RWBY Relationships Tag Game

Okay, this has probably already been done but A tagging game for fun while waiting for V9, and to celebrate all our different tastes in characters & relationships !

For each character in RWBY : share your favorite platonic and/or romantic relationships for that character !

Doesn't have to be canon at all : if you love Yang & Emerald go for it, if you love Freezerburn go for it ! And if it's canon that great as well : if you love Emerald City go for it, if you love Bumbleby go for it ! No judgment from my side whatsoever, just share whatever relationship catch your eye & tickles your interest.

You don't have to do every character, but don't hesitate to do a good amount if you're in the mood ! Just skip characters you aren't interested in, but otherwise background characters are just as welcome as main teams.

I'll start with a reblog, and tag some people at the end. If you don't wanna play, no pressure ! I'm not close to many people so I'll just tag some people I think are cool, sorry if it seems like it's coming out of nowhere :') Just ignore my tag if you don't wanna join in !

I can't even fanthom the sheer CONFIDENCE with which these people qualify RG shippers as gross 30 yo when this ship is just two wholesome children trying their best. There is nothing sexual about it, there's no power imbalance between Oscar & Ruby, they respect each other, they just finger-gun each other or blush a bit. How do they even make that jump to "ew gross" I genuinely CAN'T understand

Also you know they're not even worth it when they outright say "if you see me attack people who are just existing & liking a sweet ship between 2 teenagers, don't call me out." Someone really missed the "having differing likes and preferences doesn't allow you to attack a person" classes uh

Two: You're telling people to mind their business as you harass and attack rosegarden shippers who are *looks at scribbles on hand* minding their business?

Three: When people call you out on your bullshit, you claim that they "proved your point" and that they're the bad guys for... defending themselves?

Four: This person ALSO did a post asking what people's unpopular RWBY opinions were and added, "No HTDM!" as if they weren't part of it.

I know Ozpin is intended as this sort-of morally grey Dumbledore; but he's missing Dumbledore's main flaw of voluntarily withdrawing from the fight in favor of letting a chosen one kind deal with a mad man alone because "destiny"

It's just wild to me, constantly, to see how much Ozpin's decisions are warped in some people's mind. He never asked the kids to go toe-to-toe with Salem herself; he gave people the training needed to fight against Grimm : creatures who always existed even outside of Salem's control and WILL attack people regardless of what he does. He told them about Salem because they were attacked by her hunchmen and they needed to know, that wasn't a subtext for "now go fight Salem herself." That wasn't the terms of their training; which is why is lying isn't actually as evil as some people make it out to be.

Is Ozpin flawed ? Yes. Does he always take the best decisions ? Not really. Was the lying one of his flaws ? Yes. The root of it was human and he had good intentions (on top of his trauma & trust issues let's be honest) but it was still fundamentally flawed in several aspects. Was it evil... Not really ?

I know Ozpin is meant as this morally grey character, who's sketchy and manipulative if still well-meaning; but honestly with what we were given I'd call him a very pale grey at most, so it's even more mind-boggling for me to see people calling him pure evil.

...Or say that he would have no problem taking over Oscar's body completely.

I have recently learned that during Volume 6 (and possibly 7) parts of the RWBY FNDM believed that when Oscar was missing Ozpin came back and now was now controlling Oscar’s body pretending to be him.

And think this is a reflection of the FNDM’s belief that Ozpin is evil, because that’s pretty fucking evil; and not something Ozpin would do

The way that each Schnee family member responds to trauma perfectly illustrates the four main types: fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. Fight:

Weiss’s response has always been to fight. Those who are stuck in a constantly activated “fight” response to trauma tend to act entitled, angry, and contemptuous, which is what Weiss was like at the beginning of Volume One. “Fight” types typically see themselves as perfect and morally superior to others as a defense mechanism against abandonment, which, unfortunately, tends to perpetuate their loneliness. As Weiss grows and begins to heal from her trauma through healthy relationships, she is able to use her “fight” response in healthier ways. For example, instead of completely removing herself from the family, she intends to reclaim the family name and restore its honor, which is a great goal to have and one that gives her purpose. As Blake has said, the word that best describes Weiss is “defiance”.

Flight:

Winter’s response to trauma was flight. Her goal was to get away from Jacques Schnee as quickly as possible, and her chosen escape route was the Atlas military. “Flight” types tend to have obsessive-compulsive tendencies, believing that order and perfection will keep them safe. They lose themselves by constantly being busy so that they do not have to present with their emotions, which they don’t know how to deal with. Winter still seems to struggle with actually confronting her feelings, but as she works through her trauma, we begin to see a healthy manifestation of her “flight” response: she has gained the distance needed to create her own destiny.

Freeze:

Willow Schnee, knowing that there is no escape from her husband and that resistance is futile, did the only thing she knew she could do: she froze. “Freeze” types tend to withdraw into themselves and dissociate as much as possible in order to numb the pain. This is learned helplessness. They self isolate, avoiding others and using whatever method of distraction best distances them from reality. In Willow’s case, she uses alcohol. While Willow is still stuck in her “freeze” state, we see one positive way she has used it: she has been able to gain an advantage over Jacques Schnee by placing cameras all over the estate. Only someone like Willow, who presents as helpless and detached, would be able to get away with such a thing without being caught.

Fawn:

Finally, we have Whitley Schnee. Unlike his sisters, he doesn’t have the Schnee family semblance or the talent that would have allowed him to join the military or enroll in an academy. As the last of the children, he must be aware that his father is going to hold on to him tightly and not let him get away like the other two. So what does he do? He “fawns”. “Fawn” types seek safety by forfeiting all of their needs, preferences, and boundaries in order to become exactly what the abuser wants them to be. They essentially try to do damage control by complying with the demands of others and by trying to be as agreeable as possible. These are the codependent types. Whitley, knowing he was left alone by his sisters and cannot depend on his detached mother, must do everything in his power to get along with Jacques Schnee so that he can survive. That’s where he still is, and we have yet to see how he progresses.

Qrow becoming a father figure to Mercury is such an underrated scenario it hurts me. Besides Qrow's personal villain being Tyrian who is tormenting Mercury as we speak, their individual narratives, albeit on opposite sides of the war, complement each-other so well.

Qrow saw no value in his life because of his semblance bringing harm to those he loved so he isolated himself in addiction and pledged unconditional loyalty to someone who lied and (to an extent) used him. Mercury had his semblance taken away from him for being "weak", which led him to reduce his personal value to strength, latching onto anyone to whom his skillset as an assassin can be useful in exchange for safety.

At least an interaction over their self hatred leading them to unhealthily follow people who gave them value and purpose, even if treated as a means to an end.
