Suicide, a Crime of Loneliness

Nadia Murad, featured in Alexandria Bombach’s 2018 Sundance Film Festival Directing Award winning documentary On Her Shoulders, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last week alongside Dr. Denis Mukwege, “for their work to highlight and eliminate the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war.” 

Documented in On Her Shoulders, 23-year-old Nadia Murad leads a harrowing but vital crusade: to find the most influential platforms in the world and speak out on behalf of the embattled Yazidi community who face mass extermination by ISIS militants. Having narrowly escaped with her own life, Nadia must now relentlessly recount on radio shows, at rallies, and even on the floor of the United Nation’s general assembly her ordeal as a Yazidi sex slave and witness to her family’s brutal killings. Though excruciating, she forces herself to revisit these realities again and again. For without her testimony, the genocide happening right in front of the world’s eyes might go completely unnoticed.

Electra with Kristin Scott Thomas and Medea with Helen McCrory are the best stage productions I’ve ever seen. So powerful, moving  and heartbreaking. I adore British actresses.

A falling stream of water will break into droplets due to the Plateau-Rayleigh instability. Small disturbances can create a wavy perturbation in the falling jet. Under the right conditions, the pressure caused by surface tension will be larger in the narrower regions and smaller in the wider ones. This imbalance will drive flow toward the wider regions and away from the narrower ones, thereby increasing the waviness in the jet. Eventually, the wavy jet breaks into droplets, which enclose the same volume of water with less surface area than the perturbed jet did. The instability is named for Joseph Plateau and Lord Rayleigh, who studied it in the late 19th century and showed that a falling jet of a non-viscous fluid would break into droplets if the wavelength of its disturbance was larger than the jet’s circumference.  (Image credit: N.
