guys commenting part two without reblogging is really not the compliment you think it is haha
tw (đ°) mentions of murder, violence, age gap (2 years, your 20!!) fluff 𼺠super cute Kei in some points. mentions of kids <3 fem!reader !!! Manipulation .
đ: âWhatâs up, hot stuff?â Spoke the honeyed voice of Tsukishima Kei, in other words, your boyfriend.
He may seem like the big bad Tsukishima, but letâs be honest. Heâs absolutely enchanted by you! Honestly, he may seem like the âbad guyâ but only to everybody else! He adores you, thatâs final. <3
Heâs the overprotective type, toxic, obsessive. But in some points - more than most - he is a worshipper. Kei gets so much pleasure from watching you have a good time doing anything. Tsukki wants you to use him, in anyway,
His pet names can go from: hot stuff, baby, babe and in private: goddess.
He gloats to you to literally everybody. You read a book? Be prepared for everybody to know, you could literally kill somebody and heâd still think you were the cutest thing ever.
Kei does take it into his own hands to get rid of the parasites that hurt you. Hurt you basically means they donât think youâre interesting, good looking basically if they say âbad stuffâ (in his words.) that could possibly offend you if you ever were to find out.
Tsukishima will sadly manipulate you just a little bit out of going outside! Itâs all for your own good. Probably.. but at least you can go out at Christmas and your Birthday! He took you to Disney even though it was probably the most expensive thing heâs ever done.
It was all worth it for those giggles, smiles, happy teary eyes and everything else. He of course gets you a cute little pink headband, with sparkles, as well as a cupcake of your choice.
Tsukki is willing to wait hours just for fast passes! If it means youâre happy, heâd do anything, honestly. No is a word heâs never said to you, unless it can hurt you. But even then he gets you a present just to make you feel better. <3
Thank you for reading! This is my first post here!! Iâm glad I started off with my comfort character 𼺠if you have a request please send it in! I do everything but smut! I prefer comfort requests (sad stuff, sappy, starts and everything else!) but please do share your thoughts about any fic youâd love to see!
Thanks !! đđ

You tried not to fidget or appear nervous as you waited in the empty conference room in the East Wing of the Den. You still marveled at the fact that one side of the home was an upscale bachelor pad with all the amenities of a luxury apartment complex under one roof, while the other side held the sterile and professional atmosphere of an office building.Â
You gave yourself a moment to take in the architecture of the room; there were three tall windows on the wall across from you, giving you a view of the manicured lawn and what looked to be a rose garden on the far left of the grounds. The walls were painted a deep blue, which gave an atmosphere of professionalism and restraint. The long, walnut-colored conference table was surrounded by black, straight-backed office chairs, and one of the far walls had what looked to be a roll-up projector screen.Â
You passed some time imagining what kind of presentations a gang had any business doing in a conference room, amused by the thought of RM making powerpoint presentations for their organized crime. You wondered if RM likes his bar graphs in neutrals or earth tones.Â
You adjusted your blouse to make sure it was falling perfectly and saw that the knuckles on your right hand were already showing faint signs of bruising.Â
You knew you were too rough this morning.Â
RM wasnât able to meet until noon, so Jungkook insisted you started your morning on the West side of the Den, training with him in the private gym. In the past week and a half since Nox, a notorious smuggler and newly initiated member of the Black Tips followed you through the alleyways of the 7th Ward, Jungkook has been adamant about your protection. Proudly informing you, it was his duty to oversee your safety and surveillance, and that included your ability to defend yourself.Â

đ¤ MASTERLIST đ¤
Warnings: mentions of divorce, readerâs clothing described, use of âbig brotherâ and âlittle sisterâ, little to no suggestion because we are not there yet
Word Count: 1.5k
Note: pink dividers by @/adornedwithlight! chapters will be longer after this one. Consider this a little introduction. Also, Iâve been asked to start a taglist, so let me know if you want in on that <3
Youâre seventeen when your parents get divorced and eighteen when they remarry within two months of each other. Your dad bags a lady whoâs closer to your age than his, and your mother finds herself a man who loves living in luxury as well as in debt from his uncontrollable gambling addiction.
It causes your relationships with your parentsâall four of them nowâto grow tense, causes you to slam doors and spit curses and cover your ears with expensive headphones (courtesy of the stepfather trying to win your affections).
The only, only good thing about your dysfunctional family dynamic is your new step brother, Toma, who you donât actually see very much, but whatever. Youâd been an only child your entire life, lived with a very specific type of loneliness that is impossible to describe, and now suddenly you have an older brother. Itâs weird, but thereâs an unspoken solidarity between the two of you right off the bat. The marriage between your mom and his dad is absolutely fucked from the start; you know it, and Toma knows it. Just like you both know youâll be the ones thatâll have to deal with the inevitable fallout.
Every week you pick who you want to stay with, the lesser of 2 evils entirely based on your mood. Do you stay with your father and his irritating wife who only knows how to bond through mani-pedis? Or do you brave the big house full of fake smiles, embellished anecdotes, and late night arguments that echo through the halls?
Usually, itâs the latter that wins out. At least you can seclude yourself in your room there and no one will pester you to go shopping or get your hair done. (The new wife means well, you know deep down. Sheâs just so fucking annoying.)
Staying with your mom and stepdad also gives you the chance to maybe see Toma if heâs not on tour, at practice, or giving guitar lessons at the nearby music store.
Heâs kind of intense, deep frown permanently etched onto his face, popping pills like candy. Usually dressed in perfectly tattered T-shirts and leather pants, his hair is bleached and spiked, one of his eyebrows is piercedâlooks like he plays guitar in a metal band.
Which he does.
He isnât your best friend. Youâd barely call him an acquaintance. But every once in a while, you find yourself alone with him in the kitchen or the den. He asks simple questions to make shitty small talk, but it eventually leads you to ask about his band, which always ends in the two of you sharing opinions on music, newly dropped albums, etc.
Itâs about the closest you ever get to bonding those first couple years, but itâs good enough for you, makes you feel like youâre not totally alone in the household.
The first time you find a burnt CD on your nightstand happens the same night that Toma sticks up for you at the dinner table. Heâs been off tour for a couple weeks, and despite still not knowing him super well, you can tell that the stagnancy is making him cagey.
So, when your stepdad makes an offhand comment about your aestheticâthe skirts and fishnets and combat boots, it doesnât go over well.
âAll that black isnât exactly inviting, sweetheart. You wonât find a man leaving the house looking like youâre ready to beat someone up.â
Youâre used to it by now, spent most of your adolescence listening to your mom and dad bitching about the hair you let cover your face and the gory graphics on your T-shirts. This isnât anything new to you.
HoweverâŚ
âWhy the hell would you even say something like that?â Toma gruffs, fork gripped just a little too tightly in his hand. âThe way she dresses ainât got nothinâ to do with you, so shut your trap about it.â
âTomaââ your stepdad tries to defend.
âNo. And why are you so concerned about her looking inviting? What the fuck does that even mean? You tryinâ to marry her off or somethinâ?â
All your stepdad can do is get red in the face and grumble an apology, obviously out of his depth.
âYeah, thatâs what I thought. Keep your shit opinions to yourself, old man.â
You flash Toma a weak but grateful smile, nods in return, and thatâs that.
Itâs only when youâre winding down for the night that you spot it, the clear case and the bright blue disc within. His handwriting is surprisingly legible, all caps spelling out PLAYLIST #1 followed by each track in smaller print.
Youâre only a little nervous when you knock on Tomaâs bedroom door. Youâve never been inside before, all the way at the end of the hallway with the door perpetually shut. Your step brother doesnât intimidate you, exactly, you just donât have the best read on him yet.
When Toma opens the door, heâs the most dressed down youâve ever seen him, wearing a t-shirt full of holes and a pair of black sweatpants. His hair is down and damp, barefoot as he steps to the side, and the chain he never seems to take off is missing from around his neck.
Itâs strange seeing him like this: no tough guy exterior, just a dude in his early twenties living with his parents.
Thatâs not to say you look like youâre ready to hit the town. Sporting an oversized Hello Kitty shirt and little pajama shorts, you were ready to crawl into bed before you found the CD. The difference here is that while youâre taken off guard by Tomaâs relaxed appearance, he doesnât even seem to notice yours. And why would he?
You hold up the disc with a raised eyebrow, âa gift?â
Toma shrugs, lifting his arm high enough to let you walk under it and into his room, shutting the door behind you. Around any other guy, an action like that would have made your stomach flip in anticipation, but not this time. Definitely not this time.
âA few of âem are from bands weâve toured with, but most of it is just shit Iâm into that I think you might like.â
All you can reply with is a lame, âcool, cool,â too distracted with glancing around his room.
âIâm guessinâ you havenât listened to it yet?â
You shake your head, eyes landing back on him as he sits at an old desk, a guitar laid out in front of him. From the looks of it, heâs restringing it.
âNot yet. Saw it and just⌠came to say thanks, I guess.â
He nods toward the stereo system up against one of the walls and tells you, âpop it in, then. I can give you my, uh, expert commentary.â
âWow, lucky me,â you joke, ejecting the disc thatâs already in the player to replace it with yours. You hope your dry tone is enough to cover up the buzz of excitement you feel at the prospect of getting to know him a little better.
For the next hour, you halfway listen to the tracks, more interested in what Toma has to say about each of them. Some of his âcommentaryâ is about the musicality of each song, but he also tells you about how he stumbled upon the the more underground bands and what it was like to play with the ones he toured with.
You use this as an opportunity to explore his space, or the space he allows you to see. Youâre not snooping in his closet or anything, but you arenât subtle as you look over the bulletin board full of tickets and peruse his little bookshelfâmusic theory, some biographies, a couple of psychology books (one about gambling).
When you pick up a model motorcycle from a shelf, Toma snorts, mutters, âyou really are a little sister, arenât yaâ?â
âHuh?â you put the little bike down and turn to him. âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean rifling through my shit is a little sister thing to do.â
âIâm not rifling through anything,â you tell him, sucking your teeth, âârifling would be if I was, like, going through drawers or something. I am simply⌠cataloging.â
He snickers, shrugging broad shoulders, and for some reason you feel the need to add, âIâm not actually that much younger, yaâ know.â
âThree years.â
âTwo and a half,â you immediately correct, which, granted, is a little childish, but you canât help yourself. The last thing you want is for Toma to see you as a baby as someone he has nothing in common with, someone heâd be embarrassed to introduce his friends to.
âFine,â he concedes, a little smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth, âtwo and a half.â
You shouldnât care what he thinks or how he perceives you. It doesnât matter. He only just recently entered your lifeâa new, hastily written chapter in an eighteen-year-long story.
Thereâs a part of you, though, bigger than youâd like to admit, that desperately wants him to like you, to approve of youâjust a little sisterâs desire to be loved by her big brother.

Series Summary: You and Jungkook have been friends for a decade. And while heâs the charming and dependable, often reserved boy-next-door, heâs also just been a friend - a constant in your life, a part of a whole, and someone whoâs seen all the flawed and probably unattractive sides of you.
A resumption of your friend groupâs out-of-town trips has caused you to spend more time with him. And somewhere in between the morning coffee in the forest, running around in the snow, and watching the sunset on a boat, heâs become something more. And youâre not quite sure how to deal with it.
đś:Â Beautiful Soul by Jesse McCartney || Yes or No by Jungkook
Spending the holidays in Busan brings about unparalleled comfort, as Jungkook fills his days with video games, hangouts with Jimin in their favorite spots, riding his motorcycle, and home cooked meals.Â
Whenever heâs at home, he feels like a child where he does whatever he wants and where heâs doted on by his parents, which he canât really argue with as an adult.
It grounds him somehow. It reminds him of how he felt growing up - wanting to be valued and taken care of but also being trusted and respected. He knows that his students feel the same way as middle and high school kids who are just starting to figure things out. Itâs always a good start to his year, and it gives him clarity and that sense of direction.
Thatâs probably the only good thing about being home this year because other than that, heâs reminded of his physical distance from you, the time youâre not spending together, and the conversations and banter youâre not having.Â
Youâre back in your hometown, too, and he knows that the holidays with your relatives is your favorite thing in the world. Youâve always been close with your cousins, as most of you spent your childhood at your grandparentsâ farm. Only you and Hayoung are based in Seoul so itâs a celebration every time you visit. Itâs busy times, too, as you spend the days playing with your nieces and nephews and driving around the surrounding towns.
Jungkook knows this, so he looks forward to your or Hayoungâs messages in the group chat, which would usually just be photos or a funny story or a little accident that involves you. Itâs the only time he actually reads the messages and that itself is an indication that he misses you terribly, much more than he expected he would.
The Sapporo trip suddenly feels like a lifetime ago. He spent everyday with you - seeing you in the morning, teasing you throughout the day, being in your little bubble of weirdness, talking about serious and mundane things, and falling asleep to your adorable soft snoring.Â
He thought that spending it how he did was his way of settling into his feelings for you - just feeling it, trying to figure it out or understand it. He still doesnât know how he got here, even if he could point to some moments where things started to change.Â
Perhaps heâs only thinking about it as much as he is because you donât think that could just happen to you - that you could just one day feel differently about a person youâve known for years. You feel intensely, instantaneously, and he supposes if you were ever to like him, you wouldâve done so a long time ago but that ship never sailed and heâs unsure if it ever will.
That still doesnât stop him from thinking about you though. He sees your photos and reads your sometimes short and sometimes long narrations of what youâre doing and he imagines your pouty face or constant complaints and it makes him smile.Â
He thinks of teasing you about stubbing your toe or getting followed by bugs or your slow walking and that makes him feel giddy, too. Even the thought of you talking about current events and the pervasiveness of patriarchy in every aspect of social life is something he seeks.Â
And then there are the puppy eyes and sweet smile when you want something that makes him want to just give it all to you. But thereâs also the affection - your hugs, your playful smacking, your shoulder leaning, and the occasional hand on top of his that makes his heart take a leap just reminiscing about it.Â
He feels a little silly, as heâs perhaps had hundreds of those moments with you in the past but heâs never thought much about them until recently. Until after your trip to Chungbuk, if heâs being specific.Â
And now he replays them in his head over and over again just because he wants more, even if heâs the one whoâs not texting nor replying, and heâs slowly losing his mind.
Itâs been two weeks and other than your messages to the group, both of you havenât spoken. He knows youâre busy and heâs the one with spare time. He could easily reach out to you and youâll probably reply, but given all this yearning, heâs nervous heâll overdo it, that heâll say or do something out of the ordinary and youâll see right through him. Â
Itâs the day of his trip back to Seoul. He and Jimin will drive out in the afternoon and theyâre spending their last few hours in his living room, just playing games after a morning of riding his bike around town.Â
His best friendâs phone rings and he puts the call on speaker while trying to score a goal in a game of FIFA.Â
âJiminie!â your voice cuts through the crowd cheering sound effect. âHowâs my annoying best friend doing without me?â
The surprise from hearing you causes Jungkookâs mind to go blank. It leaves Jimin free near the net and he scores a point.Â
âFinally!â Jimin yells. âDid you see that, Kook? You sucked and I kicked a goal.â
Jungkook waves him off, his pride not too hurt because only he knows his momentary lapse was because of you and not for his lack of skills.
âYouâre with Kook?!â You chirp.
âYeah, weâre playing video games in his house,â Jimin replies.
âKook! How are you?! I miss you!â You shriek. âI didnât know if you were alive because you werenât reacting to my messages in the group chat. Did you know that I almost slipped into a gutter? And that we went hiking with my cousins and I slid down my butt?â
âHe knows because I told him,â Jimin says. âItâs not like he reads messages.â
âHey, I do,â Jungkook corrects. He really does though, very rarely. Recently, all the time when itâs from you. âYou also rode an ATV and got stuck in the mud.â
âSo you read my messages! Why didnât you reply then!â You whine.Â
âItâs pointless to laugh at you if you canât hear or see me,â he reasons. âBut yes, I saw them. Everyone was posting about how their holidays were going so I read through them.â
âWell, you wouldâve laughed hard if you saw me.â
âAnd then you wouldâve smacked me for doing so,â Jungkook points out.
âThat is very true. Then you wouldâve scolded me but then proceeded to treat my wounds,â you giggle. âAs expected. Anyway, what have you bums been up to?â
âWhat do bums do, ___?â Jimin replies after making a defensive play. âWe literally just eat and play and ride around when weâre home. And itâs been perfect.â
âSucks Iâm not there to piss you off though,â you say.
âRight? This is what peaceful living is like,â your best friend responds. âBut Iâm gonna deal with your annoying ass soon so let me savor this.â
âYou better,â you hum. âDid you get enough rest, Kook?â
âLots of it actually,â he half lies. He spent much of these two weeks agonizing over being away from you. âBut I guess Iâm ready to get back to work. Iâll start coaching the taekwondo team next week.â
âAlready? Isnât it still the winter break?â You wonder.
âTraining starts early because of the competition in March,â he answers.
âOoh, new kids to cheer for?â you excitedly ask.Â
âIf youâre free on Wednesdays and Saturdays, sure,â Jungkook says. âBut no pressure, ___.â
âIâll make time,â you promise him.Â
âOkay, then,â he hums, doing his best to keep his smile from forming over the thought of spending time with you again.
âAnyway, I just wanted to check up on my friends. Gonna go play with the kids at the park now,â you say. âCareful when you drive to the city! See you guys soon!â
âMiss you! Iâm going to your place right when you get back!â Jimin sneaks in.
âDonât hurt yourself!â Jungkook adds, and you respond to him in laughter, a sound he definitely misses.
Jimin drops the call and shifts his full focus on the game.
âWell, she sounds jolly. Glad she got her joy back,â Jimin comments. âI remember last year, I begged her to take a longer leave and spend another week with her family so she could deal with her burnout.â
âDid she stay?â
âNo. She said sheâd be more stressed with all the backlog.â
âHowâd she get through that, by the way?â Jungkook asks, immediately being reminded of how uninvolved he was at certain points in your life.
âMo-eum and I convinced her to talk to her manager and apparently others were feeling it, too, so there was a restructure that happened and it helped with her workload,â Jimin explains. âBut she would also take her leaves because she barely did, and she tried her best to switch off once she clocked out and that also helped a lot. She didnât talk about work when we were in Japan, didnât she?â
âNope, which is good. At least she got the help she needed,â Jungkook hums, content that even if he didnât know the extent of your stress that time, you were able to deal with it properly.Â
As an educator, he knows enough about burnout, especially when he has to deal with his studentsâ problems on top of just teaching them. Heâs always tried to manage his emotions and compartmentalize. Working out and going back to playing the sports he loves helped him tremendously with that.Â
âYeah, she did. But sheâs doing so much better now and I guess having Tae back and doing our trips again lifted her spirits even more. Like, she gets to take actual breaks and be around us,â Jimin shares. âI guess watching your studentsâ matches gave her something new to do, too. She really enjoyed that.â
âShe did,â Jungkook smiles, realizing now how those afternoons of you cheering for his team was also beneficial for you. âAnd well, thereâll be other matches for her to watch.â
âYeah, it should be fun,â Jimin nods. âAnyway, one more game. Iâm beating you this time.â
Jungkook drops Jimin off at his place and spends the drive to his apartment thinking of you again. He knows that even with your ability to express yourself, there are some things you donât share with everyone. There were times when you were open to him about your thoughts and feelings though, and he takes them as a sign of your feeling of comfort around him and of your trust.
He looks back at the instances where youâd thanked him for making you feel good about yourself, and while he thought it was a natural thing for him to do that, he realizes it probably meant more to you than he expected. He hopes he continues to make you feel at ease around him, as he realizes that thatâs what he feels when heâs with you.Â
Thereâs assurance and trust that you understand him. Thereâs comfort in your words no matter how playful or cheeky they are. Thereâs that affection over the things he does and his fondness over the things you do. And then thereâs that desire to take care of you, to make you feel comforted and understood just the same.Â
He takes a deep breath before he exits his car. Two weeks of being away from you and heâs settled into his feelings. He knows theyâre not fleeting. He also knows theyâre not just because he wants to be a better friend to you.Â
As he checks his phone and sees a message from you in the group chat asking him and Jimin if they got home safely and tagging him to reply, Jungkook thinks that now is when he starts wanting more.Â
And heâs not exactly sure how to go about it. Or if itâs a feeling youâll even reciprocate.
Itâs been three weeks since Jungkook returned to Seoul and two weeks since you did. You apparently had to use up your remaining leaves until mid-January so you decided to stay in Gwangju for a few more days. He knew that because he sent you a message after you announced it in the group chat, and youâve sort of been texting each other since then. Itâs not an all-day nor daily type of thing but itâs much better than not hearing from you at all.Â
He told you that he got assigned to accompany the high school table tennis team to a competition in Sokcho for a few days after one of their assistant coaches got sick. You told him that you started working on your operations plan on your first day back at work and that you had to stay in Daejeon for a weekend to attend a conference because one of your managers couldnât go. With that, he missed your friendsâ Sunday lunch out, and then you missed dinner and drinks the Friday after that.
