It Was Almost Exactly 10 Years Ago When I First Came Across This Official Dir En Grey Manga. Back Then

It was almost exactly 10 years ago when I first came across this official Dir en grey manga. Back then I was full of hope that someone would one day translate this fierce piece of art for everyone. Turns out no one ever did. And I can’t really blame anyone, because the scans are tiny, the kana are even tinier and the character page is one blurry mess. Who, in their right mind, would do this to themself?! Well… I did. Because today my Japanese is finally good enough that I could translate this.

So here it is. Dir en grey’s Deadly Claris manga, book #1. (I have never seen the other ones and I am pretty sure they don’t exist; haha.) I genuinely hope you’ll enjoy reading it! <3

Book: Deadly Claris 1 Written by: Satou Yoshinawo || Drawn by: DADA Published: July 2003 Pages: 129

Notes: ● There are a few references to Dir en grey songs in this. The Demon Kingdom is actually the well-known “Rasetsu Koku”. (More accurately “Rasetsu” stands for “Rakshasa”; a man-eating demon in Hinduism and Buddhism.) Kaoru’s special attack is called Sin & Punishment - “Tsumi to Batsu”. And Kyo used the Blue Moon incantation - “Aoi Tsuki”. ● I’ve resized the pictures from 450px to 500px wide. ● I’ve included all the SFX, because I am out of my mind obviously. ● You do not necessarily have to know the band to read and enjoy this manga; tbh. Give it a try! The art is insane! (Scanlation & optional download link below.)

Hey there! I’d like to ask something, if you’re ok with that. In mdzs, a lot of people say that despite JC being so antagonistic towards WWX, he still loves him and misses him. I don’t see how, his actions in any version of the story say the exact opposite to me. Maybe one needs to look between the lines to see it, but I’m horrible at reading others, so if I may bother you and ask what your thoughts are on the subject?

Hey! You are always welcome to ask me questions about MDZS. Especially while we’re all trapped inside.

So I will say I do think Jiang Cheng does indeed love and miss Wei Wuxian. I also think the fandom has a tendency to wipe away Jiang Cheng’s extremely serious flaws (especially in comparison to, say, how they treat Jin Guangyao’s flaws in comparison). Jiang Cheng is very much a foil for Jin Guangyao and for Madame Yu, Wei Wuxian, and Jin Ling (as well as Su She, but that’s perhaps for another meta).

image

Jiang Cheng’s fundamental defense mechanism is projection. We know already that he is insecure–the way his father treated him is horrible. Madame Yu, in turn, was very clearly projecting her own insecurities onto her son:

Jiang Cheng was stuck between his father and his mother. After a moment of hesitation, he moved to his mother’s side. Holding his shoulders, Madam Yu pushed him forward for Jiang FengMian to see, “Sect Leader Jiang, it seems that some things I have to say. Look carefully—this, is your own son, the future head of Lotus Pier. Even if you frown upon him just because I was the one who bore him, his surname is still Jiang! … I don’t believe for one second that you haven’t heard of how the outside people gossips, that Sect Leader Jiang has still not moved on from a certain Sanren though so many years have passed, regarding the son of his old friend as a son of his own; they’re speculating if Wei Ying is your…”

She’s really asking: I’m here, so why don’t you care about me? Do you really prefer a dead Cangse Sanren to me? But the tragic irony is that the way in which she asks this question only pushes Jiang Fengmian away. And yet, she did love him, which Jiang Fengmian realizes when, in the end, he finds out Madame Yu had taught Zidian to obey his command as well as hers. Zidian is a symbol of her pride and heritage.

image

Let’s also look at MXTX’s description of Jiang Cheng’s ideal woman. While it’s not in the novel and is extra material, it’s a perfect example of projection:

naturally beautiful, graceful and obedient, hard-working and thrifty, coming from a respected family, cultivation level not too high, personality not too strong, not too talkative, voice not too loud and must treat Jin Ling nicely.

Is he looking for a wife, or is he looking for Shijie to mother Jin Ling? Because he’s 100% describing Jiang Yanli.

