The camp ended and everyone headed back home to their clubs for their next matches, sad to be leaving each other but it was only a month until the next camp against South Africa and then Denmark.Â
Kyra, Courtney and Astrid had returned to training at Hammarby, quickly preparing for their next match in only four days' time. It was going to be one of the quickest turnarounds for a match Astrid had ever had but she was ready to jump back into training and get onto that pitch.Â
On their second day of training, before they had even begun their warm up, Astrid and Kyra had been approached by the clubâs social media manager as they were walking through the halls together.
âGod morgon tjejer." (Good morning girls) She waved to them as they got closer.Â
âHallĂ„.â (Hello) Kyra smiled, slowing down her speed to meet her halfway.Â
âGod morgon.â Astrid spoke with a bright smile.
âBefore you start training today, could we film a quick video with some questions? For the instagram page.â The woman spoke with a heavy accent.Â
âJa, of course.â Astrid nodded, looking over at Kyra who was nodding yes to her as well.
âPerfekt. Come with me please.â She gestured back down to where she came from, the two Australians following close behind.Â
They were led to an empty pitch, not far from where the rest of their team were chatting before they began warming up. Two chairs were placed in front of a camera where the two girls had been led, sitting next to each other in their warm jackets, trying to block out the changing weather and cold breeze.Â
After being told what they were doing and briefed what to say, they started rolling.Â
âHi! Iâm Astrid Taylor.â Astrid waved to the camera.Â
âIâm Kyra Cooney-Cross.â Kyra waved with a smile.Â
âAnd today weâre going toâŠâ Astrid looked at Kyra.
âTake a best friend quiz and see how well we know each other.â The older girl finished the sentence. The social media manager handed them each some cards and instructed Kyra to go first.Â
âOkay, easy one. When is my birthday?â They were now facing each other and Kyra could see slight panic forming on Astridâs face. âYou better know this.â She raised a brow at her.Â
âI do, I do. Uhhhhh.â She lifted her head to the sky, pretending to think even though she knew the answer. âFebruary 15th, 2002.â Astrid looked back at the girl who was smiling.Â
âThatâs correct. One point to you.â Kyra nodded.Â
âYay. Whenâs mine?â Astridâs eyes flicked down to the card then back up to Kyraâs.
âApril 13th, 2004.â Kyra spoke confidently.Â
âWell done.â Astrid nodded with a smile.Â
âOkay, when did I make my Matildaâs debut?â Kyra read from the card before looking up.Â
âOh shit. Uhhhhhh.â Astrid had to actually think about this. âI know it was like mid 2021.â She looked at Kyra who was nodding. âAnd it was against Denmark?â She tapped her chin. âI wasnât even on the team yet so itâs not like I was there to know, but I did watch it at home. Is that good enough?â Astrid pleaded with Kyra.
âIs it?â Kyra looked to the manager.Â
âHalf a point.â She responded.Â
âYes! Iâll take it.â Astrid smiled. âWhen was it though?â
â10th of June.â Kyra nodded at her.Â
âRight. When was mine? This will be easy cause you were there and it wasnât that long ago.â Astrid argued but waited for Kyra to respond.Â
â9th of April, 2022. AND you scored your first goal too, which is just crazy.â Kyra complimented the girl across from her who blushed slightly but moved on quickly.Â
âAnother point to you. How many goals have I scored with the Matildas?â Astrid asked the next question with a smirk.Â
âUhhhhâŠâ Kyra filtered through her brain for the answer. âIâm gonna say 5 or 6 maybe?â She looked hopefully at Astrid.Â
âIt was 5, so far.â Astrid smiled as she waited for Kyra to ask the next one.Â
âPoint for me. How many siblings do I have? And what are their names?â Kyra asked with a smile.Â
âEasy. Three sisters.â She looked at Kyra who nodded. âMia, Shani and Mali?â She raised her brow hopefully.
âAnother point to you.â Kyra nodded.
âFinal questions, because from the looks of it,â She paused and both girls looked over to where their team was beginning to warm up in the background. âWeâre technically late to training.â Astrid laughed towards the camera. âOkay, what are your three favourite qualities of mine?â
âIt does not say that!â Kyra laughed and leant forward to check Astridâs card, finding the question was true. âUgh, okay. I would say⊠you're very goofy, you have an incredible strike from both feet and⊠youâre always very positive. You have an ability to bring the energy up in everyone without even doing much.â Kyra spoke and Astrid felt it very hard to not blush at her, heart melting at her words.Â
âOh my god, youâre so sweet.â Astrid playfully pushed her shoulder. âFinish this off will you, please?â Astrid nodded to the final cue card in Kyraâs hands.Â
âAlright, how would you describe me in five words?â Kyra confidently held up five fingers, ready for Astrid to begin.Â
âOoooo, okay. Hilarious, quick, silly, determined andâŠ.â She trailed off as she watched Kyra drop a finger at each word, only one finger remaining. âBright.âÂ
âBright?â Kyra smiled but was slightly lost.
âYou just like, are never dull, or down. Youâre always smiling and just, bright.â Astrid creates a gesture with her hands, making both girls laugh in their seats. Once they settled they looked up to see the manager telling them to wind things up.
âI think you won. But only by like half a point.â Astrid collected herself, looking at Kyra.Â
âStill counts.â Kyra shrugged proudly. âAnyway, we better get going and get to training.â Kyra turned to the camera and then to Astrid.Â
âLetâs go.â Astrid smiled before they both got up and pretended to run off to their team.Â
âCut. Thank you.â Their social media manager thanked them as they removed their mics before saying goodbye and finally heading off to their warm ups.Â
After training hard for the past few days it was finally game day against RosengĂ„rd, Teaganâs current team and Charliâs previous one before going on loan to Vittsjö a few months ago. Although RosengĂ„rd were tough opponents already, Astrid knew it would be even tougher with Teagan in goal against her. She knew how Astrid played and where she liked to go for goals from being in training together, but this is what happens when you play for club and country, sometimes you have to go against your friends and alter playing styles to come out on top.Â
None of the three girls had been selected for the Hammarby starting XL but they were at least on the substitute bench and they would likely get put on later, Astrid especially. She didnât mind the âsuper-subâ reputation she had earned, always being able to deliver towards the end of games, but she would also like to start in more games and gain more minutes with her club.Â
The game started and within 17 minutes they had secured a goal and only a few minutes later a second in the 25th minute by the same player. Going into halftime they were buzzing, but still determined to keep going and secure the win because they knew RosengĂ„rd would come back fighting. And they did.Â
Kyra had been subbed on at around 60 minutes, Astrid not far behind at 70 minutes, coming to the left forward position with Kyra behind her in the midfield; it was time for them to make some magic. The coaches knew how good Astrid and Kyra were together, and how effortlessly they could pass the ball, wordlessly connecting with each other, proving them very useful subs in the later half of the game.Â
Kyra had battled the ball from the RosengĂ„rd midfielders, Astrid watching her and making a run closer to goal, trying to escape their tough defence. Once she had found enough empty space up near the corner, Kyra launched the ball to her, Astrid catching it with her chest and rolling it down to her feet. Immediately a defender found her again and she paused with the ball at her feet. She had two options here; be quick with her feet and dance around them with the ball. OR she could take inspiration from her national teammate, Caitlin Foord, and try for a nutmeg to get around her. Letâs just say Astrid was feeling adventurous today.Â
She made quick eye contact with the defender, both paused before looking back down at the ball. She moved her left foot to resume her play, making it look like she was going around the RosengÄrd player, instead shooting it through her and darting around the frozen player, catching the ball with her foot and heading for the goal.
She kept running with it, too risky to pass it down to anyone and deciding to go alone as she inched closer to a ready Teagan, expecting Astrid to take her regular shot with her right foot but scoop it to hit the left side of the net. But Astrid knew she would be expecting that so instead she struck powerfully, still with her right boot, but let it go directly to the right side of the net, watching as Teagan jumped for the left and missed the ball completely.
And in the 87th minute, the net rippled and the home crowd cheered, Astrid running straight for Kyra as she always did, jumping onto her when they met.Â
âSHEâS BACK!!!!â Kyra screamed in her ear as she caught her, holding her close as the rest of the team joined, patting Astrid on the head and cheering her on. âYou fucking nutmeged her!â Kyra spoke into Astridâs ear, shaking her shoulders slightly as the group of players parted, returning to their spots.Â
âI know. Cait will be proud.â Astrid smiled proudly, before parting with Kyra to go back to her position for the last few minutes of the game. As soon as the whistle blew, the Hammarby bench cheered and the team began to shake hands with their opponents.Â
âGood game.â The first player Astrid made her way to was Teagan in the goal, putting her hand out for a fist bump against her gloves.Â
âNice shot. Wasnât expecting that.â Teagan laughed before they pulled each other into a hug. âIâll catch up with you later.â Teagan pulled back, nodding towards where both teams had started their separate huddles, Astrid following her gaze and turning back to Teagan.Â
âOf course! Bye.â They shared another fist bump before they jogged over to their huddles, Astrid slotting in between Kyra and Courtney, waiting for the coach and captain to speak about the game and their win. After the huddle was done, the team took their lap around the pitch to thank the fans for coming and supporting. The three Aussies were walking around the pitch, Kyra and Astrid now wearing jackets Courtney had given them, still not used to the cooler weather in Sweden. Astrid was chatting with the two girls when Kyra nudged her shoulder and pointed out a sign in the crowd.Â
âAstrid Taylor/No. 13 Can I please have your jersey? (Youâre my favourite⊠shhhh)â
A little girl, no older than 8, had been holding the sign over the barricade, waiting for her to spot it, eyes lighting up when Astrid finally did. Her heart instantly melted and she walked closer to where she was standing.Â
âHello.â Astrid smiled sweetly to the young player.Â
âHi.â The girl spoke shyly with a Swedish accent.Â
âAm I really your favourite?â She leant closer to the little girl who nodded with wide eyes. âThank you! Well, I wonât tell the others then, but neither can you. If you promise to keep it between us⊠you can have my shirt. Deal?â Astrid grinned at her.Â
âDeal.â The girl spoke with a big smile. Astrid stood up again, unzipping her jacket and holding it between her legs. She was glad to have her long sleeve on underneath, shielding her from the wind once she took off the jersey on top. She slipped her jacket back on before holding the shirt out, grabbing a pen from her mum and signing her name and Hammarby number on the front before giving it to her.Â
âTack!â (Thank you!) The girl squealed while looking at the shirt. Her mum held out her phone and passed it to Astrid with the camera open.