Itâs now the end of January and Jungkookâs been living off of the occasional text messages from you and nothing more. As itâs the Saturday before the end of the winter break, he takes this time to relax and decides on making himself some bulguri noodles and then going for a jog later in the afternoon.
On your end, you intend on cleaning up your apartment after over a month of barely being around. You make a checklist in your head of what to do first when suddenly, your light turns off and for the briefest moment, you think youâre being haunted. But you remember itâs just past lunchtime and ghosts wonât appear until the evening.
You just paid your bills so thatâs not the issue. You call your neighbor and find out that she has her light on, so itâs probably just you. So you ask for help.Â
[to: My Elders] How do you change a lightbulb?
You know that searching online would lead to multiple results, which ironically is going to overwhelm you, so you ask your very adult, very capable friends for advice. Surely theyâll be able to instruct you properly.
[from: joonie] Iâd tell you if I knewÂ
[from: uncle yoon] DONâT. TOUCH. ANYTHING.
[from: suhyeonie] please be careful!!
[from: jiminie pabo] someone pls get to her right away before she burns down her apartment or electrocutes herself
[from: my taetae] kook?
[from: bunny kook] coming
You sigh in relief once Jungkook confirms that heâs on his way. And while you think you can follow instructions had your friends called or sent them in - which they didnât - itâs probably better if someone does it for you. Jungkook just happens to be the one who lives the closest.Â
You try to clean up whatever you can while waiting for him but you only manage to fold some of your clothes before the intercom is ringing and youâre granting him access to come up. He rings the doorbell and you greet him immediately.
âMy savior,â you chirp, fluttering your eyelashes.
âYah, Iâm already here,â he playfully shakes his head. âNo need for puppy eyes or whatever that is.â
âItâs my thankful face!â You correct him. âNot that I expected anyone to be empathic to my plight but wow, our friends were not helpful. Except maybe for Tae, who asked you to come.â
âYou know you can search online for this, right?â Jungkook chuckles as he gets your stool and starts unwinding your old lightbulb.
âYeah but AI will tell me one thing, WikiHow will tell me another, so will TikTok⌠I just didnât want to be overwhelmed.â
âYou⌠a researcher⌠didnât want to be overwhelmed with⌠information?âÂ
âKook, since when did basic things make sense to me?â You pout.
âIâm pretty sure theyâre not that hard to comprehend.â
âLook, if it didnât involve a possible fire or electrocution, Iâd manage,â you argue. âI mean, I can do other things. Just not⌠this. Iâm scared to make a mess.â
You say it so softly and Jungkook hopes he didnât make you feel bad or anything. Itâs not that you expect people to just do everything for you because you actually watch others do them - like now, as you stand close to him and observe him as he replaces your old bulb with a new one. He just thinks there are things you canât really grasp because you werenât exposed to them. He knows you can manage yourself on a farm because you grew up going to one but when it comes to household management, you always had the rest of your family to do them for you.Â
He finishes and turns on the switch to see if itâs working, and you squeal in joy when it does.Â
You even go to him and give him a hug, which catches him off guard. He returns it though, and a part of him wishes heâd prepared for this so he wouldnât act so nonchalant about it.
â___, itâs just a lightbulb,â he points out.
You let him go and laugh, not seeming bothered one bit. He was a little worried that he might come off as snobbish to you though, even if he thinks itâs something heâd totally say.
âItâs a belated hug, Kook. I feel like I havenât seen you in so long,â you say.
âBecause you havenât. Itâs been, whatâ 5, 6 weeks since Sapporo?â
âYeah, that feels like a lifetime ago,â you sigh. âI wanna go back! But yeah, you havenât been around to make fun of me and to take care of me so it feels that much longer. I kinda missed you.â
You say it so casually yet you have no idea how much itâs affecting him. Again, itâs something youâve said to him so many times before. But it sounds different to him now, only because he wishes it carries a different meaning than you probably donât intend.Â
He canât bring himself to say it back, only because heâs worried about how itâll come out, so he expresses wanting to hang out with you instead⌠in a not so direct way.
âWell, Iâm here and I changed your lightbulb, although I suggest getting an LED one so itâs more efficient and itâll last long,â he advises, given that what you have is the incandescent one. âDo you wanna get one at the store? I can replace that already so you wonât have to worry about this one again.â
âSounds like a plan,â you smile sweetly. âBut now that youâve mentioned it, maybe we can get a few more things?â
Jungkook chuckles to himself as he nods then sits on your couch while you change your clothes in the walk-in closet. He hoped for a quick run at the shops and maybe grab something to eat, perhaps talk more about how your past few weeks have been.Â
But now, youâll probably have more time together and that satisfies his desire of being around you. It truly has been so long that he was close to wondering if the Japan trip had been a dream.
The âthingsâ you wanted to get turn out to be Pilates clothes.Â
You and Jungkook arrived at the mall an hour ago and quickly got an LED light bulb at the home store. But then you dragged him to the other floor and into a shop full of leggings and tank tops and sports bras that he just looked at you blankly and you responded with a giggle.
He now awkwardly stands by one of the shelves with hoodies and has to act unbothered when he sees you pick up a few things, willing his mind not to go to places.
âIâll be quick, I promise,â you say.
And you do keep it. He expected you to be in the fitting room for at least 30 minutes but you were done in 10. You say that you just need to try the size and youâll get it in different colors. Efficient, and something he also does.
âHayoung convinced me to get into Pilates,â you share as you grab the bag from the counter. âShe said itâll help with the stress. And getting my weakening body moving because Iâm just in front of the screen most days. I thought I should give it a try so I signed up at the studio near my apartment and I just need to get the proper outfit for it.â
âThat sounds good,â he smiles, softening at how youâre truly trying to manage your stress levels so as not to feel burnt out again. âI know thatâll help. When do you start?â
âNext week! So I just have to get these washed and then Iâll be good. I hope I donât fall on my face while using the machine,â you suddenly frown.
âYou wonât. Just donât force yourself with the tension of the strings,â he advises. âYouâre there to exercise and relax, not to get hurt. Yeah?â
âIâll try. Iâll tell you how it goes,â you smile.Â
âCanât wait to hear it.âÂ
You mindlessly walk around and Jungkook just follows, not knowing what else you have in mind. Heâs about to internally sulk at the thought that today might just end here when you stop in your tracks and turn to him.Â
âDid you have anything else planned today?â You ask.
âJust a jog,â he shrugs, quickly adding that itâs something he can do tomorrow once your face falls a little. âWhy? Did you want to buy anything else?â
âI donât have an outfit for our all-white college reunion party,â you pout.Â
âThatâs in three monthsâ he says.Â
âTwo and a half,â you correct. âI wanna get a dress already because Iâm definitely gonna forget it. And so I have time to have it dry-cleaned. Do you have something to wear?â
âUh, a white shirt?â
âBoo, corny,â you chide. âItâs gonna be at a Club, Kook,â you remind him, referring to the one owned by Jihyo, your friend from university who also organized the event.
âWhat else am I supposed to wear?â Jungkook laughs.
âWell, you can show up in a tank top and youâd still look nice,â you say nonchalantly as you head towards another direction.
âDid you just compliment my looks?â He jogs after you. âYouâve never done that!â
âOh, donât be dramatic. I always praise your cute nose.â
âThat⌠that was never a compliment,â he frowns.
But you donât mind him, as you quickly enter a store and start looking around.Â
He follows you and observes how you shop. You touch the items hanging on the shelf as you pass them by even if itâs not what youâre looking for. When you see something you think you like, you stare at it for a good five minutes before deciding to either try it on or put it back. When you do try on something, youâre quite expressive, as he could hear you groan or yelp even when heâs outside the fitting room area.
You leave another store empty-handed and you apologize for dragging him around and possibly boring him. He insists heâs fine and that itâs not like itâs something he hasnât done before, clarifying that heâd accompanied Mo-eum to look for clothes a few times before as well. Obviously, he doesnât want to imply anything by saying that heâs done this too many times with his ex-girlfriends but looking back, he wasnât as entertained with them as he is with you.Â
Though you tend to hyperfocus when youâre doing something, surprisingly when it comes to shopping, youâre very engaging. You ramble, like you often do, but you also ask him things and try to get his opinion.Â
Itâs been over an hour of looking around but you still havenât found anything. The ones you like are too pricey and the others just donât fit right. You find a newly-opened store and get excited when you see the clothes are your style and you quickly choose a couple for you to try on. Heâs mindlessly looking around when he hears you call for him.
He sees your head peeking out of the curtains. With the sales person attending to another customer, you ask him to help you tie the straps of the dress you have on.
âTheyâre supposed to be ribbons but I canât tie them properly,â you say. âCan you fix them so I can see if itâs nice?â
He nods as he works on them, trying his best to make the knot look pretty. You turn around so he can work on the other side and he does his best to not fall into the temptation of looking at you while he does. When he finishes, you face the mirror and smile.
âIt looks pretty,â you beam.
âIt does. So are you getting that?â
âHmm, probably the other one,â you say, gesturing towards one of the several dresses hanging on the hook. âThat one looked nicer.â
âOh,â is all he can say. You already look pretty in this one so that could only mean that the other option is much prettier. âOkay.â
âMission accomplished,â you smile at him now. âIâll get dressed and get that!â
Itâs late in the afternoon by the time you finish, and youâre reminded that youâve only had some sweet bread all day and youâre starving, something Jungkook learns when your stomach starts to grumble.
âSo⌠early dinner?â He chuckles.Â
âYes. And weâre having Japanese.â
He suggests a hotpot place after you said that you miss the soup he made on your last night in Sapporo. He comments that you seem to enjoy his cooking a lot and you remark that theyâre very hearty and that he should cook for you more. Itâs a request he doesnât mind fulfilling, especially if thatâll mean being with you again.
You order a similar-tasting broth from the one he made, and you sigh in delight at just being able to take in the scent of a restaurant that reminds you of your trip from a few weeks ago.
âThat week felt so fast,â you say. âThe days were long and slow but they somehow still ended so soon. Did you enjoy that trip, Kook?â
âOf course. Whyâd you think I wouldnât?â
âI donât know. I hurt your abs and smacked you with a pillow and you gave me a piggyback ride and dealt with my injuries,â you shrug.Â
âBut I got free beer and a nice bottle of whiskey,â he reminds you.
âTrue. And I didnât elbow your face when I slept next to you,â you remind him as well.Â
âYup, that was a very big factor,â he nods.
âI couldnât hurt the nose,â you sweetly smile at him.
He just playfully shakes his head at you and you clarify that you just find it adorable.Â
At least you find him charming, he thinks to himself.
You sit across from each other as you devour your dinner and talk about more stories of your visit to your hometown and how his weeks of training his students have been. You reminisce about Sapporo once more and mention the places you want to travel to in the future.Â
Youâre laughing about a memory from your Hong Kong trip years ago when Jungkook gets a call. When you find out itâs Taehyung on the other end, you ask for the phone to say hi.
â___!â Taehyung greets. âI was just asking Kook if he got to save your ass from being electrocuted or something.â
âYes, he did,â you playfully roll your eyes. âThanks for telling him to go to me though. I wouldâve waited for him to pity me before I asked him to come over.â
âNah, he wouldâve gone to you either way,â your friend laughs. âWhere are you now?â
âHaving dinner out,â you say. âWe bought an LED light bulb and I ended up running errands and I dragged him with me. Poor guy had to deal with my annoying ass today,â you add, as if lamenting on his behalf. âI at least didnât trip or hurt myself.â
âThatâs new,â Taehyung hums. âBut Iâm sure he doesnât mind it. Anyway, I was just asking him to send me something. Iâll leave you two to your dinner. See you on Thursday after work?â
âYes, at 5 PM,â you say, referring to this string quartet charity event you asked him to watch with you. âHereâs Kook.â
You give the phone back to Jungkook and slurp the remainder of soup in your bowl.
âYeah, Iâve got all the ones you asked for. Iâll give the hard drive tomorrow. Bye!â
He drops the call and you ask him what Taehyung needed.Â
âHe asks me to download movies for him,â Jungkook says. âLike, the black and white Hollywood kind. Theyâre kinda hard to find.â
âAww, Kook. Thatâs sweet. So youâre who he gets them from,â you smile. âSo wait, can you download movies for me, too?â
âSure, just tell me what you want. I can give you the hard drive onââ
âSaturday? Thereâs no rush. I wonât get to watch until the weekend, anyway.â
âAlright, then.â
âThank you,â you smile at him again, the kind thatâs meant to express your appreciation for all the things he does for you.
And the thing is, he doesnât mind doing them. Even if he didnât have these developing feelings for you, itâs something heâd still do. Heâs never minded doing you favors or being collateral damage when you hurt yourself or having to take care of you when you do. Heâd always done them willingly because itâs what he does for all his friends.
He supposes that the difference now is the anticipation of seeing you again when he does. Itâs the excitement over knowing youâd ask him to do something and your accompanying smile and laughter. He supposes thereâs more attachment in how he looks after you and in how he returns your affection.Â
And now with every spontaneous day or planned weekend you make him share with you, he enjoys each minute of it. Not just through your ramblings but through your silence, too; not just in your moments of triumph but in your instances of doubt as well.Â
Itâs like settling into the feeling but more. Itâs as if somewhere along the way of your friendship, he learned to settle into you.Â
âI thought you wanted to watch this,â Jungkook mumbles as he munches on some popcorn. âWhy are you covering your face?â
âBecause itâs scary, duh,â you bite back as you wrap one arm around your folded legs while your other hand makes slits over your eyes. âThe spirit's gonna kill the sons now!â
âWell yeah, thatâs what bad spirits do,â he deadpans. âWhy did you want to watch this in the first place?â
âBecause I heard itâs a good moâ Ah!â You squeal. You wait for the next scene and try to catch your breath. âI heard itâs a good movie. Plus, I like horror. Didnât you know that?â
âI do, I mean⌠youâre always up for it whenever I suggest watching one. You just scream a lot. I guess you could like something and not enjoy it all the time.â
âI enjoy it though,â you correct him. âGetting scared and stressed and yelling is all part of the fun. Just like how in rom-coms, the frustration over the two leads being dumb is part of the experience. You take it all and that makes everything so satisfying.â
Jungkook merely nods in agreement but lingers on what you just said. The more he spends time with you, the more he learns how contradictory you are as a person, which is something he admires so much about you.Â
As a professional, youâre intellectual and decisive. Youâre passionate and intentional and every single thing has a purpose or meaning for you. Outside of that, you feel intensely, whatever it is - fear, joy, wonder, anger, but you take them as part of a whole. Youâre clumsy and disorganized sometimes. Youâre affectionate and transparent yet thereâs always something more that you feel and want, something that heâs unsure youâve figured out yet.Â
And as he sneaks a glance at your wide eyes and anxious face over the next scene, he canât help but smile at how open you are to feeling whatâs out there for you. Itâs quite captivating to watch, as heâs one who prefers to feel things more moderately, and perhaps itâs why it took this long for his feelings for you to develop.
His thoughts are disrupted with your gasp, followed by milder curses than he expected, and then another shriek. He focuses on the movie now, as heâs sure youâre gonna wanna talk about it after, and it ends with your deep exhale and your satisfied smile.Â
âThat was good,â you say, as you grab a can of beer from your fridge and hand him one.Â
You rehash the whole two hours while you sit next to him on the couch then conclude that youâre still a little creeped out so you state you want to watch something else.Â
âThe Thai movie about the grandmother,â you say, choosing from the long list of things you had him download.
âAre you sure?â He cocks an eyebrow.
âYes, I heard itâs good, too,â you shrug, already getting comfortable.Â
âOkay, then.â
As it turns out, itâs as emotional as it is good. And you canât stop the tears as they waterfall down your face, to the point that you can barely breathe through your nose. You, in fact, wail, and you can hear Jungkook stop himself from laughing, even if despite your glassy eyes, you can see him tear up as well.Â
âYou can cry, you know?â You turn to him, prompting him to pause the film.Â
Youâre sniffing and distorting your face and he chuckles in response.Â
âI was about to but you started sobbing. It felt like your tears were good enough for the both of us,â he hums.
âItâs sad,â you pout.Â
âI know, and you wanted this,â he points out. âBut hey, part of the experience, right?â
You nod because itâs true. Youâd rather watch comedy dramas that make you hurt so good or horror movies that make you jump off your seat over ones that barely make you feel anything at all. But you suppose thatâs how youâve always lived your life.Â
People think youâre driven by logic and ideas all the time but you surprise yourself with how much you feel and how much that motivates you. But then again, thatâs exactly why youâre in the field youâre in, and not everybody gets to understand or even see that.
Your tears remain and Jungkook scoots closer to wipe them off your cheeks with his paw sweaters. You meet his worried doe-eyes and you didnât realize how innocent-looking yet expressive they are. You suddenly hiccup and he playfully shakes his head in response.
âI wanna laugh now,â you mumble.
âWeâre going through the emotions of the wheel now, arenât we?â Jungkook chuckles while proceeding to check his movie list again. âIâve gotââ
âWhat if we just watch Running Man reruns? I kinda donât wanna be invested in characters again but I just don't wanna be sad anymore.â
âThen we go with that,â he nods. âAnd⌠uh, do you have anything I could cook for dinner?â
You check the time and realize itâs almost 7 PM. You had lunch out with Hayoung earlier then started your movie marathon with Jungkook when you got home. Youâve been with him for hours and it feels like time is flying.Â
âRamen?âÂ
âSure, I can get two packs ready,â he hums, standing up to find his way around your tiny kitchen.
âIâll also order pizza because Iâm craving. What about chicken?â
âHey, as long as itâs good food, Iâm all in.â
As it turns out, eating Jungkookâs creamy ramen, then some pizza, and then some chicken wings over beer while laughing your bellies off is incredibly satisfying. Youâre in tears for half of it because not only is the show funny, but so are Jungkookâs ridiculous side comments and imitation of the hosts and guests. You have to beg him to stop and let you breathe.Â
This is one of the most unhinged youâd seen him and you donât care one bit that youâre snorting in laughter or close to drooling at this point. Once you calm down, you stretch your legs on the floor where youâve been since you started dinner, and you breathe deeply.
âI needed this,â you smile then turn to look at him. âI needed to laugh and just⌠be comfortable.â
âWhy? Work bugging you down? Pilates not yet working?â
âWork is always stressful and Iâve accepted that. Pilates is something Iâm still getting used to but it helped that one day I needed to relax,â you say. âBut I guess I just needed to laugh and cry and stuff myself with good food and not worry about the next day or something. Thanks for coming over with your movie library and watching and eating with me, Kook. It was fun.â
âGlad I could help you with having a worry-free day like this,â he replies. âAnd honestly, it feels good to just do whatever you want and not really have plans. Itâs why I spend my weekends the way I do.â
âSo it feels good being with me, then?â you smirk.
âOf course. Youâre a little chaotic sometimes,â he teases. âBut itâs part of the fun. I get to let loose and watch you be a weirdo.â
âWell Iâm glad,â you softly smile this time. âYouâre a little weird sometimes, too. I get to enjoy myself a little bit more when Iâm around you. I mean, I say that about the other guys as well but I guess we havenât spent as much time together.â
âWe do now.â
âI know. And itâs fun. I hope you donât get sick of me yet.â
He could tease you and say he already is, but he doesnât want to lie to you like that. He doesnât want you to think that even a tiny part of him would prefer not having you around.Â
The truth is, heâs been finding it harder to let a day pass without speaking to you, and he reminds himself to do things gradually and naturally despite the fear that youâd freak out and think of him differently just because heâs treating you differently.Â
âJust keep being that way and I wonât,â he says instead.
âHmm. Thatâs a relief. I will, then.â
Jungkook sees you again the next Wednesday after Jimin messaged to ask who was free for dinner and drinks after work. A few from the group made it, including you, and even if Jungkook was a few seats away, just knowing you were okay and enjoying Pilates and eating well was enough to appease him.
He sees you again on Saturday for a late celebration of Hoseokâs birthday where you hog the mic during karaoke despite being tone deaf and unable to hold a note. Jungkook tries to remember all the times this had happened before and if he had found you as endearing as he finds you now.Â
He tries to make sure youâre okay the next day, and he ends up grabbing you some hangover soup and drinks just to get rid of the headache. You sleep for pretty much the whole day but those two hours with you was enough to get him through the week.Â
Youâre off to a work trip overseas over the next weekend so Jungkook decides to preoccupy himself with a full day of gaming and probably an evening swim. But then Taehyung comes over to hang out and with his friend leaving in a few months, Jungkook welcomes the company.Â
Jimin joins for lunch then leaves for a shoot. Mo-eum drops by then leaves as well for a family dinner.Â
Itâs during the second half of the FIFA game theyâre playing when Jungkookâs phone beeps. A small smile forms on his face when he glances at your multiple messages, perhaps to rant about the food like you did last night, or to say that the bugs were biting you again, or maybe to talk about some research project you came up with while taking a shit - because yes, it apparently happens.Â
He hopes Taehyung doesnât notice but his friend is quite observant, so he does.Â
âIs ___ doing okay?âÂ
Jungkook misses a free kick at the sound of your name.