Jiang Cheng does exactly what his mother did to him to Wei Wuxian. He projects his own insecurities, the very ones Madame Yu identified (great job mothering there), onto Wei Wuxian. Why does he hate Wei Wuxian? He hates Wei Wuxian for killing Shijie, when it was Shijie’s own choice to sacrifice herself, and Jiang Cheng then rendered her last sacrifice moot by killing his shixiong. So does Jiang Cheng hate Wei Wuxian, or does he hate himself for killing his sibling in a moment of rage?

It goes deeper, though. Because we see that Jiang Cheng’s fundamental issue is that he hates himself, because he is not as good at cultivation nor as strong as Wei Wuxian, and his father doesn’t love him as much as he loves Wei Wuxian. A child’s mind is going to connect that to “if I’m stronger, Dad will love me.” Jiang Cheng never grew out of this mindset. But what is strength to Jiang Cheng?

It’s protecting the people he loves. So Shijie’s death? He blames himself. One of Jiang Cheng’s most vulnerable moments is when he begs Wei Wuxian to turn away from Yiling and the Wens, because “I can’t protect you.” He wants to protect Wei Wuxian because he couldn’t protect his parents, yet he wants to protect himself more. It’s tragic. What Jin Guangyao said to Jiang Cheng in the temple is true, though of course, it’s not so simple as to be Jiang Cheng’s fault solely. But his insecurities did play a role and were indeed exploited by a cruel, calculating society:

“… Back then, the LanlingJin Sect, the QingheNie Sect, and the GusuLan Sect had already finished fighting over the biggest share. The rest could only get some small shrimps. You, on the other hand, had just rebuilt Lotus Pier and behind you was the YiLing Patriarch, Wei WuXian, the danger of whom was immeasurable. Do you think the other sects would like to see a young sect leader who was so advantaged? Luckily, you didn’t seem to be on good terms with your shixiong, and since everyone thought there was an opportunity, of course they’d add fuels to your fire if they could. No matter what, to weaken the YunmengJiang Sect was to strengthen themselves. Sect Leader Jiang, if only your attitude towards your shixiong was just a bit better, showing everyone that your bond was too strong to be broken for them to have a chance, or if you exhibited just a bit more tolerance after what happened, things wouldn’t have become what they were. Oh, speaking of it, you were also a main force of the siege at Burial Mound…”

Jin Guangyao isn’t wrong here, and unlike Jiang Cheng, he’s aware that society sucks but tries to join it anyways. Jiang Cheng grew up privileged despite his sad home life, and therefore never examined whether society was fair or not (as is reinforced by the early conversation Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian have about Jin Guangyao, in which Wei Wuxian expresses that he likes Jin Guangyao and Jiang Cheng says that, as the son of a whore, Jin Guangyao will only be able to climb so far, yet expresses no deeper concern about this). Jin Guangyao’s tragedy was trying to join society in an effort to prove himself to his father, and Jiang Cheng’s tragedy was not examining himself and his role in society in an effort to prove himself to his father as well, both fathers of whom would be better off ignored. Jiang Cheng did rebuild Lotus Pier, but Wei Wuxian learns that the local people are terrified of Jiang Cheng and hate him, while Jin Guangyao actually did protect the common people, yet Jiang Cheng still has a chance to redeem himself in the end and Jin Guangyao does not, which can be chalked up in great part due to privilege.

image

This isn’t to argue Jiang Cheng is worse than Jin Guangyao, because better/worse is moot in the world of MDZS. The point is that both Jiang Cheng and Jin Guangyao bring about the death of a brother by prioritizing their own wellbeing and proving themselves to the fathers whose approval it is impossible to win (because the problem is with them rather than with Jiang Cheng or Jin Guangyao themselves), would have/did kill a child on the basis of their parentage (Wen Yuan was rescued by Lan Wangji or he would absolutely have been killed, Jin Guangyao does kill A-Song–it doesn’t matter whether or not either of them did/would have done it personally; at the very least they set in motion events they knew would result in a child’s death), and yet both raised and genuinely loved Jin Ling (as Jin Ling himself concludes in the end).

image

But in regards to Jin Ling, Jiang Cheng’s insecurities make it impossible for him to communicate well with the people he loves. He warns Jin Ling not to come back unless he accomplishes something on Dafan Mountain, which almost gets Jin Ling killed trying to prove himself. (I wrote more about that in this meta here.)