âVarsĂ„god!â (Youâre welcome!) Astrid spoke before snapping a selfie with the young girl and her family, passing the phone back, waving goodbye and walking back to Kyra and Courtney who were waiting by the tunnel for her.Â
âThat was the cutest thing Iâve ever seen.â Courtney remarked as they all walked towards the home side changerooms.
âThat was the nicest Iâve ever seen you be.â Kyra spoke from the other side and Astridâs jaw dropped, giving the older girl a light smack on the arm. âJokes.â
âYou are so annoying, Kyra Lillee Cooney-Cross.â Astrid scoffed at the aforementioned girl whose jaw had dropped; Courtney stifled a laugh at Kyraâs reaction and the full name drop.
âAnd youâre not? Astrid Mae Taylor.â Kyra fired back quickly, Astrid had the same reaction, eyes wide at Kyra.Â
âHow dare y-â Astrid moved forward to hit Kyra again but Courtney held her arms back and pulled her away from Kyra.
âEnough, you two! Youâre acting like an old married couple or something, my godâ Courtney mumbled the last sentence as she pushed Astrid into the changing room, Kyra stalking in close behind. The closer they got, the more playful they became with one another. And boy was it annoying Courtney.Â
She was very glad that they didnât in fact live with each other, even if the bickering didnât last long, it would be a nightmare to live with the two of them under the same roof. She dealt with it enough at training, outside of training and even more at national camp, especially when you add Charli into the mix; the three of them were known to be annoying, playful and goofy off the pitch, often roping some of the other younger girls into their plans and tiktoks while they had time off.Â
This was one of the main reasons Astrid loved Matildas camps. Not only did she get the honour of playing for her country and her family; she got to spend all of her time with the girls she quickly called family and make memories with her best friends at the same time. So it was safe to say the next camp couldnât come soon enough for Astrid.

Astrid was now home for the Christmas break, allowing herself close to three weeks before she had to return to Sweden for training ahead of the last leg of the season. Her schedule had been quite hectic since the October international window, long training sessions, four last club games and the final Matildas games in mid november.Â
The best part of the games against Sweden and Thailand, were that the squad were back on home soil and with their families for longer ahead of the Christmas break.
In the match against Sweden at AAMI park in Melbourne, Astrid played a phenomenal game of football for a whole second half, bringing on fresh legs and a certain attitude that comes with playing for your country on home soil. Herself, Caitlin, Mary and Sam had managed to score and provide an easy 4-0 win over the Swedes.Â
Astrid hoped her parents might have been able to make it to the game, but timing just didnât work to get them down to Melbourne. It didnât phase her though, she knew they were cheering from home and the next game against Thailand just so happened to be at her home stadium in the Central Coast.Â
Astrid hadnât been home in what felt like forever and the emotions hit her hard after the Thailand match. When her number appeared on the substitute board to take over for Courtnee, she could hear her family cheering louder than ever from the sideline, trying not to look over at the friends and family box in fear of distracting herself.Â
But that would actually be the thing that egged her on even more. They were already leading 2-0 but that didnât mean they had to stop there. She was far out on the right when the ball fell to her feet, not her usual position when playing for Hammarby but one she found herself falling into more when with the Matildas.Â
She tried dribbling it in towards Sam who was up front but a Thailand defender was not letting up, so the smartest move was to get up near the corner and let the opposition knock it out. And thatâs exactly what happened. Â
The crowd cheered behind her as she walked past Steph who was making her way over to take the corner, giving each other a high five in passing before Astrid made her way to the middle, standing out just further than the group and away from opposing players like they had planned in training.Â
Steph raised her hands when ready, eyeing up who was available in the box to knock it in but the Thailand players were all over the Matildas, ready to deflect. So Steph struck hard, angling the ball slightly farther over, watching it fly towards Astrid who was ready out the back. It had become known that Astrid was able to strike hard and fast from far out, as well as very close to the net. So Astrid caught the ball with her chest, knocking it down to her right boot and taking a wide step with her left.Â
The crowd went silent as they watched in anticipation, the ball flying high over the players heads, slipping past the hands of the goalie and directly into the back of the net. The crowd roared in celebration, Astridâs family jumping up and down from the box as they watched her run directly to Steph and jump onto her.Â
The girls were all screaming as they ran and dogpiled the pair on the pitch, Astrid and Steph still holding tightly onto each other as the pile began to disperse. The game ended 3-0 in the Matildas favour, making sure to consolidate the Thailand players before congratulating their teammates and eventually starting their lap around the pitch.
âWhat a shot kid, you fucking weapon.â Astrid felt a pair of hands jump on her shoulders, turning with a smile to find Samâs face next to her own.Â
âYeah whatever.â Astrid tried to shrug the compliment off, always very humble and quiet about her skills and rejecting any genuine praise.
âIt was incredible and you know it. Go celebrate with your family.â Sam shook her shoulders and pushed her in the direction of her friends and family in the stands. She ran over while clapping to the crowd around her but was more focused on making it to her parents.Â
âMUM! DAD!â Astrid smiled once she spotted the back of their heads, pulling their attention to her and away from their current conversation. She made it to the barrier and began climbing over so she could give them a proper hug.Â
She always felt safe in their arms and it had been so long since the last time that every bit of homesickness she bottled up over the last few months began to come up.Â
âI missed you so much.â Tears pooled in her eyes and Joanna pulled Astridâs face out from her chest, looking slightly up at her due to the height difference.Â
âOh my darling. We missed you too.â She wiped her daughters' tears and smiled at her, Mark standing beside them with a hand on Astridâs shoulder.Â
âThat was a cracking goal my girl.â Mark shook her shoulder as she laughed with him, shaking her head at him.Â
âThanks dad.â She gave him a side hug, Mark giving her a kiss on the head.Â
âClearly working hard over there in Sweden huh?â He commented and she silently nodded, a pang to her heart as she remembered again just how far away she really lived from them.Â
âYeah, guess so.â Astrid let out a small chuckle. Itâs very easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of playing matches and training, that often Astrid forgot she was only 18 and living halfway across the world away from her family. But it was what she wanted and needed to do for her career.Â
âDo you need to head back and get ready to leave with the team?â Her mum broke Astrid out of her thoughts, rubbing her arm gently.Â
âUh yeah.â She looked back at the field and saw them wrapping up their interactions with fans. âAre we still on for lunch tomorrow?â Astrid looked between her parents.Â
âOf course.â Joanna and Mark nodded. âGo on darling, weâll see you later.â Joanna signalled for Astrid to head off, seeing Kyra, Charli and Courtney waiting for her at the tunnel, waving over at her parents.Â
âBye.â She blew them a kiss and jumped back over the barrier, waving to a few fans who were calling out her name, stopping for a minute to take a few photos.Â
âExcuse me?â A young boy called out from the end near the tunnel, Astrid turning her head to find him, walking over and bending down to his height at the barrier.Â
âHi there. Whatâs your name?â She put her hand out for a high five.Â
âLiam.â He smiled and completed the high five.
âNice to meet you Liam, did you enjoy the game?â She asked him, holding on the barrier to talk to him. He nodded eagerly in excitement.Â
âI cheered really loudly when you scored.â He jumped up and down, Astrid laughing softly. âYouâre my favourite.â He smiled largely and Astridâs heart practically melted.Â
âWell thank you Liam.â She placed a hand on her heart. âKyra, did you hear that?â She looked over to the brunette, grinning. âHe said Iâm his favourite.â She raised his eyebrows and Kyra dramatically clutched her heart in pain. Astrid laughed alongside Liam as they watched Charli and Courtney shaking their heads at Kyra in disapproval. âWell Liam, would you like my jersey? Since Iâm your favourite?â His jaw dropped and Astrid started to stand.Â
âYes, please.â He asked while in shock, nodding his head excitingly.Â
âOkay, one sec.â Astrid ran to find a bib, putting it on in place of the jersey and heading back to Liam and his parents who were standing behind him. She was given a sharpie and put her signature under her number before handing it to him.Â
âThank you!â He looked up at her with wide eyes and a smile.
âYouâre more than welcome bud.â She gave him another high five before walking down the tunnel with the girls. âSucked in.â Astrid stuck her tongue out at Kyra confidently but quickly lost it when Kyra began chasing her down the tunnel towards the change rooms.
âYou two are children!â Charli yelled as they ran down the hallway, Astrid looking back to see how closely Kyra was running behind her until she finally caught up, wrapping her arms around Astrid and picking her up and throwing Astrid over her shoulder.Â
âPut me down!â Astrid pounded on Kyraâs back as the older girl just laughed and carried her into the changeroom where the rest of the team were getting unready after the match. âPlease someone help me.â She cried out as Kyra continued to carry her, now spinning around in circles.Â
âWeâve learnt itâs best not to become involved when it comes to you two.â Alanna snickered from the corner, Caitlin and Mackenzie laughing alongside her as the rest of the group silently agreed.Â
âYou all suck!â Astrid continued to hit Kyraâs back but it seemed to be no use. âMini!â Astrid spotted Katrina walking in the room with Harper and reached her hands out to her. âPlease tell your child to let me down.â
âNot my child.â Mini stated but deep down she knew that these younger players were her kids in a way, and she doesnât like when her kids misbehave. âKyra put her down before she throws up all over us.â Mini crossed her hands over her chest and Kyra knew that meant business. So she slowly stopped spinning and gently placed Astrid down.Â
âThank you Mini.â Astrid brushed her hair back down, gave Kyra a death stare and collected her things before walking to the showers without another word.Â
âOoooo silent treatment. In the bad books now Kyra.â Charli commented from the doorway, everyone else laughing at the midfielder standing in the middle of the room looking very lost.Â
Astrid continued to ignore Kyra, not only because she was mad at her but also because it was fun to watch her walk around with puppy eyes and wait for Astrid to talk to her. Even on the bus ride, the younger took a seat next to Steph and Kyra was left to find another one to sulk in and watch Astrid from a distance.Â
The next day after recovery, Astrid had been picked up by her parents and taken to lunch, wanting to catch up with their daughter after so long apart, even though they message and facetime as often as they can with the time differences and Astridâs busy schedule.Â
Meanwhile, Kyra spent those few hours thinking up ways to apologise to Astrid, something she normally wouldn't do after being childish like that. But the fact Astrid had yet to speak to her, she felt really bad and wanted to make it up to her.Â
So when Astrid returned to her hotel room, she was surprised to hear a knock on her door, interrupting her packing process. She didnât know what to expect when opening the door but it certainly wasnât this.
