Okay, I wrote a fic about if Jacob couldn't turn back into a human at the end of DoDA. There's no Jacob x Noor or Jacob x Emma since I'm not interested in romance, and I don't like either ships. I'm open too and would deeply appreciate constructive criticism! Btw, chapter two's kinda long so be prepared😁
Chapter 1
Jacob Portman has done a surprisingly large number of stupid things in the past year, but he believes that this one takes the cake.
It went on and on, racking Noor's body until Jacob and all the other peculiars feared she would burst apart. When it was finally over, she rocked back onto her heels as the last gleams of Caul's soul dissipating in the wind and the black ocean current. Then, Noor slumped to the ground, all her energy spent from vomiting up a madman's soul(s)(?).
They all ran to her, Ms. Peregrine flying due to still being in bird form, circling around the light eater in hopes that she at least passed out. However, Noor stirred and Jacob and Bronwyn heaved her up with one gentle pull.
Jacob tried to speak to ask his friend, "Hey, you alright? Can you walk?" but his words came out as a garbled wail. Once again, the sobering reality that he was indeed now a hollowghast hit the once teenage boy like a freight train, a feeling of dread and "Well, shit" settling itself in his stomach.
He looked down as he heard Noor let out a small gasp. "You're glowing. It's inside you," Noor stated, a sense of dread forming over the group like a dark cloud.
Yeah, Jacob decided to not investigate that statement any further in hopes that maybe if he ignores his monstrous state, it'll all go away and he can be happy and human again!
"My God," Emma's voice cracked, tears brimming in her eyes. "Oh, Jacob, what have you done?"
"He saved us," Noor uttered weakly.
"You have," Hugh insisted, most likely with the intent to alleviate the guilt Noor probably felt.
Noor pulled herself away from Bronwyn and Jacob's support, shuffling her feet to face the hollowghast. "Jacob, open your mou-"
However, before any action could be taken to save Jacob's humanity, the cliff gave away beneath them, Ms. Peregrine's avian shriek of warning just a second too late.
Chapter 2
Darkness.
That's all Jacob saw for god-knows-how-long as he began to wake. Firstly, the smell of decay, blood, and rubble filled his lungs, making it evident that he was somehow in Devil's Acre, and indeed not dead.
Okay, what the hell happened? Last thing Jacob remembers is Noor throwing up, the cliff giving out beneath them and… Uh-oh. Jacob scrambled to his feet, feeling way too tall and heavy, as his head swiveled around the room until he caught sight of his reflection in a dirty, cracked mirror on the wall. He couldn't even recognize the monster that stared back at him, copied his movements and synchronized with his breathing. No longer a seventeen year old boy; his skin was an ashen gray with limbs that were too long—even by peculiar standards. His spindly fingers were now tipped with sharp claws, while his body looked emaciated, and eyes were a soulless black. Funnily enough, his black hair seemed mostly the same, making Jacob chuckle slightly as he ran a clawed hand through the strands. Instantly, however, he shut himself up due to the guttural sound escaping his maw that was lined with small, razor sharp teeth.
Jacob Portman, the grandson of the infamous hollow slayer, Abe Portman, now reduced to the very same monster that his grandfather had dedicated his life to wipe off the face of the earth; the very same monster that had ravaged all of peculiardom for a century. The irony was not lost one bit.
“Mr. Portman, you're finally awake. Everyone is eager for news about your condition.”
Jacob whipped around at the sudden voice from behind him, but quickly snuffed his panic as he realized it was just Ms. Peregrine—maybe she can help him! He tried to say her name but stopped as a guttural snarl rose from his throat instead of his voice. Ms. Peregrine didn't seem revolted from his inhumanity, however, she seemed more… saddened than anything, and Jacob knew it was his fault.
“What you did, Mr. Portman, was the most idiotic stunt you've ever pulled since first coming into this world. But… you had a hand in defeating my brother—I don't believe Ms. Pradesh would've been able to take him on alone. I'm afraid, though… there's no coming back from this, Mr. Portman, unless you would follow through in consuming another peculiar's soul, but I know you would never even consider anything in the likes. The Council expresses great gratitude for your sacrifice, but not all of peculiardom will be as understanding as we or your friends are.”
She paused to let her words sink in.
A million thoughts circled through Jacob's head as he was now made fully aware of the ramifications of his actions. Does he regret anything? No—not really—it's just soul-crushing to think about what his future will look like from this point on. From Ms. Peregrine's words, he fully recognizes that he's a monster that's feared by peculiars—he's like an outcast among outcasts, if you may. He thought that he could live the best of both worlds, normal and peculiar, but that's all gone now. Jacob can't ever see his parents, walk amongst peculiars, finish school, or anything as this abomination!
Inkly black tears silently feel down his face, an odd feeling since he's a hulking monstrosity. Suddenly, through his moment of self-pity, Jacob felt two arms gently wrap his neck. He glanced down to see the short woman that is Ms. Peregrine embracing him, standing on the tips of her toes so she can reach up to wrap her arms around his neck. Jacob instantly wrapped his lanky arms around the older woman, gently resting his head on her shoulders as he continued to sob, not caring for the ugly sounds escaping him. Ms. Peregrine never even flinched as his tears stained her already black dress, instead holding the monster in a motherly embrace.
“If it means anything to you, Mr. Portman, Abe would be so proud of you.”
She whispered to him, and it meant the world to Jacob.
