Her co-creator specified that Kamala’s powers aren’t supposed to be cute, and that too often female superheroes need pretty and palatable powers. Her shapeshifting is integral to how she views herself and how she deals with her self-image issues. Changing her powers like this will change the character in such a fundamental way, that I don’t think this adaptation stands a chance (not to mention a culturally significant bracelet she has as an heirloom is now a piece of alien tech which is a whole issue I don’t have the specific cultural knowledge to elaborate on).
