It bugs me that so many people's default example of published fanfic is 50 Shades of Grey.
What about West Side Story, a famous modern AU of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet?
What about Dante's Inferno, a self-insert RPF if I've ever seen one?
What about Wicked, a pre-canon AU of The Wizard of Oz?
Hell, what about Percy Jackson? There's definitely an argument to be made that that's a modern AU of various Greek myths.
Humans have been writing fanfic as long as they have been telling stories. In about the year 20 BC, our dear Roman poet Ovid wrote the Heroides, a series of aggrieved "letters" from the female characters of famous myths to their respective male heroes. Are you telling me that Ovid, writing a letter from the perspective of Queen Dido to Aeneas -- Aeneas, whose fantastical adventures were put into poem by Virgil -- wasn't writing an outsider-POV fic? A fic that is, in fact, translated in Latin classes world-wide today!
There is so much famous fanfic out there, but people tend to forget that it is fanfic once it becomes mainstream enough. And as a consequence of that, people who aren't into fandom don't see how beautiful fanfic is, and some members of fandom feel shame associated with writing and reading fic. But fanfic is beautiful, and it is something humans have always done, and it is nothing to be ashamed about.
So if you ever find yourself in a situation to give an example of published fic, think outside the box. Remember that published fanfics hide in plain sight; once they're famous enough, we no longer think of them as fanfic. And never forget that fanfic is a very, very old human tradition, and your ancestors who partook in it would not have wanted you to feel ashamed of it.
@mysticismmess @hymnsofheresy this is us right here, isnât it?
yesterday for April Foolâs my workplace had a short training article on recognizing computer-generated faces from real ones and one of the tricks mentioned was âcount the teethâ and I just wanted to say that itâs both ironic and kind of horrifying how society has unwittingly cycled right back to IF YE MEET A MAN ON THE ROAD, COUNT HIS FINGERS LEST YE DEAL UNKNOWING WITH A FAEÂ
One of the most life-changing things I ever learned came from Mythbusters, where they tested and proved (with cognitive testing puzzles and reaction time tests) that lying down and resting with the intention to sleep STILL provided significant mental benefits over just staying awake, even if a person couldnât fall asleep in the amount of time they had.Â
It helps me to actually sleep to know that just lying down with my eyes closed is still doing me some good, and helps me to not freak out/beat myself up when I stay up later than intended. Any amount of rest is better than no rest!
So if you didnât know thatâŚnow you do
no but how much audacity and sheer entitlement do you have to have to tell people they need to stop posting their darkfic and porn fic and any other fic you donât like to ao3 so you can have a safe space when ao3 was literally created as a safe space for writers to post their content without fear of it being randomly wiped out by pro-censorship assholes with an agenda like what has happened to plenty of other fic archives before?
âbut a lot of us see ao3 as a safe space to get away from that kind of nasty contentâ - lol you can see the middle of a busy interstate as a safe space all you want too but that doesnât mean that you get to walk into the road and scream at all the cars going by that theyâre the ones infringing on your safe space either
ao3 is not, has never been, and will never be a site meant for nothing but childrenâs stories. you can âsee itâ like that as much as you want but thereâs a difference between fiction and reality and that view of what ao3 is like is as fictional as the stories posted on it.
Youâre asexual? Awesome! Iâm bisexual. No one believes I exist either. *fist-bump*
The best response yet to my coming out as asexual (which was followed by an entertaining discussion on how best to harness the powers of invisibility that we so obviously possess)
