Mountain Moment: Hairy Woodpecker

Sometimes easier to hear than see, hairy woodpeckers (Picoides villosus) live year-round in Mount Rainier's forests. This male hairy woodpecker (note the red patch on the back of the head) was observed hunting for insects on a dead tree in the Carbon River area of the park.

This black-billed magpie took advantage of Wind Cave National Park’s new bison ride-share program. 

One of America’s oldest national parks, you can find wildlife roaming, and riding through, the rolling prairie grasslands and forested hillsides.
