Hey, do you have a reading list for batman: nml. I'm so afraid of it, but I think it's time for me to read it 🙂‍↕️.

YEAHHHH im so proud of you anon. nml is long & intimidating but it is also sooo worth it and is so foundational to the batman mythos.

to start, no man’s land has a few different parts which i would highly recommend reading all of. the saga goes cataclysm -> road to no man’s land volumes 1 & 2 -> no man’s land. cataclysm is 18 issues where the quake actually happens, rtnml is kinda prequel & setup, and then the brunt of the story happens in nml proper. a lot of people kinda just skip past road to no man’s land or don’t know they’re supposed to read it at all which i think ISNT the way to go lmaoo there is some very important context and stories in there.

so the problem with finding good no man’s land reading lists is that most of them are not accurate💀 like there is just so much of it that a lot of issues slip through the cracks and it’s hard to find a truly complete thorough guide. honestly my best recommendation might be to look for the omnibus trades. your library might have them, or you can always just look up the omnibuses on rco.

for the rest of nml there is a list here, which looks pretty accurate from a first glance EXCEPT for the road to no man’s land list which leaves some things out, volumes 1&2 of rtnml should be this at least according to locg

this site breaks down the issues by omnibuses which is helpful.

mem @havendance has a very helpful guide to important nml issues here along with some commentary, and also has a timeline of the whole event here which is very nice to reference.

One problem I’ve encountered while drawing the Kakashi from “rocks fall; scene end” is that we don’t fucking know how his mangekyo sharingan looks like, because, there’s no description of it (at least that I remember, if there is. Well, I’m ignoring that now). So I’ve taken it upon myself and decided to dedicate a few hours to designing one.

Here’s the brainstorming page:

All of them are clocks, yeah yeah, very creative I know. At first I thought about going the obvious route and straight up doing an analog clock, bc look at this

it looks sick as fuck, but it’s very clockwork creepypasta (love her) and kinda lazy. So I scrapped that and fixated on the hourglass.

The hourglass was a whole other beast and opened up way too many design possibilities for me. I eventually decided to not go too crazy on design and stick to simple shapes and ended up with those ones at the bottom of the page

It’s base design consists of a mix of a few elements:

First we got the… umm, like the line in the center (?). Which when you separate it from the other shit, looks like a scythe!

And yeah, at first I did it bc it looked pretty cool and was similar to the thingies Obito’s sharingan has

But THEN I thought: this looks like a scythe, you know where scythes are used?

AGRICULTURE

And who better to have one than our scarecrow of the fields? (I’m so smart I know)

i think we need to talk about this unit thematically

i know it's "haha april fool's day, they're stuck in a futuristic city and rui wants to study the silly sekai aliens" but like... hear me out

im pretty sure these 4 were picked because they all have one major thing in common— the fact that they were failed by society.

kaito v1 was a commercial failure on release, to the point where other vocal synth companies looked at his low sales and consequently made less male vocal synths— leading to the large gender gap in vocal synths that we still have today (although its less than what it was ~5 yrs ago imo). i think clpl actually considered this when picking kaito for this unit solely because it's vbs kaito— the kaito that most strongly resembles old fanon kaito in how he can easily be described as a carefree dumbass that loves icecream.

rui was ostracized his whole life for being "dangerous" with his shows by his classmates, as well as being isolated because of how he was "different" from the other kids (implied neurodivergent). this lead to rui struggling with depression as well as a myriad of other issues (such as his abandonment issues) later on.

akito was ALSO ostracized for being too serious about his passions and having a "bad attitude", which lead to him developing an inferiority complex as well as leading to him essentially being overly polite to strangers because of his past trauma where he was publicly humiliated, had his reputation ruined, and brought disgrace to a place he loved just for accidentally spilling water on someone 💀 (find a way out is so real) ((also i choose to see akito as neurodivergent mainly because of how his behavior is framed idk i feel like him being overly polite is him masking, esp. when u compare his behavior between different people.. recent example: how he acts around rui vs how he acts around mafuyu for example)) (((also, he's rui's narrative foil, so it just makes a lot of sense???)))

and then there's haruka, who was so close to being the "perfect" idol but couldn't because of her trauma from hurting mai— she was unable to meet the expectations of being an idol under the pressure of probably not only her managers but also the large fanbase she always wanted to give hope to
