This is actually really cool! This seems like actually one of the cool things that AI can help with. In comparison, last thing I heard about coding enzymes, they were reliant on gamers and puzzle thinkers to play a video game where they were the ones to try and figure out the best amino code that'll make a working protein (god bless those gamers and thinkers)
In laboratory tests, some of these enzymes worked as well as those found in nature, even when their artificially generated amino acid sequences diverged significantly from any known natural protein.
The experiment demonstrates that natural language processing, although it was developed to read and write language text, can learn at least some of the underlying principles of biology. Salesforce Research developed the AI program, called ProGen, which uses next-token prediction to assemble amino acid sequences into artificial proteins.
Scientists said the new technology could become more powerful than directed evolution, the Nobel-prize winning protein design technology, and it will energize the 50-year-old field of protein engineering by speeding the development of new proteins that can be used for almost anything from therapeutics to degrading plastic.
“The artificial designs perform much better than designs that were inspired by the evolutionary process,” said James Fraser, Ph.D., professor of bioengineering and therapeutic sciences at the UCSF School of Pharmacy, and an author of the work, which was published Jan. 26, in Nature Biotechnology. A previous version of the paper has been available on the preprint server BiorXiv since July of 2021, where it garnered several dozen citations before being published in a peer-reviewed journal.

It's gonna be such a funny mess when Donald Trump dies of a stroke on April 1st, 2024.
Naturally everybody will think it's fake because of the date only to lose their minds (both positively and negatively based on their opinion of trump) when realizing it's real
There will be massive celebrations in the streets and on social media and lots of predictable "don't speak ill of the dead" discourse about those celebrations
Weird evangelicals will pull some weird number trick talking about how Jesus was conceived on April 1st and that makes Trump a sort of messiah and people will make fun of that
The Republicans (after they're done with the faux-sadness and faux-outrage) will stomp over each other to be his successor but none of them will succeed. They'll tear each other apart and have no single nominee for the November elections.
There will be discourse about if Biden and the living former presidents should go to his funeral (they won't, he was a traitor insurrectionist)
The Ukraine-Russia War immediately goes in favor of Ukraine as morale in the Kremlin is reduced. China similarly backs off from its threats on Taiwan.
Ten thousand new memes are made, some sticking around for years to come.
Not a month later a bunch of unofficial biographies of Trump hit the bookshelves, many with new details about just how awful he was.
Once in 7th grade I saw my math teacher pull up his school email with what I now consider a measly 10,000 unread emails in his inbox. Back then, I was a simple lad and thought him to be incredibly important so I made it my goal to surpass him in emails. I am proud to announce that my email now contains nearly 40,000 unread emails and continues to grow.
I will be judging the responses, silently.
Sure I could try the shoelaces thing, or I could just advertise I'm on tumblr on my water bottle.
cutest thing about human biology is how they get sleepy after eating. sorry brain is offline due to digestion, check back later
Day 10 of barefoot shoes now! Here are some observations:
The ground is so utterly interesting!!! Especially the netherlands where everything is cobble and the footpaths are bumpy (bec the ground keeps sinking perpetually). I was missing this outlet of sensory info with normal shoes. I also like to wrap my feet along the edge of a stair.
Touching my toes to the edges of the shoe no longer feels like a stretch. In time my foot should expand enough that it naturally brushes the sides. I suspect if I wear my old shoe again it will feel very cramped already.
I also now walk more like a cat or a pawed animal for that matter. I see other people put their heel first, while I now put my foot down paw first. Apparently this is good not only for my feet, but also my leg, which should get thiccer, with the joints lasting longer. We shall see.
My socks don't get smelly at all and last for a week or more, though that maybe bec the shoe is new.

Prompt: write me a fanfiction of gay anthropromophized animation schools, sheridan and calarts, on a date to the zoo. include sheridan kissing calarts on the cheek and calarts falling into a pool of penguins Sheridan and Calarts stood outside the gates of the local zoo, their hands clasped tightly together as they gazed up at the sign that read "Welcome to the Happy Wildlife Park."
"I can't believe we're finally here," Calarts said, a wide smile spreading across his face. "I've always wanted to see the penguins up close."
Sheridan chuckled and leaned down to plant a soft kiss on Calarts's cheek. "Well, we're here now. And I can't wait to see all the animals with you."
The two anthropomorphized schools, both known for their excellent animation programs, had been dating for a few months now and had been planning this outing for weeks.
As they made their way through the zoo, they marveled at the various animals on display, from the majestic lions to the playful monkeys. But it was the penguin exhibit that really caught Calarts's eye.
"Oh my gosh, look at them!" he exclaimed, pulling Sheridan towards the glass enclosure. "They're so cute!"
Sheridan chuckled and wrapped an arm around Calarts's waist, pulling him in for a hug. "They are pretty adorable," he agreed.
The two schools watched in amazement as the penguins swam gracefully through the water, diving and resurfacing with ease. It was a magical sight, and Calarts couldn't help but feel his heart swell with love and appreciation for the amazing world around them.
As they were about to leave the exhibit, Calarts suddenly lost his footing and tumbled into the pool of penguins, causing a splash and a chorus of surprised squawks from the birds.
Sheridan rushed to the edge of the pool, a look of concern etched onto his face. "Calarts, are you okay?" he called out.
Calarts emerged from the water, soaking wet but grinning from ear to ear. "I'm fine," he laughed, shaking off the excess water. "That was so cool!"
Sheridan couldn't help but laugh at the sight of his drenched boyfriend, and he leaned down to give him a quick kiss on the lips. "I'm glad you're okay," he said with a smile.
As they left the zoo, hand in hand, Calarts couldn't stop smiling. He had never felt so alive and in love, and he knew that this was just the beginning of many more adventures to come with Sheridan by his side. The end