After Wei Wuxian’s resurrection, Jiang Cheng proves that he doesn’t hate Wei Wuxian several times despite claiming he does. Firstly? When Jin Guangyao accuses Mo Xuanyu of being Wei Wuxian in the middle of a crowd, Jiang Cheng could easily turn him in  and be rid of him since Jiang Cheng already knows it. And yet, Jiang Cheng does not do so, even when called upon; instead, his indecision is noted. Secondly, he kept Chenqing with him all these years, when he very easily could have destroyed it (which is another parallel to Jin Guangyao, who kept Suibian, an ultimately useless sword); the flute, on the other hand, is a symbol of demonic cultivation and yet Jiang Cheng does not get rid of it. He went so far as to torture other demonic cultivators to death, many of whom are noted to have been innocent, and yet he kept demonic cultivational tools with him, because it was his brother’s–which also, yes, shows how he hates himself and kind of wants to punish himself, too.

And, of course, there’s the sacrifice that Jiang Cheng never reveals (at least not by the novel’s end). He sacrificed his own life to save Wei Wuxian from the Wens, was willing to give up what he always wanted–to lead Lotus Pier and thereby earn his father’s respect–to save Wei Wuxian’s life. Yet, in the end that led to Wei Wuxian sacrificing his golden core for Jiang Cheng, and in the end, Jiang Cheng can’t tell Wei Wuxian for the same reason Wei Wuxian couldn’t tell Jiang Cheng in his first life: it would sound like an excuse. So, again, Jiang Cheng’s pride is getting in the way–yet, at least this time, he is willing to sacrifice looking good and look worse for the sake of letting Wei Wuxian go.

However, I think there’s reason to hope, as I’ve said before. I did not interpret that ending to mean their relationship was over or could never be significantly close again. Wei Wuxian has let go of a lot of his pride and learned some hard lessons about self-sacrifice and protecting people, and the younger generation is making so much room for nuance and kindness and thereby challenging society. I personally assumed they’d have that conversation eventually, but we didn’t need to see it to assume it would happen.

How do you feel Wen Ning's arc was handled? Was him leaving Wei Wuxian at the end too sudden?

I loved Wen Ning’s arc! I actually think his arc is among the best written. It’s about learning to be alive, with a motif of relying on connections to people but also realizing self-worth (he parallels Wei WuXian in this!)

image

If I can recommend this meta by @thisworldgodonlyknows about Wei WuXian and Wen Ning’s relationship, I think it explains Wen Ning’s arc well.

I think Wen Ning came to his own the moment he was spurred by his love and loyalty for Wei WuXian to defy Wei WuXian and tell Jiang Cheng and Lan WangJi the truth about Jiang Cheng’s core. He’d promised Wei WuXian he wouldn’t, but he realized that not telling Jiang Cheng was only harming Wei WuXian by allowing him to sink deeper into his martyr complex tendencies. Which, keep in mind, is something Wen Ning understands well, considering that he and Wen Qing tried in vain to sacrifice themselves to save Wei WuXian, which only resulted in Wen Qing’s death, Wen Ning winding up as a puppet of the Jin sect used for further villainy for thirteen years, and Wei WuXian still got killed. Oh, and the rest of his sect got killed. Which isn’t to say Wen Ning was wrong to sacrifice himself for Wei WuXian but is to say there is definitely a narrative question about whether his lack of self-worth played a role in him sacrificing himself (just like it did for Wei WuXian sacrificing his reputation). Side note: I’d say MDZS condemns society for forcing them into this position, not either of the characters.) But the reason Wen Ning breaks apart from Wei WuXian is because he’s realized the limits of protecting people and tells Jiang Cheng the truth.

image

The reason Wen Ning winds up as a puppet is because he’s had no belief in himself or belief in his strength, so he winds up as a super-strong zombie. But he would never have committed a murder of an innocent on his own–he did not as a Wen, even going so far as to save Jiang Cheng and Wei WuXian at great risk to his own life–but when he gives up his agency, this happens. Him turning himself in to the Jin Sect could only ever have resulted in tragedy because he was giving agency not to Wei WuXian, who truly cared about him and who was not nearly as corrupt as society was (and the Jin Sect at that point is representative of power in society).

