He stepped inside his bedroom, it was dark and there was a small lump of duvet on his bed - covering the figure of his wife. He thought she had fall asleep but when he was the dim brightness, she was still using her phone.

"Not asleep?"

She peaked her head out of the duvet as she sheepishly replied, "Just woke up. Have you eaten? Do you want me to reheat the food?"

Lesser and lesser, she had lose all interest in him.

If it was 2 months ago, she'd be willing to stay up all night - waiting for his return because she just missed him so much. But what was left to miss? He barely spared his time with her, let alone attempt to reconcile this marriage.

Morning came in a blink of eye, Toji scoffed at the bright ray peeping from the curtains. He looked at his phone and it was already 7.15 a.m. His wife's side on bed was cold, so he went to the kitchen.

Megumi was sitting on the sofa, as cute as ever with his school uniform and Toji ruffled his hair, earning a groan from the small child.

"Megumi, check your bag properly. Don't leave any books behind. Your teachers complained that you always forgot to bring your books."

She came out from the little boy's room, carrying a few books in her hand. The father and son looked at her with something in their mind but they didn't say anything.

Today, she tried to dress up.

They said she looked like a commoner, not an ounce of elegance in her style so she altered her preference. But she found herself becoming a hollow shell of someone who wasn't her.

Last night, she woke up to a text from her friends that they had planned out a simple reunion for ex-classmates and she was excited to see how her friends have changed. Maybe some of them have married.

"Where are you going?" Megumi was the first to ask and she didn't turn around to look at him, continued walking straight to the door and fetched her nude high heels. She signaled him to come closer, taking out the small white shoes.

Kneeling to the ground, she helped Megumi to balance himself as he placed his small hand on her shoulder. She still hadn't reply, only smiled faintly before she grabbed the keys.

Toji was waiting for an answer but judging from her silence, he knew she was keeping something to herself. His temple throbbed a little.

"Answer that child."

She was busy sorting out her bag, rummaged through her stuff and replied,

"I'm meeting up with my friends."

"While dressing up like that?"

She looked into his eyes and saw the ridicule in his tone. Disappointment and embarrassment, she knew she looked ugly but hearing it from him first hand, she could only swallow her tears and smiled weakly.

"Dad, I'm sick of the canteen food. I already know how to use money and pay for my foods, so can you please tell her to make my lunch box again?"

Toji was driving his way to his home after picking up his son from the school. When he heard the last sentence, he couldn't help but ask,

"What are you talking about? You can tell her by yourself. Why are you asking me that?"

"But you said you were trying to teach me how to use money!"

"Since when-" Toji paused. So she hadn't cook for his son and used his name as an excuse. If she was working too, he didn't mind it and would gladly take a nanny to take care of it but she was so eager to play her 'motherly' role. That was why he didn't say a thing.

So she had been living off his money without doing a thing for his family?

He already knew that marrying a new wife would be a problem. Originally, he thought she'd make a good mother but she was too conceited.

She always feel like she deserved some sort of place in his house when he fed her luxury and wealth. He didn't plan to build a family with her; he was satisfied if she continued being filial.

While he was in his own thoughts, his phone screen lighted up - an unfamiliar contact was displayed as an incoming call. He swiped right,

"Toji Fushiguro here. Who's on the phone?"

It was silence before he heard the man muttered his name. Oh, it was his father-in-law.

The call was short but the old man sounded desperate as he hinted that he needed legal advices on the current case his company had fallen to. Toji was already annoyed at his daughter so his answers were curt and uninterested.

The old man on the other hand, stared at his cheap phone as his son-in-law hang up on him. He said that he was driving and he'd contact him sooner. But this old man smiled weakly. He wasn't conceived by the white lies. That handsome man didn't even save his number.

Just when the clock ticked to 8 p.m, the main door was pushed open and she immediately arranged her heels on the rack. It was quiet. Maybe Megumi was doing his homeworks and Toji was probably out again.

But as she went to the bedroom, her husband was already waiting with his defeating silence. She felt scared and waited for his remarks.

"Don't use my name as an excuse if you want to be lazy. Start packing his lunchbox again. That's the least you could do as his mother."

Ah, so it's about this.

She nodded, her body felt sluggish and all the excitement, happiness she enjoyed from the small reunion vanished completely. She was tired of this.

The texts she received from her father made it hard for her to continue sharing the same bed with her husband. Her father was kind as ever, replying to her that he didn't want to bother Toji with such a small case like his.

He said that he would seek another lawyer for a legal advice and took the right actions, his son-in-law had many important things to deal with it. But her eyes couldn't stop tearing up, so my father isn't among the many important things?

She laid down in the huge bed, facing to the other side with her back to Toji. What was she even thinking when she thought this prestigious Zenin family would take her in? A Cinderella fairytale?

His new wife had became more of a stranger after that night. He wanted to brush it off, because who knows that maybe she was acting this way to grab his attention?

He left it be for a week, expecting her to return to her original self after he gave her a few space but what came in return was a short text in his phone, telling him that she wouldn't be at home for a while because his father-in-law's health had been declining.

The stress and anxiety regarding the legal case caused her father to fell from his great health. She knew that she had to ask for help from her husband but the more she remembered how she was treated in that house, all that left was a bitter taste in her mouth.

"What's wrong, honey?" Her mother touched her face with so much love and concerned. She pitied how her parents wanted her to grow a family yet what came to her was a role of a dead ex-wife.

She had enough.

From 4 months, became 4 years.

From a new wife, became a wife.

From a hopeful figure, became a hollow shell.

Megumi watched his step-mother packed his lunchbox, adding the fruit juice he liked before he pushed a sticker note to her way. Her solemn eyes stared to the bright note with nothing before he said,

"You used to write me little notes. Do it again. I like it."

She wanted to laugh. Laugh at how innocent his request was and how much she hated it. So she grabbed the black pen, and wrote a simple;

"Eat well. - *insert name"

Megumi smiled and took a look but his smile vanished bit by bit after he read it. The lengthy wish he expected was only two words. And to make it worst, it didn't end like how she used to write.

It ended with her name, instead of 'mom'.

That was the first time he felt like a huge slap to his face. Because he used to put up a fight that she wasn't his mother and always cursed her for stealing his mother's place.

So after years of harsh words, she learned to accept her position. She wasn't his mother and she didn't intend to become one either.

She had learned to accept that she wasn't needed and she was okay with that.

"Hurry. He is waiting outside." She turned her back to Megumi, walking to the sofa before she laid down and began to switch the TV channels. Her eyes stared at the bright colors from the screen,

Megumi clutched his lunchbox and he remembered how she used to hold his hand, guided him to the gate and even planted a small kiss on his cheek which he always refused.

Maybe he was being over sensitive, but he couldn't help but cried a little when he couldn't recall how her perfume smelled because it had been so long since she last hugged him.

This was the redemption he had to pay. This would be the second time he was left behind by his mother; one left him for the grave, and the other one left him for her own good.
