Hope in a time of genocide: a Palestinian journalist's perspective on Gaza fundraising
Journalist and former charity worker Siraj Abudayeh discusses ever-changing conditions in Gaza, social media fundraising, and why, since the beginning, he has fought for his right to stay Palestine.
There have been many coordinated groups led by Palestinian diaspora and pro-Palestinian activists abroad who are all dedicated to raising money for families such as yours. Beyond raising money, what effects do you think these organized campaigns have had on Palestinians in Gaza?

These groups work despite the great challenges. They make a great effort for the Palestinian campaigns. They have had a great impact in alleviating the suffering of needy families in light of the ongoing fierce war on the Gaza Strip. Thanks to these campaigns, many families have been able to provide many of their needs that they could not. Providing it in light of the lack of a source of income and high prices.
I've noticed that, unlike other people who are fundraising for evacuation, you began this journey trying to rebuild your family home. What was your thought process in choosing to rebuild instead of evacuate?

If we all evacuate from our country, the Zionist occupation will easily control it and steal our land. I make it my goal to stay in my land, build my homeland, and prevent the occupation from controlling it. The homeland, to me, is a sacred place and represents something big for me and my family. We want to build our homelands and not leave them and grant The occupation has the opportunity to control and steal it, and, God willing, Gaza will be liberated from these Zionists.

One day I will remove the rubble from the house, I will decorate it again with the Palestinian flag, with peasant embroidery, with antique accessories, with pottery, with the scent of thyme, oil, olives, dukkah, and Nabulsi. I will gather with my family around another hearth, but on our land, which we love, and on our soil, which we love like henna, and breathe like air. Today, tomorrow, a month later, or whenever God willing, we will return I love my country with an eternal love that has no cure or cure.
What you describe here - the efforts of volunteers, your own commitment to rebuilding your life despite the occupation’s effort to tear it down, even refusing to leave when they try to kick you out - all sounds like resistance to me. What is your perspective on resistance to genocide, in all its forms? To you, what does it mean to resist?

We are not just resisting the resistance that the world knows...

We resist while getting a living. We resist [in] queues for bread, water, oven, and cell phone charging.

We are struggling with the tent that melted from the heat of the sun and was torn apart.

We resist memories that shatter us a thousand times a minute.

We resist insects, rodents, flies, mosquitoes and sand.

We are resisting a resistance that cannot be counted or counted.

But nonetheless..

Gaza will not be left, if it leaves us, Gaza is inside us, growing inside our hearts, inside our soul. Gaza is not a city! Gaza is the mother of the whole country, the last of the walls. I will not get out of it even if my soul does.

TUMBLR 101: a helpful guide for tiktok refugees

are YOU a former tiktok user trying to learn how to use tumblr to fill the void the american tiktok ban is leaving in your soul? here are some things you should know, from someone who’s going on their eighth year on this hellsite:

1. you can say anything on here. gone are the days of having to use words like “unalive” and “seggs.” murder! kill! sex! fuck! speak your mind!

2. there is a community for you on here. regardless of what you’re into or however small the fandom is, you have a place here. at least one other person will have heard of your weird obscure interest. strike up a conversation!

3. followers don’t matter. tumblr is one of the last remaining social media sites in which your number of followers means absolute jack shit. this can be disorienting at first, but once you lean into the fact that everyone on this website is equal, it’s very freeing. clout means nothing here.

4. similarly, you can post at any time. while tiktok has an algorithm that favors certain times, tumblr has no such algorithm. post whatever you want, whenever you want. every post has virtually the same chance at getting notes, regardless of when it is posted.

5. tags can have spaces between the words! this one is very exciting. tags can be a whole sentence. you can also use the tags to comment on someone’s post without actually adding onto the physical post itself (which is sometimes frowned upon and called “derailing” if you use this feature to bring up a completely different point other than the one that’s being made on the original post).

TL;DR: speak your mind, find your place, followers don’t matter, post anytime, have fun with tags!! tumblr is a wonderful site used to share things you’re excited about. be patient with yourself as you’re learning and have fun!

A piece about survivors guilt.

This comic isn't perfect. I started it back in October 2023, and every time I picked up my pen, I wept.

I bring this to you today, on 9/11, in hopes that you reflect on this day a little differently than how most Americans would. Let it move you to continue to boycott, protest and challenge your family, friends and colleagues. You have a bigger impact than you would believe.

Thank you for reading this with an open heart.

From the river to the sea...

I'd like to bring to attention the fact that the figures depicted above are a gross undercount of the actual number of deaths. I scoured the internet high and low to source my findings and not a single one could break down the devastation that befell an individual ethnicity. Instead, they lumped a bunch of ethnicities together, provided a general timeline, and called it a day, reinforcing the sheer scale of dehumanization propagated in the west. The only consistency between all the articles I looked up was the 4.5 to 4.7 million figure I've included above, and even then, they were all published by western media news outlets... the very same that have been so unreliable and complicit in the genocide of Palestinians today. So I have to take everything they say with a grain of salt.

We are not just numbers.

All of us have ambitions and desires and lives worth living.

With that said, this is your friendly reminder to:

Donate an e-sim

Donate to PCRF to provide Palestinian children aid

Donate to Pious Projects to provide woman with feminine hygiene kits

Donate to CareForGaza to provide food to displaced families in Gaza either through their Gofundme or their paypal

Donate to any of the vetted gofundme campaigns on GazaFunds to help Palestinians trying to flee Gaza.

And if you or someone you know sees or experiences a hate crime and can afford it, SUE. This is a more effective use of your money than most realise. The reason zionists act with impunity is because of the normalization of white supremacy and oppression of ethnic minorities. Challenging that in any capacity tells them that there are consequences to their actions and makes them think twice before engaging in hate crimes and helps raise all of us up against the systems currently in place that let them get away with it.

If you can't donate or spend any money, you can:

Do your daily clicks.

Boycott targeted companies on the BDS list (if you're like me and you don't want a single dollar to go towards anything supporting Israel right now, you can use Bdnaash to double check what products are okay to buy, but the BDS list is sufficient as it is a strategic attack and proven very effective thus far)

Flood your representatives emails and voicemails with how you won't be voting for them unless their politics align with an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Attend a protest, be LOUD.

Challenge your circle of friends, family and colleagues with conversations about Palestine. (THIS IS THE MOST UNDERRATED AND MOST EFFECTIVE THING YOU CAN DO)

and if you're really up to, be disruptive in any capacity that you can think of towards major corporations benefiting from this onslaught. (i.e. halting military manufacturers from production + shipments, sticking boycott stickers on products at your market etc)

And finally, if your country wasn't mentioned in the above excerpt, it was no deliberate omission on my part and I encourage you to come forward and tell your story about the suffering of your people so that this may be a learning opportunity for everyone.

You are seen.

You are not alone.

Thank you again if you've read this far.

Happy Let Papyrus Say Fuck Day 2024!!!

In case anyone wants to know why Papyrus is so mad-

He’s the one that comforts Frisk when they wake up every night with nightmares. He’s the one that drives them to and from therapy. He’s the one that takes care of them.

That’s his kid.