âWhat the fuck Kyra?â Astrid struggled not to laugh at the ridiculous sight she saw in front of her. Kyra was standing there, a pout on her face and a small cake that had Taylor Swiftâs face printed on it in her hands.Â
âIâm sorry for yesterday, I just wanted to have fun and I took it too far. Will you please forgive me?â Kyra finally spoke and Astrid could not believe the words that were coming out of her mouth.
âYouâre actually such an idiot, oh my god.â Astrid finally let out a laugh, in absolute disbelief that this was real. She pulled her phone out from her shorts pocket and took a photo of Kyra in the doorway. âI appreciate it though, thank you.â Kyra seemed to let her breath go after hearing that.Â
âYouâre welcome. Can I come in?â Kyra asked and Astrid opened the door wider, using her hand to gesture back into the room, shutting the door after Kyra made her way in.Â
âWhere did you get this?â Astrid further inspected the cake Kyra had now placed on desk, pulling out two forks from her pocket.Â
âSome cake shop I found online said they did realistic photos on cakes. So I called them up and asked for a Taylor Swift cake.â Kyra spoke casually, watching Astridâs facial expression change with every word.Â
âThat is genuinely the funniest thing Iâve ever heard you say, and youâve said a lot of things.â Astrid bit back her smile. âBut to be honest I was only ignoring you to see how long you could go without begging for my forgiveness. And it's safe to say Iâm impressed.â Kyra smiled at her and handed her a fork.Â
âThank you. I think this is the longest Iâve gone without talking to you ever.â Kyra spoke as she ate a bite of cake. Astrid ate her own piece and thought about it.Â
âI think youâre right.â She nodded before another thought popped into her head. âShould we be eating this?â She paused before her second bite, Kyra shrugging in response as she shovelled more cake into her face.Â
âWho cares? Weâre technically on break and we can call it a cheat day.â Astrid silently agreed with her and ate more cake.Â
They sat in silence as they ate almost half of the cake together before lying back on Astridâs bed and slowly entering food comas.Â
âThat was really good.â Astrid finally spoke and Kyra hummed in agreement. âThank you for doing that Ky, you didnât have to.âAstrid turned her head to look at Kyra beside her.Â
âI had to make it up to you in some way. Thought that was a pretty good way.â Kyra turned her head and smiled at her.Â
âYeah it was.â Astrid spoke then let out a yawn. âI think it's time for a nap.â She rolled onto her side more..Â
âIâll go then.â Kyra began to sit up, Astrid furrowed her brows at the sudden movement.Â
âYou can stay,â The words rushed out very quickly, stopping Kyra in her tracks. âOnly if you like. You donât have to.â Astrid corrected herself, Kyra turning to look down at her.Â
âUh⊠sure.â Kyra nodded and slowly laid back down beside Astrid, turning to face her body inwards and looking at Astrid. âSo you forgive me then?â Kyra wanted confirmation that all was forgiven and no longer in the bad books.Â
âYou know⊠I could never stay mad at you Ky.â Astridâs eyes fluttered shut as she found herself drifting off into sleep. Kyra bit back a smile and slowly closed her own eyes.Â
âOhâŠmyâŠgod.â Charli whispered as she entered her and Astridâs shared room, trying to compose herself as she stumbled upon Astrid and Kyra asleep on the bedâŠcuddling⊠together. Throughout their food coma nap they had subconsciously moved closer and Astrid was now resting upon Kyra, who had laid a hand on her back.Â
âShhhhhh. Donât wake them.â Mini gripped Charliâs arm, the rest of the team trailed behind them, wanting to find out where the pair of young misfits had been hiding for the past two hours and why they were yet to turn up for dinner. Most of them expected the duo to be plotting ways to mess up the other players' lives or arguing with one another over something stupid. But what they were looking at was certain to be at the very bottom of their listâs.Â
âEnough gawking!â Steph had begun quietly pushing everyone back out the door, all sharing the photos with one another for later blackmailing purposes. âLeave them alone.â She reached Charli and Mini who were both trying to hold back their laughter as they urged closer to the bed with their phones, Steph gripping their elbows and escorting out of the room.Â
The door closed and thatâs when they both finally woke up, Astrid opening her eyes to find her arm had ended up draped over Kyraâs waist and her head resting upon her chest. She looked up to meet Kyraâs eyes, both of them very confused as to how they ended up like this, quickly separating from one another.Â
âShit, we almost missed dinner.â Kyra looked at the time on her phone, now seeing multiple messages from Charli, Mini, Courtney and even Steph asking where she was, Astrid receiving the same amount as she reached for hers.
âLetâs go then.â Astrid brushed her hair back down before standing and walking to the door, Kyra following behind.Â
A week later Astrid was back in her childhood bedroom and enjoying time off from her hectic schedule, but finding herself missing the craziness of living and playing abroad with some of her favourite people.Â
So it was decided among the Sweden squad that they would spend the quality time needed with their families before and during Christmas, but meet up together again to celebrate new years with one another and welcome in the new year while holidaying in Fiji. And because they were on their break, things were allowed to get a little crazy. And what happens in Fiji⊠stays in Fiji.

A/N; Hey, sorry this took me so long to update. Had a bit of writers block after the last chapter and I have been so exhausted from work all the time I haven't wanted to write, bit I just smashed this out in like 6 hours so I'm happy with myself. I think I've come out of the slump so updates should come more regularly now (hopefully). But I hope you enjoy. :)

The next two weeks were a bit of a bit of a blur to Astrid. Everything happened so quickly and she wasnât sure she was processing any of it.
The night of the accident she stayed at camp with the girls as she waited for a car to take her home the next morning. She went back into a state of shock after she told the girls, immediately making them concerned with her lack of emotion but unsure of how to help her. The morning she left, an announcement was made on the Matildas socials to let everyone know Astrid was leaving camp early for personal reasons and that was that, she was gone from camp.Â
While she was being driven home her phone was blowing up with messages and comments of concern by friends and fans but she couldnât look at them, deleting her apps all together and turning away from her phone as she watched the sights of Sydney pass by and enter the central coast.Â
4 days later, the Cup of Nations ended with a win to Australia which the girls celebrated but couldnât help feeling like a big part of their team was missing, because it was. The other three counterparts of the Sweden squad were missing their youngest member the most, sending her texts of love and support but nothing had yet to be reciprocated.Â
Astrid spent quite a few weeks back home, staying with her grandparents as she couldnât bear living in her home without them there. The funeral was small but beautiful, close family and friends coming to pay their respects as Astrid stood beside their photos and watched the event pass by. She was breaking down inside everyday, staying frozen on the outside, unable to process what was really going on and shutting herself off from it all. She laid in bed for most of the day, her grandparents bringing her food and checking on her but she didnât seem to move much in the hours they left her alone in between.
Kyra returned to their shared Swedish apartment in time to get back to training after the international window, but what didnât return was the childish nature she always had when Astrid was around, she was almost silent.Â
Of course the club was more than understanding of Astridâs situation, telling her to take her time and return when she was ready, but didnât expect to see her for quite a while. Neither did Kyra.Â
So when Kyra heard the lock jiggle on the front door the night after her first game back, her immediate thought was that someone was trying to break in, jumping off the couch and reaching for something to protect herself with. She stood with a floor lamp in her hands, looking down the hallway as she watched the door swing open. The lamp was placed down as a familiar head of hair was turned down to
Astrid dragged her bags through the door, still unaware that Kyra was standing in the hallway until she closed the door and turned around. Her eyes locked with Kyraâs and she felt a weight lifted off her chest. Silently she dropped her bags and began walking down the hallway, making her way to Kyra and practically jumping onto her with a deep inhale.Â
They held one another tightly, Kyra slightly lifting Astrid off the floor as she tucked her face into her neck, holding on and never wanting to let go. And for the first time since they parted, Astrid let out the tears she had been holding onto back home as she leant into Kyra.Â
âHi.â Astrid let out into Kyraâs neck, taking a sharp inhale, tears running down her face.Â
âHi.â Kyra let out a breath, squeezing her tighter in the hallway. Astrid began to let go, lowering herself down to the ground and pulling away so she could look at Kyra. âWhat are you doing here?â Kyra moved her hands to wipe Astridâs tears.Â
âComing back to reality.â She shook her head, hands moving to Kyraâs waist as they stood in the hallway.Â
âNo one expects you to, star. You can take as much time off as you need-â
âKyra, stop.â Astrid cut her off. âI want to come back here, to training, to regular life.â She sighed. âTo you.â Kyra tries to hide a smile at the last words but fails miserably. âI missed you so much.â
âI missed you. Iâm not me without you.â Kyra speaks and Astrid snorts as she giggles.
