A horror/action trope I don’t think is done enough is when a character sacrifices themselves (or at least says they will) but when they actually do they find it’s much more painful and horrible than they expected so they are left begging for mercy from the people they sacrificed themselves to save.

Day four of my dog sitting on my legs: I am running out of food, I don’t know how much longer I will last. I may have to eat my pillow if I wish to survive.

Hyde rarely sleeps, but when he does he does that deep sleep thing cats do in random places and scares all the lodgers cause they think he just dropped dead until someone shakes him really hard and he snaps awake like nothing ever happened.
