polites sits on the bank of the styx. having just recently entered the underworld, eurylochus spots him from a short distance. his eyes widen. polites notices him. then he smiles, weakly.

polities:…welcome back, my friend.

here’s something to consider:

sit with me by the river…?

a pause. eurylochus is frozen. polites’ brows furrow in concern.

polities: are you there, my friend?

eurylochus:…polites…

polites: have you lost all your pity

that you simply can’t sit with me? 

eurylochus takes a long moment of hesitance, before undoubtedly relenting. he lets out a heavy sigh and treads over to sit by polites. after that, the two sit on silence for a moment.

polites: i’ve been waiting by the river banks

for at least 2 or 3 years

you, like i, would think time goes by quick

but, now i know, i fear:

we’ve got a century left to spend

and yet one thing rings true:

i love every single soul in our fleet

but i’ve been waiting to meet with you

tears bead in eurylochus’ eyes, and he can’t help but stare at his dear, deceased friend. polites stares back, with a hint of sadness, and yet, relief in his gaze.

polites: my friend…

i don’t blame you for forgetting to use open arms

i know that the world is cruel to those with hearts

and i know, that i can’t do much, but it’s a start:

polites holds his arms open towards eurylochus, a request. silence, with only the flowing of the styx and the soft wailing of souls to accompany it. eurylochus’s expression crumbles, and he leans into polites’ hug. the hug isn’t reciprocated on eurylochus’ part, but polites doesn’t mind. he knows the man is tired, so he lets him rest.
