You have to remember at the end of that war the US, UK, and USSR were “Allies”. They divvied up the land that Germany had conquered, and the US & UK gave Russia “temporary control” of the eastern half of Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. Russia put in their own puppets and controlled all of them for 45 years.

I don’t think the West underestimated Russia or Stalin. They just thought they could live with them. Japan was beaten. One of the reasons the US dropped the atomic bombs on Japan anyway was to demonstrate to Russia that they possessed them. They were wrong that Russia could be contained, and in ‘49 Russia exploded their own bomb (courtesy of spies inside the US atomic program). They will never, ever, EVER stop pushing and trying to regain their Soviet “empire”. That’s why Ukraine MUST win.

it feels so insane that a lot of people in soviet union had parallel russian names they used instead of their own non-slavic names. we were just living like that
