gave to Ranpo, taking them back to their correct places. He follows by starting to cap all the inks he has open and cleaning up his desk.

Ranpo felt sad as soon as Poe started walking around and ignoring him. It wasn’t normal, even if he was flustered. They’d always been close! Physically and emotionally, and just..this? This one small thing made him so disheartened. He grabbed Poe’s wrist, making sure he didn't walk away. 

“Ed. Why’re you so quiet, what’s wrong?” Ranpo asks with a serious tone, it’s so unusual to hear him so serious that Poe actually turns around, concerned. 

“I…” He starts voice quivering. He sits down on the chair, unable to look at Ranpo even through his fringe.

‘ “ I’m sorry I had to do it, Diana Ranpo, I couldn’t hold back the way my heart jabbed the thorns deeper at your sight. It had made me insane, your every second shared with me could not change anything within me. The knife I hold to my brain shall pierce all my mistakes, even when you forgive me” ’

The latest book he’d written, the mystery novel Ranpo couldn’t solve, it was insane that the murderer was the one man that had seemed perfect! He was the one that murdered the parents of his wife, he had to though! And he couldn’t believe that the wife wouldn’t believe him or forgive him and he killed himself as well because he loved her and couldn’t forgive himself for her heartbreak? How could she be so selfish if she loved him! 

Then it clicked he said the line with his name because he…

“Edgar…” he mumbled softly. The reason he couldn’t solve it was because it had been love as the drive. Not logic behind the kills but love, and the morals weren’t sound either.

He grabbed one of the quills off Poe’s desk, bringing it to his head. 

‘ The knife quill rested just above his ear, tracing it down to his temple as it slowly started to press into his skin. He cries out in pain as a hand reaches for it…A pair of lips rest on his as the view blacks out with a headache. ’ 

The ink flows down to his jaw, eyes widening as the taste of artificial strawberry linger on his lips. The pens’ discarded on the desk as he hears the soft clack of it being placed down.

“You…Poe…I love you too” Ranpo says through jittery stutters. 

Poe places his hands on Ranpo’s shoulders as he stands up. He shoves Ranpo forward into himself, wrapping his arms around his waist as he stares off into the distance. Karl looks at Poe with what seems like a happy smile and as he pulls away from the hug to look back at Ranpo, he feels a hand move his fringe to look better at his face.

“Are you…crying?” Ranpo says with a chuckle, wiping the tears Poe didn’t realise had started.

“You feel the same?” he asks in a barely audible whisper, his voice losing itself in disbelief and relief. Ranpo nodded, he knew he’d have to give Poe a second, but he stood there until the boy was finished crying and finally being able to speak properly.

“So. How about a date at the café we were meant to go to?” Poe nods excitedly followed by a chorus of ‘Yes’ and ‘Of Course’. 

“I do have to go now though since it’s getting late, so, see ya tomorrow, Ed!” He waves as he walks out of the office, and the front door, putting the spare key back under his doormat before shutting the door.
