The wearing of green carnations by gay men in the Victorian Era was popularized by author Oscar Wilde who encouraged his friends to wear the flowers to social events as a secret code of recognition and a symbol of unity

I suspect some of you already knew about this, but having just recently learned of it, my heart immediately swelled about three sizes too large, a condition that could only be remedied by sharing this information forward once more.