âWhat?â
Taehyung gestures towards the beeping phone.Â
â___. Thatâs her, right?â
âUh, yeah,â Jungkook hums as he finally checks your messages and learns that yes, itâs the food.Â
You also got a papercut and he can imagine you whining about it.Â
âSheâs just⌠you know, talking about the conference sheâs attending,â Jungkook continues as he sends replies of memes and questions of how itâs going and if the annoying guy from yesterday is still bugging you.
âHmm, I see,â Taehyung hums as he attempts a kick. âI was with her last week, right? She had that charity event she asked me to attend with her. We had dinner after and she was laughing while texting someone. It was you.â
âOh, right.â
Jungkook instantly remembers what both of you were talking about then.
âI was just telling her this vacation story of one of the teachers. It was funny.â
âWow, how trivial. And to think you donât even reply to me,â Taehyung chides.
âItâs because you prefer to call me! Or randomly show up at my door just like you did today,â Jungkook counters.
âBecause you literally donât reply!âÂ
Jungkook just shrugs and focuses on the match, hoping his friend would just drop it. Instead, he pauses the game.
âOkay, Kook. Iâm gonna ask you a question and you gotta answer me honestly. Just remember that youâre a terrible liar.â
Jungkook groans in response. âWhat?â
âDo you⌠like ___?â
Jungkook could easily deny it, but he also knows that he is a terrible liar and Taehyung would figure it out anyway. So he answers after a few seconds and understates the truth.
âI⌠I guess thereâs something more.â
âItâs a yes or a no.â
Thereâs another beat of silence, as Jungkook is nervous about verbalizing something heâs been keeping to himself for months.
âI mean, between shopping with her, downloading her movies, driving her around⌠it should be clear, right?â Taehyung presses further.
âHey, I do those things for you,â Jungkook tries to defend himself as he feels like heâs being called out.
âYah! Do you think Iâm stupid? Do you steal glances at me, too?â
âNo.â
âExactly, but you do it with her. And you let her squish your cheeks and you hate it when we do it.â
âSheâs always been much gentler,â Jungkook reasons.
âShe rarely is but sure,â Taehyung chuckles. âSo, you really do like her, huh?â
âItâs something that just happened,â Jungkook sighs, knowing thereâs no point in hiding anymore. âI donât even know how. I mean, weâve been good friends for years, Tae. Weâve seen each otherâs highs and lows. Weâve witnessed each otherâs relationships and breakups, and weâve just⌠always been around each other.â
Jungkook looks back at the days when it was all so simple, then suddenly being hit by a train from out of nowhere.Â
âThere was no fuss, no drama, no expectations, no desire. Just friends,â he continues. âAnd then one day it was like⌠suddenly she looked so cute whenever she complained or pouted. And then it was fun just watching her tell stories and be weird and be smart. And then it felt nice when she would do something nice for me. And then I liked how she looked whenever I did something nice for her. And then⌠and then she stood up for me to my ex then hugged me later that night and I havenât stopped thinking about her since then.â
âSo it started that night, huh?â Taehyung smiles. âWas it seeing her angry and defending you?â
âYeah⌠and then seeing her be so gentle after that,â Jungkook hums. âItâs how sheâs always been - intense, loyal, caring. I guess Iâve always admired those things about her. Iâve always enjoyed having her around but that comfort, that familiarity, that desire for something a bit chaotic but also reassuring that I get with her, it just suddenly felt different. And I just wanted more of that, I guess.â
âWas it really all sudden, though?â Taehyung wonders. âI mean, how could something like her presence and her quirks and all these good things about her be there all these years and then just be different one day?â
âI was thinking about that because I couldnât really figure out how I could just feel differently about her.â
âAnd?â
âI settled into her, I think thatâs what it was.â
Jungkook has been pondering on it since movie night at your place. Itâs like moving into a house then becoming familiar with it over time, and then it becomes comfortable, and then it becomes a home.Â
Sure, the floorboards creak and the faucet leaks sometimes and thereâs a stain on the wall that wonât get off but it doesnât matter, because heâs already settled in and he likes the place. He likes its flaws and wear and tears⌠It's all part of the experience. And friends are like that - thereâs no changing or forcing anything. Friends kinda just adjust their way around each other over time and just fit together a certain way.Â
Thatâs how it was with you.
He tries to explain this and Taehyung nods, understanding what he means because all his friends feel like home, too.Â
âWhat was it like when it changed, then? When did it become more?â He asks.
âWhen I realized that, hey, I think I wanna hold hands in this home, too. I wanna kiss and cuddle and get to know every inch of it. I⌠I wanna stay here. Something like that.âÂ
Jungkook smiles, thinking back to that night you hugged him after a tough night. And how every time youâd done it since then made him want you to do it again.Â
He thinks back to the moments these past months of your hands or arms brushing, and him wondering what itâs like to intertwine his fingers with yours. Maybe have you touch his cheeks again but look deeply into his eyes this time.Â
Taehyung feels comforted by his friend being able to express his feelings like this, something heâs never really been that comfortable doing before.Â
Jungkook feels deeply, but heâs a bit more reserved than most of their friends. He tends to express whatever he feels by being dependable, by being someone they could be around and not feel judged, by being encouraging in his quiet way. Even in his past relationships, Jungkook just seemed to suppress what he felt - whether it was love or affection or hurt or anger. To be able to articulate all that he feels for you in this way is quite special. Maybe youâre rubbing off on him.
âHmm. Sounds like a couple we know. And theyâre getting married in a few months,â Taehyung smiles now.
âIâm not even thinking about that far into the future,â Jungkook frowns.
âI know but thatâs not the point,â Taehyung corrects. âI just meant that it happens, Kook. Thatâs how some love stories go. Just like with my brother. He and Hayoung got along so well that we just kept secretly waiting for them to finally get together. And they did, seven years after they met. Because that friendship just naturally became deeper and blossomed into something more. I mean, itâs a natural thing. Like you said, you just learn to⌠settle into someone. You gravitate towards them, feel like theyâre a person you can tuck yourself in and just be comfortable with and thatâs such a beautiful feeling. Iâve witnessed it with them and Iâm witnessing it with you, too.â
âIs that how you knew?â Jungkook chuckles as he shakes his head, unsure if his friend is just that perceptive or if heâs that transparent. âBecause youâve seen it happen with your brother?â
âSort of,â Taehyung hums. âBut Iâm close to her, Kook. And I know how I am with her. Iâm fond of her, Iâm amazed by her, I want to take care of her, but she also drives me crazy sometimes. In a very sibling-like way because thatâs how I treat her. Thatâs how I see her. I saw how you took care of her during the flight to Japan. I saw how you smiled every time she did. Even when she was being a brat, you just⌠wanted to be there for her. And itâs different from how Jimin or I treat her.â
Jungkook nods, thinking now that perhaps those times in Sapporo when his friend looked at both of you smiling, left you alone together, or even had him give you a piggyback ride was Taehyungâs way of figuring it out. But another thought alerts Jungkook.
âShit. Do you think he knows? Or maybe Mo-eum?â
âThey havenât said anything. But then again, you and ___ have kinda been treating each other the same way. I think Iâm just noticing the subtle differences because Iâve been away for a while. And well, since Iâm leaving again I'm a little bit more sentimental,â Taehyung laughs. âWhy, donât you want them to know?â
âNot yet,â Jungkook shakes his head.
âWhy not?â
âBecause they might tell me to keep off or run for the hills.â
âOr tell you to get your head out of your ass and do something about it,â Taehyung exclaims.
âThey could, and Iâm not sure if Iâm ready for any of that. I.. I want her to settle into me. Naturally.â
âI get that, but this is the same girl who meets someone and then gets attracted to them right away. Just saying,â Taehyung warns.Â
Youâve always said you tend to act on your intense feelings immediately. Itâs true that at any point, you could serendipitously meet someone and then pursue them the next day.
â___ is used to a life where things are clear to her, including the people in them,â Taehyung continues. âSheâs always been honest about her intentions with others and doesnât compromise who she is with them, and we all like that about her. You might wanna just let things happen because you donât wanna rush or pressure her and I get that but a little nudge wonât hurt.â
âHow do I do that?â
âBe intentional, I guess. Act on what you feel but gently, gradually,â Taehyung advises. âPut feelers out and see how she thinks about friendships and relationships and whatnot.âÂ
âI guess I kinda have been⌠unknowingly,â Jungkook shakes his head. âWeâve been having tons of conversations about how we dealt with our relationships and how we go about them.â
âAnd?â
âYou know how we used to tease her with Namjoon?â
âYeah, and she said that helpless clumsy people will burn the house down and so it was never gonna happen,â Taehyung laughs.
âThereâs that. But she also wonders how someone could just one day decide to like a friend theyâve known for years. Itâs a normal thing like you said but I guess itâs just not how she approaches relationships,â Jungkook says. âAnd thereâs nothing wrong about that. Itâs just⌠how do I make her see me as something more?â
âShow her that you could be? How would she know if youâre a home she wants to cuddle and kiss and hold hands in if you donât show that potential?â Taehyung points out. âYou donât have to impress her or treat her so differently all of a sudden. Just be natural but know that youâll have to be assertive when the time comes.â
âThat is the most confusing thing but I guess that worksâ Jungkook sighs. âSo⌠should I pick her up from the airport tomorrow, then?â
Jungkook picks you up from the airport on Sunday. Your conference wrapped up in the morning but your flight was delayed and youâve been irritable since then, given that you werenât able to eat a decent lunch.
You were texting with him last night and he kindly offered to give you a ride, reminding you that he likes long drives so itâs not a bother. You couldnât say no, especially since an hour-long trip is much better having him to just talk with, something youâve been enjoying a lot recently.Â
Jungkook was never really the texting type, that much you knew. He barely replies in group chats and the rare times you would message each other in the past was about random, shallow things. It wasnât until a few months ago when you started texting more frequently, and your conversations go from mundane to deep, and you appreciate them equally.
Outside of that, youâve been spending more time together, too, and you like that as well. Heâs just a calming person to be around, very chill and laid-back, and you suppose itâs what youâve been needing.Â
You know that heâs a reserved guy, often quiet and not very expressive compared to your other friends, unless heâs teasing you. Heâs the kind to not let things bother him easily but also just does whatever he likes as long as he doesn't get in anyone's way.Â
You suppose thatâs one reason why you were always closer to Jimin and Taehyung - theyâre uninhibited and a little crazy like you, always going off about something together, narrating things animatedly, and being dramatic about everything. Jungkook, alongside Mo-eum, would just sit around and watch the three of you do all of that, and then take care of any one of you when needed. Â
While you still do most of those, you suppose that over time, youâve all mellowed down a little bit. Over time, youâve needed something else - a presence to calm you down and to contrast your often frenzied and chaotic state, a kind of energy that balances you out and grounds you.Â
Jungkook has been that for you recently. He listens to you rant about everything. He reassures you about your thoughts but also offers a different perspective. He makes you laugh and teases you comfortably. He shows up when you need him and he takes care of you like itâs second nature.Â
You know thatâs the kind of person heâs always been. You donât know though if youâve just taken it for granted all these years because of that; you donât really remember appreciating or even depending on him this way before. Perhaps itâs just time thatâs passed and you grew up. Maybe at this point in your life, thatâs the kind of person you need more of.Â
You smile at the thought as you watch Jungkook load your luggage in the trunk then head to the driver seat. He asks you about the delay and how the flight was. You say it was fine but that you only got to eat a sandwich at the airport and now youâre hungry, which makes it worse because you didnât even enjoy the food at the conference.
âWas it really that bad?â He asks.Â
âFor some reason, everything was spicy,â you frown. âAnd those that werenât were just too intense and I just wanted something familiar. And delicious. Tae was sending photos of your suyuk from last night and I got so jealous. He said it was really, really good.â
âOh. Do you want that, then?â Jungkook asks. âItâs not hard to make.â
âWhaâ? Are you serious?â You look at him with puppy eyes, although this shouldnât really be surprising anymore.Â
âYeah. Weâll just get back to Seoul late afternoon and then pass by the supermarket for the ingredients. Can you wait until then?â
âI could. I mean, I heard itâs a life-changing dish,â you wink.
âWell, Taehyungâs an easily satisfied guy but I think itâs one of the best things Iâve made, too,â he chuckles. âNot sure about it being life-changing but you can maybe tell me later.â
âIâm sure itâll be, since Iâll be very hungry by then,â you laugh. âBut we could also just eat at a restaurant or something.â
He cocks an eyebrow, knowing that when you set your mind on a certain dish, you need to have it. The fact that you brought it up is a hint that itâs what you really want and Jungkook wonât say no.Â
Heâs unsure if this counts as making a move on you but at this point, heâll take whatever chance he can get to show you he cares and wants to make you happy. And that maybe, let you know in the most subtle way that somethingâs changed on his end without freaking you out.Â
âFine, I know you know I really want to try it,â you giggle at having been caught.Â
You suppose heâs familiar with your antics at this point.Â
âI do,â he playfully shakes his head. âAnd itâs fine, really. I donât mind doing things for you.â
âHmm. That means you arenât sick of me yet!â
âDonât think I will anytime soon.â
Jungkook says it with certainty, and not in a teasing or even shy manner the way youâd expect. But you donât think about it much. Youâre just glad your constant presence hasnât been a bother to him.
You spend the ride talking about how your respective weeks have been. Youâre in your neighborhood before you know it, and heâs stopping by a supermarket and getting the ingredients while you message your friends about having dinner at Jungkookâs place. The three of them quickly reply theyâll be on their way, with Taehyung offering to pick them up.
You watch Jungkook do his magic while you wait for them to arrive, and youâre amazed when he says that he just watched a video on it online then went by feeling when he made it himself. Youâre left in awe; you know your clueless ass could never.Â
Your friends arrive not long after, all of whom are just as excited to eat Jungkookâs dish, even if Taehyung just had it last night. He hypes it up and Jungkook calls him out for setting the expectations too high. He doesnât want to disappoint you, he says.
Sitting next to him, you take your first bite. And your friend is right. This is incredibly delicious; you seriously donât think any other version could top this.
You pinch the corners of your eyes in response, expressing dramatically - as you always do - how good it is. You take another bite with the kimchi, and given the unsatisfying dishes youâve had the past three days, this quite literally tastes like heaven.
You reflexively lean on Jungkookâs shoulder as you close your eyes and savor it.
âFuck, Kook. This is insane,â you moan.
âYeah, well you havenât even eaten it properly yet,â he hums. âHere.â
You turn to him and find him trying to feed you the pork wrapped in lettuce with rice and kimchi. You open your mouth and itâs even more delicious. This tastes like home, and in a way you didnât expect.Â
You curse under your breath again, like Jimin is, while Taehyung and Mo-eum quietly enjoy it.Â
âIt always amused me how Kook is the baby of the group but he never acted like it,â Mo-eum points out.Â
âYeah, it was always me,â you chuckle.
âDebatable. Taeâs the baby. Youâre the princess,â Jimin corrects.Â
âI agree,â Jungkook hums. âBut we never minded, just so you know. At least, I never did.â
He says the last part softly, youâre probably the only one who hears it. Between his assuring words and this dinner he made, thereâs not much you can do, so you prepare a portion of the meat with rice and side dishes, too, and offer to feed him.
He hesitates only briefly but lets you do as you wish. Your fingers graze his face and he feels the shiver on his skin.
âMy thank you ssam,â you smile, and Jungkook praises you for making it well-balanced because thatâs the only harmless thing he can really say.Â
You spend the next two hours the way you usually do when youâre together, until Mo-eum yawns and says sheâll go ahead because her three straight 12-hour night shifts are getting to her. She just wanted to see you so she came, even if you have your usual post-work dinners on Wednesdays. Tuesdays are reserved for Jimin while Taehyung usually just messages you whenever. Jungkook, you realize, has become a staple of your weekends.
Taehyung then offers to take Mo-eum home, then drags Jimin along because they need to buy something.
âWhat about ___?â Mo-eum asks.
âSheâs out of the way,â Taehyung answers. âPlus, she craved this so sheâll help Jungkook clean up, right?â He continues, smiling sweetly at you.
âOf course I will,â you answer.Â
You bid them goodbye then start clearing the table of the dirty dishes.
â___, you donât have to,â Jungkook says, taking them from you.
âThis has always been my task,â you pout. âPlus, this is all I can do. You always do so much for me.â
You donât wait for him to respond and proceed to washing the dishes. He stands next to you though and you continue talking, up until he drives you home then messages you good night.Â
You end up seeing Jungkook pretty much every week after that, whether itâs because of a get-together - like karaoke night on Friday after work, or a special event - such as the screening of the movie that Yoongi composed the music for.
You see him on your own, too, like on nights when you crave something after work, when thereâs a movie you ask him to download that he watches with you, when you have an errand to do that you donât feel like doing alone, or to cheer for his high school taekwondo team, just like you promised.Â
Heâs always willing to join you even if heâs got things going on himself. He just says he doesnât mind and deep down, youâre glad that he truly hasnât gotten sick of you yet, given your tendencies to whine about things and complain about your work despite how much you love it.Â
Jungkook shares a lot more about himself, too. Not that he never did but you notice him being more open and comfortable about things he worries about - like how his students will grow up to be and if heâs being a good role model to them. Thereâs the occasional mention of wondering if heâll be a good enough partner to whoever heâll end up with after you open up a bit more about your past relationships.
Itâs always stuck with you how he says that being with someone means that you witness the birth of a different person every time and then celebrating that. It strikes you because you feel like somewhere along the way, even you failed to do that yourself - accept how youâve changed then embracing it. But he says heâs also learning, and that being with someone means you learn together.Â
Itâs those conversations that have you appreciating your time with him even more. Heâs there when thereâs chaos in your mind, and even more so when itâs around you.
Itâs near the end of April when you find yourself in Mo-eumâs apartment with Jimin, getting ready for your college reunion party. It feels like itâs been a while since you dolled up for something like this. Mo-eum, like you, only does it when thereâs a special event. For Jimin, this is a norm in his line of work.Â
Your best friend eyes your outfit, fixes your dress, then suggests a bolder lipstick color.Â
âItâll work with the guys,â he smirks.
âIâm not trying to get anyoneâs attention, just to remind you,â you say, even if you go with the red that he hands you. âItâs a party and Iâll drink, watch people get shit faced, and then bury myself in the covers at night then lay in bed all day tomorrow.â
âYouâre getting old,â he teases.Â
âYouâre gonna feel the effects of all this partying at one point,â you reply.
âNah, Iâve got energy. I keep myself in shape, you know?â
You throw your pillow at him at the dig, but you do point out that you still do your Pilates session every week and thatâs helped with your energy, amongst other things.Â
âPlus, whoâll it work on? The guests are literally the same people from college. No oneâs gonna go for me after all these years and vice versa,â you add.Â
âYou have such a narrow and simplistic way of looking at things sometimes, you know that?â Jimin shakes his head at you. âYou think that attraction is only immediate and a one-time thing, as if it doesnât develop overtime or something.â
âWell, if it wasnât there at the start, then it wonât be there later on,â you shrug.Â
âYou only think that way because all your relationships have been that way,â Mo-eum says.
âYeah, and they all ended right away,â Jimin points out.
âOuch,â you say with no real bite, not like itâs something you havenât thought about anyway.
âYou want the feeling to smack you in the face at first glance,â Mo-eum adds, earning a nod from you because thatâs true. âBut it could also smack you years later, when you least expect it. Isnât that intense and genuine, too?â
âYeah, imagine one day realizing you like that cute ops guy at work that you have lunch with whoâs so chill and unproblematic,â Jimin says. âOr your neighbor from childhood that you still talk with sometimes. Maybe Namjoon? He can already make ramen and you know how to slice fruits now. Who knows, it could be Tae. Or even Kook!â
âJimin, Iâm gonna hold your hand when I say this,â you sigh. âI donât really see myself liking my friends in that way. Things that are good and comfortable donât need to be disrupted.â
â___, Iâm gonna hold your hand when I say this, too,â he counters. âYou can. You only think otherwise because as much as you feel things, you donât really pay attention to them. For you, things and people that are new are the only ones worth giving a shot because thatâs what youâre used to. And I say this in the most loving way - I really think that the one who can truly handle all of you is someone whoâs known you for years.â
Youâre not offended, but it does intrigue you. So you ask what he means.