âThat was so lame, oh my god.â Astrid leans forward, placing their foreheads together as she lets her chuckle fade out. âI need you to trust that Iâm ready to come back. Because I am.â She closed her eyes and felt Kyra nod underneath her.Â
âI trust you.â Kyra closed her eyes too, sighing deeply before nudging her face closer, bringing her lips to Astrids, a soft and gentle kiss to bring them back together. âLetâs get back to our normal routine then.â Kyra smiled before dragging her to the couch and pulling Astrid up to her chest, staying there for the rest of the night as they fell off to sleep together.Â
The morning after Astrid had returned, the secret couple were walking onto the Hammarby training grounds together, dropping their joined hands when they saw teammates and staff ahead of them.Â
âKeep this between us?â Astrid whispered to Kyra with a smile before they reached the rest of the team in the change rooms.Â
âYeah.â Kyra nodded and whispered back, agreeing to keep whatever was going on between them until they felt ready to announce their business to the world.Â
The first training session back for Astrid was delayed a bit more when the coaching staff called her into the office for a chat. They wanted to check in with her and assure her that there was no need to come back just yet. But Astrid was stern in her decision that she was ready and didnât want to miss any more football, especially with the World Cup only four months away. They were all concerned but couldnât do anything against it, her decision was her decision.Â
Astrid was back training as if she had never stopped, it might have only been two weeks away from training but she hadnât done any form of fitness during her time off and it didnât affect her at all.Â
If anything, she looked stronger on the field. Her drills were perfect, her passes clean and her goals impressive. She was focused on being the best footballer she could be, proving to everyone that despite what has happened, she was still the same player as before.Â
Tony had been notified by the Hammarby staff of Astridâs return to training, which is why she had received a call from him at the end of her first week.Â
âHey G-man.â Astrid answered the phone after seeing Tonyâs contact pop up. She heard Tony laugh through the phone at the greeting, letting out a smile herself.
âHello Astrid, how are you?â Tony asked as she sat down on the couch, bringing her knees up under her.Â
âDoing well, Tony. How are you?â She asked him.
âGood, thank you. I heard of your return to training at Hammarby this week.â Tony sat back in his own chair.Â
âYes, back and better than ever. Felt good to run on the pitch again.â Astrid nodded her head as she spoke.Â
âGood, good.â He paused before he spoke again. âNow, I wanted to speak to you about the national team, and your return with us.â Astrid sat up a bit straighter as he spoke now.Â
âYep.â She responded before waiting for him to continue.Â
âYou know how much of an asset you are to the team, what you bring to the squad both on and off the pitch with your personality and style.â He paused again. âAnd we would love to have you back with us for this next camp like always, but as a coaching staff we are unsure if you are ready to return to national level football just yet.â Her heart stopped as he finished.Â
âOkay.â She took a deep breath in. âWhat can I do to show you that I am ready? If I play this next game on Sunday, will you be able to make a decision then? How can I prove to you I am still the same player I was a month ago?â She stood up off the couch awaiting his response.Â
âAstrid,â He did not expect her to fight this hard for her spot in the squad so soon.Â
âPlease, Tony.â Astrid was ready to beg and plead for the chance to prove herself to him and the other coaches.Â
âOkay, I will be there to watch on Sunday and then I will converse with the other national staff after the game.â Tony would be lying if he said he didnât have a bit of a soft spot for the youngest player of his squad. That is why he folded so easily to her pleading.Â
âThank you, thank you, thank you. I will not let you down Tony.â Astrid could barely contain her excitement but tried, very hard, to remain semi-professional over the phone.Â
âI know you wonât. I'll see you on Sunday Astrid.â Tony smiled to himself before hanging up.Â
As soon as he hung up she did a little happy dance, jumping up and down in a circle, a wide grin on her face, not noticing Kyra walking into Astridâs bedroom after her shower.Â
âWhatâs got you all happy?â Kyra laughed at Astrid as she paused and turned around to her with wide eyes after getting caught.Â
âNothing. None of your business, go away.â Astrid playfully shooed her hand at Kyra who stood in the doorway with her mouth wide open. Astrid flopped back down on her bed, using her elbows to prop her body up.
âExcuse me. You should not talk to your girlfriend like that.â Kyra shook her head and began walking over to Astrid.Â
âWho said I was your girlfriend? I donât actually remember you asking me to be your girlfriendâ Astrid shrugged with a frown, placing a finger on her chin as if she was thinking really hard.Â
âWell, in that caseâŠâ Kyra came and laid down on the bed next to her. âCan I be your girlfriend?â She pouted and fluttered her lashes, her best puppy dog eyes on show.Â
âHmmmm. I donât know, I have to think about that.â Astrid sighed dramatically before Kyra pounced on her, droplets from her wet hair getting splashed onto Astrid as she began to squeal and laugh. âGet off me you pest.âÂ
âSay yes.â Kyra begged as she kept attacking Astrid with her sopping hair.Â
âFine! Yes.â Astrid yelled out and pushed Kyra off her, both now sitting up on the bed. âYou can be my girlfriend.â Astrid barely had anytime to watch Kyraâs reaction because the midfielder was leaning forward and pulling her in by her face and placing a kiss on her lips.Â
âGood, thatâs all I wanted.â Kyra smiled and Astrid rolled her eyes as Kyra got up. âNow go shower, you stink of training.â She waved her hand in front of her nose and walked out the door.Â
âI hate you!â Astrid yelled as Kyra walked down the hall, smiling to herself before flopping back down on her bed.Â
After another long week of training harder than ever, Astrid found herself named in the match day squad, not back in the starting line up with Kyra just yet but promised to come on later in the second half of this semi final.Â
After the first goal within 15 minutes, Hammarby struggled to find another. The coaching staff were putting off bringing Astrid in and not risking her playing too long too early in her return, but when everyone elseâs shots kept falling short, they knew it was her time to shine.
She got subbed on at 65 minutes, moving into the number 9 role in prime position to take plenty of shots on goal. And that she did. Along with 3 other players, she helped advance Hammarby into the finals of the Svenska Cupen Damer, adding two more goals to her tally and impressing a certain coach in the stands.Â
After the match Astrid had made her way to where Tony was waiting in the stands, waving him down with a bright smile.
âGood to see you Astrid.â He brought her into a hug over the barrier.Â
âSame to you Tony. Did you enjoy the game?â Astrid asked with a smile that he reciprocated.Â
âI did. Very impressive. Congratulations on making the final.â Tony was speaking and all Astrid could do was hope that he was impressed and helped him make his decision on her place in the next camp.Â
âThank you. Iâm very happy with the result and my own performance.â Astrid beamed with happiness and knew that this was where she was meant to be right now, on the pitch doing what she loves for who she loves.Â
âYes, your play was very good, youâve been working hard I can see. I know what youâre waiting for me to say but I have to converse with the other staff first, and then I will call you.â He placed a hand on her shoulder and she nodded in response. âGood game.âÂ
âThanks G-man.â She called out to him as he walked off and he only shook his head in response, waving a hand up in the air as he kept going.Â
She didnât know when to expect a call from him, thinking he would take a couple of days to converse but it was only two days later when his contact popped up once again, stopping the movie she and Kyra were watching to answer.Â
âHello?â Astrid answered professionally this time. Kyra looked over at her in confusion, unsure of who she was talking to.Â
âHello Astrid. How are you?â Tony was trying to speak blandly toÂ
âGood, Tony. How are you?â Astrid asked, Kyraâs eyes widened as she realised who it was and what this conversation probably was about. Astrid had been acting odd since the game but not explaining to Kyra why, even though the midfielder had assumed it was in regards to the upcoming Matildas camps.
âVery good.â Tony paused before speaking again. Astridâs heart was pounding and she began biting her nails, Kyra stopping her by taking a hold of her hand. âI have some news for you. I have talked with the rest of the coaching staff and come to a decision.â
She was too nervous to respond, squeezing her hand in Kyraâs as she waited for him to speak again.Â
âWe would like to see you with us in London next week for the games against Scotland and England.â Astrid practically fell apart with relief as he said those words. âYour game on Sunday was impressive and what we need going into this camp. We value your skills and determination and look forward to seeing you back with the team.âÂ
Tony spoke with a large grin that Astrid could feel through the phone.Â
âThank you Tony. That means a lot. And Iâll see you next week.â Astrid finally spoke, a deep breath let out and a very thankful goodbye before she hung up. Astrid turned to Kyra on the couch with a wide grin. âLooks like weâre both headed to London next week.âÂ

Once the team had figured out who the unsub was, they split up between his home and work addresses, racing against the clock towards each. Morgan, Spencer and yourself were currently heading to his house with Garcia on the phone still spitting out random facts about him.
The SUV pulled up outside the small house, the three of you jumping out straight away.Â
âReid, you take the back entrance.â Morgan instructed, Spencer running around the side of the house instantly. âYou take the kitchen entrance and Iâll take the front.â You nodded at him, giving him a fist bump before taking off, it was your way of saying âbe safeâ without words.Â
You stayed quiet and low as you travelled around the west side, looking through the windows for any sign of the unsub.Â
âI got him. Heâs in the living room with Carrie.â You whispered into your radio, spotting him and the missing girl through the side window. You continue until you get to the door. Derekâs loud voice can be heard throughout the whole house.Â
âSamuel Rogers! Drop the weapon and let Carrie go!âÂ
You twist the handle of the door slowly, attempting not to make any noise as you open it easily, stepping inside the house quietly. You had your gun raised, checking each corner before you found yourself at the edge of the kitchen and the living room. Derek was directly in front of the unsub, gun trained at him as best as he could with the unsub moving back and forth, arms tight around Carrieâs neck. Spencer was only 2 feet away from you, standing between the dining and living room, doing the same as you, standing silently behind them in case things went south.Â
Derek was talking to him, trying to calm him down and encouraging him to let her go but he wasn't budging. âGive it up man, let her go. Your plan didnât work.â Morgan kept saying to him. Your gun was pointed directly at him from behind, Samuel being unaware of the two agents currently behind him.Â
âSHUT UP!â Samuel yelled, squeezing Carrie tighter in his arms, pointing his gun directly at Derekâs chest.Â
Adrenaline was pumping through your veins, heartbeat pounding in your ears as you stood closer to an unsub than you ever have before. Your finger was pressing on the trigger and within seconds a shot was fired, your arm jolting back as your own gun fired. Your eyes were squinted shut, not seeing directly where it was fired.Â
You opened your eyes seconds later, spotting Spencer moving closer to Samuelâs body checking for a pulse, Derek reaching forward to move Carrie out of the way. Your eyes then travelled to the lifeless body on the ground, spotting the bloody hole in his forehead. Your breath left your chest, arms still raised with your gun in your hands.
