Revolutionary Space Engine Turns An Airplane Into A Spaceplane

A revolutionary engine that can turn an aircraft into an orbiting spaceplane has won fresh backing from the British Government.

The hybrid engine called Skylon (Synergistic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine) — is currently being developed by Reaction Engines, SEN reports.

Until now, spacecraft heading for orbit have had to be launched by conventional rockets because of the amount of fuel needed to be get them into space.

Skylon, powered by SABRE engines, will change the game because it will draw oxygen for fuel from the atmosphere as it flies, meaning it needs to carry less fuel in its tanks.

It means the sleek cigar-shaped craft will be able to take off and land at conventional airports, just like a normal jet airliner. But unlike conventional aircraft engines, SABRE switches in flight to become a rocket engine that can boost Skylon spacecraft to a speed faster than Mach 5, or more than five times the speed of sound.

Skylon will be able to carry people and cargoes into space where it could dock with the International Space Station and help build new orbiting outposts. But when it returns to land like a normal aircraft, it can be readied for its next mission in just hours. The new technology will slash launch costs.

As well as launching Skylon, a version of SABRE called Scimitar would be able to power a futuristic airliner LAPCAT to fly from Europe to Australia in a little over four hours.

В скором времени мы приступим к публикации некоторых материалов, связанных с миром Эквиса, “Equis Universe” или, для краткости, EqU. Эквис – это оригинальный сеттинг, позиционирующийся как альтернативная вселенная на основе мира MLP. Здесь вы не найдёте знакомой Эквестрии и большинства иных атрибутов канона MLP. Вместо этого мы представляем новый мир, со своей историей, народами, героями и сюжетами.

История «Классического» Эквиса охватывает приблизительно две тысячи лет и посвящена в основном народам экви (пони), киринов, а также алакорна и древним эквес.  Мы начнём со статей, посвящённых отдельным народам, а также истории самого мира. Помимо этого, у нас есть несколько идей для рассказов, которые мы по мере возможностей будем воплощать в жизнь.

SpaceX completes first-ever rocket landing following launch. For the first time in history, an orbital rocket successfully landed back on Earth following the completion of its primary objective.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched 11 satellites for Orbcomm at 8:29 pm EST. Nine minutes later, at 8:38, the 156-foot tall first stage of the rocket landed at Landing Zone-1, seven kilometers south of where it started from, SLC-40.

Following its landing, SpaceX technicians will safe the rocket and lower it to a horizontal position. From there, it will be sent to a facility for further safing and inspection. Sometime in 2016, the stage will be sued for fit checks at the company’s newly-acquired and renovated LC-39A at Kennedy Space Center.