âYouâre a lot of amazing things but that doesnât mean every new guy you date sees that,â Jimin explains. âAnd I know you never said it directly but you always worried that your exes wouldnât understand you, and so there were parts of you that you didnât really wanna show them.â
You think about your best friendâs words and you agree. You werenât the type who spent less time with your friends when you were in a relationship, and you always thought that meant you maintained your independence and social circles outside of your partner. Deep down, a part of you felt that there were aspects of your life you wanted to keep separate from the men you dated - your friends, your dreams, your bare and unfiltered self.Â
With Jeong-su, you were the passionate student leader who was so sure of herself. So on the days when you were stressing about school or life in general, you ran to your friends and not him. You suppose thatâs where all the fights about not making time for him stemmed from.Â
It was similar with Seungho, as you were the independent and confident woman who worked hard for what she wanted in his eyes, and you felt like you had to keep that image up even if you had bouts of doubt or insecurity. He was aloof and wasnât the type to spoil you. It was his lack of compassion that really bothered you, and you never really sought him for comfort.
There were many things that attracted you to them, but ultimately they faded away. During those years, you were focused on building yourself and your career, and they helped you in a way, because they were also attracted to that side of you - ambitious, polished, uncompromising.Â
But once you became in tune with the more human and flawed, unfiltered parts of yourself, you pushed them away, perhaps fearing they wouldnât understand. Or that they wouldnât want to deal with that side of you at all.Â
Maybe thatâs what Jimin meant about you not paying attention to your feelings. You focused on how they made you feel, and not on what you felt about them, nor about how you felt about yourself because of them. As you grow up, you realize theyâre not the same.Â
âWhat does knowing someone for a long time have anything to do with this?â You try to deflect. âYou can know someone for years and still be surprised by who they are once you learn more.â
âTheyâre not afraid of you,â Jimin responds. âThey donât want to tame nor fit you into an idea they have of you because they already know the many versions of who you are. Theyâve⌠theyâve learned how to exist alongside you and have fun along the way. I think that makes the difference.â
âAnd what does paying attention to how I feel even really mean?â You wonder out loud, as you process more of what he says.Â
âIt means actually thinking about them, you know?â Jimin hums. âLike, giving yourself time to understand what youâre feeling, independently of what they do or say to you. Youâve always gone with your heart and we love that about you but the intense, genuine emotions that you want actually take time. I think itâs something youâll figure out right away. Itâll be different from how it used to feel.â
âOkay, love guru,â Mo-eum chuckles. âWhereâs all this coming from?â
âI listen to this podcast that talks about grown up stuff like relationships and Iâve picked things up,â Jimin shrugs. âBut also I think I have a good read of people. I had a vibe with Seokjin and Hayoung long before they got together.â
âIs that why you keep pushing for Yoongi and Gyu-rim? Because you have a vibe about them?â You ask.Â
âYes. And I just really think they like each other but they donât know it yet.â
âHmm. Interesting. And what about Mo-eum and Tae?âÂ
âI asked her about it before but she didnât answer me,â Jimin responds, triggering your other friendâs memory about that time.Â
It turns out he was right about that, too.
âAnd now Iâll ask you,â Jimin turns to you.Â
âLook, the Namjoon ship sailed a long time ago. You know how I feel about that,â you explain.Â
âI wasnât referring to him,â Jimin shakes his head. âI was gonna ask about Kook.â
âOh,â you and Mo-eum say at the same time.Â
Jimin watches your face distort, going from processing to wondering to somehow lost, and he chuckles in response.
âYou know what, never mind. Iâll leave that for you to think about,â he smiles instead. âAnyway, come on. We have a party to go to.â
You get inside your booked car and decide to not think too much about what Jimin had asked you right before you left. Not that his question was completely out of left field because even you would say that youâve been spending more time with Jungkook lately, but you suppose you hadnât really thought much about what it could mean.Â
You can chalk it up to that unspoken promise from months ago about being better friends to each other, but maybe thatâs a big part of it, too. Was it really just about that? Or have your efforts naturally progressed to mean something more?Â
You internally sigh at all these thoughts that your best friend unfortunately put in your head. Tonightâs not the time to be contemplating about this, not when youâll be around people and around him.Â
And just as the reminder that Jungkook will be here crosses your mind, he just happens to be the first person you see right when you exit the car.
He greets familiar faces as you and your friends meet him and Taehyung in line to the Club before he turns to you with a smile.
âHey!â Jungkook greets, going in for a hug like what you do every time you see each other.
He smells like cotton. Itâs so fresh yet so manly.
âHey,â you return, taking in how he looks. âSo, uh, what happened to the white shirt?â
âTae told me to ditch it. He said this was better,â Jungkook shrugs, eyeing his outfit of white tank top under a simple white jacket. He gestures towards your dress. âSo, this was the nicer option,â he hums.
âYeah,â you nod, remembering that unplanned afternoon of shopping when he let you drag him around the mall. âIs it alright?â
His lips turn up and he leans closer, as you near the entrance and the music gets louder.
âYeah, you look pretty.â
Your smile is immediate and youâre surprised at how much that affects you. Youâre pretty sure heâs called you pretty before, but maybe it has a lot to do with how he looks right now because if youâre being honest to yourself, he looks really good.
You finally enter the Club and get properly greeted by Taehyung, who gives you a tight hug the way he always does. You end up talking about his cameo in this one show and his guest appearance in Running Man, which you and Jungkook watched together the other day.
Once you make it to one of the cocktail tables, you greet your other friends from university and take shots with them to jumpstart the evening. You donât really intend on drinking a lot tonight so you pace yourself and catch up with those you havenât seen for years, including Jihyo, who introduces you to the co-owners of the Club.Â
Itâs not really your favorite thing to do, as meeting people overwhelms you sometimes, but you go along with it. Itâs still a night to dress up and kind of let loose, so thatâs what you do, as you dance around with the ones you used to party a lot with once upon a time.Â
Taehyung is jumping from one group to another, and you never really knew how the theater kid ended up knowing a bunch of people from every faculty and department in your university. Jimin is with his course buddies whom he hangs out with frequently, and you spot Jungkook and Mo-eum in the same area theyâve been since you arrived, chatting and taking shots with people you recognize from their pre-med classes.Â
You finished university about six years ago and though itâs not too long ago, somehow seeing all these people you used to walk by in the halls, the library, or the clubs makes you feel like it is. Thereâs something about them thatâs different than you remember, and it hits you just how much time can change many things - people, places⌠feelings, beliefs.
The initial exhilaration from seeing old friends again and letting loose quickly dies down as your energy starts getting drained and your legs begin to cramp up.Â
Despite your low block heels and not-too-tight dress, you still feel a little bit uncomfortable. Itâs a much different experience than the last time, which you suddenly remember was months ago when Taehyung invited you all to a night out. That was when Jungkookâs ex showed up, and the memory prompts you to quickly search for him, irrationally thinking she might be here even if she doesnât have a reason to be.
You spot him at the same cocktail table, chatting with some girls. You look around to look for either Jimin or Taehyung but a bunch of rowdy guys dance past you and bump you as you make your way towards one of the couches.Â
âHey, you okay?âÂ
You turn around and find Jungkookâs worried eyes looking at you.
âYeah, I was just⌠trying to find a place to chill at,â you respond. âIâm a little tired.â
He gestures towards his earlier spot. âIâve been saving that table all night.â
You follow his lead and get introduced to the girls he was speaking with earlier. They were members of the womenâs swim team that he used to train with. They leave not long after you greet them, then you sit on the stool that Jungkook offers.
âDid you see Mo-eum on her way out?â He asks, leaning closer so you could hear him over the loud music.
âYeah, Jimin and I walked her to Taehyungâs car. She has a shift tomorrow afternoon and she wanted to get some rest tonight,â you explain.Â
âRight, she did mention that,â he nods.
Jungkook offers you water as you talk about who youâve been catching up with all night. You havenât hung out with him much and you quickly feel at ease, reminiscing and giving updates on the other friends youâve both been talking with.
Itâs clear that at this point, people have had more to drink. Thereâs more screaming of the song lyrics, more cheering at the dance floor, and definitely more bumping from those drunkenly walking around.Â
Including this woman who gets bumped and falls to the ground, right next to Jungkook. Sheâs unfamiliar so sheâs probably from another course you didnât really interact with.
He gets over his surprise and quickly crouches down to help her up. She eventually does but instead of just saying her thanks and walking away, she lays her hands on his chest and dazedly smiles. The music is still loud but you hear what she says.
âOh my god, youâre so hot,â she mumbles. âCan I dance with you? Just donât tell my boyfriend. Heâs right over there.â
She giggles and itâs clear sheâs had a lot to drink. But Jungkookâs not the least bit interested, especially given that sheâs not single. Itâs obvious why that puts him in a sour mood.Â
Just as heâs letting her go and moving back, the said boyfriend makes his way towards where youâre sitting, and you get the feeling that things arenât going to end well.Â
He calls out for the girl, saying heâs been looking for her, and she just had to make up a story that sheâs been dancing with Jungkook, which clearly didnât happen. This enrages the man who turns to Jungkook, yelling at him to keep off his girl.Â
Jungkook raises his arms, explaining that all he did was help her up after she fell but the man doesnât listen. Surely by this time, he should be focused on ensuring his girlfriend is fine, but he seems quite drunk, too, so he probably isnât thinking straight.
Thereâs a bit of commotion, as the girl starts whining. Taehyung, unknowing of whatâs happening, sees the man walking closer to where you and Jungkook are, so he attempts to pull the manâs arm to get him away. That enrages him, too, so now heâs turning around and pulling on Taehyungâs shirt, which prompts Jungkook to now pull the man away from your friend.
Which ends badly, as the man tries to shove Jungkook away and ends up elbowing him in the face before he finally leaves you alone.
You shriek in response, shocked at the aggression and how fast everything happened.Â
Youâre just behind Jungkook so you walk to face him and see that heâs busted his lip. He tries to use his white jacket to stop the bleeding, but you gently pull his hand away and place a napkin over it.
âHow bad does it hurt?â You ask, trying to sound calm even if youâre boiling in anger.Â
All Jungkook did was try to help the girl, and though youâre unsure if she intended to deflect and place the blame on him instead, she still shouldnât have taken advantage of the situation like that. And the man definitely didnât need to be that aggressive and unwilling to listen.Â
âIt stings pretty bad,â Jungkook responds, wincing in pain as he puts pressure on the cut.
This angers you even more, and you try to storm off with your clenched fist, pumped up with adrenaline that you think you could even do anything.Â
But Jungkook pulls you back before you could make another step.
âHey, hey. Where are you going?â
By this time, people around you have dispersed. Taehyung followed the guy, perhaps to make sure he gets escorted out of the Club. Itâs just you and Jungkook at the table now, and somehow he looks calmer than you do.
âGive that man a piece of my mind,â you grumble.
âWith your fist?â He cocks an eyebrow.
âWith my words first. And then my fist,â you answer.
He smiles at you, softly, perhaps knowing the way you do that thatâs a stupid idea but that he appreciates the thought regardless.
âYou know you donât have to,â he says. âIâm okay. Itâs just a busted lip.â
âI canât believe he elbowed your face. You were just trying to help,â you scowl.
âI canât believe some stranger elbowed my face before you ever did,â he chuckles, earning you an apology after you reprimand him for joking about something like this.Â
âReally, ___. Iâm fine. The pain will go away soon,â he tries to assure you.Â
You take his word for it and are willing to let it go. Itâs that same time that Taehyung and Jimin get to your table, asking Jungkook how he is. They say that the man has been brought out and they found the girlâs friends for her to go home with. They wanted to make sure she was safe and being taken care of.
âIâm okay,â Jungkook assures them, too. âI just need to ice it and find a pretty good pain reliever for this one.â
âI have some at home that Mo-eum gave me,â you say. âTheyâre really effective but they make you sleepy.â
âThat should be good, yeah?â Jimin asks. â___, can you clean his wound and give him the meds? Jihyo asked us to help with managing the rowdy guests so weâll stay a bit longer.â
âYeah, of course,â you answer, turning to Jungkook who looks a bit apologetic.
âTake my car,â Taehyung offers. âIâll get Mr. Yang to pick you up.â
âThanks, Tae,â you tiredly smile, the adrenaline from earlier now gone and youâre just exhausted and upset.
âAlright. Take care of him, okay?â He gestures towards Jungkook.
âYeah, itâs my turn to,â you say. âTake care of yourselves. Let us know when youâre home.â
Jimin and Taehyung nod in response so you and Jungkook start making your way out of the Club. You come across Jihyo, who apologizes for not managing the crowd better, but Jungkook waves her off, saying it couldâve been worse.
You both wait by the street for Taehyungâs chauffeur, whoâs just coming back from dropping Mo-eum off at her apartment. You move closer to Jungkook to assess the cut, frowning at the memory from earlier. The scene plays in your head and youâre hit with that feeling of anger all over again.
Jungkook sees your face contort and he can tell youâre being worked up thinking about what happened.
âI never asked you if you got hit or something,â he disrupts your thoughts. âAre you okay?â
âYeah, I⌠you, you were blocking him,â you say, recalling how Jungkook immediately stood in front of you, his hands signaling you to move so youâre not close to the man.Â
âHe had a lot to drink and I was scared heâd do something to us.â
âYeah well he did, to you,â you grumble.Â
âLike I said, itâs fine, ___,â he smiles now to try to convince you. âMy lip could've split even more with how built he was but itâs not. Iâll survive.â
âWhy are you so calm?â You question him, wondering if itâs always been in his nature to be like this.
And you remember that it is.Â
âIf Iâm not then who would be between us?â He chuckles.
You frown and bow your head because itâs true. Heâs the one whoâs hurt but youâre the one who seems to be so affected by it.Â
But itâs in your nature, too. Itâs not like itâs the first time youâve ever been angry at someone mistreating him.Â
âHey, Iâm sorry. I donât mean to make light of you being upset,â he mumbles, as he gently tilts your chin up to face him again.
âItâs just⌠I get his anger, okay?â He explains. âIâm not justifying his actions or anything. I mean, I wouldnât react that way. And I⌠didnât. Iâm just saying that yes, he shouldnât have been aggressive but seeing your partner do something like that gets to you and you end up⌠doing unpleasant things. Plus, he had been drinking so that made things worse but Iâm not mad at him. Iâm not mad at anyone.â
His words hit you, as you can imagine that the moment the woman mentioned she had a boyfriend after trying to flirt with him, thoughts swirled in Jungkookâs mind at what probably happened that night when his ex cheated on him. You saw his face fall then, and it angers you all over again at the thought that he experienced all that before and now some stranger tried to make him the other guy because his woman got caught.
Jungkook sees you clench your jaw, seemingly controlling your emotions. Itâs not just anger this time. It seems like thereâs something more.Â
âHey, hey,â he says softly. âWhat else is bothering you?â
âPeople are just so mean,â you huff, close to tears at the overwhelming emotions. âAnd theyâre mean to you. You donât deserve any of that.â
And with your words, Jungkook knows - youâre not just talking about tonight.
He pulls you close to hug you, knowing that this is who you are. You feel things intensely, and while heâs not the type to do that, youâre doing it for him, and that comforts him somehow.Â
He feels you slowly wrap your arms around him and sigh into his chest, as if this is helping you calm down. He also knows that letting you take care of him is one other way to do that.
He pulls away and tilts your chin to face him again.
âI know I donât, so thanks for reminding me,â he says. âI guess I just easily accept bad things that happen to me because there's not much I can do about other peopleâs actions but that doesnât mean I donât get to feel upset. I donât want them to win and they will if I put myself down because of it.â
You nod, understanding what he means.Â
And heâs right. At least you get to be the one whoâs mad about it. You get to expend that negative energy towards those mean people and let them feel even a tiny bit of it in one way or another.Â
âIâll let you treat my cut and Iâll take the meds, yeah?âÂ
âSounds good,â you say, amazed at how heâs the one whoâs still able to pacify you when heâs the one whoâs hurt.
You wait a few minutes more with him until the car arrives.Â
The ride to your apartment is quiet. You spend most of it looking out the window, occasionally turning towards him where he meets your gaze once he senses youâre looking at him. He gives you an assuring smile and you return it, as if to say that you just want to make sure heâs okay.Â
You instruct him to take a seat once he enters your place and you immediately give him the pain reliever. You hand him a cloth-wrapped cube of ice to soothe the cut, which has thankfully stopped bleeding. But you see the blood stains on his jacket sleeves and offer to soak it so they donât stick.
You leave him to prepare a vinegar solution that you search online then return to your dining room. Heâs already rid himself of his jacket, and he sits there with his tattooed arm holding up the ice to his wound, wincing at the sting. That man was big, and youâre thankful that his elbow didnât slice Jungkookâs lip completely open because that definitely couldâve happened.
âHowâs it looking?â He asks, as he shows it to you.
âStill a bit swollen,â you sigh. âHow do you feel?â
âMeds are starting to work,â he yawns.Â
âAnd what do you have to do next?â You ask, remembering that heâs a PE teacher and he definitely knows about cut treatment more than you do.
âJust rinse and make sure I donât irritate it.â
âSounds pretty simple,â you nod. âIt really couldâve been worse,â you shake your head.
âYeah, he couldâve elbowed my nose instead. Imagine that,â he chuckles, knowing how protective you are of it, even if he really doesnât know if you mean it or just say it to tease him.
âIf he did, I really wouldâve gone to him and smacked him or something,â you frown. âNobody messes with that cute nose, I swear.âÂ
âI appreciate how itâs worthy of your protection,â he smiles, yawning again.
You note his glazed eyes and think of how tired he must be right now. Itâs been a long night and you want him to just rest and feel better in the morning.
âJust stay the night, Kook,â you offer. âYou can wash up and go straight to sleep. Iâll set up the sofa bed.â
Jungkook looks softly at you. Youâve been everything heâs needed all night. Even if he was barely with you, he kept glancing to where you were to see if you were enjoying yourself. And of course because you looked really pretty in the white halter dress that he just wanted to see more, and heâs glad he got to tell you that early on.Â
But once he started to get tired from all the socializing, there you were. Both of you got to talking and he immediately felt at ease. And while that woman and her boyfriend disrupted his night, they didnât completely ruin it, not when he gets to be with you at the end of it.Â
Sure, he hopes he didnât have a busted lip but him getting hurt is much better than you experiencing even a fraction of what he did.
So yeah, itâs not all bad. He gets to sleep knowing youâre around him again and that youâll be there in the morning.
âAlright,â he smiles. âIâll get myself cleaned, then.â
Just like before, you give him a towel and clothes to use. The spare toothbrush from last time is still there, you say, and he feels giddy knowing you hadnât thrown it away.
You set up the sofa bed in time and give him something to further soothe his lip. You leave a glass of water on the coffee table, too.
Heâs asleep by the time you finish taking your shower. The cold compress lays loosely on his hand so you kneel next to him and take that away.Â
He looks tired as his mouth is slightly opened and he breathes heavily. But still, he looks peaceful and that assures you.Â
He was never the type to be doted on, especially since heâs always managed to get things done on his own. Most times he doesnât even ask for help, instead looking out for others who need him. You know this, but he also knows of your tendencies to panic and your need to know for certain that heâs okay. Perhaps thatâs why he agreed to stay.Â
You walk towards your bed but decide to look back, as Jiminâs words from earlier ring in your head. Leaning on your wall, you gaze at Jungkook and try to understand what youâve felt this whole evening.
There was that sense of protectiveness earlier. Heâs a good person who deserves good things, and whether itâs because of someone he cared about or a complete stranger, he gets hurt in the end, even if he was just trying to love and trying to help.Â
Youâve always been protective of your friends but there was a different type of intensity when it came to Jungkook. You felt helpless but you also desperately wanted him to know that you were gonna stand up for him regardless of what it meant for you.
As you look at him tonight, itâs a similar feeling, just a bit more mellow. You want to protect him in whatever way you can. You want to see him enjoying life. You want him to know heâs cared for, that someone looks forward to his laughter and his presence, that he makes someoneâs day bearable and fun.Â
And as you lay in bed, you think about what else youâre feeling and it hits you. You want to wrap your arms around him and make him feel comfortable, like thereâs a place for him to breathe and be himself. Because thatâs how heâs been making you feel recently, and thereâs no denying that anymore.
Jungkook is still asleep when you wake up the next day. You both slept through the morning and youâve gotten hungry, so you search for the things heâs allowed to eat and decide on getting some cold noodles and milkshakes delivered.Â
You reply to your friendsâ messages about how heâs doing, and Mo-eum recommends that he just rest since based on your account, he got knocked pretty hard so that might still have an effect on him.Â
Youâre putting his soaked jacket inside your laundry machine when you hear Jungkook grunting awake from his sleep. You head to him immediately and ask him how heâs feeling.