This isnât the first time youâve shot someone while being in the FBI, normally opting for the shoulder or the thigh, pretty much just knocking them down. But this was your first kill. The first time your shot has killed someone else. You were frozen in your spot, watching the scene unfold before you as the rest of your team showed up, moving Carrie out to an ambulance and covering Samuelâs body with a white sheet.
A soft hand on your shoulder finally broke you from your trance, you blinked and the air finally returned to your lungs.Â
âY/N.â Derek called out softly from beside your ear. He reached out and placed his hand on your extended arms, lowering them and removing your gun from shaking hands. âItâs okay.â He whispered and your head dropped, playing back the same moment over and over again. He wrapped his arm around your shoulders and walked you out of your head, guiding you to stand next to one of the SUVâs.Â
You were in a state of shock, staring down at the pavement while people walked past you, sirens rang and lights flashed in the street, neighbours coming out of their houses to look at the spectacle happening in their street.Â
âHey.â Derek appeared in front of you again. âYou okay?â His voice was soft and calming. You kept your head down.Â
âI- Iâve never killed anyone before. I didnât want it to end like that.â You shook your head, eventually meeting his soft eyes with your sad ones.Â
âI know. I know, kid.â He consoled you. âI also know that you saved my life.â He held your shoulder again, pulling you closer to him.Â
âWell yeah but-â You looked down again, sighing deeply.Â
âNo buts. Look at me.â He instructed but you didnât. He used his hand to grab your cheek softly, pulling you up to meet his eyes again. âYou did what you had to. Okay?â He was telling the truth but there was part of you that knew it couldâve ended differently and he sensed this. âOkay?â He asked again.Â
âOkay.â You sighed, nodding your head.Â
âCome here.â He pulled you into a soft hug, holding your head against his chest as you wrapped your arms up under his shoulders. You didnât care if people or your team saw you hugging in the field, they knew how close you guys were. He was like your big brother and your best friend rolled into one. He was close to Spencer in a similar way, everyone including yourself knew that. But he was the first to take you under his wing when you joined the team not that long ago, finding comfort in you and your presence; you felt the exact same.Â
âThank you Morgan.â You pulled back from the hug, smiling softly up at him.Â
âAnytime Y/L/N.â He ruffled your hair like he always did. âLetâs go get a drink.â He laughed slightly, brightening the mood. You nodded, never passing up the chance to hang out with your team in a fun setting.Â
You had all made your way back to the hotel you were staying at, taking some time to get yourselves ready before heading down to the hotel bar. You were the last to arrive, taking a little extra time in the shower to wash the day off. As you walked down the stairs into the bar, the whole team turned to look at you, cheering lightly as they said hello. Your face changed quickly from happy to confused. You walked closer to them, standing next to Derek.Â
âWhatâs going on?â You looked at him, whispering through a smile. His own smile grew larger as he handed you your favourite drink.Â
âTo Y/N,â Everyone raised their glasses. âFor saving my life today.â He continued and wrapped his empty arm around your shoulder. Everyone clinked their glasses together, making sure to smile and make eye contact with you. âThank you, Iâm proud of you.â Derek whispered in your ear, placing a kiss on your temple as the rest of your team talked amongst themselves again.Â
The rest of the night was spent talking, laughing and drinking with your newfound family. It was a tough case, especially for you and tonight was exactly what you needed. Â
Summary;Â The story of how you and Jessie were brought together one fateful night in college and didn't leave each others side ever again.
Words; 2050
Pairing; Jessie Fleming x UCLA reader
A/N; Mother Taylor has inspired me and a tiktok that paired a footballer with an academic girl and I had thoughts. Then I was wondering who to do it with and THEN⊠UCLA J FLEM. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do because Iâm in a Jessie mood rn. Btw this has been sitting in my drafts for literally like 2 months and I haven't had the inspiration to finish it until today. Enjoy loves xx
Jessie was more than kind of uncomfortable right now. She was tired after a full day of classes and an early morning training session, wanting to flop into bed after her long day and sleep away most of the weekend. But here she was, nursing a cup of coke in the corner of a frat house and wishing she had declined the invitation to come out with half of the soccer team.Â
âYou good?â Teagan had made her way over, leaning against the wall and looking down at the midfielder who was seemingly lost in thought.
âYeah, fine.â Jessie nodded her head, hiding the fact she desperately didnât wanna be here anymore.Â
âWhy donât you try and go talk to someone? Iâm sure there are plenty of pretty girls catching your eye right now.â Teagan nudged her shoulder with a smirk, downing her drink before walking away again. Jessie sighed before taking another sip of her coke and walking to another section of the house where more people congregated.Â
Her eyes filtered through the room, trying to take the goalkeeper's advice but giving up after noticing every pretty girl making their way over to someone else. Eventually her feet mindlessly walked her over to the back door, the glow of the pool under the moonlight catching her eye first before she spotted you.Â
Your friends had practically dragged you from your dorm, insisting you had to come and party with them, but where were they? Probably inside making out with frat guys and forgetting you actually came with them. Thatâs how you had found yourself sitting on a deck chair outside, avoiding the loud music and heavily intoxicated 20 year olds celebrating the start of their senior year, after your friends ditched you early on.
It didnât bother you, them leaving you alone that is. And you could have gone home but you wanted to stay and make sure your friends made it home safely.Â
Jessie only saw the side of your face from how you were positioned on the chair but immediately found herself drawn to you. People may have called her crazy for falling with just one look, but when you know, you know.Â
You didnât hear the sliding door open, too busy looking up at the moon and wondering what else you could be doing right now if you stayed in bed. It wasnât until you heard the chair beside you creek that you finally noticed her, snapping your head at the noise and becoming encapsulated by her big brown eyes and freckles immediately.Â
âSorry, I didn't mean to scare you.â She apologised, her eyes somehow getting bigger and more beautiful.Â
âI-itâs okay.â You let out a breath. âJust wasnât expecting anyone else to be out here.â You shared a soft giggle and she finally smiled.Â
âYeah, not really my scene.â Jessie shrugged and began sitting back in the chair, copying her movements and turning your head to face her.
âMe either.â You smiled before reaching out a hand to her. âY/N.â
âJessie.â She connected your hands, ignoring the tingling she felt in her fingers while you pushed down the butterflies fluttering around your stomach.Â
You two spent the rest of the night talking before she offered to walk you back to your dorm, after finding out your friends had already left with guys and you were left alone. Well, not so alone now.Â
The next few weeks would find you and Jessie with each other as much as possible, save for your individual classes, and you were happier than ever. You werenât dating, no but it began to feel like it, especially when you ran down the bleachers after she won her next match, Jessie catching you as you jumped into her arms with pride.Â
After almost two months since meeting you finally had your first kiss. It wasnât super romantic but exactly how you would have wanted it to go. You and Jessie were hanging out in her dorm, you studying for an upcoming exam and her pretending to catch up on classwork but really spent the whole time staring at you.Â
âJessie.â You were focused on the millions of highlighted poems and texts that sounded you on the floor but could feel her eyes burning in the back of your head. âI can feel you staring.â
âWhat?â Jessie acted dumb, biting her lip to hold back a smile as she watched you turn your head, raising an eyebrow.
âYou know that if you donât get this work done youâre not playing this weekend. And I already cleared my schedule to watch you soooo.â You sat up fully, leaning back on your arms to look up at her on her bed.
âCan we not just take a small break? Weâve been at this for hours!â She whined, tilting her head at you, a fake pout accompanied by some puppy dogs eyes.Â
âItâs literally been 45 minutes.â You deadpanned as you got up and jumped up to sit next to her.Â
â45 minutes too long.â She huffed and you stifled a laugh as you looked at her.Â
âWhat would you rather us do then?â You asked while shaking your head at her, letting out that laugh but stopping when her silence was noted. You looked up to find her staring, no, gazing into your eyes, a look on her face she had many times but this was the first time you noted it. She looked lovestruck.Â
Your mouth opened to speak again but you were cut off when she was suddenly moving forward, one hand reaching up to hold your cheek and the other moving down to hold your waist. Before you could process anything, her lips were on yours and it was as if you had been transported into another world.
