freaky fungi fact - mycology vocab :-)

deliquescence : the process of certain fungi (most often ink caps) where they turn to liquid.

this process is observed in a handful of different fungi !! as their caps mature, they furl inward & turn to a spore-filled, inky liquid.

yes, this liquid can be harvested & used for actual pen ink. :-) just make sure to add preservatives to avoid it causing a rotten smell.

to use it in a sentence : the mushrooms above are experiencing deliquescence ; they are deliquescing !! ink caps are deliquescent.

can I just-

And honestly, if the experience feels overwhelming or is making you miserable, just log off for a few days…take a deep breathe, go outside, bathe in the sun or sit under a tree… but follow and engage with others who make this joyful for you (that’s the whole point here!)

FOTD #076 : smooth cage fungus! (ileodictyon gracile)

the smooth cage fungus is a saprotrophic fungus in the family phallaceae. it is native to australia, but has also been found in china, japan, india, south korea, england, italy, portugal & spain.

the big question : can i bite it?? the edibility is unconfirmed - but the putrid smell will steer you away !!

"the smooth cage fungus's basidiocarps (fruit bodies), are shaped like a ball with interlaced or latticed branches. it is a whitish, mesh ball."
