Jay was back at work the next day, his heat had finished the previous evening and he was feeling up to working again. However, he was still yet to return home and had stayed at Sunoo’s instead. After hearing what Y/N had said, he was feeling a little uncomfortable about confronting May again. Even though deep down Jay knew the truth already, hearing it from someone else was scary.
So instead of sitting around feeling sorry for himself, Jay had gotten up extra early and headed to work to open up the café. He arrived at seven, knowing there might be a possibility that you could drop by on your way to work. Jay busied himself with cleaning and tidying, he was feeling the exhaustion already but he needed to keep his brain busy at work instead of dwelling on things at home.
Glancing up at the clock, he noted the time nearing seven thirty, if he was correct then you would probably arrive soon if you were going to. He hated May for changing your hours, he hated her for giving you extra work, it seemed that every decision May made was pushing you further from him.
“Jay!” The bell at the top of the door chimed as you rushed inside, the wind blowing the door shut behind you. Your cheeks were flushed and Jay noted the way you were breathing heavily as if you’d been running.
He smiled tentatively at you. There was half of him that wanted to run into your arms and engulf himself in your scent, that was the hybrid inside him, but the human side of him knew he needed to restrain himself as to not scare you off. He hated that he had that rational side of him.
“Y/N, I was hoping you’d come.” Jay blushed whilst he said that, he didn’t want to sound desperate but he couldn’t help himself.
“Sorry I’m a little late, I couldn’t sleep last night so I slept through my alarm,” you sighed, brushing a hand through your hair. Jay took in your appearance, your makeup was minimal and you hair was unbrushed, but you still looked pretty to him. From where he was stood, he could smell your scent easily and he noted that you weren’t wearing perfume today. Jay could just smell your natural scent, it was driving him crazy, he was still highly sensitive from his heat and anything you did was enough to trigger him again.
“It’s ok,” he smiled, fiddling with the apron around his waist as you leant against the counter. “Do you want a drink?”
“A mocha today please,” you said as you watched him busy himself at the coffee machine. “So, I think we should talk now whilst we can, get it all out on the table.”
“Yeah,” he didn’t look away from the drink he was making. “I want to apologise first though, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about me and May. It’s weird between us, and it’s confusing between me and you. But the other night when we called, I didn’t know what to do, and the only person I could think of was you, May never once crossed my mind. I’m still sorry, I should’ve told you.”
You sighed softly, leaning your chin on your hands as your elbows rested on the counter. Jay finished your drink, sliding it over to you before tucking his hands in his pockets, looking anywhere but at your eyes.
“I get it Jay, you don’t need to explain.” You passed a note over to him, tucking a second into the tip jar, “it’s done now, I’m not going to dwell on it. I was mad at first, but I’m more mad at her.”
“Are still you mad at me?” He asked quietly, finally looking down at you, eyes wide.
“I was Jay, so mad,” you closed your eyes and took a breath before standing up straight to look at him. “But like I said, what’s done is done. Just be honest with me Jay, why did you want me during your heat and not May?”
He fell silent for a moment, scanning your face as you waited for his answer. Why did he want you? He didn’t really know, he hadn’t thought about it too much because he knew it would scare him.
“I don’t know entirely, but when my heat started you were literally all I could think about,” he said before thinking, before realising the weight of his words. “And that one time, when you came here and hugged me, the only thing that calmed me down was your scent.”
“Oh,” you breathed out, processing his words. “My scent?”
“Yeah, I’m not sure if I’m ready to unpack what all this means yet, but just having your scent around me was enough to make me feel grounded. Like even now, having you near is making me more calm than I’ve been in a long time.” Jay put his palms down on the counter, leaning into them a little, “there’s so much else to worry about now before I can think about what all this means. I think I might explode if I try to.”
“I get that,” you smiled softly, leaning over and placing a hand over his. Jay wanted to pull away, he didn’t want you to know how much your touch affected him because, as soon as you hand touched his, he relaxed completely. “We don’t need to think about that yet, what we need to do is figure out what to do with May.”
Jay frowned, his head shaking gently, making his hair fall over his eyes, “I don’t know what to do. I can’t leave, my parents wouldn’t understand, May would fight it.”
“I can’t let you stay like this though Jay, it’s just going to get worse,” you squeezed his hand softly.
“I can’t leave,” he repeated. “Everything I own is hers, I have nothing if I leave.”
“You’ve got us Jay, me and the others are here for you,” Jay’s eyes started to well up but he blinked the tears away quickly. “We’d never let anything happen to you, you know that right?”
“I know, and I’m forever grateful.” He slipped his hand out from yours, wiping away his tears and smiling at you. You saw right through it though, he was putting on a front.
“I can’t force you to do anything Jay,” the clock was nearing eight, you needed to get to work soon. “But can you do one thing for me?”
Jay caught your gaze, eyes glossy, and it took all of your willpower not to climb over the counter and hold him. You could feel your phone blowing up, probably May wondering why you weren’t at work yet, but nothing could take your attention from Jay as he nodded in response to your question.
“Anything May asks you to take, medication wise, tell me straight away. Even if you just text me the name, tell me what it is. And please, don’t take anything. Flush it down the toilet, do whatever, just don’t take it, ok?” You held his gaze, making sure he understood each word.
Jay nodded once again, “I promise, I won’t take anything.”
“Good boy,” you breathed out in relief. It wasn’t a lot, but it was a start to a solution, it was a step in the right direction. “We’ll figure this out, I’ll be here for you in this. Just trust me, I’ll do everything I can.”
“I trust you Y/N,” he said quietly. You were forever amazed how quickly Jay turned into the shy and meek boy that you’d seen at the beginning, you wondered if this was how he acted around May. “Thank you.”
“You don’t need to thank me,” you held your cup tight as you tucked your bag over your shoulder. “I’ve got to go, I’m late for work already. But I’ll text you later, ok? If you need anything, don’t hesitate to message me, I’ll always reply to you.”