âI feel fine,â he hums, rubbing his eyes as he gets used to the early afternoon light. âThat pain reliever knocked me out good. I needed that sleep.â
âThatâs good to hear,â you nod. âI got us food delivered so just wait a while. Iâm getting your jacket washed, too, if thatâs fine.â
âSure. I can also just come back for it so you donât feel rushed.â
âOkay,â you answer. âI was worried about you last night. I know you know how I get so if you stayed to appease me, I appreciate it, Kook.â
âWhat if I also just wanted to spend more time with you, would that have been okay?â He asks, catching you off guard.Â
Heâs cheeky sometimes, but you donât recall him being this bold. Your heart does a weird thing. Youâre not actually sure if itâs stopped or if itâs just fluttering too hard that you donât feel it.
Maybe itâs the way he said it with his low, gravelly voice. Maybe you're just overthinking what Jimin had said and now youâre putting meaning into everything. The last thing you want is to convince yourself that somethingâs there when there isnât, just because your best friend assumed that there was.Â
Your face might have made a dozen different expressions again because before you can answer, heâs already chuckling at you and standing up, seemingly not interested - or perhaps just impatient - in what you have to say.
âIâll just wash my face,â he says.
Jungkook faces the mirror and scolds himself. What he said was way too bold than what youâre used to, even if itâs the truth. He truly couldâve managed on his own, even if he probably wouldâve sleepily dragged himself up to his apartment last night.
But he stayed because he knew youâd be worrying. And he wanted to bask in that feeling, even if he fell asleep right away. But being here, seeing you first thing in the morning, and spending a few more hours with you - those are things he wants to do, too.
He recalls what he told Taehyung heâd do about his feelings for you. Heâll probably drop hints or be a little more forward, but he doesnât want to overdo it nor be too different for fear of scaring you. Or worse, pressuring you. Youâll most likely tell him off.
He wants you to settle into him, like heâd said. He wants you to just feel your way around him until youâre comfortable - until you want to hold hands and kiss and cuddle. If thatâs what you want.
Youâre preparing the delivered food by the time heâs finished in the bathroom and he sits in front of you, acting like there arenât a hundred things running through his mind. This domesticity is one of them; liking and wanting more of it is another.
You no longer seemed too bothered about what he said earlier and you both get into your usual banter while eating.Â
Your phone beeps, so does Jungkookâs, and it seems that your friends have resumed asking how he is, now that youâve informed them that heâs awake.
âReply, please. Theyâll wanna hear it from you,â you tell him.Â
They eventually call. Jiminâs driving, Taehyung is working out, and Mo-eum is on her way to her shift. You let Jungkook share his account this time and you watch him from your seat, happy that heâs regained his energy. Thereâs that smile again. And your heart has seriously been so weird since last night.
You wonder if itâs always done that. Or perhaps this is an entirely new feeling that youâre slowly discovering.Â
Jungkook scrunches his nose. Heâs laughing and then asking if youâre full and then filling your glass with water. Youâre reminded that yes, heâs always been like this.
Itâs you thatâs probably changed. And youâre not quite sure what to do. Keep your distance to sort your feelings out and see if youâll miss him? Keep spending time with him and see if the sensation and giddiness continue?Â
Just then, you get a notification from your other group chat, and itâs Hayoung whoâs messaging.
[hayoung đ] Hello friends! Less than 2 weeks until our pre-wedding party / send off trip for Tae in Jeju! Iâve got everything booked. Meet up at 11 in the airport!
[hayoung đ] To Kook and ___ who canât leave earlier because of work (boooo đ˘), Iâve arranged an airport transfer to drive you to the house. Iâll send the details later. See you all! We canât wait!
Youâre reminded of the last trip before Taehyung leaves, the late afternoon flight you have with Jungkook, and the four days youâll be spending with him.
Seems like youâll have to go with the second option, then.Â

VIPERWOOIN 2021
seeing issei in a suit was nothing new. his job required him to step out in one every now and then so the sight is something you see often but never can stop the shiver that runs straight to your core. this time it isnât a job event that the only time you get to admire him is when heâs getting ready, this is a âvery high classâ party that oikawa invited the two of you, makki and iwa to for his amazing wins in the olympics and him coming home for a month. this time you got to admire him get ready but also got to spend the night gawking at him.
well right now itâs more like he gets to watch you get ready, heâs been doing so for the past three hours since you hopped out of the shower. you were on the floor infront of your full length mirror doing your makeup while your hair was for last. the loud music coming from your speaker was enough to get you excited for the night ahead. oikawa warned everyone that it wasnât a normal little get together, no far from that, everyone had to wear suits or a fancy dress, no shirt and jeans shit. he rented out a room used for wedding receptions and the needed amount of rooms in the hotel for everyone attending so no one had to worry about getting home. when you asked how much it all cost he held a dramatic hand to his chest âyou dont want to know (y/n) my bank account is still not to happy with meâ.
the sound of the bed creaking behind you brought you out of your daydream to see issei stretching and walking towards the bathroom. âmâ gonna shower so you know that means we donât have long left so chop chop miss perfectâ. âi know i know iâm nearly thereâ. truthfully you werenât and slightly started panicking. quickly finishing off your make up you moved onto the hair on your head when you heard the shower start and a deep voice try to sing along to the lyrics coming from your speaker. when the noise of the water hitting the tiles came to a stop you were just adding the finishing touches to your hair. emerging from the steamy bathroom was your lover in all his glory with a blue towel hanging low on his waist. looking at him through the mirror you could see the muscles moving in his broad back as he fished for black button up, black suit jacket and black slacks. âdonât be staring too hard now, might burn holes in my backâ. the sudden noise of his voice making you scowl at him and stand to your feet to get your own outfit.
just watching him dress himself was mesmerising. the way the crisp black shirt sleeves strained around his biceps had you drooling, the way his thick fingers did up the tiny buttons, leaving the top two undone to show his tan upper chest, the way he jumped into his slacks that were a tad tight around his thighs and ass but still had him looking gorgeous. remembering your on a time crunch you get into your own clothes and look for your shoes in the collection on your floor. as you were bent over you felt a pair of hands on your hips and a force that nearly had you flying push into your ass. letting out a yelp you stand up to see the culprit with a traditional lazy smirk on his face. âfakebanging really? what are we, in high school again âsei?â you sighed at the laughing man, âsorry, sorry i just couldnât resist when itâs there for the takingâ he said referring to your own behind and landing a slap then a squeeze. âthis outside really does you good, look so gorgeous. like alwaysâ. he whispered the last part lowly into your ear, âokay sweet talker, letâs get going before you make us late againâ. you said leaving him spluttering out a response; âitâs always your fault excuse meâ.
arriving surprisingly ontime you went inside to find the others while issei parked the car up. walking to the entrance of the large room two men stood infront of you asking for your invitation proof. pulling it from your purse you held it out to one of them and he gave you a nod to signal you can finally go in. âi know he said high class but god, i thought he was jokingâ. you thought as you closed your purse back up and moved to find your three friends.
seeing a head of strawberry blonde hair and the unforgettable sound of saids laugh, you made your way over to your high school best friend who youâve seen a few weeks ago, but it felt like years. âmakki!â you shouted over the music to try catch his attention. whipping his head in the direction of your voice he threw his hands up, spilling some of his fruity cocktail in the process. â(y/n) get over here!â. speeding up as much as you could you made your way to embrace him in a hug. the fabric of his turtle neck under his suit jacket smelt just the same as it has all these years.
âyou probably seen him two days ago, whereâs my reunion hug hm?â. now you couldnât forget the bass of that voice. âhajime oh my god! you look so different!â. he did change quite a bit from the last time you seen each other âiâd say i do, all i did was get a tanâ laughing slightly and embracing you with a pair of strong arms âno no i think youâve grown a bitâ. you commented seeing how he was growing to the same height as makki nearly ânah thatâs his elevator shoes.â takahiro butted in with a sly laugh âwatch it pinky. whereâs mattsun (y/n)? he ditch us or something?â iwaizumi questioned the absence of one of the groups friends. âoh no heâs parking the car, but he is taking a while now that you mention itâ as you finished telling iwa where he was you were about to turn to see where he was until a pair of large hands landed on your hips and shook your frame, electing a quiet yelp from you. âbitching about me now huh?â. you looked up at your lover while placing a hand on your heart from the intensity of the scare he just gave you. âdonât scare me like that assholeâ placing a kiss on your cheek he gave you âcondolencesâ âmy dearest apologies munchkin.â âdonât say that.â
ďżź
âlong time no seeâ. iwaizumi opened his now even bulkier arms to welcome issei into a hug. âi know man itâs been too long, you look good thoughâ.
the three of you started talking about life and such, what it was like for iwa in the states, if makki is yet to secure a job, and why on earth issei is employed in a funeral home. just normal things. by instinct you went to bring your glass to your lips to take a sip but you realised you were yet to buy yourself one. âiâm going to get a drink, what do you want âsei?â he bends down to where his ear is right by your mouth giving you a whiff of his expensive cologne you love. âhm? oh just the usual please babyâ. the way his deep voice went straight through you had you squeezing your thighs together before leaving to the bar.
singing softly and tapping your fingers to the beat of âSuper Freakâ as you waited to be served you couldnât help but amdire issei from afar. the way he dwarfed his tall friends and how when one of them told a joke, his broad shoudlers shook and that smile that crinkles his eyes appear. to onlookers you probably look like someone eyeing up a stranger. but to people who know you, you just look as- âhelplessly in love as always, (y/n)~â. the high, but low pitched voice broke you out of your gaze to turn around and see the host of the night. âtoru, my god you scared me!. where have you been all night?â. he matured since graduation, his once pale complexion now tan like iwaizumi and heâs also grown aswell. âoh you know just greeting my many fans.â you gave him a : âreally?â look at his high and mighty claim. âokay not really i was just caught up in old relatives stories. what about you i havenât seen you and your lovely lover all night eitherâ. you werenât suprised that heâs been caught up with family, he has been gone for a few years now. âweâve been with makki and iwa i just came to get a drink.â he didnât give you much time to breathe after you finished explaining to gasp out a reply, âtheyâre with you aswell?! well we need to fully reunite then. bartender!â. the way his eyebrows shot up his forehead had you doubling over in laughter. you got your drinks given to you and tried to steady them as oikawa pulled you through the crowd quickly.
the âfull reunionâ had been going on for about 2 hours now, moving from the table you all sat at, to the dance floor when a song you all knew came on. you were a bit tipsy yes but not enough to make your head and vision blurry, just enough to slightly stumble. issei was practically fine like the heavy weight he is. youâre once again, watching him from afar as heâs on the dancefloor with makki and oikawa. heâs lost his jacket due to the constant sweating from moving around, heâs now undone 3 buttons and rolled up his sleeves to his mid forearm.just the sight of his has your already wet panties starting to get soaked. âif youâre going to fuck him, please at least, for the sake of us, bring him to the roomâ. the interruption to your daydream made you suck in a gasp of air and turn around to see who startled you. iwaizumi was sitting with his cheek resting on his palm and looking at you with a bored expression. âso vulgar iwa! of course iâll bring him to the room, after a round in the toilets.â you said the last part with a smirk and let out a laugh at his response, âgod please no details i donât need to know! iâm still scarred from walking in on you to when we went to spainâ. âhuh? when did- oh yeaahhh! i remember that haha! that was funnyâ. you laughed with him at the memory coming back. âfor you it mightâve beenâ he shot back. the laugh you let out was enough to attract the curious three away from their dancing.
âoi oi oi whats so funny it has (y/n) busting a lung?â makki said looking at you holding your stomach. ânothing nothing donât worry just, an inside joke.â an offended looking oikawa butted in: âhah?! iwa and (y/n) have an inside joke without me? i feel betrayed. like i lost a part of myself.â he supported himself with an arm against the table in his attempt to be wounded. âiwa, whereâs akari?â.makki questioned after not seeing the mans date. âoh sheâs coming in a while, woman problems she saidâ. âwhat did i say hm?â. the said woman came up behind iwaizumi and placed her hands on his shoulders. she didnât let the man respond as she spotted you and moved to wrap her arms around your neck. âlet me see let me see!â you moved to grab her left hand and look at the shining diamond that adorned her ring finger. âgorgeous isnât it?â. she fawned at the sight of you admiring the ring âiâm jealous! i want oneâ you heard your own lover place the drinks down beside you and shot him a glare. you always do when someone asks you two about marriage. his eyes widened and he froze for a split second before relaxing and placing the glasses on the table. âgood things come to those who wait my dearâ. he said in a sultry voice while lifting your from your seat and sitting on it himself before placing you onto his lap. âshe must be fucking spectacular for waiting nearly a decade.â the whole table erupted in laughter at makkiâs comment and the two others nodding their heads in agreement.
the late night bled into the early morning and no one was giving signs of going to bed. but you just wantedâneededâ at least 1 round with issei, just to get rid of the ache between your thighs and then come back down and join everyone. the constant shuffling on his lap was enough to make him notice. âeverything ok?â. he whispered, putting his chin on your shoulder and stroking up and down your thigh. âhm? oh yeah just, want sumâthingâ âwhatâs something?â you looked over your shoulder at him then buried your face in his neck. âmâ not saying sâ embarrassingâ. he let out a short deep laugh at your mumbled response. âiâm sure itâs not that bad is it like, girl problems? oooh did you like get pussy blood on your outfit?â. the look of confusion and disgust that was written across your face gave him the impression heâs very wrong. âthen whatâs wrong? talk to me pretty girl.â âwanâ you âseiâ. it look him a second to realise what you meant and when he did his pants tightened ever so slightly. âoh you want me? well iâm right here doll, you have me right nowâ. his voice had noticeably gone down an octave and it sounded just as deep in your ear âyou know what i mean âsei stop teasinââ. you werenât in the mood to deal with his god awful teasing right now. âmâ not teasing baby isnât that what you mean?â. âissei stopâ you gave him a look and ground yourself on his growing erection making his grip on your thigh tighten. âyou really want it? fine then. weâre just gonna go to the room for while (y/n) has a uhh, woman problemsâ. issei said to the group while standing up, supporting you with a strong arm around your waist. âno problem man see you in a bitâ âhope your ok (y/n)!â.
as the pair of you were leaving the remaining four of the group all looked at each other. âwe all know what theyâre doing right?â makki said with a raised eyebrow. âof course, just hope they actually do come backâ iwa followed up knocking back one of the shots oikawa brought over.
the walk to your room for the night felt like it would never end. the long hallways looked as if they went on forever. finally, you reached the elevator and luckily people were getting out so you could just step in and press your floor button. you leaned against the left wall taking some of the pressure of your heels that were killing your feet all night. you couldnât relax for long because once you did issei came infront of you, towering your frame making you feel tiny. his hands snaked around behind you and gave one grope to your ass before moving back around to the front to dip under the waistband of your trousers. âissei! not in here fucking hell someone could walk inâ. you werenât to fond of someone seeing you in such a position. âshut up, your the one that dragged me away from our friends just so you could get fucked.â you werenât ready for his harsh words already and they shot down to where his hand was resting outside your underwear. ân-no! itâs not like thatâ. âoh? then what is it?â. met with silence he knew you didnât have an answer to his question. â âs what i thought, bet if i stick my hand in your panties iâll know the answer.â he didnât even wait for you to give him a response before he moved them to the side and slid one finger from your soaking hole to your throbbing clit. the tiny action had your knees slightly bucking and a quiet whimper leaving your sealed lips. â fuckinâ knew it, your dripping, just for me hm?â he covered his groan with sultry words to make you weak for the man. ây-yeah issei for you, only youâ. the loud ding of the elevator reaching your floor had him quickly withdrawing his hands from your pants and moving it to the small of your back to lead you out of the old couples way.
watching him scan the key card to let you in made you feel like you were stuck in time, the way his hands, adorned with thick and thin silver rings, made the key card look tiny, it had you wanting to reach about and grab his hand just to be holding it, it just felt like you had to. technically he was touching you but not holding your hand and bringing you into the room lovingly. no, his hand was in your hair pulling strands from the roots and pushing you through the door.
he sits himself on the edge of the bed and gives you a look that you know exactly what it means. not wanting him to get even more annoyed you quickly started to undress for him. not wanting to waste anymore time you now stood before him stark naked for his eyes to roam your figure. he flicked his head back, silently telling you: âcâmereâ. you walked over to him and placed your hands on his wide shoulders while his snaked to the back of your thighs and ass, slowly rubbing circles into the skin. âissei pleaseâ. your quiet voice made him look up and you but his hands kept moving. âhm? what do you want?â. if your being honest, you donât know what you want, what are you begging for? well him of course but if you say that heâs just tease you and keep asking you what you want. suddenly, a loud clap filled the once silent room, the force you felt on your right cheek and the loud noise was enough to knock you out of your thoughts and snap your head to the side. âi asked you a fucking question, you gonna answer me?â. âplease issei just, just-fuck!-do something please i need it!â. your high pitched whines were like music to his ears, heâd keep teasing nâ teasing you if he didnât want to go back downstairs so heâll just let you have your way.
standing up to his full height and pushing you down onto the bed he went to unbutton his dress shirt till you objected. âwait no, k-keep it on pleaseâ. he looked down to see your pleeding eyes looking into his lust filled own. âoh? you want me to keep it on? want me to fuck you like this huh? that what you want?â. âyes issei! yes please just, please please fuck me.â you spread your legs for him to see the way your pussy glistened in the yellowish light of the hotel room. he felt his cock jump slightly in his slacks so he pulled his belt through the loops and off, unbuttoning and zipping his trousers down to let him pull his aching cock out of its confinementâs. he heard you let out a soft moan and looked at you pinching and pulling at your nipples while wating for him. he snapped his eyes to the belt resting beside you and his hands moved quicker than his thoughts. grabbing both wrists without warning he places them above your head and looped it around till you couldnât move your wrists from where they were stuck. âhuh? w-why âsei wanna touch youâ. the harsh leather digging into your wrists pulled a whine from your throat, as well as the fact that you now couldnât touch your lover above you. âcant have you touching wants mine baby, need to teach you manners yeah?â.
he moved up on the bed to kneel in between your spread thighs. squirming and bucking your hips to try even feel the tip of his cock bump against you sensitive clit. âwait baby wait, need to prep you firstâ. the said soothingly while rubbing your thighs and pulling them onto his shoulders and leaving your bum in his lap, leaking pussy by his face ready for him to devour. âyes please please issei need it!â. not wasting anymore time he wrapped his arms around your thighs and used his hands to spread your outer lips and licked a thick stripe up your slit, stopping at your clit and sucking it harshly. the long awaited pleasure had you arching your back and ripping a loud moan from your chest. lifting your arms up you tried to grab his hair and whining when you remembered your hands were confined. separating his mouth from your bud with a pop, he gathered some salvia in his mouth before spitting it onto your twitching cunt. the action made your hips buck up and whine loudly again. âf-fuck âsei more need moreâ. humming at your lack of patience he dove back on latching onto your clit.ďżź listening to your request he brought his left hand from your thigh to up to your mouth. âsuckâ .
He knew how much you loved sucking on his fingers, and he wasnât going to lie and say he didnât enjoy it, because he fucking loves it too. The feeling of his thick fingers pushing into your mouth, aswell as the taste of his rings on your tongue made your eyes roll back and tighs tighten around his head. All too quickly, he pulled the digits from your mouth. He didnât wait long before he moved the hand to your pussy and pushed the two saliva soaked digits into you. âah, âsei fuck feels good baby, want moreâ. Humming at your soft moans and begs he added another finger along with the two already stretching your for his cock. It always felt so good, his thick fingers stretching you for him to fuck you dumb, showing he doesnât want you to be in too much of an unpleasant state to not enjoy yourself. You and him both knew he couldnât wait anymore longer, he was dying to just fuck you already. So he sped up his fingers and his mouth that was still sucking at your clit and dipping in beside his pistoning fingers occasionally. All you wanted to do was grip his hair and pull him even further into your pussy while you came for him, but all the belt was doing was digging into the skin of your wrists every time you tried to reach for him.
ââm gonna cum âm gonna cum, fuck iâm cumming issei!â was the warning you gave him before he felt your release on his tongue, he moved his fingers from inside you to replace them with his tongue and rub quick circles on your clit. Riding out your high until it got to much, you arched your back with kicking legs trying to get away from the man between your thighs. âissei no n-no âs too much please.â Finally he listened to you and rose up to sit back on his knees and stopped to admire the sight before him. You were layed out for his eyes, arms bound above your head leaving your bare body for his taking. He couldnât physically wait another second and went to strip himself off his clothes but remembered what you said. He knew it wasnât the best idea to stay in his suit as you still had to go back downstairs and he was already sweating through it, but seeing your wide, hungry eyes looking up at him made him resort to just undoing his pants just enough to free his hard cock.
Once he did he could hear the faint whine you let out at the sight of him and he looked to see your eyebrows knitted and a hungry gaze on his cock. âwhats wrong pretty girl? You want my cock that bad?â he knew his teasing words were itching at your skin all night and he certainly wasnât stopping them any time soon. âyes âsei yeah, wanâ your big cock so bad, please fuck me now,â he hummed at your begging, silently letting you know it wasnât that convincing. Whinging for a short second, you then lifted your legs up and as far back as you could without the aid of your hands, so you could show how badly you wanted him. The way the light reflected off your shining juices that covered your cunt had the man gulping down the lump in his throat. Now he knew he couldnât wait any more, with that he reached out to grab at your thighs and pull you towards him, flip you over and push on your back to arch your ass towards him.
