"how does it work? the whole—" a hand that waves around him as though the motion is supposed to tell him everything that her voice currently isn't. "—mind reading thing work? do you get to pick who you're reading or does it just happen?" natasha is generally curious partially because she couldn't imagine the chaos of not having a choice.

safety came in many forms when entering natasha's home, it began with the utter darkness that consumed each room other than the light from the moon that crept through the curtains. there was the knife kept by the bedside, and the pistol between the mattress and the box spring. people there was the occasional piece of furniture that jutted just enough into a walkway to trip someone who wasn't aware of the layout. and there was the creak of the door that she hadn't felt the need to fix.
she sat in silence, unmoving, sleep still in her voice as she spoke to the intruder. "you've got a lot of nerve coming this late without a head's up."

"do you choose to linger in the dark shadows for dramatic effect because i've got to be honest with you, i've known you were following me for about three blocks now." natasha shrugs as the words leave her mouth, choosing now to turn and look at the other. "wouldn't it be easier to just tell me what you need instead of this whole lurking and brooding nonsense?"
“you can’t just casually mention you’ve technically died once” i can actually. it’s funny