His sacrificing himself (but surviving because he’s already dead) for Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling completes his internal need to atone, and so after that, he can truly live (though he’s dead). He does that again not because someone ordered him to do so–no one did–but because it is his own choice. He finds the one member of his family still alive—Wen Yuan—And they got to honor their family and build a centotaph for his sister. He then in extra chapters helps the juniors night hunt. He is not alone, and he’s able to live freely making his own decisions for the first time in his existence, unfettered by any guilt.

why did jin guangyao help rebuild the cloud recesses

Because Lan Xichen was his best friend and because, according to MXTX, Lan Xichen was “the light of his life.” I don’t think it’s any more complex than that.  You can talk about whether he was trying to earn Lan Xichen’s approval, since he never quite felt secure in that, but I don’t think that really takes away from the fact that his chief motivation was just to help his friend.

Xue Yang: A Tragic Study in How Not to Empathy

Or really, the two-way nature of empathy and importance of communication, in which Xue Yang gets an F.

Me: I’ll wait until the donghua’s second season to write on Yi City so I can use gifs.

Me five seconds later: I have major Yi City feels, too bad.

So let’s talk Xue Yang, who at first glance seems the series’ most repugnant character morally (besides perhaps Jin GuangShan). And yet he’s such a direct contrast to Wei WuXian, Jin GuangYao, and Jiang Cheng that on further reads I was struck by how desperate and sad his life was. Not that any of it excuses him, but his motives were not simply “evil for evil’s sake.” As we learn later on, pretty much no one in MDZ (and irl) is evil for evil’s sake, but Xue Yang is absolutely one of the more… chaotic and petty ones. That being said, Xue Yang’s actual motivations were not remotely petty at all.

i love unrequited love, i love blind devotion, i love guard dogs. i love being desperately obsessed with the object of your affections. i love when devotion rots into cruelty, i love when love doesn't know any better, i love when love is ugly. i love defanging and declawing yourself just to be loved. i love when a character will wait for the next time they will be loved like a bird or a dog at their beloved’s door. i love when love is insanity and by the LORD do i love betting on losing dogs

Innocent Love -- WIP

Pairing: Wen Ning x f!reader

Tags/Warnings: pure fluff, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli playing matchmakers, some trauma description, mature content in later chapters, everybody deserves a happy ending

A/N: So the time has finally come for me to post my first fan fiction on tumblr. This will be a canon divergence au. Characters are based on the live series (Chen Qing Ling/The Untamed) both in appearance and back story. I will pick up the story during ep.26 after Wei Wuxian finds Wen Ning. Alive! The pursuit of the Wen Clan's remaining members is cancelled and Wei Wuxian won't become the Yiling Patriarch. Also him and Lan Wangji are together in this because I make the rules.

