I think something abt luffy that makes him so enchanting is that he's introduced as being very silly and goofy, and you kind of expect him to be humbled or experience the harsh reality of what being a pirate actually means (cruelty, theft, actually being a bad person etc.) and have to adjust his world view, but then fucked up things start happening and he's still silly and goofy about it and you find that he actually wasn't sheltered at all and he is just a little fucked up himself, but still happy and loving
and then its Everyone Else who has to adjust to what his idea of a pirate is bc he keeps winning and they're just like "yeah okay. whatever. I guess thats what this is in now."
i feel like fandom would really benefit from adopting the idea of readings, as in interpretations. anyone can interpret canon as saying anything on even the most tenuous of justifications. if you interpret a detail or moment in a particular way, great! but if someone interprets that thing in another way, even in a way which directly contradicts your interpretation, that’s also okay. multiple readings can exist at once without invalidating any of them
a lot of fandom drama seems to arise from people acting as if their interpretations are True or Factual in some way, when really all anyone can do is speak to their own interpretations & experiences. which is natural! and good! many voices with many interpretations and approaches is healthy and good. the trouble is depicting a reading, which is a very personal thing, as universally true, and then getting frustrated that others don’t interpret events the same way. & i get it, that can be annoying, especially if you think those other interpretations are misunderstanding the canon. but so much of the time it’s just a different reading, taking into account details you might not have noticed or maybe just viewing them in a different light, informed by different life experiences & values & everything else that goes into a personal interpretation of a creative work
by trying to depict One Single Reading of a text as Correct, fandom loses all the nuance of interpretation & also just turns everyone into a bunch of rabid raccoons fighting over different ways to look through the same kaleidoscope
honestly we used to have hard rock but now all we have is metal. what happened
watching death note with my family and after the college entrance episode my mom asked offhandedly if anyone had ever pictured L and light as a couple before. it felt like one single white dove had landed on a crystalline lake in a beautiful pure clearing. no i dont think anyones ever thought of that before
Firm believer that since Luffy crashed into Zoro's life he refuses to enter it any other way now
saw a one piece live action character impressions post that pegged luffy as having daddy issues which is hilarious to me because luffy has, like, the opposite of daddy issues. he has daddy solutions. if you hang out with luffy long enough, your father-related angst starts to resolve. this has happened to multiple characters.
I know this is talked about a lot but still,
Luffy being the only one who can make Zoro laugh and smile like this means so much to me </3
"it's all in your head" correct! unfortunately I am also in there
zoro’s isolation has always been such a huge point of interest for me, specifically how it inspired his dynamic with luffy and the strawhats.
we don’t know much about zoro’s history as far as strawhat pasts go. however, regardless of if he gets a 200 episode whole cake island arc or we learn nothing at all from this day on, the fact remains that kuina is the person in his life who had the largest impact on him. kuina is his brightest memory and for a long time, felt like maybe the only significant one he had.
zoro, before the strawhats, always felt eerily quiet to me.
luffy, in countless ways, is his saviour. he saved him from his captors, from bullets as he was tied to a cross. they both save each other as much as they breathe. but i think it’s as fundamental as luffy was probably the first person who ever outright looked for and wanted zoro’s company long term, at least in many years.
luffy wanted zoro, luffy saved zoro by giving him something as simple as an anchor, which is himself. he alleviated a decade long aimlessness. ironically, i don’t think it’s inaccurate to say that zoro was lost before the strawhats.
zoro’s protectiveness and devotion have always made such sad sense to me because i would protect the only thing in the world that is truly mine with teeth and claw too. the strawhats are everything to zoro, literally. his constant training to be strong, him laying down his head for luffy’s life, it all makes sense to begin with but it aches even more with the loneliness that encompasses his whole character.
what is zoro’s life without luffy? without the strawhats? it is probably as simple as that to him. he betrayed his lifestyle and became a pirate with the attitude of what the hell, sure, and finally, finally has something to protect, something to lose and not let go. zoro’s isolation is bone-deep, it is years long. i don’t know if anything could shake me from the person who saved me from that, and i would understand if he was the same.
