AH your response really makes me want to write a fic where luffy is immortal via the surgery. He watches his crewmates grow older and accomplish their dreams, all of them trying their best to live without regrets despite the inevitable. When all is said and done it's only luffy and the sunny, remnants of bygone days, while the world steadily grows past the need for pirates and marines š. Luffy sticks around so he can be with the reincarnation of his loved ones, who always somehow find their way back to him, though they're never all alive at the same time again (or at least for a very very long time) š
Okay okay, IF it's an immortal!Luffy route where all the Straw Hats are reincarnated - my heart can take that, because he can just find them again and he won't be alone throughout eternity. I can just imagine each and every one of the Straw Hats laying eyes on this silly guy in a straw hat and going, I know you. THAT EVEN IF IT'S ANOTHER LIFE, EVEN IF THEIR MEMORIES HAVE BEEN WIPED, THEIR SOULS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TIED TO LUFFY AND WILL ALWAYS KNOW HIM - WILL ALWAYS LOVE HIM, AND THEY WOULD FIND EACH OTHER LIKE TWO SHIPS IN FOG.
Please let me know if you write this idea - I will bawl my eyes out and never be the same after

I forgot to put the don't earlier omg this is so ruined I MEANT IT LIKE
Ok what's worse: the strawhats waiting a lifetime for luffy to return to them, or luffy becoming immortal and outliving everyone he cares about?
The first scenario reminds me of that Bojack Horseman quote, "Was it worth it to be happy for a little bit even though it ended up sad? Or would it have been better if the whole thing never happened?" I think this isn't as bad as the immortality scenario because the Straw Hats have each other to lean on, and if they reach the end of their life without Luffy returning, maybe they'll be happyāthinking that Luffy's waiting on the other side for them.
I think immortality is one of the cruelest punishments you could put on someone, especially Luffy, considering his unique relationship with death. It's one of the OP endings I hope Oda doesn't use (through Law's Devil Fruit power).
Grief is something you don't get over. It'll always be there, but you grow to live with it. Knowing Luffy, he'd find new people to love and journey with, but they'd leave him all the same, and loneliness is Luffy's greatest weakness. I don't want to imagine this kind of torture on him.
looking back at my YLTS brainstorm doc and losing it
Chapter 6 "I don't get why we have to sleep in two different rooms anyway" Luffy whines, completely oblivious to the declaration of war he just interrupted. "Can't we just all share the biggest?"
Sanji lightly slaps him upside the head. "Luffy! A lady needs her space! Though, if you ever feel lonely, my lovely, I'm more than happy to-"
"Pass!" Nami sighs and rubs her forehead. "We still got that other room with all that junk. I wanted to keep it free for an infirmary, but as long as we don't have a doctor that's a moot point I guess. How about we clear that out and you boys can figure out who bunks with whom."
"Luffy!" They all shout at the same time.
Nami lets her forehead collide with the tabletop. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.Ā