After that kiss your relationship didnât seem to change that much, still spending almost all of your time together, though this time spending it a little closer and with a lot more kissing. Something about your relationship felt so young and naive, like you were back in high school making out at parties and never spending more than a couple hours apart from one another.Â
You now went to all her training sessions, sitting in the bleachers finishing homework while she prepared for their next match. Jessie loved you just being there but was getting a little annoyed that you werenât fully paying attention as she ran rings around her teammates in an effort to impress you. She knew the perfect way to get your nose out of your books.Â
âHEY BABE!â Jessie shouted up to you across the pitch. The sheer volume and urgency of her voice caught your attention instantly, looking up to find her waving her arm comically in your direction.Â
âWhat?â You laughed alongside her teammates who were standing on the pitch waiting for something to happen.Â
âWATCH THIS!â She yelled again before running back to her starting position, eyeing up the cones and dummies she meticulously laid out and the ball that laid in wait for her. You bit back a smile at her excited nature, waiting for her to begin whatever trick she was about to show off.Â
She began dribbling the ball skillfully through the first few cones that were placed closely together. Yourself and her remaining teammates watched her feet intensely, quite impressed with how precisely she was keeping the ball in and under her feet. She made it through her round of cones and looked up towards you in the stands, making sure you were in fact watching her and whether or not you were impressed. But what she failed to notice was how close she had positioned the steel dummies that were part of her second skill test.Â
Everyone saw it happen before she did, running straight into the dummy, too distracted by you to realise she was running into it. You heard the ding from halfway up the bleachers and within seconds you were racing down to her on the pitch, trying to keep your laughter at bay so you could seriously check on her.Â
âJessie, are you okay?â You knelt down to where Jessie was now sitting up, legs splayed across the grass and a hand to her temple, soothing where she hit her head.Â
âDonât laugh. I was just trying to impress you.â Jessie finally spoke, avoiding your eyes and producing a pout, meanwhile her freckled cheeks were getting redder than they already were.Â
âOh baby I know. It was very impressive till⊠you know.â You directed her eyes back to you with a soft smile, biting your lip again to hold back your laugh.Â
That night Jessie continued to pout, even when you were giving her all your attention, laying between your legs as you held an ice pack to her temple and babying her all night long even though you didnât put the dummy there, she did.Â
After graduation you moved with Jessie to England for her contract with Chelsea, you managed to land a position at the University of London, teaching in the English department, a great start to your life together in a new country. Â
Jessie proposed to you in January of 2022 after three and a half years of dating, keeping it private and personal by dropping down on one knee as you were getting into bed one cold night.Â
Clad in flannelette pyjamas and fluffy socks, just having got out of the shower, you walked back into the bedroom expecting Jessie to be curled up in bed and waiting for you. But as you turned the corner she was bent down on one knee and holding a ring in her shaking hands. Jessie had prepared a whole speech about how much she loves you and wants to spend the rest of her life with you but in true Jessie fashion she got nervous and the only words that came out were. âMarry me? Please?âÂ
You both took the next year to plan the wedding for Spring 2023 before the world cup, wanting to make sure you knew what you wanted and to enjoy being engaged before being married.Â
The big day finally arrived and you hadnât seen Jessie in more than 24 hours, both of your bridesmaid groups separating you from one another for practically the first time in almost 5 years.Â
It was a beautiful ceremony filled with all for your close family and friends to celebrate your love and unite your families. You cried, Jessie cried, everyone cried. The reception though was one massive party. Everyone danced, everyone drank and most of all you got to have fun with your wife like you did back in college.Â
At the end of the night, after the party ended and everyone went home, you and Jessie were sipping champagne on your hotel room floor, giggling with one another in the silent room while wearing matching pyjamas.Â
âI love you.â Jessie said as she stared, no gazed, in your direction. âYouâre so pretty, will you marry me?â Her words were slightly slurred as her tipsy frame swayed back and forth every so slightly.Â
âToo late, already did.â You laughed as you brought your left hand up to her face, showing off both of your shining rings. âLook.â You brought her hand up too, showing her own ring clad fingers to her, shock adorning her freckled face.Â
âWeâre married already?!â Jessie shrieked and you knew it was time for bed.Â
âYes, now come on. Time for bed my love.â You placed a kiss on her lips before putting your flutes down and pulling Jessie up with you from the floor. You dragged her over to the large bed, crawling alongside each other to then assume your regular positioning. Jessie waited for you to get comfortable against the pillows before laying herself across your chest, her pillow.Â
âBaby?â Jessie spoke after a few minutes, tilting her head to look up at you.Â
âHmmm?â You respond as you begin to stroke her hair gently.Â
âTell me about the first time you saw me.â Jessie asked before setting back down against your chest. You let out a small breath, a smile donning your face as she asked you.Â
âWell, I was sitting at a party next to the poolâŠâÂ

âCourtney come on, just tell us please?â Astrid whined as she sat on the edge of her couch with Kyra, Courtney pacing in front of them.Â
âOkay fine.â Courtney sat down in the arm chair across from the couch. âIâm going on loan.â She mumbled but the other girls caught on.Â
âLoan?â Kyra questioned, letting the information process in her mind as she looked at Courtney.Â
âWhere? Who?â Astrid asked with furrowed brows.Â
âLeicester City put in an offer before the break, they told me this morning and I accepted.â Courtney looked down at her hands as she waited for further reactions.Â
âHow long?â Kyra asked after a minute of silence.Â
âTill the end of the WSL season.â Courtney slowly lifted her head. âAnd then they have the option to buy after that.â She looked between her two friends who were processing the news, both silent.Â
âThatâs amazing Nevvy, Iâm so happy for you.â Astrid stood up and opened her arms, waiting for Courtney to join her. Courtney stood up with a smile, accepting the hug and holding onto Astrid.Â
âThank you.â Courtney spoke into Astridâs shoulder where she placed her head, the younger girl running her hand up and down her back. The two girls almost jumped when another pair of arms wrapped around them and a small laugh came from Kyra as she joined the hug.
âWhen do you go?â Kyra asked softly as they pulled apart but still stood closely.Â
âWell Iâm still training here for the next week and a half and then Iâll leave to sign there on the 25th.â Courtney relayed what she was told this morning.Â
âShit. Thatâs soon.â Astridâs smile faltered as she realised how little time they had together in Sweden.
âI know. But weâll see each other at camp like every month.â Courtney pulled Astrid into her side.Â
âEnough with the sadness.â Kyra spoke sternly while putting her finger straight up in the air, scaring Courtney and Astrid. âJust means we have to do everything together for the next week and a half until Nev leaves us to our own devices.â Kyra directed her last words to Astrid who laughed in return.Â
âOh no I didnât think of that bit.â Courtney sighed and placed a hand on her forehead in distress, genuinely concerned with how they might actually survive without her as a middle man.Â
Contrary to Cortneeâs advice from over a week ago, Astrid and Kyra had yet to speak about New Yearâs, or anything that happened that night, but easily returned to their usual selves and like nothing had happened.Â
Astrid was still thinking about it at least once a day, questioning whether it was something or not, whether Kyra actually remembered the kiss, and what could this mean for them? The right thing to do to resolve her constant thoughts would be to just talk to Kyra about it, or at least tell someone else. But with the return to football and the World Cup looming above them, she was choosing to ignore the reality of it and keep it hidden deep down.Â
After spending as much time with Courtney before she left and eventually helping her move out, it was time for the first game back. Kyra and Astrid had both been selected for the starting 11, ready to make an impact early on in the game. Itâs safe to say they did.Â
During the first half the pair had linked up on the left side two times, securing two assists for Kyra and a brace for Astrid, which helped the team eventually to their 6-1 win over AIK and a terrific start to the new year.Â
After Courtney had left, Kyra had the thought that maybe Astrid should move in and fill the space and so that neither of them were lonely outside of training. Astrid agreed and they began the process of moving her in and getting out of her old place.Â
Even now with their closer quarters, neither had yet to mention new years eve or the Fiji trip at all, pushing those few days to the back of their minds and ignoring whatever it was that happened between them. Their relationship stayed as close to what it was before the kiss, but there seemed to be a few moments of distance between them at certain times. For the most part though, the pair had acted as they always did and caused mischief to their club teammates during training sessions and weekly team bonding activities.Â
After another 4 matches with Hammarby and another 5 goals added to Astridâs list, it was time for Astrid and Kyra to jet off home and join the Matildaâs for the first camp of the year. It felt weird going off to camp without Courtney this time, Charli also taking her own flight with Mini and Harper, leaving Kyra and Astrid on the long journey alone. And without anyone else to pester or intervene, they were getting at each other's throat every five seconds, resulting in them rocking up to camp exhausted and annoyed with one another.Â
Astrid was always very happy to be back on home soil, especially when they got to play in her hometown and in front of her friends and family, it was always a special time.Â
The car pulled up to the hotel and Astrid and Kyra jumped out, their social media team standing outside ready to catch them, forcing smiles onto both of their faces as if they werenât just arguing five minutes ago about something stupid.Â
They were met with the rest of the girls who had arrived from overseas standing in the lobby, all turning around as they heard Kyra and Astrid walking in the front doors.Â
âCha Cha!â Astrid dropped her baggage immediately, yelling as she ran directly towards the blonde defender, a look of fear in her eyes as she spotted the young forward racing towards her.Â
âOh no.â She whispered to herself, preparing for the impact she knew was coming. Astrid all but leaped into Charliâs arms, the girl grunting as she caught Astrid and tried to stabilise herself, stopping them from falling to the ground.Â
âOh thank god.â Astrid shook her head as she jumped down from Charli, gripping onto her shoulders with wide eyes. âIt is so good to see you, I have been stuck alone with her for 2 months now!â The her she was referring to stood behind them with a dropped jaw.Â
âAnd I have been stuck with her, itâs torture.â Kyra dramatically sighed as she moved closer to the group of girls. Astrid turned around slowly, meeting eyes with Kyra who had her arms crossed over her chest.Â
âI thought you chose to move in with Kyra.â Steph spoke up, pointing her attention to Astrid.Â
âWell it's cheaper and safer than living alone.â Astrid shrugged her shoulders, a smirk growing on her face as she awaited Kyraâs reaction.Â
âTake that back, you love me.â Kyra ran forward, bringing her hands up to pinch Astrids cheeks causing the younger girl to swat her arms away.Â
âLeave me alone!â Astrid squealed as they began fighting, laughs echoing through the lobby as the other girls watched on in confusion, no one ever understood their relationship.Â
âAlright, enough you two. The rooms are ready.â Steph was the one who separated them with the help of Charli who pushed them both towards their bags and handed them their individual room keys. âEveryone has their own room this time.â Steph announced to the group who all seemed happy with that, enjoying having the space to themselves.Â
After a night of rest and a fuelling breakfast where they took the time to catch up, the team were headed to the stadium for their first day of training with only 3 days until their match against Czechia.Â
Training went smoothly like always, the team jumping back into their rhythm instantly and enjoying back together in the Australian sun. Kyra and Astrid paired up for drills, a disaster waiting to happen, and it clearly didnât take long for chaos to ensue. Though they enjoy one another's company, they also have a way of getting under each other's skin quite quickly. So it wasnât a surprise when the session was stopped because Kyra and Astrid were now on the ground practically wrestling after getting caught up in each other's feet and falling over.Â
A few of the older, more responsible girls ran over and began separating them, putting them with different partners and on other sides of the pitch, in hopes of creating a more peaceful, quiet session. But they still managed to find themselves communicating, loudly, across the pitch whilst they were training and still disturbing everyone.Â
âOi, you two!â Samâs voice caught the attention of the pair who sneakily made their way back to one another and were whispering at the back of the group before Sam spotted them. Their heads snapped up at their captain and immediately stopped the chatter, their quiet laughs drifting off. Everyone else watched with smirks as Sam began to scold them. âStop being 5 years olds otherwise youâre not playing on Thursday.â Her threat made them both visibly swallow and start to inch further and further away from each other, avoiding eye contact to avoid laughter.
