Tomorrow I’m going up to Brooklyn to write and record some songs with a very talented woman named who plays under the moniker “Moon” (moonmoon.bandcamp.com). I’ve been wanting to work with her ever since I saw her play about a year and a half ago at DBA and am basically forcing her to by driving up to Brooklyn and showing up at her door. We’ve never really talked besides on the internet.
I’ve been a lot more fascinated with spontaneous projects like this since about two years ago Berg and Nathan, two good friends of mine that play in a band called And And And, and I decided to write, record and mix a full-length album in the woods of Oakland Oregon in a trailer that Nathan’s dad owns. At the time, I had just met Nathan and Berg, and they were relatively strangers to me when we went in. Really all I knew about Nathan was the album he recorded that year that my friend Nick gave me called “From The Fire Where I Was Born” and I couldn’t stop listening to it. Then one winter when I was visiting Eugene for the holidays I saw And And And play at the infamous Red Room show they were thrown out of for breaking a tom with giant table legs attached to it.
Nathan and I started talking at the after party about the trailer and that he had recorded that album in only a couple of days, isolated and alone in the woods. This, of course, got me going and after an impromptu jam session on acoustic guitars in Berg’s bathroom we discovered we both somehow had memorized lyrics to one another’s songs prior to ever meeting each other we decided the three of us would go to the woods.
A day and a half with an 8 track and a handful of odd instruments, we came up with an album called “Bear Country” that can be listened to in its entirety at myspace.com/bdaygirlz or a couple of tracks are below. Some of the cuts on the album are still some of my favorite songs.

Description: The first (?) album by Michelle Zauner, who would later become Japanese Breakfast. I bought this at her show in Eugene in 2006, which I think was at a pizza place.