Usually, you loved this position-but tonight all you wanted to do was to touch, to look at issei, first the belt and now this position prevented both of those desires. You were about to protest and beg for him to turn you back over and undo the restraints, but you felt the head of his clock running up your slit and catching your sensitive clit. Just the small action had a loud whine coming from you and pushing your hips back to meet him. Normally he would let you but tonight he gripped a hip with one hand and the other came dawn to slap your right cheek. Of course you couldnât see his hand reading back, so when you felt his calloused hand met the smooth skin of your ass it caused you to jump and let out a sob into the white sheets beneath you.
âissei please hurry please!â for the umpteenth time tonight more begs left your mouth for him to do something, anything to please the ache.
His strong hand that was on your hip reached up to twist in your hair and pull you do your back was armed against his chest. âI donât recall you being in charge, do you?â his deep voice went straight through you, his mouth right against your ear so you could feel his laboured breathing. You shook your head snd whispered out a small ânoâ. knowing heâs wouldnât be happy with the sorry excuse of a response you clenched your eyes shut and waited for what heâd do next. You waited, Expecting a slap to your ass- or your face again but when nothing came you opened your eyes again and seen him still looking over your shoulder. âis that so? Glad to see weâre on the same page then.â You were surprised to say the least, normally when you donât answer him probably, heâd give a short quick punishment. But he seemed a bit too compliant. As if you knew, he let go of your hair and pushed you back down but moved off the bed to walk around to the side. Confused, you looked up to the tall man towering over you. Heâd grabbed your upper arm and man handed you while he moved to sit up against the headboard. Planting you down in his lap he didnât give you a as second before he was lifting your hips to finally push his cock into you.
The feeling your craved all night, the slight pain of the stretch that came with sinking onto his thick cock was delicious. Your mouth fell open on its own, eyes rolled back against your will, the pure feeling of him stuffing your cunt was all you needed and more. youâd fallen into his chest from the lack of support by your belt bound arms and the feeling of his fingers dancing up and down your spine brought you back down from the high he brought just by pushing his cock in. âfuck âs always so tight angel,â even he was feeling the heavy weight of pleasure already, the feeling of your gummy walls sucking him in and barely allowing him to move. âjusâ for you âsei, âs tight just for you,â it might be the alcohol slurring you words but you swore you sobered up ages ago, now just drunk on his cock and that only.
Issei was quickly getting impatient with how long you were sitting on his lap just trembling and face buried in his shoulder. Quick and sharp he landed a slap on your ass that shook you of of the cock drunk daze. âcâmon angel bounce on my cock for me,â his deep voice rung out in your empty head and made your legs move on their own accord, trying to get the both of you to the awaiting high you needed.
The lewd sound of skin slapping, high pitched moans and strained grunts filled the room and any passers could probably know whatâs going down.
It felt like your legs were about to give out from under you at any given second but the pure pleasure and want for him overshadowed the pains in your knees. âfuck issei he-help need help please,â you knew you wouldnât be able to keep riding him with just your own strength- and he knew to, it was just a matter of how long it took till you were pleading for him to start helping. âyeah, you want my help doll? Want me to fuck into this cunt nâ make you cum nice and hard?â Even just his words could be enough to make you cum on the spot. âmmh need you âsei please wanna cum now!â he also knew youâd start getting bratty when heâd hold off on fucking you and teasing for too long. With it, he planted his heels into the white sheets and placed his hands on the bottom of your ass, raising you off his hips just a tad. When he started thrusting up into your pussy with all the strength he could you swore it nearly had you falling out of consciousness. The only indication for him that your still awake his the moans growing even louder right by his ear.
Your waiting friends could probably hear you downstairs with how loud you were now. Even issei found himself letting his grunts, groans and a small moan slip out without biting them back.
âIssei âs so good! Do-donât stop please mâ gonna cum, please let me cum daddy!â hearing you beg for him and your pussy getting tighter around his cock was enough to make him pause and pull you off him onto your back, situating himself to lean back on his thighs and spread you legs outwards for him to slip back in and keep them out there. âShit baby, getting all tight for daddy hm?â this far in you barely could respond to your lover, only answering him with a quick nod of you head and moans rising an octave.
Issei moved his hands closer to your ankle when he sped his hips up, and when he did he felt the cold metal of the anklet he gifted you with a small âiâ resting in the middle. Feeling the jewellery he now needed to hear it jingle by his ear, a small reminder that heâs yours and youâre his. He stopped for a short second, only to move your legs together and kept them there with his arms, one palm going to wrap around your neck. âSaid you were gonna cum for me angel, mâ waiting to see you fall apart nice nâ pretty,â âyeah issei âm so close, so fucking close, please move I wanna cum!â quietly he chuckled before pushing his hips to meet yours more feverishly than any times tonight.
It was a sight any man or woman alike would die to see, your eyes rolled back, mouth wide with your tongue falling out and one small hand gripping at his bicep while the other was wrapped around his wrist that was constricting your breathing.
Truthfully you could barely utter a word out, and issei always told you to tell him when your about to cum. The only thing you could do before it was close to crashing down on you was to slap at his bicep that your nails were once digging crescent moons into. âHm? You gonna cum? Such a good girl for telling me, play with your clit while you cum nâ then daddys gonna fill this sweet pussy up.â
Before he could even finish talking your hand found its way to your aching clit and used the juices flowing from you to rub the little button quickly. It didnât last long before your body froze up and then started shaking in isseiâs hold. The high youâve been wanting all night took over your body with such force it made tears spill from the corner of your eyes, and juices spray out of your cunt, soaking isseiâs cock and suit pants.
The mess was the least of isseiâs worries, all he cared about was watching you fall apart and then filling you up with his own cum. âshit, fuck thatâs it baby so fucking perfect cumming for me, Makinâ such a mess. Gonna cum inside and fill this cunt up, you want that angel?â he knew you were still recoveringâmaybe even still cumming. But he didnât expect a verbal answer until one was slurred out of your mouth. âmmh please fill me up âsei wanâ be full of cumâ He couldnât even warn you he was cumming, frankly because his own body didnât warn him. His orgasm hitting like a ton of bricks and pulling gorgeous sounds from his chest. âfuck fuck, (y/n) thatâs it, so goodâfuckâsuch a good girlâ
Shortly after both of your highs subsided, issei collapsed onto the mattress by your side. âyâ okay baby? you did so good, so proud of youâ he let his hand softly run up and down the expense of your spine when you moved to lay your head on his chest. âmmhh, mâ tired but i still wanna go back downstairs.â Issei couldnât help the laugh that bubbled out, growing louder when you sat up and hit his chest telling him to stop.
âiâm sorry, iâm sorry please. Let me get you cleaned up and just, dispose of the evidence then we can head down âkay?â Carrying you the short walk to the bathroom he set you down on the toilet leaving you to your own business before wiping your body down with a damp wash cloth. âyou able to get dressed yourself?â nodding at his question he placed a peck on the thigh he was leaning on then lifted himself to your lips.
After getting yourself back into your outfit you went to the mirror the wall to start fixing your hair and make up. The loud noise of a, hairdryer?, made you jump slightly and look to the bathroom through the mirror. what you saw was issei on his hunkers only in his dress shirt and boxers, other clothing no where to be seen. You shook your head in confusion and left him to whatever he could be doing. Once you were all done up again issei was still at it with the hair dryer, making your confusion grow.
âissei what the fuck are you doi-â the sight of your longtime boyfriend crouched over in just his boxers and a button up, blow drying his cum soaked dress pants made you double over in laughter harder than it shouldâve. âOh yeah no, go ahead, laugh at me. If it was you iâd still be the one down here drying your pants,â he watched you with a scowl on his face, not amused at how funny you were finding the current situation. âbut they arenât mine, theyâre yours silly,â âeh duh, youâre the one that wouldnât let me take them off. thatâs it, you set me up! Making me the laughing stock of the night.â His pure idiotic reasoning made you laugh even more and him sulk even harder. âplease stop I need to go before I piss myselfâ leaving him to his dilemma tears in your eyes to put your shoes on. âhold on just a second, your gonna leave without me?â he rushed up and out of the bathroom with his trousers in hand and the other on his hip, as if he was a mother scolding their child. âwell unless your ready then yeahâ turning his head with a scoff he retreated back to the bathroom while shouting out to you. âthe absolute betrayal iâm facing, I give you everything and you leave like that. iâm not just some hooker yâknowâ
By the time he got you to help him dry his pantsâand got you to stop laughingâthe pair of you weâre finally able to head back down to the party hand in hand, trying to seem as unsuspicious as possible. ânow remember your meant to be sick, so donât go downing shots the minute we get there,â â easy for you to say.â
âand they return! You feelinâ better now (y/n)?â the first to greet you was makki, of course even drunker than when you left. In fact every one was when you had walked in you seen iwa and his fiancĂŠe dancing together out on the floor and oikawa was currently face down on the table looking lifeless. âhaah?! (y/n) is back?!â well âwasâ looking lifeless. âiâm here too yâknowâ issei grumbled before taking a seat beside his best friend. â(y/n) letâs go get drinks!â with no time to answer oikawa pulled you off and over to the bar.
âwas there a little spillage in the village up there, or are you just very happy to see me,â makki lowly said to issei while sipping his jaeger bomb. âshut your mouth or I swear iâll shut it for you and shove it where the sun doesnât shine,â âooh kinky.â

An employee in the marketing department of a large company, your days are filled with poorly worded emails, unrealistic deadlines, and passive aggressive friendly reminders from your superiors. On a particularly awful afternoon, a chance encounter with a coworker from the programming department down the hall is the first thing to make you smile in weeks.
But the more you uncover about Yang Jungwon and his mysterious injuries, flimsy excuses, and always occupied Friday nights, the more you begin to realize that you really donât know him at all.

PART TWO
â.Ë⥠࣪ Ëâ.Ë⥠࣪ Ëâ.Ë⥠࣪ Ë
Itâs been a while since you felt anything but dread opening your work inbox.Â
Monday morning, however, the first message that greets you is a reminder of a time when you did. When you used to keep your email tab open just in the hopes that a certain programmer would send you messages about a jammed printer for you to reread a dozen times.Â
This time, though, excitement is the last thing you feel. Itâs curiosity, more than anything, combined with an urgent need to know what the hell happened between your date and your coworker, that has you clicking on the message.Â
From: yangj@vesselsoft.coÂ
Subject: Printer Issue
Good morning, ___.Â
I hope this message finds you well. I am currently trying to resolve an ongoing issue with the workroom printer and was hoping you would be able to provide some input at your earliest convenience.Â
Thank you in advance,Â
Jungwon
Part of you wants to archive the message without responding and let him simmer in your rejection.Â
But spite has never held much weight against curiosity, and despite your better judgment, you soon find yourself walking towards the shared workroom.Â
As expected, itâs already occupied. This time, however, Jungwon is leaning against the wall, arms crossed over his chest. The printer, just as you suspected, is in perfect working order.Â
Thereâs a fresh bruise on his forehead, and this time, you donât wonder where itâs from. It makes sense now. The bruises on his knuckles. The cut on his cheekbone. His seemingly intimate knowledge of head injuries that one fateful Monday afternoon he found you in this very room.Â
Theyâre all the result of his hidden hobby, you suppose.Â
As soon as you enter, some of the rigidity seeps out of his stance. Immediately, his arms fall to his sides, expression softening. â___,â he whispers, like he canât quite believe you actually came.Â
Where he softens, however, you cage up.Â
âYou have one minute,â you tell him.Â
âOne minute?â He echoes, brow creasing in confusion.Â
âOne minute to explain what happened Saturday night.â
Jungwon sighs. âIâm sorry. Really, I⌠I shouldnât have reacted like that.â
You donât say anything. An apology is appreciated, yes, but itâs not an explanation.Â
With your silence, Jungwon continues, âI was just⌠caught off guard. I didnât expect to see you there, and especially not with him.â
He pauses for a moment, biting at his lower lip. âLook, ___. I know it probably isnât my place, but I donât think heâs being honest with you. Jay isnât the person that you think he is, andââ
Your scoff cuts through his words, stopping him in his tracks. âThatâs funny,â you interrupt. But humor is the last thing on your mind. âHe said the exact same thing about you, you know. But it has to be bullshit. I mean, what could have possibly happened in middle school that two adults with jobs are still hung up on a decade later?â
Jungwonâs lips part in surprise. âHe told you about middle school?â
âWhy?â you prod. âIs there something to know?â
But now youâre at a stalemate, neither of you willing to disclose what exactly you know.Â
After another beat, Jungwon sighs. âLook, Iâm not trying to tell you what to doââ
âCould have fooled me.â
âBut I just want you to be careful, okay? Itâs⌠itâs important to me that youâre safe.â
âSafe?â You scoff. âIt was a boxing gym. I donât know why youâre acting like I was trying to push my way into the ring with you.â
âYou donât get itââ
âNo.â You throw your hands in exasperation. âI donât get it. But youâre not explaining it to me. Youâre just being evasive and acting like Iâm the one in the wrong. So unless you actually have something of substance to say, Iâm done having this conversation.â
â____âŚâÂ
Already halfway to the exit, the sound of your name is lost on you. Itâs bad enough that Jay has yet to reach out to you since last night. You absolutely do not need Jungwon bringing this issue into the office as well.Â
As if on cue, your phone dings with an incoming message.Â
Half expecting to see a virtual string of apologies from your coworker, youâre mildly surprised to see a different name instead.Â
You were right about the apologies, though.Â
Jay: Iâm sorry about last night. You were right about deserving an explanation and I want to give you one. I think this is a conversation we should have in person. Are you free Friday night for dinner?
Friday night. Two nights from now. Itâs soon enough that you wonât have to stew in resentment, but will give you both the time and space you need to think.Â
It doesnât take you long to consider, but you do wait another long minute before giving him the satisfaction of responding.Â
You: Iâll plan on Friday.
âŚ..
Friday morning comes with a vengeance.Â
Already teeming with nervous energy at the prospect of your upcoming date with Jay and the conversation that is sure to ensue, youâre a bit of a mess by the time you arrive at work.Â
Hair windswept, outfit mismatched, lipstick slightly smudged, you already know youâre in for a long day at the office.Â
But when you arrive at your desk, you find something that softens the blow, just a bit.Â
Grace, ever the instigator, is already learning over your cubicle by the time you notice it.Â
âWhew,â she whistles appreciatively. âSomeoneâs pulling out all the stops.â
And sheâs kind of right. The bouquet sitting front and center on your desk is massive. Overflowing with seasonal flowers that already emit a pleasant fragrance even from where you stand. The vase itself itâs gorgeous, too.Â
Imbued with a myriad of colors, it reminds you a bit of a stained glass window on a sunny afternoon.Â
Reaching for the small note tucked at the top, you open the envelope with slightly shaky fingers.Â
 ___, it reads.Â
I wish I had more to give you than an apology, but Iâve been told that flowers are a sure thing when it comes to brightening someoneâs day. I hope these are able to do that for you.Â
â J
Frowning, you read it once. Twice.Â
Jay has already apologized for the incident from a couple of nights ago, and the timing of this second apology seems odd, given your plans for tonight.Â
Youâre left to stand in your own confusion for a moment longer before a text message vibrates your phone in your pocket.Â
Reaching for it, the flowers suddenly start to make a lot more sense.Â
Jay: I am so sorry, but I have to reschedule our plans for tonight. It completely slipped my mind, but my sisterâs baby shower is tomorrow morning, and Iâve been voluntold to help set it up. I promise to let you know as soon as I can when Iâll be available
Jay: And again, I am so, so sorry
Sighing, you put your phone back in your bag. You canât blame him. Not really. His sisterâs baby shower is undoubtedly an important event, even if the timing is rather unfortunate for you.Â
Grace, blissfully unaware of your inner turmoil, is still gushing about your flowers. Turning to you, she wiggles her eyebrows suggestively. âSo, what are those for? Got a hot date this weekend?â
You sigh, recently canceled plans still dampening your mood. Deciding thereâs no harm in telling Grace your woes, you say, âI wish. Jay just had to cancel on me for tonight.â
âNo.â Grace gasps. If you didnât know any better, youâd think she was personally affronted. âHe better have had a good excuse.â
âHe did,â you admit. Unlike someone you know. âFamily stuff.â
âAh,â Grace nods. âI suppose thatâs acceptable. Have you rescheduled?â
Frowning at the message you have yet to answer, you shake your head. âNot yet.â
âMm,â she hums, sensing your disappointment. âIâm sure something just came up at work, and heâll get back to you soon.âÂ
âYeah,â you nod hollowly. âIâm sure he will.â
You: I understand. Is there any chance we could meet Saturday evening or afternoon? Itâs important to me that we talk about it soon.
Itâs not as if you expect an immediate response. Like you, Jay is probably at work for the day. Busy and drowning in deadlines and assignments. Maybe even stuck in a meeting.Â
But thirty minutes pass. And then an hour. Two.Â
And your message is still completely unanswered.Â
The more time that passes, the harder it becomes to shake the funny feeling that starts to build in your gut. It builds and builds and builds, all the way until closing time.Â
And Jay still hasnât texted you back.Â
Thatâs annoying enough all on its own, but thereâs something else that just isnât adding up.Â
You canât quite put your finger on it, the thing thatâs bothering you so much. But even as you make your way towards after clocking out for the day, something still doesnât sit right with you. Opening your message thread again, you reread Jayâs last text.Â
Jay: ⌠my sisterâs baby shower is tomorrow morning, and Iâve been voluntold to help set it up.Â
Sisterâs baby shower.Â
Thatâs whatâs been bothering you. Because unless Jayâs sister is just finishing the shortest known pregnancy in human history, heâs lying to you.Â
You remember it now. The first time Grace mentioned Jay to you. She had just seen him for the first time since he moved back home.Â
At his older sisterâs baby shower.Â
Sitting in your car, you scoff out loud in disbelief. The ice he treads on has been dangerously thin since your run in with Jungwon at the boxing gym, and he had the audacity to lie?Â
Part of you wants to catch him in it. For your own confirmation and for the satisfaction of not letting him get away with trying to pull a fast one on you. But you need an excuse. Some reason to seek him out and find him where he isnât supposed to be.Â
Racking your brain, you try to think of a plausible explanation for turning up at his house tonight.Â
Still sitting in the parking lot, a car turns past you, headlights shining in through your windshield in a way that makes you squint.Â
In a way that reflects off of the tiny piece of metal jammed in the crevice next to your cupholder. Frowning, you reach down, tugging at it until itâs freed from its confines.Â
Youâre not sure what divine forces are working in your favor, but you make a mental note to properly thank them later. Because clutched between your fingers is Jayâs missing ring. The one that heâs been looking for since he messaged you about it last week.Â
Itâs perfect, you think. An absolutely perfect excuse to drop by his house, even if you should be under the impression that heâs not there at the moment.Â
Turning the piece of jewelry between your fingers, your eyes catch on an inscription on the inner band. Squinting, you can just make it out.Â
2013.11.13 King Pen
Youâre pretty sure the numbers are a date. November 13, 2013, to be exact. But King Pen. You have no idea what that is.Â
It sounds like it could be related to boxing, maybe. Pulling out your phone, you do a quick online search.Â
The results that flood your screen are mostly generic, nothing that gives you any real leads. You try a few different search combinations, including the date and finally, the name of your city.Â
That does send an old article to the top of your search results. Something published in a local newspaper in 2007.Â
Clicking on the link, you scan the article for anything relevant.Â
Samuel Kang, one line towards the beginning reads, shared his plans to open a boxing gym right here in the city. Although there are other similar gyms in nearby towns, this would be the first gymnasium dedicated solely to boxing in the area.Â
You skip down a few more lines.Â
When asked if he knows what heâd like to call his project, Kang just smiles and nods his head. âKing Pen,â he tells us. âI plan to call it King Pen.â
You frown. Your earlier search is proof enough that King Pen never came to fruition. As a final attempt at getting some answers, you type Samuel Kang into the search bar instead.Â
This time, the first article that pops up does carry an air of familiarity. Clicking on it, you confirm your suspicion.Â
Samuel Kang, as it turns out, never opened a boxing gym called King Pen. But he did open one called Kangâs Gym.Â
Looking through the photo gallery, the weightlifting equipment appears to have been in much better shape in 2008 than it was a couple of weeks ago. But even though the paint was still bright and the training pads were fully intact, it is undoubtedly the same exact gym.Â
Thereâs no reason for you to go there now. If anything, you should just drive straight to Jayâs house. But something still doesn't sit right with you.Â
Why does Jayâs ring say King Pen instead of Kangâs Gym? Especially since itâs dated five whole years after the gym opened under its actual name.Â
Besides, the gym is on your way to Jayâs apartment. If anything, itâs just a quick pit stop. A confirmation that youâre not going crazy.Â
Putting your car in drive, you set the ring on your passenger seat and drive out of the parking lot.Â
Itâs already dark by the time youâre pulling into Kangâs Gym. Switching your car off, you remove your key from the ignition.Â
Your automatic headlights still illuminate the strangely full parking lot in front of you. Frowning, you wonder why so many people are here. Even the night that you came with Jay, the parking lot wasnât nearly this full, and yet, most of the boxing rings inside were occupied.Â
Stepping out of your car, you close the door behind you softly. Youâre not sure why youâre overcome with the urge to tiptoe. Itâs not like you need to sneak around. Youâre not doing anything wrong, after all.Â
But the whole thing feels strange, has you on edge. You make it only a few steps before your eyes land on a familiar car.Â
âSisterâs baby shower, my ass,â you whisper out loud to no one. Unless she decided to celebrate her new child at a run down boxing gym, Jay is absolutely lying to you. Because thatâs his sleek black car, right in front of you. Youâd recognize it anywhere.Â
And a few rows down, you confirm your other suspicion. Youâve never seen him drive it, but you have seen that particular navy blue SUV in the office parking garage before. Jungwon. Youâre sure itâs him.Â
For a moment, you hesitate. It might be easier, cleaner, to just take a picture of Jayâs car and send it to him. After all, that would get your point across clearly enough. Especially if you block him afterwards.Â
But heâs been evasive about everything related to this place since he first brought you here. And heâs not the only one.Â
Eyes falling to Jungwonâs car, you decide that catching Jay in a lie isnât the only thing you want to do tonight.Â
You want answers.Â
So the picture you take of Jayâs car remains unsent for now. Instead, you hike your bag a little further up your shoulder and continue walking in the direction of the gym.Â
Nearing the door, you brace yourself to be met with the large crowd that surely waits inside. Judging from the parking lot, this place must be near full capacity. But as you push through the unlocked door, the gym is completely and entirely empty.Â
Eerily so.Â
All around you, workout equipment and boxing rings sit untouched, devoid of life. There isnât so much as a sound to disturb the uncanny silence.Â
Frowning, your brow creases in deep confusion. Nothing about this makes any sense.Â
But you didnât come all the way here to add to your pile of questions. Instead, you push forward, past the rows of boxing rings towards the locker room where Jay left his bag a handful of nights ago.Â
It feels wrong to open the menâs locker room. But if no one is here, then surely it couldnât hurt. Warily, you start to crack open the door, inch by inch.Â
The locker room, to your unending puzzlement, is just as empty as the rest of the gym.Â
Youâre about to turn back to search the rest of the gym when you notice it. Just across from you, behind the first set of empty lockers. Thereâs another door.Â
Itâs probably nothing, you tell yourself, even as your feet carry you closer and closer. It probably just leads to a storage closet or a boiler room orâ
Pushing the door open, the first thing youâre met with is sound.Â
Voices. Loud voices. Lots and lots of them. In your surprise, you drop the door, and it clicks shut again.Â
Immediately, the sound stops. Plunged in silence again, itâs all you can do to not gasp.Â
Soundproof, you realize. Itâs soundproof. And not just the locker room. The entire gym was dead silent until you opened this door.