I'm not promising a quick update as I am busy with my intern year BUT I will be free in two weeks time. I will happily tag anyone who would like to get a reminder when this gets posted!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary: You are the distant cousin of the Lan brothers. Even though you didn't grow up with them, you spent a lot of time in Cloud Recesses. After your parents died, you moved in to Cloud Recesses. Your best friends are Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli.
After the Sunshot Campaign, the members of the Wen Clan are pursued and killed. Wei Wuxian, with the help of his family and the Lan Clan, manages to stop the massacre and save the remaining innocent members of the Wen Clan. Wen Qing and Wen Ning are temporarily moved in to Cloud Recesses to recover. This is when you finally meet the saviors of Wei Wuxian and his siblings. You are indescribably grateful to the Wen siblings, and do everything in your power to help them. However, one unexpected thing happens: you fall in love with the kind and soft-spoken Wen Ning.
While the source material clearly intends Xue Yang to be read as an orphan (perhaps orphaned so young he has no memory of his parents), I think it’s underexplored in fandom that he never ACTUALLY SAYS that his parents DIED, but rather that he was a child without parents.
image
“He had neither dad nor mom nor money” (via the official english translation)
I think there’s something in here worth exploring about the possibility that Xue Yang was abandoned by his parents.
Perhaps he remembers one or both of them and/or the event, perhaps he does not but just has a sense of it having happened, perhaps he has no memories of it at all but it still psychologically impacted his development.
Just about every character in the story can be better understood by looking at how they were raised, and Xue Yang is CERTAINLY not an exception.
There are myriad ways to interpret his childhood (though none of them stable, safe, or cared for), but I have been thinking a LOT lately about how being abandoned by his parents could have shaped him into who he later became.
His behavior in the Villainous Friends extra (wherein he, seemingly arbitrarily, breaks things and antagonizes people and then specifically challenges Jin Guangyao about paying for damages) COULD be interpreted as acting out in a way that’s common for children and teens with a history of abandonment who are testing the waters of just how much their new guardian/s will tolerate. This sort of behavior can be a self fulfilling prophesy as well as an attempt to prove to themselves that their expectations of rejection or punishment are correct.
If Xue Yang has only ever known the world to be a painful place where people reject and abandon him, then that’s how he expects the world to continue behaving. If suddenly someone defies this expectation, it is simultaneously a fascinating and wondrous thing, and also a threat to his worldview. After all, if THIS person can be kind and care for him, then why didn’t anyone else?
If JGY, who at this point is essentially just his handler, can be unconditionally patient with him… then why couldn’t others have been patient with him over much less? And why couldn’t his own parents, who had considerably higher responsibility to him, be as patient as JGY?
It’s much easier to push and push and push until you break the patience and prove your cynicism correct, than it is to grapple with those painful questions. And after all, Jin Guangyao had an exterior force (Jin Guangshan) requiring him to show patience. And once that force was removed, so was Xue Yang. This, perhaps, felt as much like validation as it did betrayal.
There might be a parallel to be made here, too, about how JGY was and felt betrayed/abandoned by his father. This in common might be something that they bonded over.
And of course, as always, there’s Yi City.
Xue Yang expects Xiao Xingchen to abandon him, and his elaborate “revenge” was at least in part in preparation for that anticipated betrayal. He “knows” he will be betrayed and, perhaps unlike what happened with Jin Guangyao, he intends to be ready for it this time. Ready to punish Xiao Xingchen the MOMENT it happens, or ready to convince him not to betray him after all (what is “We’re not so different, I’m not uniquely evil, you’re ending our life together because you think you’re better than me but look! Look! You and I are the same now” if not a deeply misguided and utterly desperate plea?).
At some point he starts hoping it just won’t happen, and stops needing the “revenge” plot. When it starts unraveling before him, he tries for understanding first. What is “Hear my story, THEN decide–” if not begging to be understood?
Of course it doesn’t work.
Xiao Xingchen doesn’t even kill Xue Yang, either; he goes Away. Goes where Xue Yang can’t. If Xue Yang is read as having this particular trigger, Xiao Xingchen’s suicide may feel like abandonment all over again.
Perhaps Xiao Xingchen NOT killing Xue Yang becomes a parallel to Xue Yang’s parents abandoning him to suffer alone instead of keeping him or killing him. Or else maybe Xue Yang’s mother DID try to kill him (drown him or left him out in the cold) and he just managed to survive, in which case Xiao Xingchen NOT trying to kill Xue Yang puts him a cut above even Xue Yang’s own mother/parents.
Final thought:
While I find Xue Yang’s lack of familial connection to the rest of the cast compelling, I also find “what if” scenarios fascinating to explore, and “Xue Yang was abandoned by parents who might still be around during the story” does create some fascinating opportunities for fic.
Such as:
What if Xue Yang was yet another illegitimate son of Jin Guangshan? What if he knew but Jin Guangyao didn’t? What if Jin Guangyao knew but Xue Yang didn’t? What if Jin Guangshan himself knew? That would really put the insistent protections into a very weird light (is there a heart in there? Or did he think he could string Xue Yang along like he did Jin Guangyao? Or was Xue Yang blackmailing him?)