The 3 days of training had ensured the team could once again come back together like no time had passed and look like they played together each day. They had their meeting that morning, where they would have a final talk about strategies and finally reveal the starting line up, Astrid sitting up the back with her other three counterparts half listening to Tony. That was until something finally caught her attention.
âAs our 10 weâre going to have Astrid,â Tony smiled when he saw the young girl's head lift up, jaw dropping slightly in surprise. âYou are our central attack to help Sam as the 9.â Tony concluded and Astrid nodded, shock turning into a smile on her face. Her teammates were giving her head claps and shoulder shakes while she stared at the screen, her heart beaming at the fact she would be starting a game in her home town with all her friends and family there.Â
During their pitch warm up, Kyra had pointed out Astridâs family that were sitting by one of the corners, both girls giving them a wave when they passed during drills. Astrid couldnât have felt better than she did right now. And unlike the last time she was set to start, there wasnât an ounce of anxiety as redid her hair, tied her boots right to left and finally put on her jersey.Â
Astrid was last in the line behind Charli and Kyra, as per the 31 painted under her last name, pushing out any nerves by talking with her mascot beside her. âWhat position do you play?â Astrid asked the girl beside her.Â
âForward, like you!â The girl pointed up and Astrid's eyes widened as she watched the girl realise who she was, getting even more excited to be standing next to Astrid.Â
âWell that means youâre part of the cool kids club then.â Astrid smiled and put out her spare hand for a high five, the girl jumping up and to hit before jumping up and down in excitement. âUnlike Kyra and Charli.â Astrid bent down to whisper but kept it loud enough for the girls to hear her.Â
âHey!â They both exclaimed but they were cut off as the line started moving and the team began their walk out, Astrid and her mascot still giggling together.Â
There was so much pride behind Astrid as she walked out on that pitch, seeing the almost full stands of Matildas supporters ready to watch what would be a very intense game.Â
During the first half there were so many missed chances from both teams, right from that first touch. Just too high, too far over, a really good block. It seemed nothing was going to happen for either in the first half.
Time was almost up, 3 minutes left on the clock and Astrid was nowhere near giving up on this half. The ball had fallen to Charli who dribbled through the opposition before shooting it off to Kyra in the midfield. Kyra quickly became surrounded and needed to pass it off before she lost it. She found a gap and slipped to a more central position, eying off forwards to pass it too. Courtnee and Hayley were too far back and crowded to slip it in, Sam and Astrid being the only two with a chance of getting it in. Both strikers had their eye on the ball as Kyra kicked it into the air, ready for it no matter who it decided to fall to. It looked as if it was about to fall to Sam who was ready to head it in, so the defenders and goalie headed in her direction.Â
But with a slight change of the breeze and an extra step from Kyra, the ball landed to Astrid at her chest, quickly rolling the ball down to her feet. Her proximity to the next assisted greatly as she used her right foot to tap the ball forward, slipping past the hands of LukĂĄĆĄovĂĄ and bouncing in the back of the net.Â
The crowd roared in her ears as Astrid found herself running along the edge of the pitch past the crowd, proudly taking a hold of her shirt, tapping her badge as she ran. The girls had begun to chase after Astrid who had just given them a leg up in the last 2 minutes of the game. She eventually stopped and turned around to find 9 other girls about to land on her and give her more head pats than she could have imagined.Â
She was beaming as they finally returned to their positions to resume play, all still with adrenaline pumping and a final fight at the end of the half. And before she knew it, Cortnee was running towards the goal, defenders trying to catch up to her before Cortnee slid the ball towards Astrid so quickly that once again Astrid was shooting the ball into the back of the net.Â
A brace within the last 3 minutes of the first half, who would have thought. To celebrate this time though Astrid ran to the corner where her family were sitting, blowing a kiss up to her parents at the edge, almost buckling forward as a whole heap of bodies piled up on her back. The girls were screaming in her ear, most prominently Kyra who was the first person on her back to no surprise, Astrid dropping her off with a bright smile before both Kyra and Charli wrap their arms around the young scorer.Â
30 seconds into resuming play the ref called time and the Matildas were leaving the pitch 2-nil up and hungry for more. After time for a breath and a plan revision, the girls were back on the field, an immediate change was made with Aivi to Clare Hunt, marking her Matildas debut.Â
Hayley was the one who kept the fire alive early in this half, also scoring herself a brace within the first 10 minutes, giving the crowd what they came to see. Astrid, Cortnee and Katrina played 25 minutes of this half before being subbed off for fresh legs, all happy with the impact they had made to the game.Â
The game ended with 6-0 in favour of the Matildas after 2 more goals from Sam and Polks, the girls very happy with their result in front of the home crowd. After their rounds to the fans, saying hello to friends and family, and their group pitch huddle, it was time for the girls to head back to the hotel for a night of rest ahead of their prep for Spain in 3 days.Â

The time had finally come and the 'Sweden Squad', as they started calling themselves, were headed to the airport, flying off to Spain together for the next Matildas camp.
"Can this girl hurry up please? The flight is going to leave without her." Charli looked between the bathrooms and the gate where the line of people was getting shorter. The three older girls heard loud footsteps running towards them and saw Astrid running with a bag falling off her shoulder.
"I'M HERE. I'm here!" Astrid panted as she reached the girls. Charli simply shook her head and began walking towards the line, Kyra laughing as she handed her boarding pass to her. Courtney patted Astrid on the back as they walked together.
On the flight Courtney and Kyra sat next to each other, Charli and Astrid sitting behind them, enjoying their time together as it had been awhile. Although they were in the same country, being at two clubs hours away from each other proved difficult to organise hang outs. That's why they loved national camp so much, spending days together and playing together rather than apart. They also loved being able to see all their other teammates, Astrid excited to see Cortnee again since moving away, missing her constant presence in her life.
The flight landed and they made their way through the Spanish airport, finding the car that was waiting for them outside to take them to the team hotel. Normally the team would hang out together once they were all there but these guys were some of the last to arrive and because it was so late they went straight to bed.
Astrid was rooming with Mackenzie this time, having to be quiet as she moved about getting ready for bed because she was already asleep. As soon as her head hit the pillow she was dead asleep, exhausted from her day of travel and their match the day before.
The next morning Macca's alarm went off and startled Astrid awake, grateful she had set one because she forgot.
"Oh shit, when'd you get here?" Mackenzie was startled when she saw Astrid in her bed.
"Last night." Astrid yawned while sitting up. "Tried not to disturb ya, you looked quite peaceful." She rubbed her eyes before looking at the other girl.
"Thanks. Um breakfast is in like 30 minutes by the way, I wanted as much sleep as I could." She mumbled while getting out of her bed.
"Cool." Astrid sent her a thumbs up. She got up and began to rummage through her bag for her training clothes while Mackenzie was in the bathroom, sitting back on her bed, scrolling through her phone while she waited.
"All yours." Mackenzie opened the bathroom door and Astrid nodded. She got changed, pulled her hair back into a low bun and began her skincare routine. If there was one this Astrid was going to do, it was her skincare. It may be a long process but it worked and her skin looked great so it was worth it.
"Okay, let's go." Astrid announced as she left the bathroom, throwing her pyjamas onto her suitcase.
"About time, the hell were you doing in there." Mackenzie looked at Astrid while putting her shoes on and grabbing the rest of her training gear, Astrid did the same.
"This isn't all natural, it takes time to be this beautiful." Astrid held a hand under her chin and smiled, the other girl just scoffed and pushed her towards the door.
The team ate breakfast together, catching up after a few months apart. A lot of the senior players were on a break, missing normal starters like Sam, Caitlin, Steph, Hayley, Alanna and Mary. And Ellie missing with her ACL injury from a few weeks ago, it was a very different looking team. But this also meant a chance for younger players to come in and experience camp for the first time, and giving opportunity to those with little playing time.
Training was full on, especially with the game being tomorrow and a lot of the players just joining yesterday or the day before. Normally there's a few days before the game to train together but with club seasons in full swing they didn't have that opportunity. So they had to take what they could get.
After a good warm up and stretch they moved into mini matches against one another. This was the time for Astrid to show the coaches how hard she had been working at her new club.
She had been put in the left forward position, her favourite one, and her side was doing so well. She was battling Charli, the defender trying to steal the ball back off her but Astrid had fast feet and a hunger to sink as many goals as she could.
She paused with the ball under her, Charli mirrored her, waiting for her next move. She faked a left, Charli moving that way and Astrid scooted around her on the right, running small strides with the ball. She shot it behind her to Kyra, Astrid running closer to the box as Kyra shot the ball to Astrid and although was about to be swarmed she knew the striker could get past them. The ball landed on her feet, and she stared at the bottom right corner of the goal, Teagan in goal watching her.
Astrid lifted her right leg, striking the ball hard, Teagan jumped to her left ready to block it, but Astrid had twisted her body, angling it to the left instead, Teagan groaning as Astrid and her team shouted in achievement. Astrid shot a fist in the air, turning to go hug Kyra, those in her team around her patting her on the back. The coaches watched on the sides, looking at each other before nodding in admiration at the young players' improvement since last camp.
Astrid's team had won the mini match 2-1, Cortnee equalised with the other team but Mini scored them a goal from distance and brought them ahead.
The day ended after recovery, dinner and an early night before the game tomorrow, all players wanting a decent night's rest before their tough opponent.
Everyone was in focus mode the next morning at breakfast, still having their normal chats but the energy was different to non match days. Astrid had a good feeling about her own skills for this game but was still unsure how it would pan out altogether. The bus ride was quiet as always, everyone playing their own pre match music and mentally preparing for the game ahead.
They arrived at the stadium and got off the bus, heading directly for the change rooms. Astrid spotted her jersey, 'Taylor' above her number. Although her official number was 31, she had begun donning the number 3 during matches and she felt good with it. They did a warm up on the pitch, getting a feel for the grass and noted the mass of Spanish fans in the stands. It intimidated Astrid for sure, having never played an away game for the Matildas before, but she did spot some green and gold scarves and shirts filtered through the crowd.