This time, when you push it open, you expect the cacophonous cheers that greet you. Youâre still too far away to make out what anyone is saying. Right now, it all blends into a wall of sound.Â
Vision is of little help, too. The only thing you see when you open the door is a staircase. In the low light, all you can tell is that it leads down.Â
Hoping that youâre not currently making the stupidest decision of your life, you place one tentative foot on the first step. Follow it with your other foot. And then you let the door close behind you, plunging you into complete darkness.Â
Immediately, a surge of panic claws at your throat. The lack of light, combined with the sheer volume of cheers and shouts, is enough to have you crawling in your skin.Â
Reaching blindly for the door handle behind you, you decide that sending Jay a picture of his car will have to be satisfying enough. But no matter how hard you try to twist the doorknob, it wonât budge.Â
No. No.Â
Youâre trapped. Effectively locked in.Â
As the reality of the situation sinks in, you feel the pit of your stomach begin to drop.Â
Part of you wants to just stay in place, wait for whateverâs going on to end and hope that a stroke of luck will set you free. But then another thought occurs to you.Â
What if this is the only entrance?
You donât know how many people are down there, but if the sound and parking lot are anything to go by, itâs a lot.Â
Youâre sure that Jay and Jungwon are among them, but stillâŚ
Both of their warnings start to come back to you.
âHeâs not who you think he isâŚâ
âI just want you to be carefulâŚâ
âItâs important to me that youâre safeâŚâ
Is this what they were talking about? Is this why Jungwon was so angry with Jay for bringing you here? Not because he didnât want you to see a boxing gym, but because thatâs not what this place is at all?
The more you mull it over, the more it starts to make sense.Â
Still submerged in darkness, you decide that the only way youâll confirm anything is by moving forward. Slowly, you reach for your phone, turning the flashlight on its lowest setting.Â
Keeping it clutched in your hands in case you need to shut it off at a momentâs notice, you begin to walk, descending down the staircase.Â
After two flights on uneven steps, you start to see a light in the distance, a clue that youâre getting closer. And with every step you take, the voices only get louder and louder.Â
On the third landing, youâre given two choices: continue down the stairs or move into a hallway that stretches to your left. Deciding that staying as far away from the crowd as you can is likely your best option, you opt for the hallway.Â
Youâve barely walked a few feet when you nearly stumble into a wall. Itâs not the end though â just a corner. The light from your phone confirms that the hallway takes a sharp turn.Â
Following it, you come to another door. This time, youâre even more hesitant. There could be people on the other side.Â
Pressing your ear against it, the only thing you hear is the same scrambled shouting, the same boisterous crowd. Itâs hard to tell for certain, but you donât hear anything that makes you think thereâs someone waiting on the other side.Â
Slowly, carefully, you begin to open the door.Â
The sudden light is nearly blinding. It takes your eyes a moment to adjust, but once they do, your mouth drops open.Â
You were right, thankfully. The small room you enter is mercifully empty.Â
But itâs also lined with windows that give you a direct view into the room one level beneath you. Jaw dropping, you take in the scene below.Â
There must be at least five hundred people crammed into the stands that encircle the room. All of them are on their feet, shouting jeers and cheering with equal fervor.Â
And in the center of it all is a boxing ring. On the side that faces you, bold letters give it a name:
King Pen.
Itâs empty for now, but youâre only left wondering for another handful of seconds before a middle aged man steps into the center, microphone in hand. With an open palm, he gestures towards the crowd, commanding them to listen.Â
Whoever he is, he holds weight here. With the flick of his hand, literally, the room all but falls silent.Â
âLadies and gentlemen,â he says into the microphone. âNext up is the fight weâve all been waiting for.â
He pauses for a moment as more cheers and shouts fill the room.Â
âI hope your bets are placed, because these two always manage to surprise us. Please welcome our first challenger to the ring. Back to the city for the first time in years, itâs Jaan!â
But itâs not Jaan. Or at least, itâs not someone you know as Jaan.Â
No, itâs Jay. The same Jay that took you to an art exhibition and convinced you to try sweet coffee instead of your usual bitter black. The same Jay that flirts with you over text and whispers sweet nothings in your ear after a long day of work.Â
The same Jay that lied to you about why he had to cancel your date tonight.Â
The crowd has barely died down when the man presses on, âAnd your second challenger, the reigning champion⌠Please give your warmest welcome for Jakah!âÂ
The alias booms around you, echoing through the room. And of course itâs him. Of course Jakah, the reigning champion, is someone you used to think would have trouble hurting a fly.Â
Someone you thought embodied gentleness, patience, with every ounce of his being.Â
But no matter how badly you want to deny it, no matter how much the cognitive dissonance wars inside your brain, itâs him.Â
Itâs Jungwon who enters from the other side of the ring.Â
âNow, remember,â the man addresses the audience again. âCheer for your favorite. Scream at his opponent. And donât forget our golden rule: in the Kingâs Pen,â he begins.Â
âAnything goes,â the audience shouts back in unison.Â
Anything? Your heart falls from your throat to the pit of your stomach. As if it wasnât bad enough that Jay is here, that he lied to you, that heâs fighting Jungwon.Â
Taking a closer look at the ring beneath you, you notice the odd, rust colored stains that nearly cover it.Â
Blood, you realize after a sickening moment. The ring is covered in blood stains.Â
It makes sense, suddenly, why King Pen didnât appear in any search results. Why this entire place is completely soundproofed. Why Jungwon wanted you to stay far, far away.Â
This isnât a sparring match. Itâs a duel.Â
One where, like the audience just affirmed, anything goes.Â
As the man steps out from the center of the ring, Jay and Jungwon start to circle each other, fists raised in anticipation.Â
Even from a distance, you can see the tight coil of muscle in their shoulders, the way their bodies prepare for the inevitable fight.Â
âSay it with me now, folks,â the man booms, now standing on the side of the ring.Â
âThree.â Jayâs eyes narrow, fists rising an inch higher.
âTwo.â Jungwon flicks a stray strand of hair out of his eyes.Â
âOne.â You feel your last bit of breath whoosh out from your lungs.Â
âFight.â
Itâs like a dance, you think. A sickening, deadly dance that you canât look away from no matter how much you want to.Â
Despite your lack of knowledge, it quickly becomes apparent to you why this is the main event of the evening.Â
Where Jay is sheer, brutal strength, Jungwon is all evasion. He moves with the agility of an athlete, the lightness of a dancer.Â
He makes it look easy, the way he ducks beneath carefully timed swings and always seems to predict what Jay will do next.Â
But even dancers stumble sometimes.Â
You canât help it, the gasp that slips out when one of Jayâs punches lands true. You watch, horrified, as Jungwon staggers backwards, adding to the crimson stains on the floor of the ring.Â
Slightly dazed, he brings the back of his palm to the broken skin along his cheekbone, assessing the damage. When he brings it in front of his face, it comes back red.Â
Jay takes no pity on his opponent. Following his retreat, he aims for another bruising blow. This one hits Jungwon just beneath the ribs. Echoes around the makeshift stadium with a dull thud you hear even from your hiding place.Â
Again, Jungwonâs sure steps falter.Â
The rise and fall of his chest is rapid as he struggles to catch his breath. But when he looks up again, thereâs a fire in his eyes. Pure, unadulterated hatred that permeates the scant distance between him and his rival and sends a shiver down the length of your spine.Â
Not one to take things lying down, Jungwon takes advantage of Jayâs momentary lapse in focus.Â
His fist connects with the bridge of Jayâs nose with a sickening crunch. Head falling backward, the immediate flow of blood is gruesome. It drip down his chin, landing on the floor beneath him in an arrhythmic pattern.Â
Thereâs little grace to it now. Gone are the remaining fragments of inhibition as both boys put away their judgment and leave the rest to instinct.Â
Itâs messy, sloppy, angry.Â
Theyâre so close; itâs hard to tell which blows come from who. Hard to tell whose wounds are multiplying faster, whose blood is falling more freely.Â
And then, just when you think you canât stomach watching any longer, itâs done.Â
Itâs so fast. You canât quite be sure how it happens. But one second, both boys are standing, and the next, Jay is flat on his back, Jungwon hovering above him.Â
Still, the crowd is silent. Everyoneâs eyes are on the ring.Â
Jay is down. Trapped beneath his opponent, itâs clear to you who the victory is. But then you remember the words the crowd chanted at the beginning of the fight.Â
Anything goes.Â
Your stomach twists with nausea.Â
Even from here, you can see the tension that still strains the muscles along Jungwonâs back. The rigidity of his shoulders.Â
For a moment, you think heâs going to do it. To strike again, even though victory is already in his hands.Â
You see his lips move with words you canât hear. Beneath him, Jay remains stoic. Thereâs still fight in his eyes, even if itâs been drained from his body.Â
Jungwonâs mouth moves again.Â
This time, Jay nods. Itâs a tiny movement, barely perceptible. But itâs enough.Â
With an agitated flair, Jungwon stands again.Â
Blood is still dripping from his face, his knuckles. Sweat covers his body, drenches his hair.Â
Heâs won, yes, but the expression on his features is not one of satisfaction.Â
ARound him, the audience begins to boo, throwing jeers and insults like extra change. They were hoping for more than a fight. They were hoping for cruelty Jungwon isnât willing to give.Â
Without a second glance back, he turns and leaves the ring.Â
Still reeling, you nearly jump out of your skin when the handle on the door to your room begins to turn.Â
If you had a stronger grip on your sense of logic, you would do something. Try to hide. Scramble to think of an excuse for your presence.Â
The door opens before you do any of it.Â
âOh,â Heeseung says, eyes widening as he finds the room already occupied. And then it registers with him who exactly is already occupying said room. âOh,â he repeats. âHe is not going to be happy about this.â
âŚ..
Heeseungâs fist rings out against the door in three sharp raps. For a moment, silence is the only response. And thenâ
âIâm not in the mood.â
âUh,â Heeseung glances at you sideways. âI think you should open the door anyway.âÂ
âIâm serious.â Jungwonâs voice is pure ire. âIâm not doing this with you right now, Heeseung.â
âOkay,â Heeseung concedes. âBut I really still think you should open theââ
âWhat?â
Jungwonâs glare lands on his friend before his gaze slides to you. Immediately, his features slacken in surprise. âOh.â
And itâs stupid, foolish, naive. But the first thing you feel when you see him standing on his own two feet is pure, unadulterated relief.Â
Heâs injured. Itâs obvious from the wounds that line his face and the way his breath is still shallow in his chest. But heâs okay.Â
Heâs here and heâs in front of you and heâs okay.Â
âYeah,â Heeseung repeats. âLike I said, I think you shouldââ
âGo away.â
âWhat?â Heeseung balks. âWhere am I supposed toââ
âAway,â Jungwon reiterates, eyes still locked on you.Â
Heeseung is sulking, but he follows Jungwonâs command regardless. And then itâs just the two of you.Â
You both speak at the same time, near identical questions overlapping with one another.Â
âWhat the hell are you doing?â
âWhy are you here?â
A beat of silence passes. Another.Â
As if he is suddenly remembering your surroundings, Jungwon looks around you, a new urgency in his gaze. You donât know what kind of consequences places like this carry, but common sense tells you itâs best that youâre not seen. âCome in,â he opens the door a bit wider, giving you space to enter.Â
You shouldnât. He hasnât lied to you, not exactly, but itâs not like heâs been particularly honest either.Â
And coworkers donât owe you the truth or the nitty gritty details of their lives, but itâs been a long time since Jungwon and you treated one another like coworkers. No matter what you want to call it, the relationship that youâve built between conversations in the workroom and email threads and kind gestures in the office feels a lot more like friendship. Or at the very least some iteration of it.Â
So youâre not mad at him for keeping this from you, not really.Â
But other emotions are swirling in your gut, and you donât know what to do with them. Most of all, youâre worried. For his safety. For his wellbeing. For him.Â
Obeying his command, you step inside the small room. You hear the door click shut behind you.Â
Looking around, there isnât much to see. Itâs a locker room, essentially, designed for one person. Thereâs a counter to your left with a small first aid kit and a chair in the far corner of the room.Â
A gym bag, Jungwonâs you assume, rests next to it.Â
And, of course, thereâs the two of you.Â
Glancing up, you take a look at him. A long, real look.Â
Heâs wearing the same clothes he entered the ring with. A white athletic shirt that moves with him, gives his long, lean muscles space to move. To flex and contract with every shallow breath.Â
Heâs still just as gorgeous as always, even with a split lip and a nasty cut that spans the length of his temple. Even with the bruising thatâs already begun to discolor his near flawless skin.Â
Sighing, you nod towards the chair behind him. âSit down.â
âWhat?â Confusion draws his brow downward, and he hisses in pain at the movement.Â
âDonât tell me your illegal fights have ruined your hearing too.â
âWhat? No.â Jungwon shakes his head. âMy hearing is perfectly fine, I mean.â
âThen sit.â You glance pointedly at the chair again. âDown.â
This time, he doesnât try to argue. You watch from your periphery, frowning at the slight limp in his left leg as he walks toward the chair, easing himself down.Â
Reaching for the first aid kit on the counter, you bring it with you as you move across the room.Â
Your steps are slow and even. They carry you all the way to the far corner, until youâre forced to stop.Â
Standing above Jungwon, your lips pull into a tight line as you begin to assess his injuries. Hesitation might be wise, but you canât find any of it left in you.Â
Your movements are sure, gentle but firm. Hands sliding to his jaw, you adjust his face slightly, turning the gash on his temple towards the light. Itâs an echo of the way he examined you in the workroom, long weeks ago.Â
This time, itâs him thatâs easily manipulable underneath your touch.Â
âWhat are you doing?â He whispers.Â
Your hesitation is gone, but so is your patience. âDonât talk.â Jungwonâs lips fall shut. Heâs pliant in your hands as you adjust him.Â
Reaching for the kit, the first thing you pull out is antiseptic cream.Â
âThis might sting,â you whisper.Â
âItâs okay,â he assures you. But he hisses at the contact all the same. âDoesnât even hurt,â he lies through gritted teeth, forcing a smile.Â
If heâs trying to be funny, his attempt at humor is lost on you.Â
Gaze still narrowed in concentration, you busy yourself by cleaning the worst of his wounds first.Â
As you move from his forehead to his lip, you donât think you imagine the sharp inhale he draws between parted lips.Â
âIt stings?â You ask him.Â
âJust a bit.â You feel the ghost of his whisper against your fingertips.Â
You look up for a moment, and you find his gaze already locked on yours. It takes a significant portion of your willpower to stop yourself from reaching up to brush his hair from his eyes.Â
It feels wrong, even if you call it friendship. Even if you and Jay never discussed exclusivity.Â
Your heart is fluttering, and thatâs what makes it all seem so illicit.Â
With no small amount of effort, you force your eyes down again. Standing above him, your fingers move from his face to his hands. His wrist clasped in your fingers, you sink to your knees in front of him.Â
Jungwon swallows audibly.Â
Pulling his hand closer, you examine the series of shallow cuts, of angry, violet bruises that line his knuckles. With another long sigh, you reach for the cream again, applying it generously before carefully wrapping it in a bandage.Â
After giving the same attention to the other hand, you lean back, assessing your handiwork.
For a moment, neither of you moves. Youâre still kneeling in front of him. He still sits above you.Â
And then, after a breath of hesitation, one carefully wrapped hand finds its way to your face.Â
Gently, with a touch so light you hardly feel it, he lays his open palm against the expanse of your cheek. Cradles it. Â
He whispers your name, and you canât find it in you to look up.Â
âI donâtâŚâ you trail off, not sure how to communicate the swirling mix of emotions simmering just beneath the surface. âI donât want to be mad at you.â
âBut you are,â Jungwon assumes. He accepts it, and he doesnât let it change anything. His hand is steady against your cheek. His thumb starts to draw small circles, just under your earlobe.Â
âIâm not,â you correct. âBut this isnâtâŚâ again your words die. Itâs frustrating, the way you feel like you can never be straightforward with him. The way you always feel like you have to navigate through subtext and half truths and partial reveals just to get a point across.Â
âBut you donât owe me anything right now.â
His thumb stills against your skin.Â
âWeâre coworkers,â you continue. âWeâre just coworkers, so it doesnât matter if you fight in illegal boxing matches. You donât have to worry about what I think of it, and I donât have to be mad at you for it.â
You do look up at him, begging for a bit of his understanding. âYou can be evasive with your excuses and reject all of my invitations. We can meet by chance in the workroom on Monday afternoons, and none of it ever has to mean anything. Neither of us ever has to feel anything about it.â
âBut,â Jungwon whispers.Â
âYeah,â you nod. Your cheek slides easily against the soft skin of his bruised hand. âBut.â
Jungwon is silent for a moment, eyes darting between both of yours. Then, tentatively, he asks, âAre you mad at him?â
He doesnât say Jayâs name, but the venom he wraps around the word is all you need to know who heâs talking about.
You shake your head, eyelids fluttering. âWeâre coworkers.â You reiterate the boundaries heâs always maintained with you. âYou donât get to ask me that.â
Jungwonâs hand slides to your neck, thumb tracing the length of your jaw now. âAnd if I want to?â
You shake your head again. You can only give him so much on a silver platter. If he wants anything to change, heâll have to find a bit of his own bravery. âThatâs not the question you need to ask me.â Looking up at him, you draw another line. âAnd not tonight.â
Youâve both been through enough. Heightened emotions rarely lead to good decisions, and the last thing you want is his indecisiveness. His impulsivity.
