Dear Sappho: A Legacy of Lesbian Love Letters (Kay Turner, Thames & Hudson, 1996)
“Margaret to Louise: In the early 1960s, two antique hunters - a mother and daughter team - purchased an old picture frame that was bulging in the back with what they hoped might be hidden and forgotten money. In fact the frame was filled with love letters written by Margaret to Louise when the two were separated for a period in 1913. The mother was shocked and told her daughter to destroy the letters. But for some reason the daughter disobeyed. When her stepdaughter, Nancy Morgan, came out as a Lesbian twenty years later, the letters were transferred to her. Morgan traced the story of the letter-writers in her Senior Thesis (University of Santa Cruz, 1984).”