Astrid's pre-match ritual didn't consist of much but she always re-did her hair, tied her boots, the right foot first, and put her jersey on last, making sure to smooth it out before moving into the pre-match huddle.
"First of all, deep breath. Shoulders out, chest up." Tony began, looking around at the team. "We're ready for this, alright? Send some message about what you're about and what this team is about, and it starts there. 'Cause if you add up all the individual actions, as a team, we will perform well." Everyone nodded at his words. "You got this, let's go." Everyone clapped and cheered, bringing the energy for the match.
The starting line up stayed back in the room as the subs walked out, Astrid making sure to give Charli and Cortnee a big hug as she left them in the line, wishing them good luck. Astrid wasn't a part of the starting line up just yet but Tony wanted her to come on for at most 30 minutes towards the end of the game.
The first half was tough for the Australian side, many good shots at goal but couldn't seem to get it in. Their defence was strong though and Tegan was blocking shots strongly, denying the Spanish right up until that 43rd minute where BonmatĂ managed to shoot one in. Going into halftime it was 1-0 to Spain and where the Matildas could have felt defeated, fight and power only grew in them to keep going and at least equalise.
At the 66th minute Astrid was finally running into the pitch, subbing for Larissa Crummer in the left forward position, Amy Sayer coming on for Tameka just behind her in the left midfield spot. By then Spain were already up 4-0 and Astrid was ready to put them on that score board.
For the past few minutes Australia had gained possession of the ball, Astrid trying for a goal twice but Paños and their defenders were good, stopping her shots before they could sink in. Astrid was getting frustrated, turning that anger into fuel and she was faster than ever when her boots touched that ball again. She weaved in and out of the Spanish defence, keeping the ball tight within her feet.
There were too many of them in the box ready to deny her, so she moved back with it. Her teammates were calling out for a pass further up and over the field where they had more space but she couldn't hear them. Her adrenaline was pumping, blocking out everything but her, the ball and the goal, So she kept running. She neared the penalty line, looking at the goal, trying to find space. She knew she was further than where she normally struck but she had to go for it, Batlle and Paredes closing in on her.
She stepped with her left foot, swinging her trusty right foot with all the power she had. The ball flew, literally, straight through the players, everyone watching as it went for the net. Paños saw it coming, preparing to jump and stop it. She went the right way but left just too early, the ball skimming by her right arm and into the net.
"LETS FUCKING GO!" Astrid shook her fist as she screamed and ran around the field, heading for her teammates who were also screaming. She jumped onto Charli, everyone else piling on top of them, patting her on the back and head.
GOOAALL for Australia by number 3 Astrid Taylor, bringing the score 4-1 to Spain. Shot from distance this time, normally she sneaks them in from the box but with limited space she went for it and a point on the board for the Matildas.
As they parted Astrid could hear Tony cheering her on from the sidelines, bringing a smile to her face as she walked back to her spot.
The game ended and Spain had beaten them 7-1, the only Aus goal coming from Astrid, all of the later shots blocked by their defenders and goalkeeper again.
The final whistle blew and the Spanish crowd went wild, the players celebrating together before going to shake hands with the Matildas. Astrid was politely shaking hands with the Spanish players, muttering 'good game' as they went past.
After shaking hands with most players, Astrid joined the huddle, slotting in the empty space between Mackenzie and Charli.
"The one thing I want to remind everyone about in here is we came here for a reason." Tony looked around at his team. "We came here to learn something and taking experience from it, alright? So, yes, we might have lost the game but we win in experience. And even if we win one player to be a better depth and roster going into the World Cup '23." He pointed around at the team. "It was worth it. Even though it feels really painful right now for every single one of you, I promise you it was worth it." The team tried to look positive to his words but their heads hung low.
"Good job everyone. That's it." The huddle parted and everyone looked defeated at how the game panned out, walking around the pitch to one another. Astrid just went to stand by herself on the pitch, looking around at the stadium and the crowd filtering out.
"Good game. That was a great goal, very impressive." Astrid had her head down when the voice spoke, lifting her head to meet the person's eyes.
"Thank...you." She immediately was starstruck when she saw the person in front of her. Ona Batlle was reaching her hand out to shake Astrids. Astrid tried not to let her jaw go slack and embarrass herself in front of the well-known player, bringing her hand up to shake Ona's.
"I've seen you over the internet, you may be young but you're very good." Ona placed her hands on her hips after they let go, Astrid doing the same to hide the shaking in her own.
"Oh wow, thank you so much." Astrid let out quickly.
"I think you'll be a very famous player, so I would love it if I could be the first to have your shirt." Ona nodded at the young girl who was speechless. "Only if you want?" She added when Astrid didn't respond.
"Yeah, yeah of course." Astrid snapped out of it and nodded, reaching to the hem of her shirt. The players removed their own jerseys and quickly exchanged, putting the opposite team colours on. As they pulled their heads through they noticed a camera man gesturing at them to stand together for a photo.
Ona wrapped her arm over Astrid's shoulder and pulled her close, smiles plastering both of their faces as he took the pictures, both holding a thumbs up pose. The players noticed their teams slowly disappearing down opposite tunnels, nodding at each other before Astrid walked over to where Charli was waiting for her.
"What the hell? You are wearing THE Ona Batlle's jersey right now. How are you not freaking out?!" Charli spoke from beside Astrid as they walked down the tunnel, the last Aussies to make their way in.
"I didn't dream that did I? Pinch me." Astrid held out her arm; Charli slapped her. "I said pinch not slap. My god." She rubbed her arm where she had hit her, giving the older girl a stare.
"What did she say to you?" Charli asked as she sat at her bench in the changing room to take her cleats off.
"She was impressed by my goal. And she said that I'll be famous one day so she wanted to be the first to have my jersey." Astrid smiled at the memory, everyone in the room listening in.
"Wow." Charli looked up at her. "I'm sure that boosted your ego even more." Charli teased and Astrid looked down at her.
"Shut up, you're just jealous aren't you?" Astrid pushed her shoulder and walked over to her own spot, shaking her head at Charli who scoffed in response.
After they all showered, the team finally left the stadium, piling onto a quiet bus to get back to the hotel. After having their team dinner, they all headed off to bed early, Mackenzie and Astrid heading into their shared room after bidding goodnight to the rest of the team.
The goalkeeper had noticed how quiet the young player was since they got back to the hotel, very unusual to her normal behaviour on camps, especially when with her friends. This was the first time they had roomed together so she wasn't sure if this was how she was normally before bed or something else was going on.
Mackenzie had just finished in the bathroom, walking out to see Astrid sitting on the edge of her own bed, staring into space and biting her nails.
"You alright?" Macca asked.
"Hmm?" Astrid hummed, still looking lost in thought.
"Are you alright? You're very quiet." She sat down on her bed, facing into Astrid's bed.
"Yeah. Sorry." Astrid removed her finger from her mouth, turning to face Mackenzie.
"Something on your mind?" She could tell she was thinking about something deeply, Astrid only shrugged in response. "Are you thinking about today?" Astrid tensed up at the mention of today's match. After a second of contemplation Astrid spoke.
"I should've gotten those other shots in, I always do." Astrid shook her head at herself, disappointed she couldn't help the team more.
"They had a good defence and Paños is a very good goalkeeper. It just didn't go our way today." Mackenzie tried to console the striker
"It's all my fault we lost." Astrid shook her head, Mackenzie got up and sat next to her.
"Look at me." Astrid's head lifted. "It's not your fault at all. It's not all up to you, just like it's not all up to Sam when she's in the front. When we play, we play as a team."
"I should've been better." She bit her lip, maintaining eye contact with her.
"You're already the best you've ever been. I mean come on, you've been on three times and scored a goal each time. Every game you play at your clubs you score at least once. That's literally fucking magic. And lets not forget that distance shot you fired and actually got in, I've never seen you take it from that far." Mackenzie shook Astrid's shoulders before pulling her in close, both letting out soft laughs.
"Thank you." Astrid pulled the taller girl in for a hug.
"Always." Mackenzie mumbled, holding the young girl in her arms. She couldn't believe she was beating herself up over it so much, she was already achieving so much at such a young age and the whole team was so proud and marvelled at her skills. They both eventually went to sleep, preparing to head to Portugal tomorrow for the next friendly after recovery.
Two days later and the game against Portugal was in full swing. Although Portugal might have had more possession, taking a few shots at goal, Lydia and the defenders were not letting them through. Half-time and they were 0-0 which was a lot more positive than where they were at the last game.
"You're killing it out there Char." Astrid patted the defender on the back, handing her a water and a sweat towel before she made her way down the tunnel, thanking Astrid as she went by.
The second half had begun and Princess Ibini had gone on for Remy in the left forward position, Astrid going on a few minutes later as the right forward in replace of Emily Gielnik.
Portugal still had strong possession of the ball and it was at 65 minutes when Charli got a yellow card within seconds of a tackle (that she didn't cause). Astrid watched her begin to argue as they gathered to line up for Portugal's free kick.
"How was it on me?" Charli argued with the ref and before anything else progressed Astrid quickly pulled her away after hearing Lydia call for her to move.
"Charli. Forget about it." Astrid led her to the line, not wanting her to get into more trouble, Charli still visibly confused and upset, as were the rest of her teammates. They ran and slotted in, creating a defensive line. The free kick went straight out and the game continued.
The ball had travelled to Gorry who sent it long for Larrissa, Astrid running fast up the right side, keeping an eye on it. She quickly sent the ball Astrid's way, receiving it but she was way too far out for the shot. She spotted Princess close to the goal, sending it long across to the pitch and she caught it sliding into the goal, the ball going in with her.
Astrid ran straight to the 22 year old who had just scored her first international goal, the rest of the team high fiving her as they ran back to position. Charli and Astrid gave her a hug before returning to their positions, proud of the striker.
10 minutes later and Portugal had equalised, making the score 1-1 at the end of the game and the Matildas coming away happier than their last game. That night they not only celebrated a better result, but also Lydia's 100 caps as a Matildas goalkeeper. Safe to say the camp ended on a high for all players.Â