Quietly, you stand, his hand falling from your face as you rise to full height in front of him.Â
His eyes look wider from this angle, from above. Even shinier than usual. No matter how many boundaries you draw or how many ways you deny him, heâs someone thatâs hard to say no to. Hard to walk away from.Â
Steeling the last remnants of your resolve, you manage to look him in those dark, sparkling eyes when you tell him, âGood night, Jungwon.â
âGood night, ___,â he whispers to your retreating silhouette.Â
Closing the door behind you, you barely have a moment to catch your breath before a voice interrupts your wandering thoughts.Â
âYou like him, donât you?â
The gasp you give is out of shock more than anything. And the âWhat?â you ask is a knee jerk reaction.
âYang.â Jay materializes from his position in the darkness, jerking his chin towards the door behind you. âYou like him.â
Immediately, you find yourself on the defense. Even if youâre just delaying the inevitable, itâs cagey when you tell him. âWe work together.â
Jay just looks at you. âMy favorite color is green.â
âWhat?â
âSorry,â Jayâs tone is flat. Heâs not annoyed, but heâs coming close to it. âI thought we were stating irrelevant facts.âÂ
With a sigh, he drags an open palm down his face. âI know you work together. But you like him, too," he sighs again, reading the horror in your expression. Mostly due to the fact that he read you like an open book when you thought you were keeping your feelings close to the chest. âIâm not⌠mad. It sucks, but itâs not like I was honest with you either. Iâm sorry, by the way, for lying about tonight.â
Itâs too much to process, all at once. Your head is swimming and your heart is pounding.Â
It was a shitty thing to do, yes, butâÂ
âYou donât have to say sorryââ
Again, Jay doesnât let you finish. âIâm not saying sorry because I have to. Iâm saying it because I am. I like you.â Heâs so honest. So blunt with his feelings. He makes things so easy. âI like spending time with you. I think we both know thatâs not enough anymore,â he casts another meaningful glance at the door behind him. The one that leads to Jungwonâs locker room, âbut itâs still true.â
âIâŚâ you trail off, unsure what to say. Heâs not wrong. In fact, heâs all but hit the nail right on the head. With deadly accuracy.Â
Heeseung was the one that found you, that brought you to Jungwon, but still.Â
Itâs not Jay that you checked in on fist. Itâs not Jay whose wounds you just cleaned. Itâs not Jay who youâre thinking about now.Â
Like he said, it sucks, but itâs still true.Â
Jay has bruises, too. Has cuts that line his knuckles and his jaw. Heâs here because heâs part of an illegal underground boxing ring. He lied to you about it.Â
But you just⌠youâre not mad at him about it. And thatâs the final nail in the coffin.Â
Jay just looks at you for a moment longer. For the third time, he sighs. âYouâre really gonna make me do this part too?â He inhales, steeling his resolve. âOkay, then. ___, I think we shouldââ
âI think we should stop seeing each other,â you finish for him. You can give him at least that much. âI had a great time getting to know you, but I think we want different things right now. I wish you all the best. Really, youâre a great guy, Jay.â
He is.Â
âI mean it.â
You do.Â
âThank you, ___.â
He means it too.Â
When Jay walks away from you, his shoulders are straight and his head is high.Â
You feel a lot of things, as you watch his retreating figure.Â
But no matter how deep you search, regret isnât one of them.Â
âŚ..
Monday morning brings with it a distinct sort of dread.Â
Partly because it marks the beginning of another long week. Mostly because going back to the office means potentially seeing him.Â
If youâre honest with yourself, youâre not sure if youâre ready for that. If youâre ready to face the feelings youâve been forcing down for months and the potential fallout they may bring with them.Â
So, when you open your inbox first thing in the morning, an unreasonable request from your supervisor isnât the thing youâre most afraid of finding.Â
Jungwon, however, isnât planning to stick to old routines. When he seeks you out, he does it in person.Â
Graceâs eyes are anywhere but on her own work when he walks through the door of the marketing department half past ten.Â
â___,â he breathes.Â
The wounds on his face are already fading, hardly even noticeable. You wish you could say the same for the turmoil raging inside of you. You canât decide if you want to throw your arms around his neck or tell him to fuck off.Â
In the end, you just look at him blankly.Â
âCan weâŚâ he trails off, visibly frustrated. He isnât sure how to do this either. âCan you help me with something? In the workroom. I think the printer is acting up again.â
The printer is fine. You used it five minutes ago.Â
But heâs not asking you to help him with work or the printer or anything else. Heâs asking for a bit of your time, a fraction of your understanding.Â
Itâs messy. It has so much potential for heartbreak, for complication.Â
But heâs here and heâs looking at you like your answer means the world to him. Like he might forget how to breathe if you donât say yes.Â
So, with a rising bout of uncertainty, you tell him, âLetâs go take a look at it.â
The printer, just as you suspected, is in perfect working order. Jungwon doesnât even spare it a second look.Â
Instead, he closes the door to the workroom behind you. And then he says, âI started boxing when I was a kid. I think I was eight, nine maybe.â
âWhat are youââ
âJust listen,â Jungwon begs. âPlease.â
You want to protest. Youâre not sure why, but the urge is strong. But after a moment of warring with yourself, you finally nod, giving him permission to continue.Â
âIt was just a hobby. Something to keep me busy on long afternoons when both of my parents were working in the restaurant my family owned. But I kept at it, and they could see how much I enjoyed it. By the time I was ten, my mom enrolled me in actual classes.â
Jungwon smiles, reminiscing on the tidbits of a happy childhood. But then his smile starts to falter. âA few months later, my grandpa died. It wasnât a surprise exactly, but it did have some unexpected consequences on the business. My family started to struggle. With money, more than anything.â
He sighs, and your heart hurts for a past version of him, too young to make sense of all of the sudden changes in his life. âI had to quit taking lessons. I kept practicing on my own, though. And when I started middle school, there was a free boxing club I joined. I met a lot of my friends there. Heeseung, who you met the other night, along with a few others. I also met Jay.â
Jungwonâs lips pull into a line. âI didnât hate him. Not exactly. He was nice enough, and we had a lot in common. But he had everything that I wanted. Money, mostly. His family never had to worry about it. He could take private lessons and always had all the nicest gear. He didnât flaunt it, but I noticed. And I envied him for it.â
Looking back at you, he continues, âHeeseung was the one that found the King Pen. He was like me, in a way. His family didnât come from money. We were young, too young, but we were good. We made them money, so they let us fight. Jay found out and wanted in too. It didnât matter that he didnât need the prize money. He just wanted to prove that he was better than us. That he was the best. It was me and him in my very first championship fight. He won, and I hated him for it.â
The ring, you realize. Jayâs ring that he dropped in your car. It was a championship ring.Â
Jungwon looks down at his hands. The bandages that you put there. âHe moved away once high school started. We didnât keep in direct contact or anything, but I always heard about him. Jay and his international boxing titles. Jay and his new sponsorship deal with a major boxing gym. It just added fuel to the fire that was already there. Made me resent him more, even if it wasnât his fault.â
No matter how you spin it, you canât imagine any of that was easy to deal with. Especially as a teenager.Â
âWith him gone, though, I started to make real money fighting. Good money. I lied to my parents and told them I got a part time job. Moving cargo so that they wouldnât be too suspicious when I came home with bruises.â
Jungwon flexes his fingers. âBoxing became my saving grace. I could give a good chunk of my earnings to my family, and the rest of it, I saved. It put me through university. Let me earn my programming degree.â
You understand him a bit more, then. Why he never seemed annoyed by his job. Why even things like jammed printers never seemed to get to him. Heâs thankful for where he is. Has nothing but gratitude for his job when he earned it with years of his own blood, sweat, and tears.Â
âI have a steady income now, but itâs just⌠hard, I guess. To let that part of me go. And if Iâm honest, part of me has always been afraid too. I mean, my parents had a steady income until they didnât, you know? I like knowing that even if something happens here, Iâll still be able to support myself. And them.â
It makes sense. It does.Â
âAnd then Jay came back.â Jungwon scoffs. âHeâd barely been in town for a full twenty-four hours when he showed up at Kangâs with all of his fancy gear and asked to be added to the roster for the next round of fights. And then he showed up there with you and I⌠I thought I was actually going to lose it.â
Even now, Jungwonâs shoulders are visibly tense. âThe actual gym is usually fine, safe for outsiders, but still. He shouldnât have risked your safety like that. He should have known better. And IâŚâ Jungwon trails off again.Â
You donât think youâre imagining the slight tinge of pink that starts to color his cheekbones.
âI was already having a bad enough time with the fact that you were seeing someone. When it turned out to be him, I just⌠Well, you know.â
Jungwon takes a deep breath in, releases a long exhale.Â
âI donât like making bets, and I donât like situations I canât predict. Things I donât have control over. I guess thatâs part of the reason why I always liked boxing so much. In the ring, I feel like I have a say in what happens. That even if I lose, itâs because I didnât move fast enough. I didnât think quick enough. Things I have control over. Things I can get better at.â
Jungwon looks at you. âI hate guessing. I hate having to wonder. I like sure things.âÂ
His chest is rising and falling a little faster now. Your breath is just as shallow.Â
âWhat are you saying?â you ask him.Â
âIâm saying that I donât just want to be coworkers with you. I want you to be mad at me for fighting in illegal underground boxing matches.â Jungwonâs gaze is imploring, pleading for your understanding as his eyes search yours. âI want you to call me when the printer jams and when you have a hard day and when you want someone to go to a stupid work event with you on a Friday night.âÂ
He takes a step closer to you, and you feel your spine press against the door of the workroom.Â
âI want you to be a sure thing,â he breathes, âeven if everything about you â the way I feel about you, the thoughts I have about you, the things I want to do to you â have always felt out of my control.â
âOh.â Your voice is small. Your mouth is dry. Caged in against the door, words are suddenly a hard thing to come by.Â
âOh,â Jungwon echoes. âIs that a yes?â
Heâs even closer now. Nose brushing against yours, he interlaces the fingers of his less injured hand with yours, reaching up until your hands are intertwined above your head.Â
âNo,â you shake your head.Â
âMm,â Jungwon hums, and you feel the vibration travel the length of your spine, settling somewhere deep, just beneath your navel. His lips brush against the corner of your mouth when he asks, âItâs a no, then?â
Again, you shake your head. Trapped in his embrace, the movement is tiny, restricted. Sends goosebumps scattering across your skin everywhere the two of you are touching.Â
âAn oh is just an oh,â you tell him. âThis is a yes.âÂ
There isnât any distance to close. Just pressure to add. He accepts it willingly, even if the sudden contact against the still broken skin of his bottom lip has him releasing a hiss through his teeth.Â
Itâs a discomfort he gets over quickly. His other hand, the one not currently tangled with yours, relocates to the curve of your jaw before heâs doubling down, pain all but forgotten as his lips part against yours.Â
A repeated motion. A rhythm thatâs stilted at first but starts to feel natural the longer you continue.Â
Over and over. Again and again until the action starts to feel useless. Until youâre not quite sure where his breath ends and yours begin.Â
Youâre in the office workroom, pressed against the door, and the printer is starting to beep in protest.Â
Youâre sure youâll be thoroughly embarrassed when you inevitably leave long minutes later with mussed hair and swollen lips and a certain programmer trailing behind you that canât contain his self-satisfied smile.Â
But for now, you get what he means. It feels good. It feels like relief, to finally know where you stand with him.Â
So instead of worrying about what your supervisor will think of your mussed collar and smudged lipstick, you pull him down a little firmer by the back of the neck, fingers tangling in the hair along his nape.Â
You sigh into his mouth, and the fervor he returns with leaves you well and truly breathless.Â
And for once, it feels like a sure thing.Â

epilogueÂ
Jungwon: SOS
Jungwon: Babyyyyyyyy
Jungwon: I know youâre reading my messagesÂ
Jungwon: PLEASE ___ I really need your help
You: Iâm BUSY what do you need
Jungwon: The printer is jammed again
You: And what do you want me to do about that? Call maintenance
Jungwon: Oh pleaseÂ
Jungwon: Last time I called maintenance they sent a guy that couldnât tell A4 from A3 this is not the job for them
Jungwon: Plus they donât have the magic touch like you
You: Literally what are you talking about
You: The last time I tried to fix the printer, I broke it so bad it was out of commission for two whole weeks
You: The entire floor was mad at me
You: I had to buy Grace coffee every day for TWO WEEKS
Jungwon: PLEASEEEEEE
Jungwon: Just try once and if it doesnât work Iâll call maintenance
Jungwon: I promise
You: âŚ
You: FINE
You: On my way
Tucking your phone back into your pocket, you sigh. The workroom door opens with little resistance, but as soon as you step inside, you frown.Â
Jungwon, for starters, is nowhere to be seen.Â
And the printer, at least from first impressions, appears to be working just fine. Completely jam-free.
Youâre not left in the dark for long. A moment later, the door opens behind you.Â
Tumbling in like an overexcited kitten, your boyfriend looks all too enthused to be dealing with a supposed jammed printer.Â
Gesturing towards the machine in question, you frown at him. âWhat were you talking about? The printer is perfectly fââ
He cuts you off with the press of his lips against your own, pushing you backwards until you run into the printer, spine arching against the copier tray.Â
âJungwon,â you protest once he finally lets you up for air. âItâs like you want HR to start a case against us. You have got to stop doing that.â
âDoing what?â He feigns innocence, even as he leans in again for another long kiss.Â
âMm,â you mumble, breaking free again. âYou know exactly what Iâm talking about. Faking printer emergencies as an excuse to make out. Weâre at work.â
Jungwon leans back, but the only thing he uses the space for is to let himself scan you from head to toe. Biting his bottom lip, he runs a set of fingers through the hair that falls across his forehead. âYou know, youâre a really terrible liar.â
âIâm not lyââ
âIf you actually wanted me to stop, you wouldnât fall for it every.â He presses a kiss to the tip of your nose. âSingle.â The top of your cheekbone. âTime.â The corner of your mouth. Â
And you hate to admit it, but he kind of has you there.Â
âWhatever.â You pout, but he just uses it as an excuse to plant another long kiss on your pursed lips. âIâm serious, Jungwon,â you tell him, even if youâre just as breathless as he is, despite the fact that youâre actively pulling him in by the back of his neck. âThis has to be the last time.â
âMm,â he smiles against your lips. âSure thing, ___.â

outtake â seven months ago.
The tinted window of Jungwonâs secondhand car is hardly an ideal mirror, but heâll have to make it work.Â
Giving himself a final once over, he straightens his already immaculate tie. Tugs at the collar of his button down shirt so that it lays just a little bit nicer, the edges of the folds just a fraction of a millimeter sharper.Â
Bending slightly, he smooths down his hair, pushing it away from his eyes. Catching his reflection again, he suddenly has second thoughts about the version of himself that he sees.Â
Bleaching his hair had seemed like a good â no, great â idea a few weeks ago. But now, dressed in business casual and about to begin his first day at a new job, doubts start to swirl through Jungwonâs mind.Â
What if they donât think the blonde is professional enough? What if it breaks some kind of unspoken dress code?
He knows it doesnât break the actual, company mandated dress code. Mostly because heâs already read through the handbook.Â
Twice.Â
With annotations.Â
Frowning slightly, Jungwon tilts his head to the side. Heâs gotten pretty good with concealer, but thereâs still a faint purplish tint that sits just along the edge of his jaw.Â
It takes a decent amount of effort not to wince at the memory. Sunghoon had gotten him good that day.Â
Jungwon forces his shoulders to relax. Forces himself to take one big breath in. Release it out slowly.Â
He has no reason to panic. He went through the same, brutal rounds of interviews as everyone else and was deemed to be the most qualified candidate. He graduated summa cum laude in the same field heâll be employed in now.Â
And itâs not like anyoneâs going to be looking at his face close enough to notice any slight discoloration. Or, at least, he doesnât think they will.Â
To be honest, heâs not really sure how this whole thing works. Office jobs, no matter how many online forums heâs scoured and articles heâs read, are still a bit of a mystery to him.Â
He hates it. Hates feeling out of his depth and ill prepared. Hates knowing that heâll have to ask too many questions and stumble through tasks until he gets the basics down.Â
But part of him is excited too.Â
He did it. Standing in the parking lot of an otherwise rather unremarkable company, it hits him all at once.Â
He actually fucking did it.Â
All those nights in the ring. Every bruise, every scar, every drop of blood. Every saved penny, every skipped opportunity.Â
They landed him here. An 8 to 5 office job that isnât flashy or anything special from the outside, but to him, means the world.Â
Heâll have it all: a steady salary, a place to be in the mornings, coworkers to notice when heâs not around. Itâs not much, but itâs his.Â
So, with one last deep inhale, Jungwon turns away from his car window and tracks a steady path on even footsteps towards the front door.Â
And a handful of hours later, when Terry from accounting is still talking his ear off about his sonâs latest hockey match in the doorway of the staff kitchen, Jungwonâs heart gives an unsteady lurch.Â
âHey, Terry,â you nod in acknowledgement, entering the kitchen in search of an early afternoon refill for your empty coffee mug. âHey, oh.â Your eyes meet his, lips parting. Your words die when you realize you donât know what to call him. When you realize youâve never actually seen him before.Â
And itâs not like Jungwon has never seen a pretty girl before, but â oh.Â
Oh.Â
Dressed in a rather simple, work approved ensemble, hair loose around your face, thereâs nothing specific that he can pinpoint. All Jungwon knows is that thereâs something about you that makes him want to keep looking.Â
âJungwon,â he supplies, a bit breathlessly.Â
Behind him, Terry is still regaling the details of his kidâs game-winning goal.Â
Eyes locked on him, a beat of heavy silence passes. And then â
âHi, Jungwon.âÂ
Your eyes. He thinks it must be your eyes. Or maybe your lips. The delicate curve of your cheekbone. His gaze canât decide where to land.Â
âHi,â he manages.Â
Eyes sliding over his shoulder to Terry, you release a small, amused breath. âHey, Terry?â
Stopping mid sentence, the middle aged man turns to you. âOh, hi, ____. How are you?â
___. Jungwon thinks it suits you. A pretty name for a pretty girl.Â
âJust fine, thanks.â You flash him a quick smile. Just a bare hint, and Jungwon feels his knees getting a little wobbly beneath him. âBut I was wondering if you could help me with something.â
âOf course,â Terry nods a little too enthusiastically. Fifteen years at the same company, and heâs the kind of person that still jumps at the opportunity to be needed. Helpful. Jungwon thinks itâs kind of sweet, even if he wishes the manâs gift for brevity in storytelling could be a bit more apparent.Â
âYou know the printer in the workroom?â
Terry nods.Â
âItâs jammed again,â you frown, the slightest hint of a pout pulling at your lips. Jungwon canât quite find it in himself to look away from the movement. âDo you think you could take a look at it for me?â
Terry beams. âOf course! Iâd be happy to.âÂ
And then itâs just the two of you.Â
âHe means well.â You smile again, softer this time. Like youâre discussing an inside joke only the two of you know about.Â
Jungwon is suddenly finding his breath a difficult thing to maintain.Â
âDoes the printer do that a lot?â He finally manages to ask. âJam, I mean.â
âAll the time.â You roll your eyes. âYouâd think a company raking in this much profit would have the cash to spare on a new machine, but no. This entire floor is just ill fated to sufferâ Thereâs an air of humor to your words, a slight hint of teasing, even if Jungwon thinks thereâs an undercurrent of truth to your words.Â
You smile again. Teeth tugging at your bottom lip, Jungwon can only describe your expression as slightly devious. âItâs not jammed now, though.â
His brow furrows. âItâs not?â
You shake your head. âI was given the gory details of Terryâs sonâs soccer game yesterday. Trust me, I saved you a headache and an extra thirty minutes.â You wink at him, and Jungwon really, really hopes the sudden heat in his cheeks doesnât look as obvious as it feels.Â
âI think it was a hockey match, actually.â
âOh.â You pause for a moment, considering. âRight.â
A moment of silence passes. Another. Jungwon has never minded the quiet, but heâs not quite ready for this interaction to end. Suddenly, he feels like heâs scrambling for something to prolong it.Â
âThank you.â
Your brow furrows. âFor what.â
âThe extra thirty minutes and the absence of a headache.â Jungwon taps two fingers against his temple. âI appreciate it.â
âAh,â you smile, and this time itâs a bit brighter, wider. Jungwon, not for the first time today, thanks his lucky stars that he was accepted for this position. That it landed him here, sharing a staff kitchen with someone like you. âAnytime.â
He hopes you mean it.Â
And when you turn away from him a few moments later, original mission to refill your coffee remembered, Jungwon looks up at the ceiling with his eyes screwed shut and takes a long, much needed breath.Â
âJungwon,â you turn back. Luckily, heâs just returned to a more natural standing position.Â
âYeah?â
âItâs nice to meet you. Donât let this place get you down too quickly.â You wink again. Jungwon does his best to keep his features neutral. âIâll see you around, yeah?â
âYeah,â he agrees, even though youâve already turned back to the coffee machine. âSure thing, ___.â