OR
What if Xue Yang was the illegitimate son of Chang Cian? It certainly puts a spin on that entire scenario. Little Xue Yang has another reason to want to please this man, and a further reason to feel betrayed by the abuse. Chang Cian not even recognizing him. Xue Yang taking revenge on the entire family because they ALL wronged him in a way he can’t articulate. Because they got to live the life he could have if he’d been wanted.
Certainly none of this is canon, but it’s not TERRIBLY far beyond the bounds of canon either, and makes for some juicy food for fic.
The air was heavy around them. Suddenly there was a bright flash and a loud clap of thunder. Xiao Xingchen gasped in surprise beside him as Xue Yang felt a large droplet of water hit his cheek and trickle down. He looked up, only now noticing the dark clouds scudding across the night sky. Raindrops began to play a tinny tune on the stones around them, random notes here and there that began to blend as the patter of rain increased.
The Air Was Heavy Around Them. Suddenly There Was A Bright Flash And A Loud Clap Of Thunder. Xiao Xingchen
(...) Xue Yang wasn’t sure when Xiao Xingchen’s hand had slid down from his forearm to his hand, but as they stumbled their way through the town and he guided Xiao Xingchen through the maze of coffins in their courtyard, he became aware that their fingers had slid together and they were gripping each other so tightly his fingers were becoming numb.
He didn’t quite know what to make of it, but also didn’t want to let go or draw Xiao Xingchen’s attention to it, so he kept holding on tightly as he stepped over the high threshold into the house. He immediately turned and placed his left hand gently but firmly against Xiao Xingchen’s chest to slow him down...
THIS is an excerpt from The taste of rain on skin, by @fieri-sentio-et-excrucior and with the incredible art by @wrathyforest, two amazing and talented artists whose work I recommend you all to check!!
I'm honoured to know such wonderful people and I wish nothing but the best to all of you. Keep writing, keep drawing, keep creating things that make me happy please! >w<
i love violin covers
i was listening to joel sunny's covers while i wrote a warm up drabble
ray x reader
when no one's around
"ray!" you smile so brightly when you lean out the window, tucking the hair that the wind blew into your face aside, staring down at the pretty gardener with a love sick expression.
"good evening, prince /ss" he feels shy, but reaches out his arms to you, inviting you to sling your legs over the windowsill and carefully hop into his arms and down.
it's cold outside, and he insists you take the magenta coat - and it feels heavy, and smells of flowers and him, and for a moment you wonder if its almost what hugging him would feel like. your conversation is brief, it's not important or interesting to the outside world, you're sure of that, but to you it feels like floating above clouds. his voice is low, a barely there whisper, a hesitant conversation. just in case she finds you. just in case you suddenly hate him.
all the flowers in the garden couldn't compare to his beauty, in your eyes at least. the longer you speak the more confident he gets, flourishing and blooming, speaking poetry with a tender smile. somewhere someone is playing a violin, it's so far away you can barely hear the tune clearly. but it makes you want to dance with him either way, even at his sheepish "i... don't know how to dance." you gently hold one of his hands regardless, resting the other on his chest.
"neither do i. but we don't have to perfect at it."
there's enough space to dance. to move slowly to the sound of the violin, to spin sometimes. he's stiff at first, stuttering apologies every time he trips or steps on your shoe. but slowly he relaxes, he learns a few tricks, he could dip you down but he's worried about dropping you.
you don't really remember when the violin stops. you're too invested in sweet conversation as you dance.
the night goes too quickly, he knows you'll be tired tomorrow, so he takes you back to the window. the window you blow kisses from while he works to watch him blush. or speak to him from. or turn love letters into paper aeroplanes.
the window isn't that high. but he lifts you up anyway. your feet can't touch the paved floor, but you know if he leaned up and you down you could kiss him so very easily.
so you do. its tender, he doesn't know where to put his hands so he just rests them against the firm window, and you cup his cheeks so softly he wants to cry. and when he pulls back his face is red, and your sure yours is as well.
"see you tomorrow, ray."
"y.. yeah... tomorrow."
kiss his cheek goodnight before you slip back into the castle, confirm your promise about tomorrow to the dazed boy. he'll watch you leave with a smile, he'd wave if you look back to do so as well.
your sweet prince
and of course.
you're his sweet prince/ss.
i think a lot about the algerian national anthem, how it says :لم يكن يصغى لنا لما نطقنا (when we spoke no one listened to us). how '1 2 3 viva l'agerie' used to be 'we want to be free, viva l'Algérie'. a grand total of 5.6 million algerians were killed over 132 years.
i often see comparisons made between Algeria and Palestine, especially since israel actually worked with france because israel supported the colonisation of algeria and france literally took tips on how to torture algerians from them
the point i wanted to make here was i very much think these comparisons have strength. as well, to make the point that algeria has been free for 62 years. and one day Palestine will be free. even if it takes another 132 years, never give up hope, its never too late, its never too far gone. when we look in history books, we can see so many countries who fought for their freedom
